Family strife fuels rom-com hijinks in Sweet Savage Family

MBC’s upcoming drama Sweet Savage Family wasn’t initially on my radar, but after seeing the teasers and promos, it looks like a funny, feel-good show — if not exactly highbrow — with an amusingly silly plot. It helps that the four leads are all veteran film and drama actors who’ve all put in solid dramatic work before, who’ll now be throwing that gravitas to the wind and going all-out for the laughs. I love committed zaniness!

Jung Jun-ho (My Neighbor’s Wife) plays a gang boss who’s treated as the least important in his own family, while Moon Jung-hee takes a break from serious projects like Cart and Hide and Seek to play his capable wife. In the first teaser below, he starts out scolding his underlings for not giving him enough respect, then turns away to whisper to the wife that he’ll be home as soon as he’s done.

Jung Woong-in (Yong-pal) is the second-fiddle friend who turns rival, which I love because I only just remembered that both Jungs played brothers in the drama Last Scandal of My Life, which is a gem of a rom-com that I have a lot of fondness for. In the teaser, he brags that he’s different from his friend because he uses his brain, and then gets head-butted by the gangster he’s trying to intimidate.

Playing the first love to both men (and Jung Woong-in’s ex) is Yoo Sun (Horse Healer, Himalaya), whose reappearance kickstarts things when her 18-year-old daughter (Girls Day’s Minah) starts a romance with the other couple’s son (BTOB’s Minhyuk). Their fathers are enemies, their mothers are enemies, and their teaser caption pleads, “Please just let us love!” In a K-drama? Not without blood, tears, or hair-pulling first. Who wants to take bets on just how many times our two families (1) get into a brawl, (2) swear eternal strife, or (3) end up at the police station?

Sweet Savage Family premieres next Wednesday, November 18, in the timeslot recently vacated by She Was Pretty.

I hope this isn't as potentially stupid as it seems, it's refreshing to have a drama led by veteran actors - Heard It Through the Grapevine did that earlier this year, and Yoo Joon-sang and Yoo Ho-jung were absoluetly fantastic in it.

Speaking of the young 'uns, the girl reminds me a bit of Jung Eunji, something about that eye smile. And the boy in that first pic holding her hand looks like some lovechild of Lee Hyun-woo and Kim Woo-bin.

Pahahaha, this actually looks hilarious! I was a bit sad when she was pretty ended, but its replacement sure looks funny and more importantly, light! I havent heard of the young 'uns but the veteran actors I am used to seeing delivering solid performances in whatever show they are in. I am especially here for jung wooon in, he may be frightening when he does evil but he is also very good at doing funny.

So two BTOB members will be competing for ratings since the village and sweet family will air in the same timeslot. Sungjae and Minhyuk fighting! Hope both dramas do well!

OMG! I never would have thought to watch this, but since She was Pretty would end with this as teasers even though I was upset I didn't get a preview from She was Pretty, I couldn't help but laugh at this.. Maybe I might try this although it isn't really my kind of thing, but it looks to funny to just walk away.. :D

Looks wacky and fun, like the unusual premise. Will definitely watch to see Jung Woong-in in a (somewhat) non-villain role! The posters are cool, totally dig the one with marionettes.

Oh my gooooosh. It is so silly that I love it. They threw the Jung Brothers of Last Scandal for yet another rom-com rivalry. This is a show to die for.

In my opinion, Jung Jun-ho's most likable dramas are romcoms. He is GENIUS in that genre. Jung Jun-ho was born for romcom. Romcom was born for Jung Jun-ho. I despise playboy characters, but when Jung Jun-ho becomes a playboy in Princess Lulu, give the girl to the playboy!! And then a hot ahjusshi actor in Last Scandal who falls in-love with a spinster first-love ahjumma, just keep my heart still pls!

In all fairness, Last Scandal is so good, that I wouldn't bother if Choi Jin-shil ends up with Jung Woong-in or Jung Jun-ho. I mean ANYBODY -- either is fine with me. ♥

Speaking of which, Last Scandal remains to be one of the most rewatchable dramas ever. Can anybody suggest a drama similar to that?? I think I ran out of good supply of dramas -- I Have A Lover airs just Sat and Sun, my heaaart. Tnx in advance!

From the trailers I'm thinking this is a bit like the Sopranos with a light touch, or maybe more like the Married to the Mob series perhaps. Always good to see competition between families -- usually see that in weekend shows, something like that on a 16 episode show will allow faster plot movement than a weekend 50 episode rehash.

Cant wait this reunion between Jung Jun Ho and Jung Woong In. I love how they work together on My Boss My Heroes nine years ago. They really funny in that movies. I thought the writer and PD's love them much in that movie and both of them (JJH-JWI) want that reunion,

Haha - they got the 2 ol' buddies, Jung Jun-ho and Jung Woong-in, to do another comedic gangsta project.

Even before "The Last Scandal of My Life" - the 2 worked on "My Boss, My Hero" in 2001 which made JJH a star and its sequel, "My Boss, My Teacher."

I guess this time, the 2 are rivals (tho, even when their characters were members of the same gang, there was an underlying rivalry) - which is great b/c they have such great chemistry with each other.
