EPISODE 6: “The first snow is coming”

After discovering the matching dictionaries on Sun-woo’s desk, Jung-hwan jumps to the obvious conclusion that Sun-woo’s been borrowing needless things from Deok-sun every day because he likes her. Jung-hwan mutters that this is 100 percent certain proof, though he doesn’t say out loud the conclusion he’s assuming.

Sun-woo starts to say that he’ll explain, but Jung-hwan cuts him off brusquely: “Why would I listen to someone else’s love life?” and walks away. Oh, puppy.

Sun-woo’s mom tells Taek’s dad that she’s making soup tonight and will send some over, and Taek’s dad puts up a very quiet show of polite protest until she’s out of earshot and then happily accepts her food.

He sets the table for dinner and calls Taek, but sighs to find him passed out in his room in front of his baduk board. Okay, he’s just sleeping, right? That scared me. Dad tucks him in with another little sigh.

It’s still November 1988 and it’s starting to get really cold. Deok-sun complains when they’ve already run out of hot water by the time she’s getting ready for school. Mom tells her to just wash her hair with cold water, lying that Dad did the same. (Dad did nothing of the kind, since he’s currently standing at the bus stop with bedhead.)

Her solution is an easy one—just go upstairs—and Jung-hwan does a double take when Deok-sun comes out of his bathroom in her pajamas while towel-drying her hair. He stands there like a doof and says she’s going to be late for school, and walks out before his brain melts.

Deok-sun’s friends ask if Sun-woo’s confessed his feelings yet, and when she says no, they hilariously decide that he’s being extra careful to protect her. Deok-sun says she can feel it coming that he’s going to confess soon, and her friends make her promise to tell her all about her first kiss.

Her friends ask for Taek’s autograph too, and sigh enviously that she gets to talk to him and stuff. Deok-sun says he’s not really much of a talker, but her friends are smitten anyway, saying that people call him a god. Deok-sun: “A god [shin]? He’s a moron [deung-shin].”

Cut to: Taek fumbling with a Walkman, trying to figure out why it won’t play his cassette. He tries all the buttons, and then Dong-ryong pulls it out of his hands to replace the batteries. Dong-ryong asks, “You’re only like this in front of us, right? You’re not going to do this stuff around other people, right? People really respect you, you know. They call you a god.”

Dong-ryong tells him not to touch anything or do anything when he’s out at competitions, and Taek says defensively, “I’m not an idiot.” He still can’t get the Walkman to play, and Dong-ryong shows him that his volume was turned down: “See, you’re an idiot. Idiot, right?”

Taek is headed back to China to compete in an international tournament, where he’s the last Korean player remaining. The commentators say that him winning the whole thing is a long shot at this point, and as Dong-ryong helps him pack, he tells Taek to just lose and come home sooner so they can go eat at the new pizza place that opened.

Taek asks what happens if he wins, and Dong-ryong says they’ll do whatever he wants. Taek: “Movie.” Dong-ryong: “A movie star?” Taek: “I wanna see a movie.” That is just so tiny and adorable. Dong-ryong sighs and agrees that they’ll go see a movie if he wins. But first, he stops to re-button Taek’s shirt, which he’s managed to screw up as well. Dong-ryong: “I don’t understand how other people lose to you.” Ha.

Taek’s tournament game begins, and though the Chinese player is surrounded by a team, Taek’s entrance is a lonely one. Back at home, Dad sits by the phone and radio just waiting for news, and Deok-sun runs in to ask if any of the boys are here. Dad says that Sun-woo is, so she primps and opens the door to Taek’s room, and her face falls to see Jung-hwan and Dong-ryong too.

She gets mad at them for eating ramyun without her, and Jung-hwan tells her she should’ve come sooner if she wanted any. They devolve into another bickering match, and Sun-woo offers to make her fresh ramyun to stop their fight, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Jung-hwan.

Deok-sun asks why Taek would have to win five games in a row to win the tournament, and Sun-woo explains that he’s the last Korean player remaining, so he’d have to beat everyone else from China and Japan to win.

Dong-ryong doesn’t think it’s likely with so many challengers left and with Taek not at his best, but Sun-woo gets all riled up and asks, “Have you guys ever actually seen him play? He’s in a different class, you childish kindergarteners!”

Taek’s game begins, and an entire room full of reporters photographs every single move he makes. Guh, I can’t even imagine the pressure. Back at home, Dad gets a phone call.

The kids hang out in Taek’s room while listening to Lee Moon-se’s radio show (he did a voice cameo to recreate this broadcast), and Deok-sun spends the whole time making moony eyes at Sun-woo, though he seems oblivious to her.

When the DJ suggests snuggling up to the one you love on this cold night, Deok-sun scootches closer to Sun-woo. But he ignores that too and talks to Jung-hwan, so she inches away again, disappointed.

Sun-woo asks about Jung-hwan’s hyung Jung-bong and if he’s going to pass his college entrance exam this time around, and Jung-hwan says he’s likely going to fail because he’s just been writing postcards. Just then, the DJ reads a postcard from Jung-bong, and they all get up with a start.

Jung-bong says that Taek lives on his street and they’re very close, and he’s worried about Taek having to beat an opponent with a 160 IQ, and wanted to send Taek some encouragement. The DJ says that they actually received over 50 letters from people claiming to live on Taek’s street, and tells Jung-bong to send a picture next time. And that he’s won a Cabbage Patch doll for his troubles.

But the good news: Taek won his first game! The kids light up and happily snuggle under the blanket for warmth, fighting over the covers and being generally adorable.

But Taek… Taek is passed out alone in his hotel room, still wearing his suit. Packets of medicine are splayed out all over the table, and I’m starting to freak out now. What the hell is going on with him??

The kids head home later that night, and Deok-sun and Sun-woo walk out together, leaving Jung-hwan trailing behind them like a sad little puppy. He sees the way Deok-sun smiles at Sun-woo and hangs his head.

Taek has four more matches to win, and Deok-sun’s dad comes by to tell Taek’s dad that if he wins this time, a chicken won’t do. He asks for some nice liquor, and Taek’s dad agrees, though he’s far more pessimistic about the odds, and about Taek’s condition.

Deok-sun’s mom says she’d like to have Taek for a son-in-law, so Deok-sun offers to seduce him for Mom’s sake. They’re surprised when a car pulls up and Bora gets out to pose next to it, saying that it belongs to a sunbae who went somewhere for a few months. Deok-sun whisper-sings, “Prison! Prison!” Mom worries about Bora driving, but she says she’ll be careful, and then has to forcibly get Deok-sun and Mom to get in the car so she can drive them half a block home.

Taek wins another game and has three more to go. Jung-hwan is so engrossed in the radio commentary about Taek that he skips Mom’s snack, and Mom is happy when Hyung does the same because he’s so into studying. Mom and Dad are sure that he’ll get into college this time.

Dad thinks it’s hilarious to pretend to feed Mom cake and then stick his finger in her mouth instead, and she simply retaliates by chomping down hard. What they don’t know is that Jung-bong is hunched over his desk writing more postcards to Lee Moon-se.

Another of his postcards gets read on the radio that night, and this one is about Bora. He says that Bora is the smartest girl in their neighborhood and got into Seoul University, calling her brilliant among brilliant minds. Meanwhile, we see Bora go into her room, crack a window, and light up a cigarette.

Jung-bong says that lots of people are afraid of Bora, but he knows that she’s a girl with a warm heart. Bora blows smoke rings and spits in a can for effect. Little Bro No-eul freaks out that Dad’s gonna catch her, but she doesn’t seem to care.

He tells her that Mom’s aunt passed away so they have to go, and Bora says she’s on it. She piles the whole family into her car, and Dad looks pale as he suggests taking the bus instead. Bora insists that it’ll be fine, and Dad starts praying.

They go maybe five feet before she hits something that they think is a dog, and Bora panics so hard that she refuses to let anyone get out of the car or continue to drive, so they’re forced to just sit there in the car and wait for her panic to subside.

Dad is screaming, Bora is screaming, No-eul is crying, and Deok-sun gets so fed up that she blasts the radio to have something else to do. And of course, while they’re all trapped inside, we see that the thing she ran over was a stuffed toy dog. Pffft.

Dong-ryong dances because he’s so happy about Taek winning his last game, which takes us to Taek’s third match in three days.

Deok-sun hears that Bora borrowed her new jacket today, and as promised, Deok-sun goes to borrow Unni’s white dress since that was the agreement they made. Only when she gets to the closet, she discovers that Bora simply wore both the dress and the jacket, and Deok-sun screeeeeams that she’s going to kill her.

Jung-bong runs into a couple of boys from the high school smoking in an alley, and stops to call them out on smoking and littering. It all goes sideways when the high school boys just challenge him to do something about it and raise a fist, and Jung-bong flinches and backpedals quickly.

But a hand comes flying in to smack the high school boys upside the head: It’s badass Bora to the rescue, and she singlehandedly puts the boys in their place and confiscates their cigarettes. She sneers at their love of American brands (and Jung-bong quickly hides his Nike shirt, ha) and forces them to chant along with her like she’s leading them in a student demonstration.

Taek wins his next two games, which means he’s down to the final championship match against a star rookie. Jung-hwan runs into Deok-sun at his house again that morning, and he snarks that she should just live there. Would you like that.

Deok-sun says she’s here to see Jung-bong this time, because she wants to know how he keeps getting his postcards read by Lee Moon-se and wants to borrow one to send in. Mom sighs to learn that Jung-bong hasn’t been studying all this time.

Deok-sun’s dad stops by to chat with Taek’s dad about today’s match, and his father says that Taek has a jinx—his one weakness is rookies, because he doesn’t know what to expect with newbie players.

The opponent is already seated at the table, and he looks kind of like a Taek clone. It’s worrisome that Taek isn’t in his seat yet, but his teacher tells a reporter from the sidelines that Taek is never early—he’s always just exactly on time.

Oh phew, Taek walks in, but he looks so worn out and sleep-deprived. Five days straight of competitions has clearly taken its toll, and he looks like he’s barely able to sit up. His teacher asks the reporter to write a good story even if Taek loses, and the reporter refuses to believe that Taek would lose. The teacher sighs that this kind of expectation is why Taek can’t sleep.

Taek draws black stones, which is another bad portent—he always does better when he’s white stones. The game begins amidst camera flashes, and I’m so nervous I can’t watch. Dad sits in his shop just checking the phone over and over to make sure he gets a dial tone.

One by one, all of the neighbors drop in to ask if Taek won or lost, and Dad tells them over and over that he doesn’t know yet. Dong-ryong (dragged in by scary Teacher Dad), Deok-sun’s dad, Sun-woo, Deok-sun, Jung-hwan, Deok-sun’s dad again… And in China, the game goes on for hours.

Jung-hwan rounds the corner to his street, and stops when he sees Sun-woo and Deok-sun on his front steps, smiling at each other as Sun-woo pats her on the arm and says goodnight. Sun-woo heads home and waves at Jung-hwan when he sees him, and Jung-hwan gives a tiny wave back, looking dejected.

He trudges home and picks up the mail on his way in, and laughs to see that Deok-sun’s postcard to Lee Moon-se’s radio show got returned because of postage. He flips it around to read it…

Deok-sun says she’s experiencing her first love right now, and that she’s come to like a childhood friend so much that she’s happy just to see him, and she thinks of him when she’s eating or studying: “Oppa, this is love, right? The boy that I like is named S.W.” Oh noes.

She says that he’s even more handsome than his name, and wants to tell him, “Thank you for liking me, and I like you too!” Aaauuugh. There go the pieces of Jung-hwan’s heart. I can’t. I can’t. Is it over yet?

Taek’s dad comes out and tells Jung-hwan that he got the call. Ack, why do you not look happy? Great, I can’t watch this either. Am I going to have to watch the rest of this episode through my fingers?

The match is over, and the rookie Chinese player is surrounded by cameras, while Taek is alone in the bathroom, splashing water on his face. He stares long and hard at his reflection, and then his teacher comes in to tell him solemnly that he worked hard. Aw, he lost, didn’t he?

Dad closes up shop for the night, when Deok-sun’s dad and Jung-hwan’s dad pop by for the final verdict: win or lose? Deok-sun’s dad yells at him to spit it out already before he dies of suspense, and Taek’s dad pauses… and then beams, “He won!” You faker! They bust bottles of liquor out of their jackets for a celebration.

Taek and his teacher come out of the bathroom, and all the cameras turn on him for his big moment. He’s as solemn as ever, and it’s only when the elevator doors close that he lets go a little and leans on the wall, looking so very tired.

Teacher asks what his plans are since he doesn’t have any upcoming competitions, and at that, Taek finally breaks into a smile: “I have something to do.”

All the families are gathered around their TVs watching stories about Taek’s monumental win, but all the kids are just sitting by their phones and refusing to eat. Finally Sun-woo’s phone rings, then Jung-hwan’s, then Deok-sun’s, and they all go flying out of their houses.

They’re lined up like little ducks at Taek’s door, and he greets them with a huge grin. It’s too cute. Dong-ryong and Sun-woo hug him on their way in, so Jung-hwan makes a move to hug him too, which he can’t manage to do without two awkward false starts. Deok-sun just starts to walk past him, but Taek grabs her for a hug too. Omo.

He turns around to find them already digging into the celebratory pizza, which I suspect is responsible for about 90 percent of their excitement level today. As always, there’s zero fanfare here, and they tell Taek to hurry up and eat.

In no time they’re down to the last slice of pizza, and when Dong-ryong makes a move to take it, Deok-sun stops him. They all challenge him for it, so then it starts them on a game of Poor Me, and everyone starts trotting out sob stories to win the last slice.

Dong-ryong says he confessed to a noona yesterday and got rejected, Deok-sun says she lives in a half-basement and her unni is Bora. Dong-ryong runs out of his own things so then he starts saying that Jung-hwan’s entire family used to live in a single room, and his hyung is Jung-bong. Jung-hwan: “I like my brother.”

Dong-ryong prompts Sun-woo to challenge Deok-sun, but then he amends the rules: “But you can’t say your dad!” And to Taek: “Or your mom! That’s cheating!” Sun-woo thinks long and hard and then says, “I like someone, but I haven’t been able to confess for two years.”

Deok-sun smiles, Jung-hwan loses his appetite, and Dong-ryong gives up the last slice to Sun-woo. Sun-woo says he doesn’t know what to do, and Deok-sun tells him, “Confess! On the first day of snow!”

The parents celebrate too, and Deok-sun’s dad asks Taek’s dad to trade kids, sighing that raising daughters is just too hard. When they run out of liquor, Deok-sun’s mom prods Dad to go call Bora and have her bring over a jar, and the parents all cringe to hear Bora yelling over the phone in complaint. Mom says that Bora’s got a warm heart and she’ll still show up, and she does, just like Mom predicted.

Sun-woo’s mom gets a call that her daughter Jin-ju is running a fever while staying over at Grandma’s, and frets over not being able to get there till the first train the next morning. She packs her bag and sits by the phone that night.

Taek’s dad comes home and says goodnight to his son, and laughs when four boys respond to say goodnight. Jung-hwan is still awake and asks Sun-woo to swap places with him, but Sun-woo throws an arm around Taek and refuses to give up his spot: “No, I’m gonna sleep next to Taek! He’s warm and perfect for hugging while you sleep.” Oh, I bet he is.

Jung-hwan tells the others, “This bastard farted again,” and kindly airs the smell of Dong-ryong’s fart out to the rest of the room, and they groan and attack him with pillows.

Sun-woo’s mom looks like she’s going to spend the entire night waiting by the phone for the morning train, but then she gets a call that shocks her. She steps outside cautiously a moment later, and there’s Bora waiting by her car. She knows that Sun-woo’s mom would spend the night awake and worrying, and insists on driving her tonight. Aw.

Ha, Jung-bong sits at home with his new Cabbage Patch doll in his arms. Mom tells him to call Dad home for dinner, and when Dad asks what they’re eating and what kind of meat she bought, Mom snatches the phone and shouts, “COW! Cow cow cow cow cow! Get home!” She’s disappointed when Jung-hwan isn’t interested in eating at all though, and he spends the evening just lying in bed and lost in thought.

Hyung comes running into his room to announce snow, and Jung-hwan peers out the window looking panicked. Hyung says he means that snow is due sometime tonight, and asks to be woken up. Jung-hwan just gazes out the window with a sigh.

Deok-sun is home alone when Sun-woo comes knocking, and she lets him in, practically bursting in anticipation. But when he comes inside, he asks for Bora noona. Ack. Deok-sun: “Sung Bora? Why?” Sun-woo points behind him to the sky: “Because it’s snowing…”

Deok-sun looks like she’s on the verge of tears as she looks out and sees snow. Aaaand, there go the pieces of Deok-sun’s heart.

Flashback to all the times Sun-woo came by to borrow something from Deok-sun: He’d timed it so that he’d always run into Bora, just so that he could see her once that day for a few seconds, talk to her about something, or check on her after she’d been injured in that student protest.

We see it now, clear as day—the way he looks at her, the little smiles, the nervous anticipation before seeing her, and joy when she says something back to him. He’s totally smitten.

But it’s heartbreaking for Deok-sun, who stands there sobbing. Sun-woo’s already gone, but she runs after him. Jung-hwan looks out his window at the falling snow, but then he sees Deok-sun running out with tears streaming down her face.

She catches up to Sun-woo in the street, and doesn’t bother hiding her tears. She shouts, “Why?! Why Sung Bora?!” He says he likes her, and calls her pretty and smart and nice. Deok-sun has a curse for every one of his responses.

He says that even the freckle next to her eyes is pretty, and Deok-sun screams that SHE gave Unni that freckle in a fight when they were kids. She wails, “Why is it Sung Bora?!” Why?!” She stomps away and then turns back to hit Sun-woo over the head, LOL, and declares that she’s never going to see him again. Yeah good luck with that.

She leaves him stunned and sobs again as she storms back into her yard. When she’s gone, the gate swings back closed… and behind it is Jung-hwan, who’s sporting a bloody nose because he got slammed in the face by the gate.

He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about that though, because he couldn’t possibly be any happier right now. He bursts into a giddy chuckle, and suddenly has an appetite again, which confuses Mom.

Deok-sun cries at her desk as Lee Moon-se finally reads one of the postcards that she sent into his radio show, hoping that the boy she likes will confess on the first day of snow. She asks Lee Moon-se oppa to please read her letter at the first snowfall, because she believes that he’ll help make her first love come true.

Taek steps outside and pauses to look at the snow, and back in the neighborhood, Sun-woo paces in the street waiting and waiting for Bora to come home. Lee Moon-se wonders what it’s like to get a confession in the snow, and guesses that they might be the two happiest people in the world tonight. Cut to: Deok-sun wailing in her room.

Lee Moon-se says that the success rate for a love confession in the snow is 90 percent, so now is the time to gather up your courage and do it. Bora rounds the corner and Sun-woo says he’s been waiting for her because he has something to say. He takes off his coat for her, and when she prompts him to talk, he just says it: “Noona, I like you.”

When he gets no response, he says again, “I said, I like you.” It finally registers, and her mouth opens in shock.

Lee Moon-se concludes his radio broadcast by saying that if you happen to be one of those people out there who have yet to receive a confession from the one you love, “Don’t be too sad. Someone else might be loving you right this minute… and might suddenly confess that they’ve liked you for a very long time.”

Right on cue, someone calls Deok-sun’s house and asks for her. She picks it up, and OMG—it’s Taekie! He’s on the payphone outside the baduk training center just looking out at the snow. She makes sure nothing’s wrong and tells him to hurry home because it’s after midnight.

Before she can hang up, he calls out, “Deok-sun-ah! Should we… go see a movie?” He then amends it to: “Let’s go see a movie.” You stealthy heartbreaker, you.

Fast-forward to November 2015. Deok-sun complains about someone blowing smoke in her face, and Unni Bora (Jeon Mi-sun) begs her to let it go because she can’t smoke at home. Bora’s phone rings with a video call from her husband, and Deok-sun has to remind her to put her cigarette out first.

Bora tells her husband to come over to Deok-sun’s house and says super sweetly that she misses him. Later, the interview continues with Deok-sun and her husband, and the interviewer asks what first snow reminds them of.

Husband: “Throwing yourself at Sun-woo and getting rejected?” Pwahahaha. That’s mean! Also, now we know you’re not Sun-woo, so thanks for that. He teases her mercilessly for sending postcards into Lee Moon-se’s radio show and the whole deal, and Deok-sun asks how he knows any of that. Hm, how do you know all that?

He says there’s nothing about her that he doesn’t know, and says she should be good to him for being so understanding. Deok-sun scoffs, “Do you want me to name all the people you dated before we got married? Shall we stay up all night?”

He quickly changes the subject and asks if they went to the College Music Festival in ’88, and Deok-sun asks what other girl he went with. She reminds him that they all watched it together on TV that year, correctly remembering the winner (Shin Hae-chul’s Infinite Track) and proceeds to dance to the song, thoroughly embarrassing him.

COMMENTS

Ack, I knew Taek smelled of Chilbongie! I’m not sure I can handle it, guys. I just want him to not be sad and lonely anymore, and if he gets his heart broken too, I just can’t. Honestly though, at this point I’m still with Jung-hwan because his is the crush that gets me in the heart, and I feel like we’ve been with him every step of the way as he discovered his feelings. His unrequited love for Deok-sun is still the emotional center of the romance for me, and it hurt to see him watching Sun-woo and Deok-sun thinking that they liked each other and not being able to do a damned thing about it. Though who knows what’ll change now that Deok-sun can start getting over Sun-woo and move on. I think she’ll be okay in no time—her feelings for Sun-woo seemed very superficial (as in not deep, not that she liked him for superficial reasons), and I thought her rejection scene was adorable and funny rather than sad.

I mostly felt bad that she’d have to lose yet again to her sister, which is a tough pill for her swallow as the kid sister who always gets the raw end of the deal. I’m not all that shocked that Sun-woo likes Bora—I wasn’t keeping track of all the little hints like many of guys had been pointing out, but I just never felt anything from him towards Deok-sun, which had already made him less of a romantic contender in my book. And now we know for sure that he’s out of the running to be her future husband, though really, that only moves him over to the Unni’s husband-contender line, because apparently now we’re playing TWO rounds of Who’s the Husband. Grar.

Sun-woo’s crush is cute (mostly because he’s so cute), but I was laughing so hard when Deok-sun called him crazy as he listed all of Bora’s good traits. I guess it just goes to show how loving someone can really make you see only the best, because I’m so confused as to how he thinks she’s nice. Badass, yes. Nice? Not so much. She did earn some major points when she drove Sun-woo’s mom and didn’t even take credit for it later, and we did see that she sometimes lets down her guard and smiles when she thinks no one is looking. I like that we’re seeing tiny glimpses of a more thoughtful side, but prickly doesn’t even begin to cover it with her. She makes Jung-hwan look like a freaking teddy bear in a tutu. I think a romance with Sun-woo would soften up the way we see her character though, so I’m looking forward to that (and also the comedy that’s sure to ensue).

Taek’s storyline really grabbed me in this episode, because I can’t get over how unhappy he looks at the top of the world. And I need to know why he’s passing out—is it because he’s just working himself to the bone, or is it something more serious? It’s more than a little worrying that he’s always taking medicine and looking like his head might explode from the pressure. Becoming a world champion is amazing, but he didn’t seem half as happy about the big win as he did when he was thinking about plans with his friends and the “thing” he wanted to do. That the thing turned out to be a movie date with Deok-sun was the bigger surprise of the episode than Sun-woo, really. I mean, there’s playing it close to the vest and then there’s Taek. Right now I’m just grateful for his friendships, because I’m sure we’re headed for some major love triangle angst from this point forward, and I have a feeling that I’m going to need all the happy memories I can muster. I’m just glad that he has true friends to come home to and be himself around, who think that he’s just perfect for spooning.

Same here!! Grrrr DF!! By the time I get to watch the show the DB recap discussion is almost over! (Insert crying emoji here). All the 5 kids are so adorable!! And team Jung-hwan here! I'll throw something if his puppy love doesn't materialize into something long term!!!

On a side note, Park Bo-geum is so good. Have liked him in everything I have seen him in. He was so good in hello monster/I remember you.

I've liked Park Bo-geum in everything I've seen him in too, so I can't deal with this triangle (even though I'm on the JH-DS ship).

Park Bo Geum is indeed fantastic. 2 months ago he scared and moved us as a psychopath whom we left sorry for. Now he is totally this genius baduk player who is awkward and useless in real life. He even looks years younger and Smaller in stature! He is not hunching his back. How does is make himself look so much smaller?

It's a amazing to be so good in acting at such a young age. That's why I love KD--for all the young and up and coming acting power houses! (That's why I don't buy it when ppl say Shin Se Kyung's acting is good after GWSS.)

I was just thinking the same thing about PBG - how he just played such a creepy, scary psychpath in IRY, and now he's playing this baduk genius who doesn't even know how to do the simplest things in a teen's life, like changing batteries and adjusting the volume on his walkman. He hasn't had many speaking lines, but just the way he carries himself & his body language just makes you want to hug him & makes you feel so sad & sorry for him...

All of the actors are just doing an incredible job! And I just laugh at so many little things in this drama, since I'm from the kids' same generation - like the picture of Phoebe Cates on the wall & references to Little House on the Prairie! Just LOVE that! I was thinking how a lot of viewers not of that generation will miss a lot of those little nuances that the writers have very cleverly added. Not that it makes or breaks it for anyone, but I really enjoy them. Great job!

+1 Park Bo Geum is really stealing the spotlight for me. I was anticipating his performance in this after IRY...and he hasnt disappointed at all! It is amazing how he made the transformation from smart calculating lawyer to young naive genius. The scene where they are packing for the tournament and then they all line up for a hug is just precious!

I think its so cute that what Taek wants to do the most after his huge David vs. Goliath of a win is to go see a movie... and then we find out that it's not just going to see a movie, what he meant was that he wanted to go on a date to the movies with Deok Sun... how adorably cute and simple and sweet! I know, right? I was so dissapointed when I learned that DF got the license insteas of VIKI. At least, when it was with Viki, we gotta see REPLY series over the weekends. The volunteers worked so hard to sub and they knew REPLY series were so in demand. I really appreciate VIKI in this case. Booo Drama fever.

Yeah, Dramafever blurred out all the commercials and tv shows referenced in the drama. It's such a shame because one of the best parts of the Answer Me series is the nostalgia and you lose a lot of that thru DF. I'm lucky to be able to understand korean so I can watch it on OnDemandKorea - they have everything unedited or censored. It's great.

I've liked his character from the beginning and didn't really care that he was that one friend who didn't have a love life because he was already endearing as possible. BUT NOW OH MY GOSH! It's just going to be so hard to watch because we somehow already know his fate based from the past replies. The fairer skin guy always gets the bad end of the stick although, although of course in the end he gets his own perfect redemption. The first reply is still my all time favorite in regards to the second lead story. I mean after watching that I somehow reached a point of realization and knew what I wanted to be in the future back when I was 16 because of that cool doctor. LOLOLOL. TAEKKIEE'S GOING TO BE CHILBONGIE THE SECOND. Sigh.

0

That's true. He couldn't really let it be known he was there. Though I do wonder if he had plans to talk to her soon, but Taek swooped in too soon. JH might have left her alone to let her get over it, but since Taek didn't know she was upset he called anyway.

0

That's why this triangle will take awhile. He had a chance and instead of taking it he left her alone for Taek to swoop in lol. I'm glad he was happy for a minute, but it's hilarious he thinks he's in the clear when there is a real threat out there now. Poor guy.

Required fields are marked *

It's only a threat for JH if DS is interested in Taek, which she gives zero evidence of being. When her two silly GFs were swooning over him, she offhandedly wrote him off as being a total idiot. That's the reason why I don't root for DS to get Taek (I don't see it as Taek getting DS).

I want him to have sb who admires him for his extraordinary talent, is proud of him, and loves him enough to be protective of him for his lack of ability to take care of himself. Hopefully, as he grows older, and maybe becomes less than 100% focused on baduk, he'll learn to navigate his way in the world.

I'm not worried about these 5 being heart-broken for not getting their "1st love". This isn't your "I'll die if I don't get my 1st love" kind of show. It maybe "puppy love", or "as we think back to the time we were 18, along with certain songs and tv shows, we also recall the 1st time we noticed the opposite sex" kind of thing. Romance is in the air alright, but that's all part and parcel of healthy adolescence.

Hah I can't imagine JH doing any comforting at this point. He's still a prickly cactus right now esp towards Deok Sun!

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, but the actor doesn't know which husband he is playing. The writer and director told him to just act the way he wants to act based on the script. The script usually doesn't talk about mannerisms or ad libing so it could just be the actor acting like how he thinks the husband will be acting. That's what I read. So I think it's too early to say that it's JH. Besides, the writers could be setting this up for everyone to believe it's JH and then later do a whole reveal through flashbacks and what not. Besides, I have a feeling Taek might be sweet but he has a bit of a jokey/prickly side to him. After all, you don't win all these baduk championships and competing/working in the adult world without picking up a few bad habits.

I think it's about time the nice guys got the girl. After all, at the end of the day in real life it's really the nice guys who marry the girl after all. It's not the selfish, mean, always picking-on-the-girl-but-secretly-never-says-anything-but-inside-is-nice kind of guys that marry the girl. It's the open, honest, nice guy that usually gets the girl. I think the dramas need to show that more rather than to make it seem like a prickly attitudey guy is so cool and have him get the girl.

Required fields are marked *

Taek knows NOTHING of the world. DS is the ONLY female he has any contact with. So it is natural that he thinks of her when he wants to go see a movie w a girl. Is there another girl whom he can invite? Of course plenty of girls would want to go with him, but being as shy and introverted as he is, it is not like he knows any other girl well enough to be able to extend the invitation. I don't see it as a love line at all. It is only his 1st attempt to venture out of his baduk world, the only world he knows. It's the 1st baby step. It'll lead to others, and he'll have a happy ending for sure.

What is so special or precious about DS anyway, beside the fact that she is the heroine of this show, and basically the only girl in it, in addition to that "Crazy bitch" of a sister, who scares even the neighbourhood ajummas who watched her grow up.

0

Required fields are marked *

Hah I agree. I think this will be his venture into first love. He has a lot of growing up to do in terms off relationships and the world outside of his competitions. It's funny that the adults think him mature and grown up when really he's so far from it.
I love that he has this tiny bubble of friends that he can return to though that help him feel young and normal and ordinary. It's such a contrast to the craziness of his public persona and the pressure it draws.
I mean I'm sure he'll experience heartbreak but liking someone like DS guarantees that at least it's a girl that already loves and cares for him. She's already his family in many ways so even if it doesn't work out, he won't lose her.
Honestly I'm not worried. I'm already anticipating that I'l cry over him a million times but like...you can't be that cruel to one of your main leads right...? :|

I agree this triangle will be more about him growing up, though DS is pretty awesome and caring. So that's what's so great about her. It's going to go back to their child hood together when she gave him a piggy back ride. She's always been there caring for him.

I love Taek so much, so much so that I want more for him than the first and only girl that he has ever set his eyes on. The world is bigger than that, and he should get a chance to see more of it before he decides.
DS is familiar and safe. But wait till Jin Joo grows up. She's going to be a stunner, and she'll adore him, etc. etc. etc. Just you wait. (Fingers and toes all crossed till they cramp!)

It cracks me up that last time with his 50 million won win, all that the friends asked of him was dobbukki. Now after winning against 5 other top players to win the world championship, all they get is a pizza and are so happy with it. Of course their friendship isn't predicated on material things, but can't he splurge and take everyone out for a movie and a meal, like that one JH's family went for his mom's BD, and have some fun himself with the money that he won with splitting headaches?

Taek-ah, you need to learn to enjoy life some, and your winnings too.

This is truly an incredible show. I know this because I watch it raw, and even though I don't speak Korean it still gets to me. The actors are amazing, able to transmit the feelings of their characters even when they speak a language I barely understand. Maybe if the website-that-shall-not-be-named subbed the episodes faster I would have not appreciated this show as much.

I just kinda picked up a few hints from Taek especially in the group and Taek-Deoksun scenes! Still Junghwan has my heart, but as the story progresses i feel i might not care who Deoksun ends up with as long as they're ALL happy. Eeek now I'm so excited for next week!!!

I'm really looking forward to it and also dreading it.

Re "This is truly an incredible show".

I love this show for the world it creates. There isn't much material wealth; there aren't any chaebols or Won Jang nims; or rich women who look down on others. There isn't any: "I don't want my daughter to play with your son cos you are a widow", nor "I'm richer and therefore better than you since we won the lottery", nor "my son is a world famous baduk player, and is too good for the lot of you". NONE of that nonsense. I was beginning to worry that SK is really a society as sick and calculating as the one depicted in so many KDs. This show restores my confidence. For that I'm thankful.

It's just a world in which perfectly normal ppl are living out their humble lives, trying their best to make ends meet, be the parents their children need, kids growing up willy-nilly, and most of all, neighbours keeping company, and looking out for each other.

There is so much going on in this world, that who is DS's husband somehow seems to me a frivolous Qn.

You are right, the neighbors themselves are a family, and that is what makes this show so special. They send each other food, use each other's stuff without any problems, and give each other unconditional love and support. Reminds me of my neighborhood growing up. But my daughter has never had that life. Throughout the years the neighbors kept their kids inside and kept their distance. I've tried connecting with them, but they are not interested. Too sad.

Taek could be the hubby for some reasons:

1. The lead in answer me series always had his arm broken. And Little Taek's arm broken in episode 2.

2. He and the future husband both left handed.

3. The same reaction when he and his future husband saw Deok Sun dancing. Feeling embarrassed and get out of the room.

4. Both previous series always narrate the story when the future hubby moved to the heroine's house / the neighborhood. Both in Episode 2. It was Taek in this installment.

But I feel the personality of the future husband is straight up JH. Doesn't feel like taek at all?

When Jung hwan saw her dancing, JH keep looking at it and keep laughing. The future hubby does not. Meanwhile, Taek close the door and get out of the room.

Maybe, the director told Kim Joo Hyuk to act between Taek and Jung Hwan?

About the hubby's personality, and the smoking habit. We don't know. Maybe Taek personality change after quit baduk?? His friends even taught him to curse and swear.

I don't know either, but there are 14 episodes left with potential twist.

Also, in both previous reply series, the male lead even cannot use chopsticks properly. Same as Taek.

0

I saw it too! The future husband is too embarrassed to watch her dancing. LOL.
But again, this is Reply Series, that plot holes are everywhere. (Remember that the hints scream the second lead but no, it's not?)
It's indeed confusing that the future husband really acts in between all personas. He's as cold as Jung-hwan or sometimes quiet as Taek. His act screams Jung-hwan so much that it seems really suspicious. Like it wouldn't be any other guy except Jung-Hwan, ...so we just need to wait Deok-Sun to really like him. We all like Jung-Hwan and that is suspicious too. hahaha because sometimes Second Lead Syndrome is the majority. Just hope that he didn't get broken heart after all that.
But then when you remember that future Deok-sun said that she never imagine marry to this guy, Jung-Hwan and Taek (and Dong-Nyong) are on the list. I'm saying Taek is in it, because you don't say 'Grow up well so I can marry you' to someone you actually want to marry, eh?
And again when she said that she remembered that she gave chocolate to the husband (when it was actually Sun-Woo), I don't think she would forgot if she gave to someone who rejected her. In other Reply Series too, heroins' first loves were the ones who won. Sun-Woo is now off the list, but still, ep 6 is too early to tell without plot holes.
Plot Twist: Dong-Nyong is the husband. (He would smoke, he didn't get the chocolate, he seems exhausted, he would have many girlfriends before Deok-Sun, he actually would know everything, but no, when Deok-Sun dancing, he would dance too.)
And 30 years is a long time, people could change. Anyone can be like anyone this time. Jung-Hwan can be little more like Taek, or vise versa. Or, Sun-Woo or Dong-Nyong. I don't know, I can't believe anything anymore. I don't even have ship to sail.

0

My same exact thought! JH loves to see her dance but Taek closes the door on her...

0

i hope he's the husband too.. but for some reason i dont know if the only person notice or just i because i really want Taek to be husband.

I read the coloring stuff credential. It make sense though, but for me it different person on what i read..for me color yellow is Taek (his bday is full of yellow, i always see yellow, and green one is DS (always wear green, bag green etc.) and JH is blue... ^^

Anyway.. DS and Taek !!! i feel Taek have something deeper and his growing up will be one of the highlight here... ^^

And for the husband part, I'm scared too because of Girlfriday's translation of the present day when Adult Deok-sun said, “Do you want me to name all the people you dated before we got married? Shall we stay up all night?”

That means they will definitely break up or something before they get together and he is the one who is the player or the one gets a lot of girls ... and there will be a lot of hurt for Deok-Sun before they get together. I don't know how to handle this!!!

Plus, god I love that they're finally giving Bogum more screen time. Of course, my heart is anticipating all the pushing a pulling of this romance, god dammit though I don't want to.

"all the girlfriends" could actually be now, before they get together or maybe it's all in DS' mind lol. Junghwan just does not come across as a player to me. I think he'd be loyal even if he was away going to school. Though they are only 18 years old so I wouldn't be surprised if they separate for awhile (and even date around, but not seriously) and go to college and then get back together. I don't really want them to marry as teenagers anyway. I don't think we should be scared since they obviously work out in the end.

Nooo, why'd it have to be Taekie?!! I definitely think Jung Hwan's the husband, but I won't be able to handle Taek being rejected.

I knew we weren't stretching that jacket theory HAHAHA although it seems like Jung-hwan's hyung likes Unnie, too. (Side note: I really found it adorable that Jung-hwan shamelessly admits that he really likes his brother even when all the world finds Hyung weird). Although I am rooting for Sun-woo for Bora because I think I've shipped them since. (And it's just so adorable having this meta-knowledge that Go Kyung-pyo and Ryu Hye-young are actually best friends and childhood friends in real life. *squee*)

I wasn't surprised at all that Taek is the other side to the triangle. Why else would Park Bo-gum be here? Although I still am standing firm in Jung-hwan's side when it comes to the romance. I'm curious how Taek will approach and act on his feelings for Deok-sun. Right now, Jung-hwan's moments of expressing his feelings have been ingrained with me that I don't see myself jumping ship ever. It will totally break my heart if the show decided it's Taek she ends up with. I love Gummy, of course, but Jung-hwan's already occupying that space in my heart. So, let's see.

I know we're headed into a frustrating love triangle, and a possible ship war soon (but can we please not); I just hope the family and friendship theme do not get lost underneath it all.

And like everyone's woes: another agonizing days to wait for the subs. Thanks as always, GF! You're awesome!

True. If Taek is the husband, I'm looking forward to seeing how he adjusts to the world or becomes more talkative. I'm just curious to see what he's going to do in showing his feelings like you.

So far, we don't know much about his personality except that he's shy, isn't very eccentric (except for being an idiot in baduk-unrelated things), and is a sensitive person but tries to seem adult like/strong.

oh my I didn't know that GKP and RHY were real life best friends and childhood friends??? where was this information from? I want to know more. ahah. It must be a bit awkward for them to act as love interests in this drama? I mean I know I may feel awkward if I were to act with my childhood best friend as a love interest.

I really really love Deok-sun and Jung-hwan together (they're legit perfect for each other) , but I just can't bear to see Taek heart broken, ugh. This show is so unfair and I hate it, but I just love it too much. You get me? Ugh, if Taek is left with no one on this show, I volunteer as tribute.

Your comment make me thinking. Actually, maybe the husband is dong ryong?

Required fields are marked *

No, I don't think so. Dong-Ryong isn't smart or like book smart. Present Deok-sun described her husband as 'he use to be so smart before'. And we all know Dong-Ryong isn't that when she was surrounded by the 3 other first-place boys during her childhood.

Required fields are marked *

I think so too. But actually what get me thinking the husband is Dong-Ryong not because of the smart part, but the player part. Talking about smart however, Jung-Hwan always go to Dong-Ryong whenever he need advise.

Maybe AM series this time, wanna give us the ultimate twist. That's quite possible.

I think Dong-Ryong is sure smart too! I mean all of the guys are smart in this series, it's just that Jung-Hwan and Sun-Woo are more book-smart, Taek is baduk-only-smart (wait, we don't use smart on Taek, he's genius), but Dong-Ryong, he's the complete tricky. He may not know English, but he sure have a lot know-hows to disguise to watch Rated-R movies or the famous dance-routine.

We live surrounded by 'high-IQ people surely overshadows the high-EQ' :/

Well, it's pretty obvious who's DS husband, judging by the way of being, it is JH. Since, apparently, even in theur adults selves, they still keeping a distinct personality. Even adult Bora is almost the same.

So, Taek it's gonna be Chilbong 2.0, although I hope that the writter doesn't go the way of the disease/death with all these medications around Taek.

Required fields are marked *

I agree. Also unless Sunwoo and Deok-sun spoke about it, the only person who witnessed Deok-sun's first snow rejection from Sunwoo was Jung Hwan. Considering the husband was making fun of her rejection, it only further supports that its most likely Junghwan especially if you consider the husband's personality compared to JH's current personality.

I don't see Taek being able to change so much personality wise or to date a lot before marrying Deok-Sun which apparently the current husband did.

My theory: DS and Taek would date in college, while JH dated other girls. Then, eventually, DS and JH got together. OMG, I hope I'm wrong.

I think he's just stressed out. Too stressed out for a teenager and needs to slow down and live a little (which he's going to do soon). I don't think he's deathly ill or anything. It just doesnt' seem like that type of drama.

I think it's stress too, along with the travel, being alone much of the time. Good to see him start to come out of his shell a bit. I think a good match for him would be DS's friend.

Thank you so much for posting recaps so fast.I love this drama so much that I'm watching raw and then rewatching with subbs on monday and Tuesdays when dramafever.com post them. Since you've already watched it I don't need to put spoiler alerts. I am certain now that jung kwan is her husband but if they really are heading towards the triangle with taek I'm going to be really sad because I love him! It's already sad enough so if his heart gets broken too it'll be too hard to watch.

Not surprised that Taek just passed out after the games. After all person with any serious experience with any sport (yes, a sport) like chess or baduk can easily tell how draining that is. Like, I literally perspired during the game and I wasn't playing at top levels like Taek.

The ones at the top are usually unhappy because they're alone in understanding just how hard it is to keep besting oneself and others and they're alone in carrying the expectations that burden them.

Yeah, he's exhausted. I'm thinking that those pills are not serious. It may be just aspirin. ...And how if he actually quits and open himself to the world?

unless he's Chilbong 2.0, who would pursue his career, still sucks in real life, and never gets the girl.

This show has got me since their first episode. It touched me on so many levels. Love their friendship and the stroylines about the parents-children relationship. This show keeps me going and sane :).
I don't want to be trapped in the WHO_IS_THE_HUSBAND game just like I did in REPLY 1994. I was in Chilbongie team and was so brokenhearted till now that made me still not watched the last episode.
As for this series, I just wanted to enjoy the ride. I will be happy for the husband, regardless. I love everyone in this show. SW's lil sistes steals my attention everytime too.

It's so obvious that Jungwhan is the husband, but i still want Taekii to be with DokSun. Can there be a plot twist where the 2nd lead can finally get the girl? I haven't fully recovered from Chilbongie and now this? Writer-nim, please dont break my heart again.

Hahahaha, Taek was not even the 2nd at start. The first game was Jung-Hwan and Sun-Woo. Now one down, and replaced by Everyones-Ultimate-Favorite-That-Would-Make-Everyone-Angry-If-Writer-Nim-Breaks-His-Heart.

FYI, my first reason to watch 1988 was Park Bo-Gum, then realize he's not the first lead, not even the second, and maybe just like 97's Joon-Hee, or 94's Binggeurae. ...until knowing that he's actually in the game.

Am I the only one who from the beginning really loved the idea of Teak and Deoksun? He just seems like he needs her more than Junghwan does. Like he is so broken and sad and her personality is so good for him. He is kinda of like a little puppy, he doesn't know anything of the world except baduk. She helps him without criticizing him. I don't know I just really liked them together. haha I feel like Junghwan would be okay if she didn't like him but Taek has been through so much in his life and he is so socially stunted that it would be hard for him to connect with someone else. She understands him in such an in depth way that it helps him to reach out. I adore Junghwan but something about sad little Taek being in love just gets me in the heart. I want my little puppy to be happy.

I'd be happy if either one ends up with Deok-sun, I just don't want there to be heartbreaking over it and this whole push and pull game the writers are trying to play with us.

I definitely understand why Taek would fall for Deok-sun. He's never met any other girl that's more important to him during the years of his life so it's only natural he develops a crush on the only girl in his life.

There's a theory that Deoksun will go study abroad later when she enter college. There's an Australian map and a toy flight in her room.

If she does go abroad and it's a timelapse before she and her husband get together. The time spent apart explain how he had other dates with many women beside her.

Logically that development would make sense. But then it'd be hard to afford an education abroad with her family's finances, and she doesn't quite seem the type to win a scholarship for it. Unless she doubles her IQ at some point.

Well we doubt that Shi-won could go to college either but she did using her fanfic writing skills. Maybe the writers will pull one on us like in Reply 1997.

I'm ignoring the possibilities of Taek being seriously ill. I just don't want that for him, so I do like a grade schooler and ignore what upsets me. Lol. If I don't think it, it won't happen, but so far that method hasn't worked in any other drama. Like in '94, Chilbongie wasn't Najungs husband. So far for the reply series, I've mostly been a second lead shipper. Well except for '97, I was all for Yoonjae then.

I couldn't finish 1994 because of Chilbong, and then I saw She Was Pretty where Shin Hyuk absolutely destroyed me, and now Taek!

I knew the writers were saving him up this far for something big, and I have such mixed feelings!! On one hand I'm so happy that Deok Sun could possibly help him break out of his shell, and be happy, but on the other, if he ends up dying or something it'll be the end of Korean dramas for me for a long while (I can't say ever).

IT'S BECAUSE OF KOREAN DRAMA WRITERS THAT I HAVE TRUST ISSUES

I honestly think the husband is Jung Hwan. But i like Taek more,...not necessarily as Deok Sun's husband though. I'm a sucker for the quiet sort with a tragic past. And have we not learned anything from the last 2 Reply Series? Never board any ship! Its always turbulent and you have sudden bouts of pirates infestation or being turned into one. (Though, i must say all the ships i've boarded for the Reply Series had docked safely at Port Marriage)

I think it's really Sunwoo because he wouldn't smoke (because of his Mom) and after that confession (which eliminates him from husband candidate) we have a new candidate (Taek). I do really like Jung Dong as well though. I hope he finds a woman for him too.

Just yesterday I said I was all for Jung-hwan, but now Taek is in the running?! What am I going to do? Taek was my favorite from the beginning until Jung-hwan became so swoony. Now Taek is back in the running with his sweet smile?! I don't even know what to do. Deok-sun you nutjob. The only reason you started liking Sun-woo was because your friends said he liked you. Get over him fast and look at the ones who are genuine! But seriously, how am I going to choose between Jung-hwan and Taek?! That is an IMPOSSIBLE choice to make!

Every 10 minutes, I pause the drama just to scream and go crazy for a minute ("I'm freaking done with this show!") only to continue watching.

I didn't know I would be this hooked to this drama. Said I'm done with husband hunts but... DAMMIT! I JUMPED SHIPS THRICE NOW! If the writers decide to give Taek a broken heart, I'm flying to SKorea to give them a slap of reality! Don't be too mean to the little boy, please! My heart ached so much for Taek.

The relationships (between friends and families) is still the best thing in 88 for me. I hope that they don't stray so far from it once lovelines get the center stage. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the romance side of it too but it'a nice to have everything balanced.

My love for this drama is so unhealthy though. I might need rehab once it's over. My head and heart feels like they're going to explode from all the feels. I hope I'm not the only one. HAHAHA. Thanks girlfriday for the recaps!

Maybe it's a big twist from the writers. JH is very sweet and has a very infectious personality. But I don't know why my heart lies with Taek! Maybe it's because Taeki is so sweet and smart but yet socially awkward. He's probably comfortably interacted with any other girls except for DS I think. Taek reminds me of someone who has a slight case of Asperger Syndrome.

This is exactly what I think, too. I have a daughter with high functioning aspergers and she reminds me of Taek. So smart, highly focused on what they're obsessed (for lack of a better word) with and socially awkward. I also don't think there's anything seriously wrong with him. I just think he's mentally exhausted from being hyper focused on his game.
