Answer Me 1988 delays broadcast in January

I knew Answer Me 1988 was cutting it close to the wire from the start, given that they took two extra weeks to premiere after Twenty Again and didn’t even do a standard pre-show press conference (because they literally didn’t have the time to spare actors and producers for a day), but it looks like the show is headed for another delay. Reps from tvN announced that the series would take a week off mid-run in early January, for the sake of completing the remaining episodes.

The third installment of the Answer Me series is an even bigger hit than its predecessors, and this past Saturday’s episode surpassed the franchise ratings high (previously held by Answer Me 1994’s finale, which averaged 11.9%). With Episode 8 already reaching 12.2%, it’s being called a “national drama” and has managed to step out of 1997 and 1994’s shadows.

But it seems that producers have underestimated the live-shoot crunch. I don’t know why this didn’t occur to them when they were deciding to air 90-minute episodes twice a week. 90 MINUTES! Twice! I could tell you right now how not to take a week off, but somehow doing things the sane way doesn’t seem like their style. On the upside, I guess I can take a weekend off.

So mark your calendars: The show won’t air on January 1 and 2, and will resume on Friday, January 8 with Episode 17. The 20-episode series will then conclude on January 16. You have a month to plan for the week sans Answer Me, so there are lots of things you could do, like plan a 16-episode marathon re-watch (just remember to budget that extra half hour per episode!), or look up recipes for black and white cookies that look like baduk stones (you can call ’em Taekies!), or dress up like Deok-sun for a day to make your friends laugh (make sure to ride the bus in case of hottie!).

Answer Me 1988 airs on Fridays and Saturdays on tvN.

I actually haven't started with 1988 yet so I'll just watch it next year. And maybe I can watch 1994 first. But it's December already and this the season to get so busy with work. I'll get back to my dramas next year.

Thank you so much, girlfriday, for recapping this show even though you have to do it all on your own. Some of us depend on it a lot to understand the show after watching it without subtitles.

Let's just hope that the second half of 88 doesn't resemble the second half of 94, screen time remains evenly split between the parents and kids, and family continues to be the focus. Even so...idk. At least Chilbong was popular and well-adjusted (and frankly it was a giant stretch to imagine that he wouldn't have found someone else after the many time gaps). Taek, on the other hand...it's a giant stretch to imagine him interested in a girl at all, let alone successfully dating one...and let alone making a new group of friends if the love triangle blows up in their faces. This might get very hard to watch and an extra week or so waiting for the axe to fall is going to suuuuuck.

Required fields are marked *

Ey come on. The love triangle won't ruin their friendship. Deoksun got her heart broken by Sunwoo (I think it was puppy love, but who am I to judge another person's heart aches) and got over it. Junghwan thought Sunwoo liked Deoksun but he didn't treat him any worse out of jealousy. They're family... And on a street like that, the people who care about them would drag them back together. Maybe I'm alone in this... But I've never understood why romantic love always seemed to be more important than non-romantic love. When I got heartbroken, my friends and family pretty much carried me through it.

Required fields are marked *

I just mean that love can ruin friendships, not that love is more important than friendship. Just look at Si-won and Yoon-jae in 1997, before the time gap. That's as realistic as this series has ever gotten.

As for me, I've never understood why so many dramas feature two male best friends in love with the same woman (my least favorite movie I've ever seen has to be Jules and Jim). I'd imagine it's extremely unpleasant to be in such a love triangle, which imo is a big part of why Jung-hwan was so relieved Seon-woo liked Bo-ra--he wouldn't have to go through that with him, after all.

0

Required fields are marked *

Shi-won and Yoon-jae before the time gap was pretty realistic, like you said - that bit is actually true to life.

And yeah, the dreaded best friend love triangle. VERY few dramas handle those well - I've actually only seen one drama this year that did it, and managed to work the boys past that realisation without damaging their friendship.

0
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, that's pretty rare. The only dramas I've seen that managed it kind of waffled--in Sandglass they fall for her at different points in their lives, and in The Princess's Man, they didn't stay friends for long, and I'm not really sure you can call the second lead's feelings "love" so much as a desire to possess her, anyway.

idk, I'm not a fan of the whole "bros before hos" thing, but on the other hand, I'm not on board with "hos before bros," either. I get that there's dramatic potential there, but I really hate watching someone get in between two friends, especially when I feel like they're not worth it lol.

0

yeah, mine didn't have that problem - they managed to work out the love triangle without disregarding either the girl's feelings or a decade-old friendship, and all three were fine in the end. And it was all too easy to see why both boys fell for her, so I didn't even end up with those moments of 'nooo, why are you guys tearing yourselves up over that one'.

Come to think of it, 1997 worked out their love triangle pretty well too - even if it was blindingly obvious Shi-won never really loved hyung and was only a teenage girl flattered by the attention.

0

Yeah, thank god 97 worked out. Yoon-jae's hyung was seriously creepy on so many levels. That aside, I think it helped that there were so many thematic layers to it--sacrifice, obligation, loss, maturity, so on--and there was a level of awareness lacking in so many dramas. Few dramas would have had the balls to allow Yoon-jae to walk away from their friendship, but it was so necessary (and cathartic for anyone who knows what he was going through).

They've gotten a lot tricksier since then (when 94 and 88 seem like they're being obvious you have to be even more suspicious), but they've also gotten a lot less honest about this stuff. So I suppose while the resolution of the love triangle will probably feel less real and true to life, the friend group is probably safe like everyone is saying...and at least we don't have to deal with Seon-woo vs. Jung-hwan.

0

yeah, 1997 didn't seem to be totally blind to the faults in hyung/Shi-won's storyline, really - she herself asks if he likes her because she reminds him of her dead unnie. But yeah, it was tangled on so many levels - hyung as an oppa she's known all her life, as Yoon-jae's brother (though he doesn't know Yoon-jae loved her), as a teacher, and her dead sister's fiance.....it could have been so messy. Though what really had me going NOOOOO was the fact that he simply didn't seem to realise how young she was at times. He may have given her what she wanted, but he didn't get her at all (and I had a fresh round of NOOOO when she was grown-up and it looked like hyung wanted to rekindle things - but all things considered, it was handled pretty well)

And it was pretty realistic that Shi-won, as a high schooler, might date someone who made her feel pampered and secure just to see what having a boyfriend felt like, even if she didn't feel anything for him. Thankfully she retained enough self-awareness to realise that her heart was never in it.

It's funny but the other drama I was talking about, is also a Jung Eunji drama - Sassy Go Go. That one handled its love triangle brilliantly, which is quite a feat considering how many of us were praying for no love triangle at all. It's a rare example of friendship and honesty carrying the day and leaving everyone better off for it - both the fact that they fell for her, and how they ultimately dealt with it.

0

Cool. I didn't watch that one because I'm allergic to cheerleading lol, but it seemed really well-loved here. It's always nice when these things actually work out well!

idk, I always felt Hyung was creepy because he seemed into infantile women--not just Si-won (though seriously...how can you date your little brother's best friend!?), but her sister (one ep of her was enough to see she was just as immature and selfish), and to a lesser degree the woman he ended up with as well. And every time he moved on, he seemed to be replacing the last one--Si-won replaced her sister, and his wife replaced Si-won (he liked her because she was a fangirl like Si-won).

0

@juniper - there's very little actual cheerleading in Sassy Go Go, it's more about the process of forming the team and working with each other for various reasons, plus dealing with a stressful high school. It's really more friendship-centric than anything else, so if you have any tolerance for high school dramas at all, do give it a go.

And yeah, I see your point about hyung and the replacement links between the people he dated.....he does seem to have a certain personality type he's drawn to, and Shi-won and her sister were the type he could baby a lot. And though it's presented as a practically sterile relationship (which, thank god since Shi-won was what, 16? 17? when it started? That's not even close to age of consent), at least some people in-universe acknowledge that it's seen as weird - like hyung's co-workers getting a shock on discovering that his girlfriend is in her senior year of high school and not college.

I seriously don't think Shi-won even thought of a boyfriend in anything but completely abstract terms, because her actual romantic feelings/energies were so focused on Tony oppa lol. She wasn't going to come out of her fangirl love bubble for hyung, even if she liked him well enough and 'dating' to her = going out to eat and drive around and be taken care of.

0

Okay, if I'm ever in the mood for a high school drama, I will check it out!

Yeah, I agree about Si-won. If things had gone at her speed instead of the two brothers', I'm sure she would have ended up with Yoon-jae eventually, without any major drama. As it is, Yoon-jae forced the issue before she was ready, while hyung indulged her immaturity by letting her use him.

0

People don't give Taek enough credit. He's not some child even if he can't do some basic things. And their friend ships won't be ruined by something like that.

Here here.
Unlike a lot of male characters in dramas, as soon as he sees an in with the girl he likes, he goes for it; and he's also been sensitive and kind toward his friends. He may have some limitations in terms of getting through life, but he shows a lot of maturity by being so straightforward about what he wants. He's pretty clearly not the "husband," but I think it wouldn't be out of character if the drama showed him being ultimately successful with someone.

(I haven't seen this weekend's eps, but I hope he continued to be awesome.)

Dear Reply Crew,

You are doing a great job on writing, storytelling, acting, etc. The stir and characters are a treat to watch every week. Kudos I'm the well deserved ratting record breakers and rising popularity of your stars. However you all really need to learn to edit down your episodes to 60 minutes or there abouts. You told s beautiful stir in that time or less with R97 then you did the same for the first half of R94, then things went insane towards the end (episode 18 clocked in at an hour 45 minutes. WTF!?!?). I know the show is really popular so you figure why mess with a good thing, but just because one loves something does not mean it has no faults. I can feel the episode length as I watch aka too many scenes run on for too long. You can definetly trim down scenes to meet an hour or so broad cast time. Seriously you guys air back to back full length movies and sometimes Bollywood length movie ?. Cut down on the episode length! I can see this story dragging and lots of unnecessary scenes taking place all to fill in an hour and sometimes more than half of airing time. It's insane to live shoot something of this length twice a week!?!? You make two Hollywood films twice a week 0.o how are your actors and crew not dead!?!? For your own sakes and sake of the show, please amend this.

A loyal concerned viewer.

P.S: curse you CJ E&M for your exclusive deal with those that shall not be named. Their subs < V.

I like it too as a fan, but to give you an answer... Because they obviously lack the time for all the scenes they need to take and all the editing required, that's why... Plus all those poor cast members... Hope Junghwan doesn't get those nosebleeds for real. :(

Thanks Bea. I completely understand but its not like the are going to keep filming and editing for ever!! When they went with the 90 mt format I am sure they factored in the pains that come with it. They are getting behind schedule and everyone must be worked up. But look at the end product and the stardom and success the cast and crew will get to enjoy for years to come! My take...always think long term! The finance specialist in me talking.
Nonetheless, I am enjoying this series much more than my love for 1997! Jung Hwan is so much like Joon Jae...and Takie..love him from Remember me! I am shipping anyone with anyone at this time. Noona Bora with JH's hyung also will work for me :)

I actually think the long scenes fit the show well. I've never thought they are too long or draggy but they like to spend more time on the characters and with the characters. Sometimes with other dramas I feel it's the opposite. Feelings emerge from what seems like it's nowhere etc..
Reply is kinda like slice-of-life drama, so having this kind of a pace actually fits that. Not sure if I make sense to anybody...

12 percent?! Woah 1988 is really killing it. Gosh it's such a good show that it deserves all the praise. I'm a bit behind by a couple eps, 90 minutes are a stretch for me, so I can't wait for that one week in January to catch up properly. It must put a lot of pressure on them to shoot episodes that long each week, but since it's doing so well in the ratings I hope everyone benefits from it big time.

Surprisingly, I don't even notice the hour and a half episodes. I'm so engrossed in the story that I never want the episodes to end. It's still too early to say for sure, but so far, 1988 is surpassing 1997 and 1994 in my book.

I'm so happy for their hit ratings. During their V app special before the drama aired, the female cast promised to visit an all-boys high school and treat them to a meal if ratings reached 8%, while the male cast promised to visit an all-girls high school and play games if ratings reached 10%. 1988 already achieved those ratings in episodes 4 and 5, respectively. I wish ratings can hit 18% like they had hoped for them to fulfill their last promise to fans.

I think I'm the lone freak who isn't watching this. I've been burned hard last year because of Chilbongie that I refuse to go through another emotional roller coaster like that. But I'm really happy for the franchise even if they're really pushing it with 90 min. When Producers aired for 75 min, I was already questioning the scheduling and how they could possibly shoot that and air on time. Specially with some actors in that drama (like KSH) being in almost every scene. Good thing the Answer Me franchise have a lot of leads and important supporting characters.

But that means Signal is also delayed now. Never a bad thing to get a few more episodes under their belt and avoid situations like these.

I knew this show was popular when my middle school student's were tossing out Jung Hwan's dad's cheesy greeting left and right at the school's festival this week. Leg squat handshake and everything. Hilarious. Also, one class performed the show's theme song, lol.

I wonder if somewhere along the way anyone even thought to mention "hey, maybe we should make our episodes shorter so we can catch up to filming?" or if they are just so set on that length that it never occurred to them...? Whatever, crazy people. I love you anyway.

At least the focus on an extended cast doesn't make the episode length seem quite so bloated, with more characters to fill up that time.

Madly in love with this series. I love the Reply 1997 and it was partly why I started this series.
But I am loving it more than Reply 1997(I watch Reply 1994 after I got too addicted with Reply 1988 but still loving Reply 1988 even if I just compare the 1st 8episodes).

I agree that 1hr 30minutes per ep is not enough for me.
Can't believe I am complaining 3hrs a week is not enough, but that is how much I am addicted to this series.
If you find it too long, maybe watch 45minutes at a time? :D

It's amazing that this show is on par (and beating some) of ratings for weekday and weekend dramas.

I think the delay is good, people will be busy anyway around that time. It's good the cast is large though, because 180 minutes live shooting a week can't be fun.

Well... apparently all those books I keep saying I'll read but never get around reading, will get a chance on the weekend after new years .... damn... This is the first Reply I've watched while it aired and I had no idea it was as addictive as crack.... now I don't know what I'll do with my life on that weekend! ?

Hardly surprising since they're trying to film enough material for what is the equivalent of 2 feature films a week.

With a large cast and numerous locations takes a lot of time to set up each shot; the one good thing about a big cast is that it gives the actors not shooting some down time/time to rest (doubt they have a 2nd unit).

I might go and make those "Taekies", but then nobody will know what they are except me. :P

i still like the original (1997) the best overall, but i think hyeri might be the cutest heroine of the lot. she's adorable! i can't get over how well she pulls off the late 80s/90s look.

and i think she's doing a lot better than i could have hoped for, and i did hope she would deliver. visually, i think she's got "it," and i always thought she had lots of charm, a la suzy. but man i didn't think she would so completely become her character, deok-sun.

totally not fussed about the schedule gap either. a week is nothing if it means those actors get a bit of a breather while filming.

The original will always be my favorite too!! But this one really has turned out pretty great so far. I was hopefuly HYeri would deliver as well, and she really really has. She is super cute and she can ugly cry with the best of them. I hope she continues to grow and expand in her career.

1997 is my least fave since like the "gangs" better in 1994 and 1988; plus wasn't really into the whole crazy fangirl-thing which took up so much of 1997.

For all the grief about Hyeri's casting, think she has done (up to this point) the best job of the 3 female leads.

Hyeri has hit the spot w/ regard to her facial expressions/emotions (she has a very expressive face) w/o overdoing it - she really does seem to be the character of DS instead of playing her.

I actually think the more spread-out nature of the 1988 story (not requiring Deok-sun to carry the entire focus, but giving the parents major screen time too) is a blessing in disguise for Hyeri - she does come close to over-egging the pudding, so to speak, and that would probably start to grate if the story was as lead-centric as 1997.

have to agree w/ pogo on this one. the charm of 1988 seems to be the whole cast and the 'neighborhood' feel of the series. the character of jung hwan is the one killing it in this series, major props for the actor, who's facial expression is priceless!!!

I'm sure the show will come around to it, but I just have to say it nonetheless, "Show, don't forget about Dong Ryong!"
