Sung Joon considers JTBC’s Madam Antoine
by javabeans
So Sung Joon (High Society) is up to join Han Ye-seul (Birth of a Beauty) in the upcoming JTBC drama Madam Antoine, which strikes me as… an interesting pairing. Maybe I mean odd. Maybe even a little mismatched?
The drama is the medical-rom-com series about clinical psychologists that comes from the PD of My Name Is Kim Sam-soon and Que Sera Sera and the writer of Mi-rae’s Choice and The King 2 Hearts. I see why the casting went for Sung Joon in that he has a connection to PD Kim Yoon-chul, who directed him in JTBC’s well-received Can We Marry, though I’m still trying to figure out how the pairing would work.
I do like both actors separately, but they each have such different styles. Han Ye-seul’s best in those over-the-top bold characters who maybe don’t exist in reality, like a heroine out of an old-school screwball comedy. I really enjoyed her in Birth of a Beauty, even when the drama started to tank; she and Joo Sang-wook suited each other well in the farcical madcap scenes, and I was sad when that tone faded into angst.
Sung Joon, on the other hand, does well playing the straight man, less broad and more realistic; he’s played a lot of sweet boyfriends (Discovery of Romance, I Need Romance 3), though he’ll forever have my heart as the broody rocker simmering with teenage rage in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band. I’m really curious to see how they’d suit, IF they’d suit. On the upside, if he’s playing a shrink in this drama, he has experience in that role. On the downside, maybe we don’t want his shrink to be a psycho this time?
For now, we have no word on their characters or the plot, other than that it’s a romantic comedy about psychologists and healing pain. Madam Antoine is set to follow D-Day on weekends in November.

I'd say it's a hit or a big miss.

Everything is about 'healing pain' these days, but I gotta admit that I enjoyed some of them (surprisingly It's Okay is my favorite).
I love Sung Joon but Han Yeseul... not so much. So for now I cannot see how this couple will work since yeah as you said, they're odd. But I'll still watch though, for the sake of Sung Joon's acting that I love very much (and him wearing a doctor coat is something I won't say no to)

Apparently since Hyun Bin is working, everyone in his company is working too(considering Shin Minah's comeback and Sungjoon's offer). All he needs is to get Kim Namgil a job and his company would all have work to do.

But Kim Nam Gil also get offers for movie too, right? Or probably shooting a movie right now?
In my perfect delulu dream, I'd prefer KNG over Sung Joon for this drama.

KNG has had the most work out of everyone this year, he starred in 3 movies and he already has one planned out for next year, so don't worry about him. He's doing more than fine.

"Madame Antoine" follows "D-Day" (Friday-Saturday 8:30-9:40 p.m.) in mid-November.

That's what I don't get about him. I was never particularly taken by his acting, but at least he was watchable before. He has oddly gotten noticeably worse by each project. How does this happen to someone? Has he just given up or what.

Perhaps the concepts on cable channels fit him more. No live-shooting helped him rehearsing and gave him more time to adjust to those projects. But, to be honest, I feel those dramas were his limit in terms of acting because the storylines and the directing emphasised on his strong points and artfully "camouflaged" his flaws (which outnumber his alleged talent). The mainstream networks always manage to exhaust skillful actors, let alone mediocre young "stars" who are not exactly "blue chips" in K-ent (no matter what some fans think ).

As I said on my previous comment, it's because he is good playing characters that are serious, like in White Christmas, SUFBB and in the film Pluto.
These kind of projects are harder to be successful (White Christmas is really popular among Western fans - it's often mentioned in forums as an incredible drama - but I wonder if people in Korea remember of it) and well, we can't blame actors if they want to be successful (which is easier in rom-coms). Other factor is that older actors usually take the roles he would be great on it (although I don't think people realize he is young).
Well, someday he will be on a drama that I actually can care about again. I believe.

Tbh after 2 unsuccessful drama (though i kinda enjoyed him being the bad guy in HJM and dont even get me started about High Society which i dont even know what is the point of him being in that drama), i was really hoping that Sung Joon will some how go back to cable drama. I dont know what it is but some how he is picking up drama poorly nowadays or he is just playing it safe?

I still think the girls rowed that boat even if the boys were the ones that took all the credit in Can We Get Married. Nevertheless, K-ent preferred the male actors to promote instead of the talented ladies who are still struggling for decent roles or any roles period. Han Groo has zero projects after Marriage, Not Dating and chose to get married while Jung So Min has less work on TV than SSK or IU.

Not a fan of Sung Joon... I don't think he suits the sweet guy character or the cold city guy character. I think the best kind of role for him is the carefree, fun kind of guy. He seems a lot more natural in those roles. But in general, I don't think he is quite main role material yet.

SJ recently just repeated himself. It seems that he is deep in one character and cannot leave it. Although I like him that's my impression . About HYS I didn't like her act in Birth of a Beauty and I'm not sure if I like to see in any other drama. Obvoiusly in my point of view this pair wouldn't work.

As much as I love Sung Joon, I don't think that he has the comedic chops to pull off a proper rom-com. Him as a psychiatrist brings up bad memories too.

Yes, please. I don't think Sung Joon is good enough nor compatible enough to be paired with Han Ye Sul. If we need a young actor to play the lead Soe In Guk is definitely a much better choice. I don't see Sung Jun has the lead material quality or that certain somethinng that will set him apart from other young actors.
Do we have to have a young actor in it? Why don't choose a more experience actor to be paired with Han Ye Seul? Ehm, I'm going to offer my bias for this role. Jo Hyun Jae as a crazy doctor everyone?
I'd love to see him and Han Ye Seul together on screen.

For people who are wondering why Sung Joon's acting isn't that good, it's because he is good when he plays characters who are serious (like in White Christmas).
He should be in a thriller / crime drama, I'm tired to see someone like him doing only romance dramas. That's why is bad when guys are too good looking, they become typecast as romantic guy or ultimate bad boy.
Wish I could see him in something like White Christmas again (without being in high school, of course), or something like Bad Guys or Heartless City (I know he is young, but seeing the romantic dramas he has done before, many people don't know he is only 25).

Not going to lie but when i saw this news i was like "Not another rom-com again" I was really expecting him to choose a different kind of drama genre for his next project and step out from that romantic guy cum noona killer image already.

The thing about Sung Joon is, while he awed me the first time I saw him in Shut Up, the second and third time I saw him in other dramas, I feel like seeing the same person/character. It`s like I see the same Sung Joon just in different setting, plot, and girls. He doesn't embody the characters he is supposed to play. He is gorgeous of course but it gets boring after few times.
That's how I saw Lee Soo Hyuk too (his characters in What's Up and White Christmas are pretty much the same) until I saw him in Savvy. Of course he`s most fun as Gwi and when an actor breaks that bubble of safe-image, thats when he becomes memorable.

Sung Joon couldn't move his facial muscles properly for God's sake in High Society and got his limelight stolen by Park Hyung Sik and Lim Ji Yeon and their combined chemistry. I do hope this turns out better if he is cast. He really need to step up his game, HS was a complete miss for him.

I watch him on High Society and honestly I am even more impress with Hyungshik acting, who is an idol, than him. And that is saying something when an idol outact an actor. He is so stiff. I don't know if maybe he just don't suit the character so his acting turn out so stiff and don't felt natural at all or his just not that good in acting. I don't wanna judge him yet because I haven't really watch any of his other dramas to say that he really is bad at acting but if it's just the character then maybe next time he should pick a character that actually matches him or a character he knows he can act well because I swear I dislike him on High Society. I only watch that drama for Hyungshik's character and to make sure he have a happy ending. I actually don't like Sungjoon and UEE there.
Anyway since I am not a fan of both I probably will not watch this unless it has good reviews later on and people actually testified that both SJ & HYS acting improved and are atleast good now. I still wish them both luck though.

When you stick the two side-by-side like that, they look alike, haha. Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing this pairing if it all goes through. I feel like Han Ye Seul's real-life bubbly personality will rub off well on Sung Joon (who is pretty serious irl, haha). Maybe it could lead to something interesting on screen.
But who knows. I certainly always like giving odd pairings a shot.

I am not sure why javabeans call the two actors a mismatched? I understand there is an age difference but Sung Joon has been paired with older women before.
As for Sung Joon's cool aloofness in High Society, well that role is not meant to be over emotive anyway.
I like this pairing, will certainly take a peek if it is confirmed.

I've managed to watch A LOT of Sung Joon's previous work, most of them purely on accident. The shows interested me and he just happened to be in them, but I agree his acting seems to be getting worse not better. I thought he was great in Shut Up Flower Boy Band, Can We Get Married, and Discovery of Romance. But his acting was laughably bad in HJM and was subpar in High Society. But that whole drama's storyline kind of tanked near the end anyway. I used to think he was a good actor, but now I'm not so sure. Here's to hoping he picks better projects, but based on this drama's presence not so sure this is going to be a good one.
