The swords come out for Six Flying Dragons’ posters

Ha, my first thought upon seeing this new poster for SBS’s upcoming sageuk Six Flying Dragons was that Yoo Ah-in looks more like a fashion model than a warrior or a royal. Perchance he’s striking a pose to become Joseon’s fiercest model-turned-king? Sure, he’s holding a sword up to Kim Myung-min, but he’s also flashing us his best smize and Blue Steel.

Yoo and Kim will play two of the six “dragons” of the title—that is to say, the six movers and shakers driving the drama—with the rest of the main characters depicted in the group poster below. (With red dragons in the backdrop, just in case we forgot the whole dragon motif. As if we could!)

In addition to Yoo Ah-in playing future King Taejong and Kim Myung-min offering up conflict as his political rival Jung Do-jeon, there’s Shin Se-kyung as the main love interest, Byun Yo-han and Yoon Kyun-sang as skilled swordsmen protecting men on opposing sides, and Chun Ho-jin playing our hero’s father and the founder of the Joseon nation, King Taejo.

The text on the second poster reads, “The battle between power and righteousness. We will make a new nation.” Yes, history tells us that much, but will you do it with fashion-model flair? (Something tells me yes. Not that this is a bad thing, mind!)

Six Flying Dragons kicks off on October 5.

Oh my good, you read my mind bbstl. I definitely concentrated on Yoo Ain's left nostril coz of his supermodel-dazzlin-flashes-around-me pose. Haha. Like a sageuk poster ripped off from an Esquire magazine, photoshopped to wear traditional clothes.

Kim Myung-min, the great Kim Myung-min. Enough said. Pure talent. Gold actor. I am now expecting a lot from this drama. Who is the good guy? Is it Kim or Yoo?

Depends on how you define "good." Kim is playing Jung Do-jeon, who thought the court should have more power than the king, while Yoo is playing Lee Bang-won, who wanted an absolute monarchy. Sure, on a human and systemic level, Lee Bang-won looks a lot worse (he killed a lot of people to get the throne), but the whole thing is very complicated politically and philosophically, especially when you consider a) the court gaining power over the king is what drove Joseon to centuries of poverty and stagnation, and b) when Lee Bang-won strengthened the throne, he gave Joseon its most prosperous era and greatest king, Sejong.

...but in this drama? If they pay any attention at all to historical events, I would expect they'll go two ways: either Yoo's "Lee Bang-won" will be a misunderstood bad boy overlooked by his father thanks to his power hungry right-hand man Jung Do-jeon...or they'll turn him into a good person driven to extremes by...random plot conrtivances? So there'll be no "good" or "bad" per se...but neither will there be any political or moral argument about what either of those two figures represent in the larger scheme of things.

"The battle between power and righteousness" Lol spare me please.

We got a hot headed bloodthirsty prince on one side and a grumpy hard core Confucian scholar on the other.

This is the kind of conflicts that would be fascinating with a writer who is not afraid to tap into the facts without worrying about offending the netizens and the fans.

What we are going to get is a young handsome heroic knight in shining armor prince (Yoo Ah-in) as our hero and a grumpy old scholar as our villain (Kim Myung Min).

Too bad it isn't a story about a mysterious swordsman traveling through Joseon. Byun Yo-han looks in character, all mighty and fierce (while the other two boys look like they're just posturing).

Look at the scars/marks on Byun Yo-han's face. They tell a story of their own. It'd like it if this was the drama version of War of the Arrows. All I see is his poster. I rank Chun Ho-jin 2nd in best facial expression.

And I love Bidam!

I understand how you feel about "War of the Arrows" but the difference between talents in drama land and Chungmuro is huge.

Park Hae-Il, Ryoo Seung-Ryong, Writer/director Kim Han-Min who was also the producer, writer and director of "Roaring Currents." These are the talented people that made us love "War of the Arrows"
Making a drama version based on it will be a gigantic downgrade.

Yes, while that's true and I know it very well myself, it's not unheard of to make films into dramas, which hasn't been very successful, but a girl can surely dream. The action in Chuno was very well directed and the styling, setting and cinematography changed the landscape and set a new standard of what dramas could be. Upcoming dramas such as D-Day and Descendants of the Sun are also hoping to change the status quo. Whether that'll be successful or not, I give a nod of yes.

I'd prefer if they leave a good thing alone but that's just me.

I think there is almost a dozen dramas based on the 2nd Manchu invasion. Chuno and Cruel Palace were the only sageuks that I liked from that timeline.

lol I know, right? I like Yoo Ah-in and love Kim Myung-min, but I just know this writer is going to handle Lee Bang-won and Jung Do-jeon so poorly. They are really complicated figures to begin with, and the narrative gets even more complicated when you take the bloodthirsty one and make him the hero. But this isn't going to be like Cruel Palace starring Lee Bang-won--I guarantee they're either going to sidestep his violence (his brothers just fell on his sword, he didn't mean to kill them~!) or romanticize it (the ends justify the means). If her other dramas are anything to go by, Kim Young-hyun would never have the guts to both take Lee Bang-won's point of view, and make an honest attempt to understand his actions without whitewashing them. Aaarrgh, idk. The first episode hasn't even aired, but the posters and promos are already driving me nuts.

This writer is totally fan-girling over Yoo Ah-in based on some of her interviews. All the more reason for her to sugarcoat his character and sidestep the violence so I'm in agreement with your predictions here.

She did manage to turn Bidam (QSD's enemy) into a hero and the queen's lover so distorting history in favor of viewer's approval and a fairy tale romance is nothing new when it comes to Kim Young-hyun.

lol I just can't with the idea of pretty young Lee Bang-won romancing candy girls in between offing his brothers. I get that this isn't going to be a real sageuk, but still.

I have to be on fan-girl mode for this lol. It's going to be hard with Shin Se-Kyun being part of the 6 dragons. I can easily ignore her with Ko Hyun-Jung and Han Suk-Kyu's powerful performance in her past sageuks but if she is going to do more than being Yoo Ah-In's love interest then yea it's going to be a problem so I'm going to focus on Kim Myung Min.

YES! YES! YEEEES! THANK GOD! I just read the hangul on the poster. My prayers have been answered. Kim Myung-min is first-billed! Hurraaaaay, this means a whole lot to me...
I know Kim would not accept second-billed projects. But if Yoo is our main good guy, it is 100% go, go, go! I've got MAD respect for Yoo Ain.

Kim's billing is enough for me to watch this from the beginning til end.

(But I am mad as hell when Lee Yeon-hee was second-billed in Miss Korea. Lee Seon-gyun was first-billed. Whoah, is he the titular role Miss Korea? Hahaha. I feel unfair for Lee.)

I've never noticed the cleft in Yoo Ah-in's chin before but in these photos it really is pronounced. It's a chin dimple that emphasizes his cheekbones and jaw line. Seriously gives off the model vibe instead of the bloodthirsty power-hungry King vibe.
