Lee Jin-wook, Moon Chae-won to headline revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black
by girlfriday
Ooh, Lee Jin-wook (The Time I’ve Loved You) starring in a revenge drama? I like the sound of that. So much brooding to be done! Count of Monte Cristo-inspired manhwa adaptation Goodbye Mr. Black has secured a Wednesday-Thursday timeslot on SBS this fall. The production has been courting Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor) to play the leading lady, and now both leads are confirmed.
The revenge melodrama is an adaptation of a 1980s manhwa series by Hwang Mi-na set in England and Australia, about a man who gets betrayed by his best friend and lover, and framed for a crime. After time spent abroad, he returns with a new identity to get his revenge. It remains to be seen how the story will be adapted, since early announcements about the drama mentioned extended overseas shoots, but the latest casting stories don’t indicate that it’s set abroad.
Lee Jin-wook will star as a Navy SEAL and a member of the Underwater Demolition Team, who was met with misfortune and betrayed by his friend out of the blue. He was once an optimistic man, but after being stabbed in the back by his best friend, he only dreams of vengeance. The drama is about his revenge plot, as he decides to go up against the friend to find out the truth behind his downfall.
In order to invent a new identity, he gets fake-married to Moon Chae-won, a bright, cheerful young woman who’s rough around the edges and does what she pleases. Despite it being a fake relationship for appearance’s sake, she’ll begin to change him in unexpected ways, and help rebuild his ability to love and trust in other people. Yeah but… he’s still going to get his revenge, right?
Directing is PD Lee Chang-min of Bride of the Sun and Birth of a Beauty, and writing is Moon Hee-jung of Can You Hear My Heart and I Miss You. Goodbye Mr. Black follows Village on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November.

Lee Jin Wook has just finished his drama, I really wanted another actor for this role...
I like the concept but I am much less enthusiastic
now -_-'
I really had trouble with SBS, I haven't liked their drama this year.
I hope that their drama will be better in 2016

Lee Jin Wook seems to have a thing for doing Alexandre Dumas works. Three Musketeers and now this. Though I'm surprised the manhwa can get away with being called "Count if Monte Cristo inspired" as opposed to plagiarism.

Omg I would've killed to see park ki woong as MCW's leading man! I mean, can we just all have a moment of silence for their chemistry in war of arrows? They were sizzling although he was trying to kill/rape her! Plus he burned to death but he'll they were HOT onscreen together!
I know he doesn't have the star power to headline this show (but come on, LJW doesn't have THAT much star power either) but park ki woong I would've been excited for.
Someday in the future j would love to see MCW on the small screen with park hae jin, they're both so gorg I might faint if I see them together.

I love how everyone is talking about alpha and beta males and auras, this something I've never fully considered for an actor in drama. It's sad if everyone just based his acting on his recent rom-com.
I think this pairing would be quite nice, both are have good acting chops, and hopefully we get a good adaption of the script please!

I would love to see a reunion between Moon and Kim Moo Yul in a sageuk drama. They didn't have enough scenes together in War of the Arrows.

Not good enough!!! Are we talking about the guy who did Nine Time Travels? Granted that show itself was good, but come on! This guy was in his early 30s, to act like guy who is closer to 40 is something. Look at his body language, his interaction with his BFF, how he talks to her BF and how he looks at his younger self, compare the way she does the news vs. he does. The episode where he looks at her with tears in his eyes, the scene where he sees her in the rear view mirror from the taxi.....so much pain and sadness..you just feel his pain. He totally owned that role. I watched TM just for him. Though he was the second lead (correct??), but he just stole the show from YH . If that is not screen presence, what else? To make judgements after such shows is fine. Opinion differs. But just judge him based on TTWWIL is totally unfair ..I personally think he was the lone fighter in that sinking ship..

I'm optimistic about this drama. I'm pretty confident in LJW, and have no doubts about MCW's acting.
The only problem now: Will the writer deliver something like I Miss You, or something like CYHMH?
That's my largest concern. But anyhow: WELCOME BACK to dramaland, MCW!

Who knew Lee Jin Wook was such an arguable topic...
I love him a lot, I think he'll do well and actually now I am interested in this. I've seen other good actors fail with bad writing; I can't hold that against anyone. I'm ambivalent about Moon Chae Won but I think they will look good together and work well together, too. So, I'll wait for the promo material. But ahhh, I hate all the talk about star power and alpha-male vibes, beta-male vibes...like, none of that is a guarantee for anyfuckingthing. It's a collaborative effort between actor,PD, and writer. All of these things should mesh and the drama should be fine.

Wow, SBS Wed-Thurs lineup! Currently with Yongpal starring JW and KTH, to be followed by Village with MGY, which will be followed by this led by LJW and MCW. While in KBS, dramas in works star SMNxSJS, SHGxSJK, and Jang Hyuk. Definitely looking forward to the big names. The dramas so far this year were mostly ?? so fingers crossed for the upcoming works from all networks. Currently enjoying Twenty Again the most ?? But my favorite so far is definitely Hello Monster ??

I think we should watch first how it turns up than judging it. We don't know how LJW will perform. Just hope nice story written so that actor and actress can pull it off. Nowadays, we cannot trust the story written. Some just dragging down the actors or actress itself.
Hope this story be sucessful.

For those worrying about LJW's popularity, Song Joong Ki wasn't well known when we was paired with MCW in nice guy but that show was a big hit nevertheless.

Song Joong Ki's popularity sky rocketed during TWDR. The rating increased from 8.2% (eps 2) to 16.4% (eps) 3 and 18.8% by eps 4. He was only in it for 4 eps but made a lasting impression on the viewers.

Ahhhh Chae Won unnie... I was hoping for your drama comeback after being gone for soo long, they'll pair you with someone at SJK or Yoo Ah In level.
I feel like LJW is limited in his acting. He is decent in delivering emotions but there is not much depth in it. Which what sets a great actor apart from the mediocre.
Like previous commenters, I would DIE if the male lead is Jung Kyung Ho. I mean, he was so damn good in Smile You, Heartless City n Falling Innocence, I think he would have been perfect. Me is sad.

How on earth is LJW getting such great gigs?
His drama with Ha Jiwon was a flop and yet he gets immediately cast in a high profile show with Moon Chae won. Personally fee the role is miscast, LJW has little screen presence and is kinda boring.
Oh well.

i am pretty sad with Lee Jin Wook, coz he doesnt have a huge fanbase. This guy can act, guys. TWWNIL was a mess, but it would not indicating that he or Ha Ji Won cannot act.
Well, when he was paired with HJW, many ppl said that he was not the same level with HJW.
I dont give a damn about the casting, coz in my opinion both are good casts. Even you put Lee Min Ho, Ji Chang Wook or even Song jong Ki again, not everyone will satisfied. I personally dont think any of these actor are any better than LJW.
What is worrisome actually is about the story.

WOW, can't believe all the PRE - drama over the casting news. I think these two will compliment each other very nicely. They are both solid, mature actors. YIPEE!
I've really liked LJW in the all but the last one, "Time We Put Everyone Else Of Their Misery and Loved Each Other" They made his character too...really...one dimensional. He owned that lead in NINE. Yes..he really does have great eyes, very expressive; and when he's allowed, he can be very funny.
If he's playing a former SEAL, maybe they'll allow him to muscle up a bit, not very common in Korean male actors. He was basically "al dente" in that last series. I'm glad he's back in an action oriented story line.

Would've preferred her to act along the lines of Gong Yoo. At least he would pull off being a former SEAL. lol Plus, his acting chops would match better with Moon Chae Won.
Lee Jin Wook's casting already ruined "A TIME FOR LOVE" for me and now, this drama with Moon Chae Won.
WTF!!!

the script of TTWWNIL is bad, it's not LJW's fault. If you never watch the entire show, please do not leave any irresponsible comment about the actor.

Wonder what's wrong with so much negativity I read here. Moreover, had those actors people suggested instead of him ever been in the running for the role, even? The speculations are so ridiculous I can't understand it. It could be just you read people wished for xxx to take that role, or maybe because it's own your hope that xxx takes it... Don't let the dissapointment make you belittle the chosen actor please. It would just make you sound like a crazy fan. And yes for real actor, not just some popular hot ones.
Hope the drama is good because I like the novel.

I guess MCW is at a level where everyone wants their oppa to star with her and hates on other suggestions or the actual person cast with her... As a fan it's amusing to see. I think Lee Jin Wook will be fine in this role. The story doesn't excite me much, but I like the cast.

Lee Jin Uk is the good actor, he is handsome and he can act.
Those who blame LeeJinUk saying he ruined the show, please comment only after you watch the show, at least half of the show. If you simply blame on him because "hajiwon's drama's rating fail for the 1st time" and "he is male lead who is new and unfamiliar to you", so you think must be his fault, then please, watch the poor writing drama then you will know the reason why it is low rating and even the best actor and actress could not save it.
Please be responsible when you comment anything.
I love Lee Jin Uk and I hope the script for Mr Black can be proper done in advance! Fighting Jin-uk and Chae-won.

For those who never watch NINE or TTWWNIL (entire show), what makes you to drop hates and mean comments on Lee Jin Uk? Please be considerate. You have your favorite and I am sure you do not want your favorite to be insulted by others, so are we, the supporters of LJU.
Lee Jin Uk is a excellent actor and he won the Drama Star(Male) Awards at ‘Mnet 20’s Choice Awards 2013’ for his performance in NINE. Most of the people who watched NINE should know how good his acting is. I love him because of NINE. He always did good job in The Three Musketeers and TTWWNIL (even the script is not good)
All those who support Lee Jin Uk, let’s continue to support him and wish this time the script can be done better and bring out the best of the cast!
