Kim Kang-woo up to join SBS’s Goodbye Mr. Black

Ah, I do like the direction the casting is taking with Goodbye Mr. Black, SBS’s upcoming revenge drama that’s adapted from a The Count of Monte Cristo–inspired manhwa. First we had Lee Jin-wook (The Time I’ve Loved You) and Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor), then Song Jae-rim (Unkind Women), and now the drama is looking to add Kim Kang-woo (Missing Noir M). All in all, quite a solid lineup.

If he takes the role, Kim Kang-woo would play the CEO of a resort that’s part of a chaebol enterprise. When the last chairman came to an untimely end in an accident, Kim Kang-woo went to Thailand to continue the chairman’s work in petroleum development, made a crap-ton of money in the process, got involved in mergers and acquisitions, and secured his place in the financial world as a newly minted chaebol. All that money’s gotta make him an evil guy, right? That’s generally the tenor in dramaland these days, isn’t it? Money-grubbing chaebols are the devil?

That’s speculation, though, since it’s not explained whether the character is (to paint things in black and white) good or bad; the description merely tells us he is one of the main characters. I think there’s a good chance he’s playing an antagonist, since we know that the hero (Lee Jin-wook) is betrayed by his best friend, and I’d be surprised if Kim were cast for anything smaller than the primary villain role.

Which would be the perfect choice, really, since Kim’s an actor who seems to enjoy throwing himself into the evil roles (Story of a Man, The King’s Advisor). Honestly, even when he’s playing the good guy I’m sometimes a little nervous he might take a dark turn. He could go toe to toe with Lee Jin-wook and maybe even win sometimes (which would be a feat, since I feel like Lee Jin-wook loses to nobody these days—isn’t it amazing how suddenly he turned into an actor with all that gravitas and force, with a side of infuriating charm to make him simultaneously extra-frustrating and extra-hot?).

As for the rest of the cast, Moon Chae-won will play the heroine, a bright young woman who fake-marries the hero so he can reinvent himself with a new name. She’s a helper in his revenge mission but also ends up being a primary force in his healing as they fall in love. Song Jae-rim plays a brainy publisher and news editor who believes in the power of media as more powerful than the word of law.

Goodbye Mr. Black will follow Village: Secret of Achiara as an SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama.

So true what you said about Lee Jin Wook, JB! I barely even noticed him in Spy Myung-Wol but in Nine he was just an explosion of awesomeness.
Cannot wait for this. Please be good, drama!

Probably just me, but I'd take Kim Kang Woo as lead over Lee Jin Wook. I feel he will be better choice to play an intense, revenge-driven man.
And playing against type should be easy for experienced actors like them right?

LJW is a good actor, but I think KKW is much better actor and much more charismatic than LJW (for me)... Just hope KKW has an important role here.
If he plays the main villain then I hope his role will be really well written, like Chae Do-woo in Story of a man.

LJW is good enough to play a revengeful character. An intelligent villain can be more challenging, for which KKW is the perfect guy.

Kim Kang Woo is more versatile with his acting then Lee Jin Wook. And this is coming from someone who has seen most of Lee Jin Wook's dramas and I can't say I am a fan of his. I don't mind him but I'd prefer someone else opposite Moon Chae Won.

Sorry Lee Jin Wook fans... :-/ He hasn't won me over yet...

Kim Kang Woo! He would be bring it as a villain. I didn't even venture into the show that should not be named, so I don't share the skepticism on Lee Jin Wook's acting. He was great in Nine.

So excited for Chae Won's comeback. I miss her terribly in dramas. It's been almost two years already, and she finally decides on a script. Please, please be awesome.

I was so excited about Goodbye Mr. Black since I'm fan of the original novel and movie. But when they announce Lee Jin Wook as the lead, don't know why I felt so disappointed. Then, they add Song Jae Rim who was just so-so in Unkind Woman, makes it worst. While so many choice actors in their mid 30s, they choose him. Lee Jin Wook's actings always makes me sleepy. Why not Kim Kang Woo as Mr.Black instead?

i find that whole casts are perfect in talent and look-wise. Moon Chae Won as always will show her great acting. I like lee jin wook in Nine and he was awesome in it. But suddenly kim kang woo turn up and i feel a bit worried if KKW would stole LJW thunder in Good Bye Mr. Black. I knew it already KKW has acting chop and used to be lead male. However, KKW got a lot of evil flare so much from him so he should be good in antagonist role. LJW on the other hand has that kind of his acting style but that is what make him unique. Based on the writer, i feel really nervous. I hope she didnt written a script like missing you because it was so much melodrama, disturbing and heartwrenching. I do hope she pull off something like Can you hear my heart+stairway to heaven in this drama. Thus, it would be sometimes heartwarming, melodrama but addicting.

--- REAL TALK, IGNORING RIM COMMENTS ---

I agree Kim Kang Woo can act the lead very well but he will be really great as bad guy too. Strong villain makes a strong hero, so I have no complaints

+11111 I don't get why people want Kim Kang Woo to be lead in this case, just because LJW "isn't good enough". This isn't a rom-com. :/

Evil roles are harder to do. Conflicted characters that you don't know whether to hug and cure with cookies or just run over with a Truck of Doom? They add an extra layer of awesome to dramas.

See: I Hear Your Voice, Liar Game, Badjusshi in City Hunter... even Kim Kang Woo's role in Story of A Man/Slingshot.

If I had a good actor and a great actor, I'd put my good actor in the nice guy role, which is easy to make sympathetic. Then I'd put the great actor in the bad guy role, where he can emote his ass off and evoke sympathy and f*ck with my audience's minds and make them question their morality... I guess I'm a bit twisted that way. But I love it when dramas do that.

-- END REAL TALK --

Oooh it would be great to see Kim Kang Woo in this drama. The only time I've seen him act was in Missing Noir M and I liked it. There were times when I wasn't sure if he was a good guy or if he was going to turn bad. I could definitely see him playing the antagonist this time.

...Buuut I'm not sure how I feel about the writer for this one. Missing You is my least favorite drama ever. In fact, it was so comically awful , it ruined my experience of kdramas. Well I haven't watched any of her other dramas but I saw that Thundie gave Can you Hear My Heart a 10.

I love moon chae won and really like Kim kang woo but the other two?im really skeptical of how well they'll deliver their roles..song jae rim is not a good actor at all and Lee Jin wook is soo meh, but I suppose since his character is supposed to be noble and naive like the lead character from monte Cristo they chose him since he fits that image..I'm just not confident he'll be able to properly display the character's complexities well when he turns to vengance later on..and not really feeling him with moon chae won to be honest..I can come up with ten actors on top of my head who would be a better choice..LOL he must've begged the PD's to cast him in this to make up for the train wreck that was his last drama.

You must be sad because not your fave oppa casted in this drama, along with MCW who everyone worships here. Who do you want ? JIS , SJS, HB, KNG , who else ? It's not like your fave actor deserve anything good while others not. Why you don't make your own drama with all the casts you want ?

When I watched the headine, I was like "Kim Kang Woo? I've heard that name somewhere." Then JB pointed out that he was in Missing Noir M and it refreshed my memory on how I loved that drama so so so much I prayed for a season 2, and now I think I'm hooked to this drama because of him. I have nothing against LJW and MCW, Ilike them okay but KKW, I've watched only one drama of his and I'm officially rooting for him now. Good or evil characters, I'm just gonna root for him. Because he doesn't need a co-actor to have a chemistry have, he naturally has the chemistry with the screen. Lol. I sound like a fangirl, do I?

It's okay, every actor has their supporters and doubters, no matter how many. I, for one, have been a LJW fan for a while now, and yes, his last drama sucked, but what actor hasn't had a drama that sucked terribly? I'm a Joo Won fan, but will never finish Level 7. I love Hyun Bin, but Hyde was a snorefest. No actor can be solid in solid dramas all the time!

And the failure of TTWWNIL was the fault of the writers. I truly believe that.

I agree that that KKW has the acting chops to play both the lead(compared to LJW) and the villain but I think he'd be more fabulous if he plays the villain role.
Now..with LJW: Ugh! Where are all this hates coming from? I have to agree with one of the comments stating that maybe these haters are "some" MCW's fans who can't accept the fact that it's not their favorite oppa who'll play the main lead. Don't get me wrong, I love MCW, but sometimes her fans are too much. If MCW is such a great actress just like what her fans claim, she'll do great in this one no matter who her partner is.

Please do not make your own assumption that all this negativity came from us, MCW's fans and pointing finger on the fandom. From what I see, we, MCW's fans aren't reacted in such negative way although there are one or two who expressed their dissapointment earlier on but in polite way and have moved on from that. Most of the people who complains on this blog are kdrama fans, just like you who probably happened to like her and just expressed their opinions that annoyed others.. but I wouldn't call them her fans and attack the fandom.

I'd like to apologize if I offend you by the statement I made above, BUT what I said is not an assumption, it's a FACT. Most of the negative comments I've seen so far were uttered by fans of the said actress, and YES, I happened to know some of them. And I didn't say ALL of the MOONLIGHTS - this is how you call yourselves right?, I even quoted "SOME". This will be my last comment for this issue. If you're not one of them, you don't have to be guilty at all. I get the criticism but not the bashing. Hope you know the difference of the two.

I'm also apologized to you if my comment annoyed you.

But, can I ask this?

"Most of the negative comments I’ve seen so far were uttered by fans of the said actress, and YES, I happened to know some of them. And I didn’t say ALL of the MOONLIGHTS – this is how you call yourselves right?, I even quoted “SOME”. "

Where did you see that most of the comments came from moonlights? here? or anywhere else? could you please point it out? and you said that you know some of them, ok. But 'some' isn't equal to 'most negative comments'.. isn't? since there are tons of replies in blogs, twitter etc for the casting news and if most are from moonlights, then I wouldn't called it 'some'. And in my previous comment, I was referring to the people commenting here. And as you said that it is a fact, then can you point out who are those that are moonlights? real moonlights who sre following her and stan here instead of just a kdrama watchers who might happened to like her? I am asking since I am very familiar with the fandom and didn't see the bashing coming from the fandom (but of course, I wouldn't speak up about a few people who wrote in their personal SNS)

And no, of course I don't feel guilty since I never utter a single bad thing about the casting. However, I just feel the need to clarify with you about. moonlights being the major people who did the bashing because like I said, I didn't see it like the way you wrote.

And of course, I know the difference between bashing and criticism and again, I see no bashing from Moonlights in general that make it that most negativity came from our fandom.

It seems like you are just jumped into a conclusion and stereotypyed all the fans based on what a few people wrote.
