Goodbye, Goodbye Mr. Black
by girlfriday
Oh no, bad news in dramaland: We might not get to see the new revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black. The series was being planned for SBS’s winter Wednesday-Thursday timeslot following Village: Secret of Achiara (which follows Yong-pal), but now SBS has dropped the series from its lineup. The broadcaster is saying that Goodbye Mr. Black was never confirmed for that timeslot to begin with, but casting was well underway with the expectation that it would air on SBS in early December.
Representatives from both the drama’s production company Yigim Productions and SBS confirmed that the show has been dropped from that timeslot. Details remain vague on what the two parties disagreed on, but a representative from SBS stated, “The broadcaster and the production company had differing opinions on the direction of the production, and an agreement couldn’t be reached.” Yeah, that much we could deduce.
The drama is a manhwa adaptation that stars Lee Jin-wook as a man who is betrayed by his best friend and comes back to seek revenge. Moon Chae-won is the woman he fake-marries to create his cover identity, and Kim Kang-woo and Song Jae-rim were the latest supporting cast additions.
It makes me extra sad that a drama with a cast like that is having trouble getting on the air, and I’m dying to know what happened to suddenly make SBS drop it in the middle of casting and pre-production. It’s certainly possible that Goodbye Mr. Black will work things out with SBS for a later timeslot or move on to another network entirely, though hopefully it won’t be delayed so long that cast changes occur.
Goodbye Mr. Black, it’s not goodbye forever, right? We’ll see you someday?

That's harder to take than Kang Ji-hwan and Moon Geun-young's "Home Alone" since the casts are already confirmed. If they don't get a time slot soon some will move on to other projects.

I can take the others moving on, but the leads are the ones most in demand (and most in danger of moving on)
The best case is that we get an IHYV scenario where one network passed on the drama until it came to another and found success there (ironically, SBS).

Moon could easily get a drama or movie role. She would be the one I'd worry about dropping out the most.
MBC could use a good drama for wed/thurs slot. I hope they'll pick it up

If doesn't take ages for the production house can find another network, i think she will stick around. The. girl has tons of offers but she is known for being picky with the script and she has finally found a script and character that she's interest with.. I think she won't let it go that easily esp since she has been doing some research for the role.

pogo
September 25, 2015 at 10:08 AM
yeah, she is the biggest star in the mix, there is no way she isn't getting other offers.
I just hope it eventually sticks somewhere, and that she sticks with it. The other networks seem to be booked up till 2016, which makes it unlikely for now :(

I think SBS is trying to make excuses for over scheduling their wed/thurs slot. They can't stick it on mon/tues slot because Six Flying Dragons will run for 6 months at least.
Wed/thurs they currently have Yong-pal with 2 episodes extension. The Village will take over after that slot which was supposed to be for Mr Black.
I don't think they have a spot after the Village for Mr Black because Lee Young Ae's Saimdang is scheduled for the beginning of 2016 and that's priority since it's already sold to some overseas countries.
It doesn't sound good for Mr Black right now and we might end up saying goodbye to Mr Black unless some other network picks it up.

Probably the Production Team has asked for less PPL, no extensions, and/or "stick to the plot no matter what" liberties. But, for the Wed-Thu time slot, on SBS a.k.a "The King of What-You-See-Is-NOT-What-You-Get" channel??? Huuuhhh....I don't think so!
Poor actors! They have to choose between a butchered drama or no drama at all!

SBS currently become king of ratings for Mon-Tue and Wed-Thu. There's no way they wouldn't interfere the drama and not asking for more PPL. Even poor The Time We Sell Everything to Viewers that get low ratings also plagued by PPL.
So either SBS interfere with Goodbye Mr.Black production team that makes them say NO. Or really, there's more stories behind the scenes.

Well, in broad summary, it does sounds similar to nice guy but I don't think it is completely different. MCW has been excited for this drama and her role as it is a character that has the intensity that she always into and also some action scenes, so, she definitely see the big difference from her role in NG. But, well.. if this doesn't work then it tells us that it doesn't meant to be. And I wish all the cast good luck with their future projects :)

I agree. Let's not forget "Unkind Women". A women-centric drama with both kind and unkind ladies in the end. KBS has already suffered from the "ratings"-itis and they seem to have developed some sort of immunity. I was quite surprised, and I mean that in a good way, when IRY was not affected by low ratings as I thought it would have, given the one-digit numbers

I'm wondering if she will stick with this drama or drop it in favor of another project.
IF there is a chance for cable to pick it up then I would say stick with it. Other than that I'm sure there are enough offers for MCW and even though she is picky I'm sure there is a chance for her to find another interesting role soon. :)

Yaaaay!!! I love this news. This drama premise sounded so boring so I was actually in confusion whether to watch it or not. And I didn't really like the pairing, neither did I like that Song Jae Rim is only a side lead.
Now all three can choose different dramas. I want Moon Chae Won comeback to be in a super drama.
I bet my two cents this drama will fail if this airs.
Song Jae Rim needs to play a lead in tvN drama.
Lee Jin Wook needs to take a break for a while so that we can shake off his previous character from our mind. I don't like it when actors choose next projects too soon. That's why I didn't watch Jang Nara's Mr. Back because she did it toooo soon after FTLY.

Always thought SBS was the arrogant kid on the block who thought they were so cool and everyone just loved them. Any signs of success goes right to their head and makes them end up looking like fools in the end - at least to me. Poet me play devils advocate for a bit and say that SBS prob has a darn good reason for dropping it?
If SBS thought that this drama was going to be a ratings hit in way would they have dropped it.
Also just cause a drama comes from a well liked source material and has a star studded cast doesn't automatically make it good. A lot of it entails on direction and writing. Case and point: The time we loved.

You are probably right but it's always easier to blame the broadcasting station for everything hehe.
Kind of weird to give the Village the time slot when Mr Black was originally going to take over after Yong-pal.
Lee Chang-Min directed dramas for SBS his whole career including the successful hit drama "Giant" so maybe it's the script? number of episodes?

This sounds a little fishy. I have a sneaking suspicion some bigger star agreed to different project so SBS is pushing Mr Black out of the way to make room in the schedule for the other drama. If they didn't have another drama arranged, I doubt they'd drop this one so readily since they'd have no time and would have to rush to find another one.
