Girl’s Day’s Minah cast in MBC’s Sweet Family

Now that Sweet Family has secured all the parents, it’s time to start casting their kids. MBC’s drama adaptation of the gangster comedy franchise Marrying the Mafia has confirmed that idol singer Minah of Girl’s Day has been cast as the daughter to Jung Woong-in (Yong-pal) and Yoo Sun (Horse Doctor). Ah, she must be the girl who has the Romeo-and-Juliet teenage romance with the main family’s son.

The family comedy stars Jung Jun-ho (Mama) as a man with two very different lives: Out of the house, he’s a scary mob boss, but at home he’s just a dad who gets no respect and gets squarely ignored by his very capable wife Moon Jung-hee (Mama) and his two sons. The story is about his attempt to become a good father while trying to leave his life of crime behind.

Jung Woong-in plays his rival, the head of a construction company within their crime organization. Minah has been cast as his teenage daughter, an idol trainee in high school. The only other thing I’ve seen Minah in is the wacky cable sitcom Vampire Idol, in which she also played an idol trainee. I suppose it’s the safe thing to cast an idol to play, if you must cast one.

Her character is well-rounded and curious, and she resembles her mom in being very frank, bold, and straightforward. In early stories about the show, they said there’d be a loveline between the two rival families’ teenage kids, which should be a fun headache for the parents. I can’t really take Minah seriously as an actress, but I can at least see her being cute in a fluffy heartwarming family comedy.

Sweet Family follows She Was Pretty on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November.

Actually, you have seen her in more than just Vampire Idol, gf - she was the queen bee of the high school mean girls in episode 2 of Master's Sun!

It was only a cameo, but I didn't even recognise her as the same girl who was the dopey one in Vampire Idol. She's good in my books - at least worth a try.

Your comments are always so level-headed and tolerant of new actresses - unlike the usual flower boy squee brigade acting as if you don't have any business being a female in the industry unless you're one of a small number of non-threatening faves. Keep on rocking, pogo!

that's really kind of you, Annie, but I honestly don't see how I'm any different from any other commenter here - I don't mince my words about actors of either gender if I've seen their acting and it's turned out repeatedly substandard. I'll give anyone a chance or two, but not endless chances.

Personally, I'm really happy that 2015 has finally given us a few more more rookie/young actresses breaking into younger lead roles and not being locked out by idols. Though it's a shame that Kang Sora and Lee Yubi's dramas thoroughly wasted their talent, at least it was a step forward.

(but please god I hope this role doesn't involve too much overt aegyo. I'm not ready for another young actress with some potential - that she's actually shown in a performance, however short - to end up completely butchered because kdrama writers do not know how to write a heroine)

also, this is a k-movie-to-drama adaptation......I am not optimistic about it (see: Jeon Woo-chi and Level 7 Civil Servant)

I didn't mind Jeon Woochi, it was a wacky and fun ride to the end. I support the whole 'too much aegyo is gross' opinion, though, even though I haven't seen her act.

Why are dads always portrayed as unfeeling morons in popular culture?

Your guess is as good as mine :/

Though no kdrama has even touched the peak of messiness that was Twilight (where the girl's father actually congratulates a guy for force-kissing her. There is not enough wtf for that)

I agree, and often in kdrama they're not just deadbeats but actually cause harm to their children's lives. :(

Two memorable and lovely dads though: the dads in Who Are You (the older one with Yoon Kye-sang) and Can You Hear My Heart. The latter one especially just killed me in the best way.

I thought I watched one of the movies, but Unstoppable Marriage is not Unstoppable Family. Ehhhh.

Aww, I like Minah a lot, and think so far she's shown more potential for acting than Hyeri ever has (Answer Me 1988 might change this though).
Thanks for the news!

I don't know much about her acting but I saw her in 2D1N as a guest and she was really cool! I loved how chill she was even though Park Bo Young and Moon Geun Young stole a lot of the guys attention.
