Assembling the rescue squad for D-Day

There isn’t much in the way of plot or character information that I can add for JTBC’s disaster-action-thriller drama D-Day, since we’ve already outlined the crucial points: Yup, still about an earthquake that hits Seoul, and yup, still about the emergency medics who are mobilized in the aftermath.

So maybe these promo posters and stills will have to do the talking — and with so much action and drama going on in the show, at least there’s a lot to see, starting with the four main characters pictured in the poster above. Main lead Kim Young-kwang plays a surgeon who puts his patients’ lives before all else, and Jung So-min is a surgical resident who makes her very first trip to Seoul and is immediately caught up in mass disaster, making for “the most harrowing day of her life.” Yeah, I’ll say.

Ha Suk-jin takes on the role of a cold, ambitious surgeon who’s an expert on advanced robotic surgery technology and has no patience for mistakes, while Yoon Joo-hee plays a skilled emergency room nurse whose medical abilities rival a resident, sometimes making more accurate diagnoses than the doctors.

D-Day is aiming to be largely pre-produced, and has already filmed up to Episode 14, which means that it’ll be able to avoid the frantic pace of live-shot dramas. That extra time is a double-edged sword, though, since we’ve seen a lot of pre-produced dramas fail to resonate with viewers; at that point it’s difficult to make tweaks or steer things in a new direction, which is why most dramas still stick stubbornly to the mad dash of the live-shoot.

That said, I’m particularly looking forward to checking out this show because I’m in the mood for something a little different; I feel like we haven’t had a lot of excitement in dramaland in months, and would love for the fresh cycle to stir a little more interest. And if not, well, I guess there’s always next cycle. The drama addict’s perpetual credo.

D-Day premieres on September 18, airing as a Friday-Saturday drama following Last.

Kdramas still be using the wrist grab in any situation. Anyhow hopefully this is good.

I wonder if people really grabs wrists in real life in Korea.

I just don't seen why in that poster he couldn't grab her hand. It just looks so abnormal to grab someone's wrist – but maybe that's what Korean people actually do. Like, no one grabs hands, but everyone grabs wrists. Can anyone confirm?

In this case it doesn't bother me. Two hands is something that's easier to break apart than someone's firm hold on another person's upper arm. It's more stable and isn't as "weak". In a situation like the above, in context, it seems fine. It's worth getting annoyed by wrist grabs-and I'd be the first, believe me-but I have no qualms with its use here.

Not korean but i do... With people who are friends. It's kinda awkward to hold hands with everyone, but we like sticking together. So we either link arms or hold on to wrists or forearms

umm earthquakes ? will the land split here and lava will come out? or a deep black hole will appear or will it just consist of shaking? because if their special effects is only shaking they need to really start to feel nervous ....and the charcters are all doctors ... uh huh yong pal what have you done they think doctors are a trend now urgh!

Even though Yong-Pal aired before, this show actually started filming BEFORE Yong-Pal. This drama has been filming for a couple months now because of how much is involved.

Jung So Min's a good actress, too bad I don't care much for this lead. Never liked him in any of his stuff

This looks good. Very cinematic. I hope it doesn't get too bogged down in medical jargon and forget that their doctors are not just doctors but also humans, lol.

Anyway, I want to watch this. Hopefully it can get subbed.

Hopefully being mostly pre-shot, this show can avoid some of the common plot holes and bloopers. I still have doubts about the basic premise, and the focus on genius medical folks, but will give it a shot.

I hope this one turns out decent. Jung So-min's still pretty even with messed-up hair and grit in her face...

And as for the wrist-grab in the poster, I'd say running away from something that might kill you is the ONE circumstance where I give it a pass.

i'm korean. actually. In Korea, in-the-field, many korean people don’t understand Kim Youngkwang is main role. Most of korean People think Ha Seokjin takes main role(first lead) in this drama. KYK is famous for awkward acting and uninspired performance. Foreigner don't know the fact. cause they watch drama with subtitles or dubbing.

Hmm, well I mean...subtitles don't really prevent you from seeing how someone performs. Other things might get lost...like pronunciation and things like that but I'm sure people can pick up on [what they think is] a bad performance or a good performance. I think the guy is a natural and comes off very likable and human on screen, but I'm sure others think otherwise. I also don't think having a main role is very important much of the time. Plenty of secondary characters have out-shined first leads in dramas.

To be honest, for me, I like actors who make me feel something. They don't have to be ~*~amazing~*~ but if there is something I like, I'll follow their work.

Although I'm not into this genre of dramas I'm really pysched because Kim Jung hwa is here! I kind of miss seeing her face in dramas nowadays. I don't know what happen but she's not getting lead roles anymore. Is she a bad actress? I liked her in most of her dramas particularly Snow White or Taste sweet love with Lee Wan (who is also MIA nowadays). I hope she gets a better role next time. Oh and more JUNG SO MIN!!!

I'm just really happy to see Jung So min and Ha Suk Jin in a drama. It seems quiet different from what I'm used to in Kdrama land so I hope it does well.

Is it me or does the first poster with the doctors purposefully looking at the camera look kind of silly and unnatural? A poster with the doctors in character, going about their business, looking panicky and stricken would have been better...methinks.

Hmm not a fan of disaster dramas or medical ones for that matter.. But I might check this out to see JSM and KYK reunited.

Though I still wish they were in a rom-com instead!

They filmed 14 episodes already? Well, if that's the case I reeeeaaaallllyyyy hope that it will be able to keep us at the edges of our seats with each episode.

I have faith in D-Day because even though this is a SM C&C drama they seem to be taking everything seriously, which I think necessary for every drama, but especially for a blockbuster disaster drama like this.

As for the actors, I have no doubts whatsoever. I trust Kim Youngkwang and Jung Somin; I've seen them enough to know that they'll be amazing (unless the writing really sucks). The others seem promising too, probably Sungyeol will be the only one 'lacking' (but give a boy a chance!)

Yay! Tomorrow is 18th! Getting ready to watch this drama . Since Lee Seong Yeol is in it,I'll give it a pass but I don't like kim young kwang but I'll still try hard to see this drama.
And I hope their special effects are creative. Not just some camera shaking and then BAM! That's their earthquake.
