Song Hye-gyo and Song Joong-ki on the set of Descended From the Sun

This show has been pretty stingy with the stills, but here’s a peek at Song Hye-gyo (That Winter, the Wind Blows) and Song Joong-ki (Nice Guy) on the set of their new drama Descended From the Sun, the blockbuster human melodrama from hit writer Kim Eun-sook (Heirs, Gentleman’s Dignity, Secret Garden) and the PD of Secret. The KBS drama is planning to be 100% pre-produced and is aiming for a fall broadcast, though the time slot still hasn’t been officially fixed.

The healing romance drama is about a soldier and a surgeon who meet on the front lines in a war-torn country and fall in love. Song Joong-ki plays an elite special forces officer who meets Song Hye-gyo, a charismatic army surgeon, on the battlefield. Kim Ji-won (Gap-dong) and Jin Gu (Falling for Innocence) play another surgeon-soldier pair in a secondary romance.

The stills include shots of the lead couple on set, as well as a cameo from Song Joong-ki’s bestie Lee Kwang-soo (Running Man), who dropped by to shoot a scene as a part-time worker at a carnival game.

The war-torn romance takes place in a fictional country, and the drama is about young people chasing their dreams and finding love while serving overseas in extreme circumstances. Though the blockbuster war action scenes will set it apart, I fully expect it to be a romance first and foremost. Here’s hoping that Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo have some chemistry to make it work.

Descended From the Sun is tentatively slated to follow Strange Daughter-in-Law on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in late September.

This is probably the easiest role for SJK... because he is playing a soldier. :) Looking forward to this drama! Although I'm not sure if it can be any good.

Dear Lord, the pretty is almost TOO MUCH. I think they are both one of the most beautiful Korean actors/actresses, both of them on screen at once is kinda shocking *_*

The very first korean drama I ever watched was All In and I stuck with it because Song Hye Kyo had me glued to the screen. She single-handedly got me into Kdramas because I watched Full House after that which lead me to watching other Kdrama rom-coms like Coffee Prince.

SHK's prettiness is just out-of-the-world. While SJK looks manly but still so pretty too..

I'm not shocked at all... haha. SHK is always paired with handsome leading men. It's just by default, it seems! Directors/cast-ers/etc just naturally need to pair pretty with pretty.

It literally makes no sense because every South Korean man needs to join the army... so the actor can look like anything and still fit the part. But people are stuck in their old ~guys need to look macho or they can't be heroes~ outdated mindset lol, it's pathetic.

I like that it's pre-produced--no live-shoot drama or pandering to the audience. Most pre-produced dramas I've seen have been really good....but the writer....hopefully the absence of a live-shoot will produce more fully realized characters.

Required fields are marked *

I think it's great for the casts and staff but it doesn't make much of a difference when it comes to quality . Road # 1 was pre-produced and hyped to the max. Comrades out of nowhere beat it in quality and ratings.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Of course guaranteed quality doesn't exist, but I can always put faith in a show that's completely finished and trusts the story it'll tell over a show with four episodes written and a real-time audience to battle. I respect that commitment. The Producers, for example, experimented with the faux documentary style, but abandoned it for the audience, which disappointed some viewers.

This isn't to slam live-shoot dramas (which I have nothing against). I'll take dramas in all forms.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It doesn't guarantee quality but there's definitely a much better chance at overall coherence & consistency both in the narrative and with the characters.

That's what I have concluded from watching both Japanese (all pre-produced) and Korean dramas (mostly live-shoot).

Though, unlike tapioca pearl, I will slam live-shoot – because I think drama production staff and actors deserve healthier work conditions than live-shoots allow.

You think preproduction will stop Kim Eun-sook from pandering? O ye of little faith. She knows what sells--I mean, she's made a successful career out of the same kind of PPL trojan horse with maximum manipulation and minimum structure for like 10 years. Nothing will change here.

Looks like she is co-writing with the co-writer of Friend, Our Legend, which was one of the aforementioned pre-produced shows I enjoyed. That gives me some hope.

Required fields are marked *

Friend, Our Legend was great. Maybe if the co-writer does 80%...the problem is KES is such a big name, and usually brings in the ratings. At this point, no one is going to put her in a corner. Here's to hoping, though. I'm gonna end up watching this for SJK anyway, so if I don't spork my eyes out it'll be a victory.

So much talent and so much pretty....wasted on Kim Eun-sook. I can see it now: she'll turn Song Joong-ki into one of her trademark stalker creeps, and Song Hye-kyo will spend half the drama crying her eyes out because love hurts when you're dating a psycho. That description is just so Kdrama. They date...on the battlefield! The whole (huge) budget will be blown on window dressing for the usual love story...except this time we'll get awkward foreign language scenes as a bonus, and probably poorly researched, emotionally manipulative war victim B plots as well. I just wish SJK had picked something more interesting as a comeback project, but I guess he has to balance quality with mainstream projects.

Unfortunately this writer is an immediate turn-off for me. She gets the ratings, but her dramas are just not my cup of tea. I only made it through Secret Garden because it was in my early drama days, and I yet remember so vividly watching and already thinking "This dialogue is so nonsensical".

Don't care too much about writer, director or the actors listed. But "100% preproduced" sounds great, considering that about >80% of the good shows really suffer from not being preproduced. It's no guarantee by any means, but eliminating the factor that is almost certain to ruin a potentially good show is a very good headstart.

I read somewhere that the story is originally written by the co-writer, not KES. Hopefully she doesn't change it into her usual cheesy cringey kind of romance. And I pray hard for Joong Ki's character not to be a creep and a jerk because i don't wanna lose my huge affection for him. Oh, and he looks so manly and hot. Woah.

His character was an awful person in Nice Guy, and we all lived through that one. But at least the character was well-written and interesting. Kim Eun-sook male leads are always one-note--they're nasty, creepy jerks. The end.

I just hope he's able to turn the character around with his performance. He's gone pretty far before. Look at Sungkyunkwan Scandal--he made Goo Yong-ha the definition of fabulous with practically zero attention from the writer.
