SBS to follow Yong-pal with corpse mystery thriller Village
by girlfriday
SBS has announced their next Wednesday-Thursday drama to follow Joo-won and Kim Tae-hee’s Yong-pal: It’s called Village, and is described as a “corpse-chasing thriller” that unpacks a mystery that begins with the discovery of a dead body in a sleepy little village. Okay, that description already kind of spooks me out, mostly because my imagination is picturing something akin to the horror movie Guest. Don’t people know never to enter secluded little towns in scary movies?
The series comes from PD Lee Yong-seok of fusion historical dramas The Great Seer and Iljimae (the 2008 Lee Jun-ki version), and writing is Do Hyun-jung of Que Sera Sera and Can Love Become Money. It’ll be a genre switch for both of them, but I’m curious to see something new from the writer of Que Sera Sera, which featured complex characters and adult themes.
The mystery takes place in a peaceful village where there’s hardly any crime — one day a dead body that was buried in secret is uncovered, opening up a case that “destroys everyday life” for the villagers. The problem is, there are no missing people in this village, so the case is all about figuring out who died, why no one was looking for this person and why they weren’t discovered until now, and whether it was murder, suicide, or an accident.
The discovery of the body leads to an investigation into the lives of the people connected to the victim, through which we’ll find that this village and its secrets aren’t all that ordinary. I wonder if they might be going for a Twin Peaks setup, which would be very cool.
The main characters will be: a 26-year-old female English teacher, a 28-year-old female art academy teacher, a 28-year-old male policeman, and a 32-year-old male art teacher. Casting will begin this week, and the drama plans to start shooting in late August.
Village is being planned as a 16-episode series, to follow Yong-pal on Wednesdays and Thursdays in October.

Remembering the Big Scenes in episode 9 of QSS. It was like shock after shock only in the few minutes. hopefully, the writer would give us another different story from his/her hand.

This sounds more like a drama that would do well in cable. The Big Three still cater mainly to a romance-loving audience. Disappearing unknowns and creepy villages don't sound like something which has a chance to remain untainted in these stations.
I'll check it out due to the cool premise, but I don't have much hope for a truly dark and mysterious work.

I still couldn't believe the korean audiences prefer High Society over I Remember You. I guess you're right, romance-loving audience still rules.

And I got all excited thinking that maybe they would reunite Eric and Yumi who were so good together in both of their dramas as a couple! Please make this happen, drama gods!

I'm currently on a crime/mystery kick, so this sounds good.
For some reason it made me think of the "Countrycide" episode of Torchwood.

Village certainly has the potential to make for some interesting television. My interest definitely piqued once you mentioned Do Hyun-jung is the writer. Que Sera Sera (a rarity to find such a twisted kdrama like that nowadays) left an indelible impression of unforgettable scenes and memories. And as a kdrama newbie, I watched Can Love Become Money and recall enjoying it a lot. (It was my first time seeing Yeon Jung-hoon.)
Reading this portion of the premise, "The mystery takes place in a peaceful village where there’s hardly any crime — one day a dead body that was buried in secret is uncovered, opening up a case that “destroys everyday life” for the villagers." reminded me of The Casual Vacancy by Robert Galbraith (pseudonym for J.K. Rowling) initially.
Casting...I'd love to see Eric on screen again too. He has a presence that just captures your attention and leaves you with so much to remember. In Que Sera Sera and Discovery of Love, he portrayed his characters with a strong sense of pride, passion, and emotional vulnerability that was hard to forget.
All one can do is hope for great casting; that the narrative is logical and tightly plotted; and that the writer's vision and the director's interpretation & execution is allowed to thrive without tremendous amounts of unnecessary interference from the network & sponsors.

Sigh, I love Que Sera Sera. A friend recommended that drama to me, I watched it many months later and am eternally grateful lol.
However, i only remember watching one episode of Can Love Become Money so hmmm. Maybe the writer is better at the darker themes (though I don't know how CLBM turned out).
