SBS murder-mystery-thriller Village casts Shin Eun-kyung
by javabeans
SBS’s upcoming Village has me intrigued, so I’ll be watching developments closely on the drama, which is about a peaceful village that’s rocked by the sudden discovery of an unidentified corpse. Shin Eun-kyung has signed on to be a lead, which is great since she’s awesome and I love her; she has a ton of dramas under her belt (Family Secret, My Neighbor’s Wife, Scandal, Flames of Ambition), though perhaps you’ll recognize her most recently as Jo Jung-seok’s cutely interfering mother in Oh My Ghostess.
The village is described as very peaceful with hardly any crime, which is why it’s so shocking when a long-buried corpse comes to light. There have been no disappearances within the village, and nobody’s looking for the body, so questions of its origins and cause of death swirl as the case unfolds and people hunt for answers. They’ll find that the village isn’t quite as ordinary as it appears, though we’re left to guess at the nature of its mystery. Creepy, but in a good way!
Shin Eun-kyung’s character is the director of an art gallery and also a glass artist, whose elegant and refined appearance contrasts with her dirt-poor background, growing up in difficult straits with a single mother. She married the richest man in her village and became something of a modern-day Cinderella, though I think it’s safe to say we shouldn’t expect any fairy tales. At least not any of the happy Disneyfied ones.
Village is being prepared as a Wednesday-Thursday drama to follow Yong-pal. The series comes from PD Lee Yong-seok of Iljimae (the 2008 series) and The Great Seer and writer Do Hyun-jung of Que Sera Sera and Can Love Become Money, and will premiere in October.

they look similar for those don't see both often.
I think Shin Eun Kyung wiped out Go Hyun Jung as Mishil. I watched Flame of Ambition 1st, she just walk through the fire, smack my screen from day 1 to end of ep.
Then watch Mishil, but tbh, I dont shiver as like watching SEK on screen. Just 2cents!

I'm familiar with Go Hyun-jung's work more than Shin Eun Kyung. I'm pretty sure Flame of Ambition had the better writer but I haven't seen much of Shin's work to make a fair comparison.
Mishil stood out because of Go Hyun-jung's portrayal. She was offered the role of the queen but she picked Mishil instead. If Lee Yo Won were to play Mishil, it wouldn't be the same.

Give. Me. Make this a proper thriller, please. Don't mess up on the mystery plot and drown it in opparodoration like in 'God's Gift'. I wish this were on cable and maybe pre-produced or largely pre-produced, but let's see what happens. My worries might be proven wrong.

Right? In the right hands this could be fantastic – if it's someone who plans all out, doesn't throw in any of the usual stuff (love rivals, chaebols, etc.) and makes it properly smart.
I would like this in the hands of a movie maker more so than a drama director. Or if it were a Japanese drama. Not because those are necessarily better, but because they are pre-produced and more willing to take risk to do something unique and properly thriller without the usual elements.
The fact that this airs after Yong-pal means there's not much time left for it....

Yes, it's only wise to be cautious with one's hopes seeing how the Big Three usually treat fresh concepts. And complex mysteries. I think that the filming system makes such a story nearly impossible to do well, so we'll need the writer to be majorly talented in writing complex concepts "live". Even then, it won't be as good as it could have with thorough planning, but if we can at least avoid the major issues such shows usually have, we're good. It's still an interesting dark concept, so I hope they can deliver.

Japanese dramas use the same live shoot method that Korean dramas do, afaik. The only difference is that Japanese shows air only one episode a week and less episodes overall, which helps make them seem more consistent.
I do agree that this would make a better jdrama, they tackle this genre better imo.

Let's all wish for an appropriate ending to the mystery plot at the very least - SBS refused poor "God's Gift" and the drama's PD 3 freackish minutes to deliver the epic finale they had in mind for such an overwhelming story ( we definitely needed to watch Dr. Stranger's trailer and a few commercials, right? :-( ).

I'm so happy that Shim Eun-kyung got to be a lead character again, and i think she's better at dark stories than comedy (exception for "Bad Couple" she was hilarious in it).

Yay, Shin Eun-kyung! I've loved her ever since watching her in the movie Perfect Match. Glad to see she's still getting lead roles because she deserves them.
I would also love to see her as the lead in something lighter, like Oh My Ghostess because she's great at comedy.

Meh. She's actually one of the few actors I dislike in Oh my ghostess, though she's become bearable now even though she tends to over act in the scenes she's in, which is better than when she gave a soliloquy which sounded like she was reading from a teleprompter.
Hope she's better in this role, but I won't be tuning in for her.

Shin Eun-kyung played Jo Jung-seok mom??
Unbelievable , she (born in 1973) is only 8 years older than JJS (born in 1980). She played his mother????? Wow, Okaaaayyy!!

It is a common practice in kdramas. I was surprised when Go Kyung Jung played the mother of Bidam (Kim Nam Gil) in Queen Seondeok. She looked so young on screen. 10 years difference. How about the actress Oh Young Su who played the mother of Jumong (Song Il kook). They have the same age. These are just a few examples.

She was amazing as the main character, and Seo Woo's mom, ("Can you just die for me?"....what a line). Such a good job. At the time, I though of her as the Erica Kane of Kdrama. Good to hear she's getting more good work after Ghostess.
