Nam Joo-hyuk offered new MBC drama Dazzling Temptation

Nam Joo-hyuk sure is in high demand these days — he’s set to follow up high school drama Who Are You—School 2015 with college campus drama Cheese in the Trap on tvN, but since that show has been delayed until January 2016, he’s planning to fill his time with MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Dazzling Temptation this fall. Nam is currently considering an offer to play the childhood counterpart to the hero, which would mean he’d headline the first 10 episodes of the 50-episode series.

The drama comes from writer Sohn Young-ok (Gold Rainbow, May Queen) and PD Kim Sang-hyub (Mama, Level 7 Civil Servant), and initially courted Choi Kang-hee (Heart to Heart, Level 7 Civil Servant) to headline, but she passed on the offer as soon as the stories came out. Despite what you’d expect from the length, it’s a contemporary drama about two women and their intertwined fates, their jealousy, ambition, and of course the man they love.

The story centers around two women who are old high school classmates, who somehow end up stepmom and daughter… which I guess is possible if one of them marries a much much older man? Crazy. (Not to mention totally awkward.) The drama will follow their stormy lives and the family conflict that’s sure to rise between them.

Nam Joo-hyuk has been cast to play the leading man in the extended backstory that’ll span the first 10 episodes (much like May Queen and Gold Rainbow had). His character’s father is an assemblyman who undergoes public prosecution, and as a result, the hero grows up under someone else’s protection. He’s an all-around athlete and lightning quick on the uptake, and has a calculated wit on top of being handsome.

Some of the plot descriptions include a revenge story for the leading man, which puts the show pretty firmly in melodrama territory, especially in light of the writer’s past dramas. (The less said about Level 7 Civil Servant’s directing, the better.) I actually like the idea of Nam Joo-hyuk building up some acting experience with smaller roles like this one, and sort of wish I could rewind the clock to put his leading roles later on the timeline.

Dazzling Temptation follows Hwajeong on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in October.

He can't act to save his life. Terrible choice.

I totally agree. This guy is stonefaced!
And being put against Yook Sung-Jae just highlighted his lack of skills.

He's doing well these days. He was already popular before, but WAY really did a lot for him despite everything. This drama just sounds like the most boring thing ever though. But I'm sure it'll be good experience.

50-ep dramas are not my thing but even less so when the people behind it are connected to May Queen and Level 7 Civil Servant.

I know someone in real life who went through this. A girl married the dad of her former classmate (who's also a guy).

It's good to beef up his resume with smaller roles. Maybe I'll just catch the first 10 eps. LOL

Ji Soo is doing just fine, he is currently filming a movie.

This guy is cute, but some actors are just lucky.

Nam Joo Hyuk was a popular model under K Plus, which merged with YG Entertainment (now housing big name actors like Cha Seung Won). I think having an existing fan base plus a big company backing him probably helps

This writer/PD combination sounds like makjang central but at least it's not a lead role and thank god for that because his acting is just not up to scratch. He's good at playing cute, as seen in Surplus Princess, but not much else. And I hope this means his Cheese in the Trap role is a really small one.

and yeah, I'm with bbstl - why is this kid booking so much work and why are we not hearing more about Ji Soo?! Unless it's because he is hard at work on the inevitable flood of roles his performance in Angry Mom should have got him offers for.

This drama sounds like the most boring drama and I can already see it full of cliche plots.

But its good that NJH will build up some resume before Cheese in the trap, becaue CITT is the drama everyone will have their eyes on like a hawk.

IKR? Ji Soo deserves to have more project than him. I mean, I do like him, esp. at Surpluss Princess. But boy, he needs to improve his acting if he wants us to be giddy at hearing him headline dramas again and not just like, Hul.

He's adorable so I'm super happy he's getting a lot of important supporting roles. When he improves, he can take on leads again!

Not sure about the drama though. So makjang even on paper, it's probably gonna be cringeworthy on screen. But maybe I'll tune in for the first 10 episodes.

honestly, I think any potential improvement in his acting is more of an "if" question than a "when". And a ten-episode stretch is no small thing, that's most of the length of a miniseries. I have no idea if he can carry that.

Right now, he's adorable but not much else - the acting equivalent of a fizzy soft drink that goes flat really fast and leaves you tasting nothing but warm sugar water (ugh).

The importance of good management! They get you things. I say go for it; a childhood role is great for an up and comer. This is a case where back-pedaling is great. Back-pedal away.

He is good-looking but in no way deserving of being included in the next generation of potential leading men candidates.

The young girl he starred with in two music videos (I believe she's part of Akdong Musician) appears like a far more natural actress in the making than he does.

He's a good looking kid. I don't blame them for casting him. He doesn't seem to be a natural at acting but he's young so he can improve.

Oh god, what is with all the hate? He got the lead role in WAY and everyone complained, so he's taking somewhat minor roles now and people are still complaining. How is he meant to improve if people like you don't give him a chance to? Is not like he can improve by disappearing, he needs to be actively working and getting feedback.

Jisoo, Sungjae and others - they have other projects on (Jisoo is filming a movie /Sungae on WGM) and if their companies aren't actively looking for new dramas/films for them how is that Nam Joo Hyuk's fault?

I'm glad NJH's getting more offers and I'm looking forward to seeing him get better and better.

Yes haters should stop. Yook Sung Jae didnt do it for me in School 2015. We arent complaining about him much. Nam Joo Hyuk was fine in School 2015. That is why he is getting role offers. Jisoo was good in Angry mom. But Nam Joo Hyuk didnt his role or something eh? Stop...
Is there a need to talk about Jisoo in Nam Joohyuk's news here? Pathethic...

Word. I understand when he didn't deliver for his first leading role but now that he's taking minor role to improve himself, people are still at it. Give the kid a break! As if you guys are any better than him when you first started at whatever occupation you're doing.

At least he's working hard to improve himself, what more do you guys want from him??? My goodness!

Totally agree. I am not his fan or anything but I am happy that he got casted in this and CITT, every actor started somewhere and need roles to improve. Give him a chance. Yes he wasn't phenomenal in School 2015, but he was still fine, there are "top stars" out there who do worst.
Your favorites actors can't take every role in every drama you like.
There is always so much hate these days : when rumors of an idol getting a role -> why do they cast idols? They should let rookie actors take the roles! When a rookie actor gets casted -> why him? I want "ABC".
If during the drama he is bad then go ahead, express your hate and anger but at the news of a casting its just childish.

I'm not a fan of his acting (if you can call it acting) & I really do feel like he's expressionless at times but it's great that he get job offers. Take this opportunity to prove the haters that you can actually act so that people would stop comparing you to Sungjae. People will talk, I mean that's the point of having a mouth, so deliver a good performance & shut them up.

Is there a shortage of Rookie actors in Korea that all of a sudden we need to see this guy everywhere? Please - let both him and us rest and cast someone else instead.

his acting sucking and showing to be generally unfit for roles with any significant length has nothing to do with Yook Sung-jae

(and btw dramabeans commenters in general do not tolerate idol actor substandard acting or their 'fanbots' so there goes your theory. Though there always seem to be a few fanbots on hand to defend people who don't come up to scratch in their roles, idol or not......like seriously, this guy's face is enough to book him work that could be going to a better actor?)

Good for him! I seriously feel bad for YSJ future co stars, despite not being that amazing an actor he's got some really obsessive fans. Everyone's being so hard on Nam Joo Hyuk when they don't consider the fact that if you pitted Yook Sunjae against a real actor like Ji Soo, he'd seem like a crapfest actor if you get right down to it.

YSJ may not be an amazing actor, but he's decent enough. And did pretty well in the roles he was given. At least he started with smaller roles and climbed up to where he's now, not with leading roles. I watched him first in School without even knowing he's an idol. He and NJH are naturally compared a lot because they were co-stars and he outshined a so-called leading guy. He had many scenes with veteran actors in School 2015, like Lee Pil Mo and Jun Noh Min (his father), he didn't seem awkward at all even in those scenes. He has the potential to improve and I'm sure he's self-aware enough to choose the right roles. I'll be happy if he works with Ji Soo or other good "real" actors from whom he can learn a lot.

But Nam Joo Hyuk is just like a stick in School. A good looking stick nevertheless. Hope he could improve later on. Meanwhile i'm not sure if Sungjae is that good but i felt warm looking at him. Hopefully he'll get more good roles that will fit him well like school's.

Ah, so this is a case of - he was a fine actor until he worked opposite an idol and all of a sudden he couldn't 'act' anymore. I was wondering why this rookie was getting so much buzz. Hope he stays away from shows with kpop stars and their fans, poor guy

But I think without Sungjae school 2015 will be even worse. Maybe the psychopath will be the audience favourite then. I mean, for dozens of episodes Eunbi was so meek I have no interest in her at all.
