Kim Yoo-jung considers high school drama Cheer Up
by javabeans
Ah, here’s a reason to keep an eye out for KBS’s upcoming high school cheerleading drama Cheer Up: The show is in talks to cast Kim Yoo-jung for the lead role, which would take her back to high school after playing a bullied student in her last drama, Angry Mom. She’s reportedly received the offer but hasn’t decided yet, etc., you know the drill.
The character Kim Yoo-jung would play is a popular second-year student at a prestigious high school. She’s head cheerleader with a sparkling personality and lots of friends, but her poor grades are her big weakness, making her feel intimidated in the grades- and test-driven cutthroat world of high school.
The central plot point of Cheer Up occurs when two school clubs are merged, but it sounds as the show is really about exploring the trials and friendships of young students in a heartwarming way, much like the School franchise did. Set in a highly competitive school that emphasizes achievement and scores above all else, the drama will lay bare the absurdities and hypocrisies of the education system while also featuring the growth stories of the students who struggle to move forward, one step at a time.
The drama will be directed by PD Lee Eun-jin (Trot Lovers, Anticipate Love) and written by Yoon Soo-jung of King’s Face and Mandate of Heaven. Producing is Contents K of School 2013. Cheer Up will be a 16-episode drama to air on Mondays and Tuesdays on KBS, beginning in September.

This will probably be more in line with the school franchise than the actual School 2015. The latter wasn't bad per se but it certainly didn't have the realistic, slice-of-life feel the other installements had.
Anywa, this sounds promising so it's good news.

As much as I like Kim Yoo Jung, I'd really hope she won't take this drama. I wish the directors would picked another child actress to play this.

Kim Yoo Jung as a cheerleader? Awesome! After the last few school dramas, I was beginning to wonder if Korean high schools had anything going on except bullying, tests,
music, and makjang.

Dear PD, please get male actors that at least 4 years older or less than her not more than that.
Can't wait to see how cheer leader in Korea. I've never seen it in k-drama.

Not much luck on that front for either her or Kim So-hyun, I'm afraid - KSH is working with '93-er D.O. and her most age-appropriate recent pairing was with Yook Sung-jae in School 2015 (4 years older). And Kim Yoo-jung's last pairing was with Baro (8 years older than her.....at 15).

Isn't this the drama that was considering Lee Hyun Woo? I like Kim Yoo Jung but she is too young and I can't see the ship happening. (Sole reason why I didn't even watch School 2015)
And I feel like KYJ and KSH will always be compared after this. Since both will have done similar School-series-esque dramas.
And since this drama is following 'Eccentric daughter in law' it means the pilot episode will be on 29th September.

Angry Mom paired her with Baro who is a full two years older than Lee Hyun-woo and looked it with his styling in that drama. Lee Min-ho '93, her second lead in Moon/Sun, is the same age as LHW, as is Ji Soo. Just saying.
Anyway I don't think Lee Hyun-woo is being sought for this project, KBS wants him for their other insanely ambitious-sounding high school drama that's set to air in 2016.

There's only 3 child actresses in her age group whom I recognise. And she is going to be the head cheerleader. If I remember right the couple of others whom I remember besides those 3 don't have the conventional good looks. Although they are awesome when I saw them in the child cast rows.

Since we're talking cheerleaders, it's probably too much to hope this will be even close to as great as Bring It On.
Now that movie was brilliant. And way ahead of its time.

that really is a desperate struggle but doesnt help anyone live a meaningful life. it is sad...
here, in estonia, however there are many private schools popping up that emphasize creativity and role play and "station" system instead of the usual lessons and grading. we´ll see how it works out, however, I think these new schools face their own struggles, cause the routine is hard to break. you have to be a whole new kind of teacher first...

Just go for it KYJ. I just don't want to see an idol being cast as the lead. Even if there's some idols who can actually act.
I'm so happy the drama will be more like school 2013. The latter is among my favorites dramas. It was great, realistic and mostly human.

Agreed. I'm tired of these idols just taking over roles from actor. It's sad but it's not the idols fault entirely. Unfortunately, Korean producers can't help it either... it's the company who are producing it that are money hungry who would prefer popularity over actual acting talent.
For example, I really enjoyed KANG MIN AH who played young Kim Tae Hee in Jang Ok Jeong but we don't see her as often because most likely because she isn't a Kpop idol or debut in a Kpop group. Sad but true.

KBS is really going after its top child stars for drama leads, isn't it? First Kim So-hyun, now Kim Yoo-jung.....and this looks like it's going to be made on a schedule as tight as School 2015, which cast its leads less than 3 weeks before the premiere date.
And yeah, KYJ/KSH will probably always be compared, which just makes me wish them equal success. They have the potential to take the industry by storm and finally get acting talent back into centre stage for leading ladies.

Just curious why others compare KIm yoo jung and kim so hyun ? they have the same agency is it not? and they are friends? do the public want them to fight with each thrt? shouldn't the public compare them with kim saeron ? or is she not par talent wise with them? I dont get it?

Same age, same agency, they even worked together in the past and the public started sitting up and taking notice of them in the same year.
Kim Sae-ron is younger and from a different agency which is why she doesn't get drawn into the comparison.

well its good that both are still under the same agency it means they still are okay with each other and are mature not to be swayed by the public... if I am in their shoes I might feel fed up with all this comparing and just quit ... being compared to someone is very stressful for a teenager.
I wish they will both do a drama show were in both are main leads who are friends at first but then they soon fall apart and at the end of the show they will reconcile. It might help to ease the public to see them in a show, fighting ...to stop this comparing. Give us something about girl friendship and girl power. I believe both girls will do a good job with it.
I feel pity for them when I see others comparing them.
any way all the best for her if she accepts!

I get that they're the top two child actresses of their generation but it's weird how much the media tries to compare them. They're little kids and both of them must feel so pressured and i honestly feel that it's hard for both of them to stay friends. I'm actually a KSH fan but even KSH herself said that she respects KYJ and called her "sunbae" as KYJ has been around for a long time and was well known since she was very little. I always wanted them to do a drama together but I don't think their agency will let them or even be in the same frame for that matter

I know but I am still hopeful :-)
But I like them to act together in a show wherein they will not fought over because of a guy like in METS but other things like school status blah blah! Top 2 leading ladies in 1 show! Just thinking about it makes me excited!

In my opinion, she should do all the high school dramas she wants right now. She's at the right age and shouldn't be playing "leading lady" roles in makjang dramas or something. She's too young for that! I, for one, don't want the young actresses to grow up too quick. Makes for awkward pairings and I say, let them master their craft slowly and at their own pace.

She is a talented young actress who I am sure can do the role assigned to her well for that I have confidence in. However, I'm undergoing a predicament of stereotyping the Korean education system which from as far as I and most people know does not allow for sports or other recreational/social activity much less cheerleading in their schools as their focus is primarily on rote education 24/7. So I am having difficulty imagining if this premise/drama will work. I just cannot see Korean student girls as cheerleaders in Korea based on their existing system. In the US or Canada or similar countries there is the possibility but in that country? its questionable.
I'm wondering if I'm alone here with that view, when it shows we'll see but for now Cheer up is on the fence for me.

Oh, come on. Yes, there is a big emphasis on studying, but there are still plenty of sports/recreational activities for students to take part in. I went to international high school there for two years, and we had many competitive sports teams and plenty of clubs (we were required to be in at least one, actually, until senior year -- though most people kept with the clubs in their senior year, too), from choir to UNICEF to robotics to debate. Inb4 "oh, that's because you went to a private international school, not regular high school": my cousins also schooled in Korea at regular high schools, and while they did not have as many sports teams at their specific school (not sure if it's so across the board), they still had plenty of clubs. My male cousin, for example, was a soccer player, while his sister was in a dance club/team and in the choir. And their school did have a cheerleading club, though it was new (it started her senior year, which was 3-4 years ago) and not that popular from the offset.
I'm somewhat apologetic for exploding at you, because you're only one of the many people I've seen saying stuff like this. ...Just, guys, stop taking everything you see in dramas or read on Netizenbuzz, which is largely exaggerated and misrepresented to fit a certain narrative (or, in the case of NB/similar translating sites: they translate articles that look at one side of the issue, discuss specific problems, because the articles are directed toward readers, Korean citizens, who already know the context; they don't need to balance or provide background information for them. The netizens that comment usually represent extremes, or, depending on the site, there with a political agenda that is not going to be obvious to the ordinary NB reader) as the truth of What Happens In Korea.

Exactly.
And even if one only based Korean high schools solely on K-dramas and K-films, it's almost a stereotype of students belonging to various clubs (music, ssireum, taek won-do, Kendo, etc.) and basically acting like "gangs" competing against each other.
And really, how else are there Korean baseball players, soccer/futball players, basketball player, volleyball players, gymnasts, figure skaters, much less musicians, etc., muxh less kids playing video games, just hanging out, etc.

Only if it's not opposite a dang Kpop idol. (sigh)
Since she's still at a young age, I love that she is considering roles that fits her age. She definitely is an actress with so much potential and she's shown it in the roles I've seen in so far. I cannot wait to see her evolve and become the versatile actress that I know she continue to be. She's one of those actress that you can say, "just wait for it..."
I would love her to reunite eventually with Yeo Jin Gu but I don't think this would be the 'right' reunion I would prefer. The storyline seems... meh.

Same. I don't really want Yeo jin goo here(something more meaty for him would be preferrable), but I would like for her to be paired with a teen actor around her age, like Oh Jae Moo or Park Gun Tae, instead of a less experienced idol.

Must be hard for child actors in Korea ... unlike the older actors that have time to have PS done before they debute or are even discovered, child actors grow up in front of the camera so only the truely naturally beautiful ones progress ... of course by beauty ... I mean the Korean ideals of beauty ... which to me seem nearly impossible to achieve naturally.

Please - like there haven't been numerous child actors who have continued acting as they have entered adulthood (and a lot more who have done commercials, advertisements, music videos, etc.) and all of the the actresses who are known as for their beauty are natural.
The way some people make it seem is as if Korea is the one country where there isn't people who are naturally blessed genetically.

Nope ... not at all what I'm saying ....
Read it again ...
I didn't say that Koreans are beautiful ...
I'm saying the Korean ideals of beauty are nearly impossible to achieve naturally, which makes it hard for child actors who can't get the same amount of PS that other older actors get without being obvious about it.

I really wish Yoo Jung accepted this drama 'cause the casts are so good but then :---( yeah hoping for the best and great dramas that she will be the lead role in the future.
I think she's more focused now in movies so yeah hoping for the best for her!
