Dramabeans exclusive: Interview with City Hunter, Doctor Stranger PD Jin Hyuk
by javabeans
We’ve got a special treat for you guys today, and are excited to present to you our very own exclusive interview with one of dramaland’s hitmaker directors, PD Jin Hyuk, whom you may know from his string of popular dramas like Brilliant Legacy, Prosecutor Princess, City Hunter, Master’s Sun, and Doctor Stranger. I know, so many of our favorites!
As you may know, PD Jin was recently in LA to speak as a featured guest at KCON 2015. We were fortunate to hear his panel, and honored when he graciously agreed to an interview. We’d heard great things about him, and can now confirm firsthand that he’s as lovely, friendly, and thoughtful as we’d heard.
You probably don’t need us to tell you how much girlfriday and I geeked out to get to pick the brains of a famous PD (City Hunterrrrrrr!) and ask questions we’d always wanted to ask, from what it’s like working in the drama-making system to specific questions about characters and dramas and sequel opportunities.
We asked PD Jin about whether he knew about international response to his dramas and if he read much, and he explained that he didn’t know that sites like Dramabeans existed but that he’d be sure to read up on it. And we’ll be sure to send him this post, so if you have questions, comments, or just plain love to send his way, please do! (He reads English, so no problems there.)
Without further ado, let’s just dive right in:

I did not watch all the dramas he directed. But I enjoyed all the ones I watched generally. Of cos there were flaws in story at times due to many factors or pressure that it turned out that way. It's not something that we can control. Shout out to PD nim : You are so cute in the interview. I feel that there are certain things you might want to express but you still phrase it in a nice way not to offend others. I feel you. It's always the romance and relationship in the end. I wonder who's your favorite ship.

It was thrilling to see and hear PD Jin Hyuk in person at the KCON2015 panel discussion. The co-host and commentator were also interesting. (Sorry I don't remember their names and I didn't find them listed in my program book. If someone knows, I would appreciate the information.)
I particularly enjoyed the City Hunter slow-motion fight filming video and hearing Director Jin talk about the filming decisions and execution.
In this interview I learned something about reconciling the writer's vision with the technical and business aspects of a drama. Clearly Director Jin has a level head and wide understanding.
Echoing others in this thread - more contact with directors, writers and other artists involved in the dramas we love would be very welcome and I hope they might think about ways to engage with US/North American/English speaking fans (my bias since I am an English speaker) on a regular basis. Actors too, although we do get more translated information about celebrities.
I am putting out the wish that Director Jin, since he has now seen for himself, would become an ambassador for the interest of ES international fans by conveying our avid attention!
Thank you DB and GF for intelligent interview questions that balanced the quest for knowledge and fandom, and for publishing this interview. I loved meeting you, too. I thought of a hundred things I wanted to ask you - after I left. LOL.
Cheers.

Oh! That's interesting about the Master's Sun. I thought he purposely made the tone less scary at the later half to reflect how Tae Gong‑shil felt about the ghosts - at first she was really scared of them...then the ghosts just became the norm. I loved it and I really hope for Master's Sun 2.

As soon as dB started talking about a sequel to City Hunter I immediately started to think, "No, Master's Sun need a sequel. There's still more story to tell with those characters."
Then PD-nim said Master's Sun 2, and I lost my mind! Please please please please please please please make this happen PD-nim!

Thank you so much for the interview! I got so excited to hear the behind the scene thoughts of the PD. The questions you guys asked were excellent, I hope for more opportunities for you guys to be doing interviews like this ^^.
I was especially interested in his response for Doctor Strange! I was rooting for Kang Sora too!! Lost so much interest in the drama once I saw it go the other way :<
