Con Artists director courts Kim Young-kwang for legal thriller
by girlfriday
Director Kim Hong-sun of the Kim Woo-bin heist movie Con Artists (or Technicians) and the thriller Traffickers is returning with a new movie called Broker, and an offer is out to Kim Young-kwang (Pinocchio) to headline. Kim is currently in the midst of shoots for his new JTBC disaster drama D-Day which premieres in September, and is still unconfirmed for the movie.
The project will be a legal thriller about the murder of a young woman. The victim is the daughter of the Minister of Justice, which means that the full weight of the prosecutor’s office will be behind the murder trial. Kim Young-kwang has been cast to play the leading character, a lawyer, and the leading lady will be a public defender.
It’ll be interesting to see if Kim Young-kwang can pull off weightier roles like this, because so far he’s been much better with light, cheeky characters (Pinocchio, Plus Nine Boys, Hot Blooded Youth). But D-Day might be a good stepping stone to starring in dramatic thrillers — that is, if D-Day delivers the blockbuster-scale human drama that it’s promising.
I don’t know if I buy Kim Young-kwang as a high-powered lawyer, but maybe he could be the idealistic underdog type. Maybe it’s his first trial ever, and he’s just new at everything — I could roll with that.
Broker plans to start shooting in November for a release next year.

looking at his past performances in white christmas and doctor ian, kim young kwang could definitely nail a heavy lawyer type character, hands down.

couldn't agree more.. his complex character in White Christmas is my favorite, (along with Mad Mireu), and considering how he did pretty well in that kind of roles, he seems can really nail heavy character..

I really liked him in Plus Nine Boys and found him annoying but eventually charming in Pinocchio. I honestly was really excited to see him in future projects.
I know I'm late to the party but I only recently found out about his past bout of body shaming interviews and it has really soured the whole thing for me. I can't help but be completely disgusted by him now.
What kind of person actually thinks it's okay to judge people bases on their appearances and to say that they only like people who are attractive? I means seriously, wtf? I'm just so turned off by the sight of him now that I don't think I will be able to watch anymore of his projects unless they are particularly goo and he is a secondary character.

I know what you mean, it's hard not to associate that image with him now that I've learned what he said in the past. It's also gonna take a bit to make me watch him in anything as well.

Same! I really don't want to watch anything with him in it which is unfortunate because some of the dramas actually look kind of interesting. If he wasn't the main lead, it wouldn't matter but my contempt for him really takes away from the enjoying experience.

Me too.. Obviously his comment was shameful but I made me think that was he that stupid to say all these things ??? I mean I read the interview and noticed , he repeated his words as if he did not want the listeners to ignore those comments, I guess he wanted some negative publicity :P btw his comments were reallyyy awful but I am trying no to pay much attention to that because I really want to watch D-Day. Jung So min is there to :)

I loved him as an actor before but after his shallow comment...well...I can't get past it. It's all right to think it, coz being moral means dealing with one's own negativity... but to let it out vocally? There are so many insecure girls who are trying hard to love themselves...even without such comments. I'm glad he's doing well...but that's all...

This director must love model actors. I thought Con Artists was kind of meh. I have no interest this guy who seems to be in love with himself irl :p.

yeah, that movie was way more style than substance - something even Kim Woo-bin admitted.
I do try not to let my perception of actors' real-life personas affect the way I see them in movies (doesn't matter how nice someone is irl, if they're a terrible actor). And this guy isn't even close to 10 percent of Park Shi-hoo levels of off-putting for me, but if he continues to say douchey things in real life, that's not cool.
I do object to projecting his nonsense onto his model-actor friends and tarring them with the same brush, though. That's not fair to them.

I never liked him before anyway. I do like Kim Woo-bin though. He was the reason why I checked out Con Artists.
I tend to follow actors, directors and writers. Those that I really like.

yeah I could take or leave him, he's a decent enough actor but there are plenty of decent enough actors even among his model buddies, who could probably do what he does and do it better.
I also like to follow directors, writers and actors once I like them, but my interest is confined to their tv/film projects. I'd rather not know their personalities, if they say stuff like this.

Being a complete self absorbed jerk is not a crime but it's a turn off for me. I don't even think he is good looking. He is pale in comparison to my oppa lol.

well, considering who our oppa is, most people pale in comparison to him anyway ;)
Though his buddy Lee Soo-hyuk seems to be holding up ok, for now. I haven't forgotten the sight of Gwi in a hanbok!

I didn't like him before I've read about what kind of person he is which I usually don't take seriously but this guy have always rubbed me the wrong way. My intuition about him was right. He's overrated as an actor anyway. I'll pass. NEXT!

None of his performances has impressed me as anything special and I don't expect him to ever excel as an actor. I do expect that he will one day realize that he was lucky to be a tall, handsome young man with opportunities beyond his talent and to wish he could make amends for saying a lot of really douchey things.
Or maybe not.

Oh...it's cold in here, lol.
I quite like him as an actor. I think he's got charm, talent, and a natural screen presence. As for his comments, I haven't seen him get into anymore issues of that nature so I can only assume he's learned his lesson (I believe that was his first feature interview and he really talked...too much). I have no idea if he's reflected or not but I've liked what I've seen from him so far, so if there is something interesting with him in it, I'm not opposed.
Anyway, good for him if he accepts what looks like the next blockbuster.

I hope you're right and that he really has learned his lesson, because no one is about to let this go anytime soon.
Frankly, I was appalled the editors of the magazine thought that part of the interview was appropriate to print - it was a teen magazine, and to have a celebrity saying stuff like this in it....... is extraordinarily bad judgement, both from KYK and the editorial team.

I'm surprised so many people think that last interview was a one-off. He has said these things before and years apart. Seems like has been ingrained in him for so many years, it's likely he still hold that mindset, he's just more careful now.

and also, I admit we seem to be much harsher on this guy than on proven human garbage like Kim Hyun Joong and Park Shi Hoo. I mean, the fact that those guys have defenders appalls me.

I don't know much about all those personal issues, but if I recall correctly, KHJ and PSH garnered negative reactions for what they have done.
KYK on the other hand has certain somewhat controversial beliefs and dared to express them publicly. The criticism towards him usually emphasises the latter portion, interestingly. It's okay for him to think that way as long as we, the public, don't have to hear about it.

Pretty much. I only ever remember one person who always said she can't fault him for whatever his taste in women was. But, I think she got tired of arguing with people about it.

Good point. I think it's a mix of both for me, his screwed-up thinking (talk about the toxic result of a beauty-obsessed society) and his choice of forum to state it in.

I think it's just because he doesn't have as big of a following as PSH or KHJ. Those two were huge before their crimes/controversies with years of garnered fanbase that still stuck around and defend them. KYK never reached that level of fame so there's not as many people around ready to defend his misogyny all day.

I doubt it's going to be a blockbuster or even close to it. The movie industry has way more talents and star power than dramaland. This guy is not even an established lead actor in dramaland yet and the director only did 2 movies so far.
Only Yoo Ah-in is lucky enough to do 2 movies with the top actors and directors this year.

I dunno whether to laugh or to cry at his stupidity for saying such comments. Boy this guy's really in love with himself and to be honest...he should know he ain't that pretty according to everyone's standards aswell. Anyway...but he can act...not great...but okay and he's got good projects that I'd love to see better actors do...but he's got them. I hope he did publicly apologize for his oversight...coz life is treating him well...he should deserve it...and at least be a better person because of it...in the meantime I'll just watch other amazing dramas or reruns...Healer anyone?
