Yoo Ah-in and Song Kang-ho’s tragic paternal strife in Sado

The story of Crown Prince Sado never fails to get a visceral reaction out of me, no matter how many times it’s told and retold in film and television. Granted, last year’s drama rendition of Joseon’s most tragic father-son story — SBS’s Secret Door with Lee Je-hoon and Han Seok-kyu — was a disappointment on many fronts. (Still. So. Mad. At. You. Show.) But that also makes me eager to have the movie Sado deliver on all of the epic tragedy that Secret Door couldn’t manage to do.

The first teaser and poster are out for the newest sageuk from director Lee Jun-ik (The King and the Clown), which stars Song Kang-ho (The Attorney) as King Yeongjo, the 21st king of Joseon who reigned for the better part of the 18th century, and Yoo Ah-in (Secret Love Affair) as his son Crown Prince Sado who was sentenced to death by his own father. The movie also stars Moon Geun-young (Goddes of Fire Jung-yi) as Sado’s wife Lady Hyegyeong, and So Ji-sub (Master’s Sun) cameos as their son King Jeongjo.

Sado’s death will likely forever remain a mystery, which is why it’s so often the subject of drama and film — he was a son who could never please his father and was, by many accounts, driven mad by it. There are endless theories about the death being a political power play, and lingering doubts over whether Sado conspired to kill his father. In the end Yeongjo ordered his 27-year-old son to climb into a rice chest, in which he died a gruesome death that took eight days.

The movie doesn’t posit a specific conspiracy theory or offer a twist on the classic story (at least in promotional descriptions), and plans to focus on the tragedy of historical events. There’s really so much pathos in the story as it is that there’s no need to look elsewhere. The synopsis is simple: “Yeongjo, a father who had to be a king at all times. Sado, a crown prince who wanted to be a son for just one moment. A story about the most tragic family history ever recorded.”

The teaser opens on Yeongjo posthumously naming his son Sado Seja, which means “Prince of Mournful Thoughts.” Yeongjo says that this isn’t a national matter but a family one, and he reasons that as the head of a household, he is punishing someone who is trying to kill his father. Sado cries, “Since when have you ever thought of me as the crown prince, or as your son?!” Caption: “Father and son, conflicting fates.” And as Yeongjo chooses to lock his son in the rice chest to die, he simply says, “This is our fate.” I can’t wait to see these two actors face off, and for Yoo Ah-in to make me cry. *readies box of tissues*

Sado releases in theaters this September.

Why didn't they just feed Sado poison? Suffocating him to death in a box over days is so nasty.

It does seem unnecessarily gruesome, but there's actually an explanation for the use of the rice chest. From what I've read, members of the royal family couldn't be killed by a method that would disfigure or dismember the body. Poison wouldn't do that, but it would imply that it was a criminal execution (which in turn would have negative implications for Sado's family), so that method was out the window. Alternatively, Sado could have killed himself by self-strangulation, which he actually did try. But the thing is, his tutors were duty-bound to try to save him, so they would loosen the knots before he could die. Ultimately, the last method left was the rice chest. He actually willingly entered the chest so that it would not look like a criminal execution. Isn't that so tragic?

Nice explanation. I was wondering about too, about his death.

Tragic indeed but Sado's legacy did not end there. His son Yi-san was one of the most capable king during the Joseon era. Yi-san also did a lot to honor his father which include elevating his status and title from prince to emperor.

Since So Ji-sub is making a cameo appearance. I am pretty sure it will end well with a grown up Yi-san.

I wish Lee Jun-ki would go back to his root and do more movies. Drama land is not doing him any favors in my humble opinion. He is not being challenge enough.

I would love to see him do what YAI is doing. Pick a movie once in a while. Act along side one of Korea's best with a challenging role that has been done to death before and try to make it his own.

Judging from the preview, I think YAI is going to own it.

I couldn't agree more!! His role in the King and the Clown is what made me a fan... Dramas are great (more screen time) but I really miss seeing him actually act, too ?

So excited. I was disappointed by the drama, because I really want to see the craziness of Sado and the intensity of the father and son.
And I know Yoo Ah In can never disappoint when it came to displaying emotions on screen.

Just the other day I thought why this movie haven't promoted anything and no news at all?
Then bam! There's a poster and trailer!
Since YAI and MGY haven't had dramas this year at least we would be able to see them on big screen.

I find the whole story gruesome and do not understand why Korea keep remaking it. As a movie, viewers would actually have to pay to see it.I find the whole th8ng sadistic and a bit sick.

I think it's because Korean people are still debating over Sado's real story. History said that the prince was insane and given to murderous rages that resulted in many deaths. The way the prince has been perceived is largely based on his wife’s memoir titled “Hanjoongrok”. However, many people believe that Sado was not a psycho, as written in ‘Hanjoongrok’, but rather a man with good qualities who faced an unfortunate death due to his revolutionary thinking that shook the leading group’s foundation.

This looks awesome but I'm afraid that it'd be too tragic and gruesome for me to watch. Tragic stories usually lead me into sleepless nights :(

Song Kangho and Yoo Ah-in are certainly bombs in terms of screen presence, I'm already sucked into their acting even though this is just a trailer.

I'm seriously torn between two options: watching it and having nightmares for days or not watching it but drowning in the sea of curiosity.

P.S. DO THEY REALLY HAVE TO SHOW THE RICE CHEST?!!

Such a gruesome death. I'm claustrophobic, so this will be hard for me to watch. When I first heard how the father killed the son, I was horrified...
But I love all the actors in this film, so I've going to watch it, but with my hands over my eyes....probably have nightmares later.

I love historical films so this is a must see, also I've been reading up on the whole story.
There seems to be mixed views on the subject, some saying Sado was as crazy as the said while others disagree.
Maybe it will be one of those stories that will never be confirmed.

This is a good teaser and I like the chemistry between the two. I hope the best for this film. (Song Kang Ho is my all time favorite Korean actor so I may be a bit biased :) ) But doesn't he look awesome as the king?
