Suzy bows out of Cheese in the Trap
by javabeans
Can’t say I’m surprised that Suzy won’t be headlining the drama adaptation of Cheese in the Trap after all—not after the swift and loud netizen outcry to the initial announcement that she was considering. It’s funny how most of it was along the lines of We like Suzy, really we do, but please not this drama! Which I get, because that was basically my reaction too.
Park Hae-jin (Bad Guys) is still the only actor attached, but the drama does have a writer now, to work alongside director Lee Yoon-jung (Heart to Heart, Coffee Prince): Kim Nam-hee has signed on, which is a difficult choice to examine since I don’t believe she’s written much other than 2006’s melo Heaven’s Tree and 2008’s Little Mom Scandal 1. Let’s hope there’s a solid reason she was picked after all these years of hiatus.
For now, the search for the heroine continues, which is an unenviable task since the hardcore Cheese fanbase is so invested in the casting. Understandably so, given the popularity of the webtoon, although it makes the decision-making process trickier than most dramas.
At least they still have plenty of time to find the right person; Cheese in the Trap is set to air on tvN as a Monday-Tuesday drama in October.

People's enjoyment and/or opinion doesn't equate good ratings.
I too enjoyed Nodame Cantabile but rating-wise and story-wise the drama is a flop. Considering how J-drama and the manga/anime have so much fanbase and praises when it comes to good storytelling, the Korean remake was certainly not as good as the J-version.

Granted, I've never read the manga, but I liked the Korean version a LOT better...and this is coming from someone who speaks Japanese, has a long history with Japanese dramas, and doesn't speak a lick of Korean beyond common phrases. The Korean version seemed a lot more toned down, which may not have been representative of the source material, but something I appreciated much more given the medium (what works in manga or anime form doesn't always translate seamlessly to live action).

That's what I'm curious about. All this concern about the actress, but no worries about a writer who hasn't done anything in almost a decade.
I read on here how great of an actress the lead in Masked Prosecutor was supposed to be. Man!! Either everybody was lying or a bad script will doom even the best talent.

If anything, the worst thing to come out of that whole Tomorrow's Cantabile mess (besides the drama itself) is that Yoona seemed to have been their first choice. Over Shim Eun-kyung. Yeah. The role wasn't worth it, but still.
I don't know, this system has a way of burying real talent in a mountain of pretty faces, poseurs, and hacks, both in terms of cast and crew. For every Jung Ha-yeon and Ahn Pan-seok, artists who have succeeded without compromise, there are like fifty monstrously talented and creative people who're always scraping the bottom of the barrel--people like Shin Eun-kyung, Oh Man-seok, Kim Yong-soo, Kim Heung-dong, even Kim Jin-min of late. It took Yoo Sung-yeol years to get Cruel City on air. Kwak Jung-hwan was almost fired by KBS for doing Conspiracy in the Court. Meanwhile, soulless hacks like Kim Eun-sook get rewarded with massive budgets and epic projects, and empty suits like Yoona and Suzy have the world at their fingertips. And wonderful source material like Nodame Cantabile keeps getting butchered into formulaic tripe to make the grade.
/rant. Sorry haha.

This conversation is a never-ending vicious circle! As long as major agencies keep on promoting their un/semi-talented idols and/or actors (just because there's lots of money invested in their careers) in every single project regardless the real cost (ratings, quality of the final project, restrictions in terms of their image etc) the outcome will practically remain the same: Real actors won't stand a chance!
So why don't they invest in something that's worth all that trouble after all? That's the question! And why has the industry become so dependent on those big agencies and their "products"-celebrities-(you can add anything here but the word 'artist")?
juniper
July 14, 2015 at 4:49 AM
@kalel. Exactly! Kdrama needs to think of its future and reorganize its priorities. Ratings are tanking across the board, so at this point this desperation for buzz is like the industry chasing its own tail. And when you add idols to the equation, it's shooting itself in the foot. They just need to buckle down, commit to quality first and ratings second, and live through a tight couple of years. At this point the average Kdrama has no artistic integrity and is an insult to the viewer's intelligence. And it sucks, all the more because it doesn't have to be this way.
Adal
July 14, 2015 at 6:48 AM
@juniper and kalel
I think you are a tad prejudiced when it comes to idols. There are idols doing good work in the acting department (examples Rain, Eric, Im Si Wan, IU, Seo In Guk and many more). Some are equally as good or even better than regular actors. It is true that some idols suck. But don't paint all of them with the same brush.
juniper
July 14, 2015 at 12:07 PM
@Adal. I don't necessarily agree with all the names you listed as being good actors, but point taken. I have my own list like that, too. Jeon Hye-bin is a phenomenal actress for instance. However, while there are always a few exceptions to every rule, the reason I'm painting them with a broad brush is because it's not personal, it's systemic. Hiring practices are dishonest, effed up and moreover based on disproven formulas to generate money and ratings, meaning idols (and other stars who aren't famous for their skills, let's put it that way) are privileged over more talented people on a regular basis for no real reason except that the system is broken. I won't even get into how much money must be wasted every year on star caches for people who are not bringing in the ratings anyway because nobody is, money that could have been better spent on the production and paying the rest of the cast and crew a fairer wage.
kalel
July 14, 2015 at 12:44 PM
@Adal,
I could add at least 15 ex-idols who are capable of acting in that list of yours. The problem is that these names come from 2 or 3 generations of idols-turned-actors while we're unable to mention more than a couple of dozens who can do a decent(or a fine) job for that matter.
Besides, that's why I've talked about semi-talented actors, too. I can think of plenty who are almost adequate and yet their agencies use the artificial buzz through social and mass media promoting their careers. Meanwhile, other actors on the same level and alas, better than just mediocre struggle for years.
So, my question still stands: What's wrong with the talented ones? Why do agencies hate them or do not promote them properly? Why don't they invest in them but prefer others instead? Especially nowadays that ratings and quality keep on deteriorating exactly how @juniper has vividly described.

I don't think that's the same, honestly. I'm not a fan of Hyeri either, but the previous Answer Me installments have taken unknown leads or actors with bad reputations, and turned them into winning characters that the audience could love. I think if anyone can make Hyeri likable, it's that team, and I feel optimistic that she might come out of it a better performer.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Answer Me franchise and it will really, super duper suck if the newest one turns out to be a dud. But I still feel like we should give Hyeri a chance to impress us. I wasn't too thrilled about Go Ara either, but she totally won me over. And Hyeri is not entirely without charm. I'm willing for her to do a good job and maybe kickstart an awesome future career! Hyeri fighting!!

I actually think like you, the AM team has done a really good job with the previous installment despite having casted people who never acted or people who had bad acting reputation. I don't know, I think Park Bo-young would probably make a good Hong-seol even if she doesn't seem like a perfect fit. The magic of being a good actress is that you can adapt to roles that aren't tailor made to suit your image. She's not like Suzy, where what you see is all you get.

I'd love a film actress in this role – Park Bo-young, Go Ah-sung, etc. But I have got no hope for this, given that they started with Suzy as their first choice. Park Hae-jin isn't that impressive to me either – he's okay. I'm also worried if they take this sort of approach to casting, that the writing/directing might not be that great either. One of the dangers with "Cheese in the Trap" is that there are a lot of characters and they're all three-dimensional, complex and unpredictable, but I could see some of them be turned into the usual kind of second leads that serve as plot devices rather than being characters of their own.

Go Ah-sung would be AMAZING, I'm still blown away by how perfect she was in Grapevine, and how she held it down for 30 episodes straight. She's definitely one of the great talents of her generation. But she's busy filming a movie, I doubt she'll be free.
and I'm also pessimistic about the initial choice for this role being, well, Suzy. It's not exactly encouraging re: what the writer and PD see the characters as.

July 13, 2015 at 3:32 PM
I'm worried, too. If Lee Yoon-jung is really signing on as the PD, we're in good hands, but if the writer misinterprets Cheese in the Trap and ignores the creepy undertones and complexity that make it so great, there's not a whole lot she can do to compensate. Setting that kind of mood on your own would require someone on the level of Kim Yong-soo.

You just said that. Nodame was flop because of the writing and not much about casts and acting. If Yoona got the role, that drama was flop harder from acting to writing. Actors with good acting skill wont suffer much from flop projects. They can just move on and prove their skill with better projects. However, bad actors like Suzy and Yoona, flop projects will follow them forever.

Nah. Shim Eun-kyung overacted like her pants were on fire so she didn't save the drama but rather ruined it further in many people's opinion.
As for 'flop dramas following the likes of Suzy and Yoona'... Hmmm, I dunno about Yoona but maybe you should double check Suzy's main lead track record. Dream High, Architecture 101, Gu Family Book - those are ratings and/or cult hits.

What i mean is that a flop project will follow them forever. Suzy, even with good rating works, has never made people to forget her bad acting. Thus the combination of bad acting and flop project would be harder for people to to get over it esp with a popular webtoon like CitT

Shim Eun-kyung on her worst day>>>>>>>Yoona on her best. The problem imo was that Kdrama simply can't connect the dots as far as manga goes. Nodame is a character very particular to manga's far-out, low-key sensibilities, and was lost in translation in the most disastrous way possible. It's an understatement to say that the writing and directing did SEK no favors.

Same can't be said about HGI - 10 years and still the same acting. Even KTH improved!

Her fans keep saying she's "improving" but she is still held to a really low standard compared to other young actresses or even idol actresses who are close to her age and experience level.
Like the kind of performance that Jung Eunji gets criticised for, people would praise Susie to the skies if she could even reach that level. Even IU who debuted with her and is close in age, did better in her acting than Suzy has ever done, including the "nation's first love" role.

Lets see, actress that have acting that are not considered good, KTH is an actress for years now, Hsn Ga In, young actress Jin Se Yeon, Goo Ara (who improved through reply 1994) SSK (who was ok in girl who see smell but is terrible at melos) etc
Jung Eunji is a special case. Girl is just natural. Plus she even confessed her character and herself are so much alike, it was like playing herself. Put her in another drama with a very different character, and she won't as good as Reply 1997.

Jung Eun-ji even in her not-as-great followups to Answer Me 1997, still delivered better acting than Suzy ever has.
And I too believe that if Suzy had ever put in a performance that was of the same standard as JEJ in, say, Trot Lovers (a performance Eunji was criticised for), Suzy fans would definitely be trying to sell it as the second coming of Shim Eun-ha. Though honestly, I don't think she has it in her to even reach Jung Eun-ji's level.

I disagree with your comparison, kalel. There is a big difference between professionals and "celebrities".
Han Ga-In is a professional. No Sarah Bernhardt granted, but someone who knows she's casted complimentary, lets her more talented co-stars act without ruining his or her scenes and seems to fully comprehend her limitations.
Celebrities in current trend (people who aren't exactly actors nor singers nor artists in general) get included in projects by their representatives to promote their "persona" without much consideration for the actual project or the longevity of the "persona". And that's not a korean eccentricity, but an international phenomenon.

So elaborate, by all means! Where's exactly Suzy's "improvement"?
I agree with @korini that comparing an actor and a celebrity is extemely wrong and insulting to the real professional; I'm one of those people and I know I shouldn't have done it either. But in order to establish a mutual code of communication, I myself did this bizarre comparison.
I can't honestly see Suzy's acting development in any of her (few, that's true) works; I can very well see, however, how being a celebrity has turned her into a lazier and a more inadequate actor-idol than before :-(
I'm an open-minded person, nonetheless, and welcome every reasonable argument against mine - so long as it's not "whetever", "it's my bias" and "you're biased against(put any name you want, here)" :-)

well @kayla, i read in a forum somewhere that chun woo hee might not be avilable but the person didn't actually explain why. My guess is she's a big name in movies, or should I say blooming? And she hasn't done any drama since 2011. Maybe she'll focus more on building her reputation in the film industry before going for a drama. But I don't see the problem if she chose CITT coz 1) it already has a big fan base, and 2) the character seol is not any typical kdrama heroine. Seol and her thoughts can come out to be really judging and perceptive, but she's really adorable, quirky and loving it brings out the best of both jung and inho

Being mainly a movie actor is not a problem because this year many movie actors also act in dramas. But IMO I think she would be better doing movies than in cable drama like this.

Maybe this is totally off base, and I'm 90% sure she won't be in the running, but I'd like to see Kim Ga Eun take this role. She still hasn't had a primetime headliner role, but I've just enjoyed her so much in everything I've seen her in so far, and I'd love to see her do this! I could see her having good chemistry with Park Hae Jin too.

I know the professionals destroy the most promising dramas, films, songs, videos, clothing, etc. with a regularity bordering on trolling, but "Netizens" (which I'm still amazed are a real thing) show signs of such questionable reasoning so very, very often I hesitate to accept anything they're this positive they're right about.
She's already dating Lee Min Ho, so it's probably better that she doesn't incite any further animosity from the delu-side of the Netizentry by taking the role.

@Bobee - If you're trying to liken personal attacks on commenters here to said commenters' critique of some kpop idol's acting skills (who, as has been pointed out, you most certainly have never even interacted with personally), that speaks for itself.
I mean, seriously, you want to get that invested in some celebrity that you go around attacking others/justifying attacks on their behalf? Just because you like their looks and image?
Sounds like you Suzy fans are the hypocrites here. Big fat ones.

I don't care what kind of victim complex y'all have going on for her, I'm reporting foxykit's comment because that is simply not language that is acceptable to use against ANY commenter, no matter how uncomplimentary they've been about your idol.

All the so-called "hate" comments on this post are barely attacks. I've seen worse on other actresses. You can't compare comments like "I'm glad she dropped it." or "I hope we don't have to see her in dramas" to actual INSULTS and attacks to others. And most of them actually say they LIKE Suzy but just not acting. so no, I don't think that's exactly hypocrisy.

I have just thought about this - Moon Geun Young might be a nice Hong Seol. Her physique might be not match how Hong Seol looks in the manhwa; but Moon Geun Young can nail the nuances of her character. I looked at MGY's pictures just to check if she can do the part despite the differences in physical appearance. I believe that MGY's pictures in Marie Claire last year (http://www.soompi.com/2014/05/15/moon-geun-young-takes-on-a-mature-concept-for-marie-claire/) proves that it might work out if she gets the role.

I think it is really unfair and at the same time disappointing to read everyone playing the role of an expert. Who are you to judge if someone is suitable or not when you don't even know the outcome yet? You have not seen Suzy acted in a drama for the past few years since GFB and how would you know her acting is still bad? Everyone is so quick to judge as if they are in the production team. I am sure there are some very vocal netizens who probably have not watched any of Suzy's show and are making sweeping statements because it is easier to do so behind the keyboard. What I am trying to say is everyone deserve to be given a chance to prove themselves and who are we to decide if someone is good enough or not.
How would you feel if someone is judging you based on their little knowledge of you and just keep pumping negative thoughts and judgement about you? Wouldn't you feel hurt and unfair because you didn't even have the chance to show if you are really not up to standard?
K-version Nodame is a good example. So much negative feedback around Yoona's casting and pushing for Shim Eun Kyung to be casted because she is the most suitable. So Yoona rejected and they got the actress for their beloved remake. Nodame K-version is not just bad writing, Shim Eun Kyung was a unnatural and didn't do a good job as she was expected to.

Any actor/actress who gets cast in a remake of a beloved drama will always have that deficit because, honestly, the people who love the original will always be comparing and almost no one will be good enough to equal or outshine the original cast. Look at Shim Eun Kyung.. I think she's one of the best actresses of her generation and she only fared decently because, let's face it, no one can really do Nodame like Ueno Juri. Yoona and Suzy fans should not take stuff like this personally.

> You have not seen Suzy acted in a drama for the past few >years since GFB and how would you know her acting is still >bad?
In truth I have no dog in this fight because I don't know the webtoon and I've only seen Suzy in GFB. That said, if she hasn't acted SINCE then, it makes sense to me that people might be dubious about this next possible outing. She could, indeed, have been taking acting lessons in the interim, but I don't blame people for being worried.
> Who are you to judge if someone is suitable or not when >you don’t even know the outcome yet
Past roles, which is a fair thing to base expectations on.
>What I am trying to say is everyone deserve to be given a >to prove themselves and who are we to decide if someone >is good enough or not.
Agreed, but there's no reason to be upset that people are concerned, provided they express that concern in a polite way. This is the entertainment industry, smack dab in the public eye, in a career that *relies* on people to watch you and think good or ill of your ability. If you're not up to whatever their standards are, people will be upset. I don't think that gives the public free reign to be rude, but people should feel free to air their displeasure, too.
I don't know how Yoona would've done as Nodame, but once the character was allowed to settle down, I liked her (Shin Eun Kyung) so much better than how she started out, despite that not being as close to the source material. And as much as I like Ueno Juri, I couldn't stand the Japanese drama version (and Japan and Japanese and Japanese manga have been my "things" for the last 20 years).

Sorry, I don't really understand this. What's wrong with fans expressing their opinion about a project they care about? You make it sound like all the people criticizing Suzy's acting are out to get her personally. I can like Suzy on a personal level and still have issues about her acting skills.
And anyway, why should I trust in Suzy's acting skills at all? I've been waiting for an adaptation of this webtoon for nearly four years now. Sul is the voice of the series. Why does Cheese have to be the project where Suzy gets to prove herself? She's had plenty of chances. I don't think she could pull it off. Call me mean and judgmental if you want but it's my opinion. Considering she opted out, I think Suzy didn't feel ready to prove herself in midst of the (admittedly) very vocal fandom either.
Also, I for one thought Shim Eun-Kyung's Nodame improved after the first stretch. And while I had my protests about that series, it's unfair to blame her singularly for its faults (ahem, the writing and the narrative choices). And I don't see how YoonA would have made things better, lol.

I am equally relieved about this as I was about SWWTN and its ultimate casting. But honestly, I also wonder about how they could even think to offer a role like this to someone like Suzy in the first place (since it requires wayyyy more than a pretty face or cuteness, which is her sole 'ability' as an actor, so to speak). It really makes me fear they dumbed down the role of Sul to make it fit any pretty face.
Pretty much anyone they pick at this point is guaranteed to be better than her. No matter how butthurt her fans are and how strongly they insist she deserves the chance to muck up one acting project after another despite not showing any of the vaunted 'improvement' they claim.

Hmm, I think Suzy will be the perfect cast if the gender is reversed. She will perfectly pull off a rich sweet girl but slightly manipulative like Jung’s character.
I think the reason she is a bad choice is more than physical appearance. She will always gives off ‘princess’ vibe so she’s more suited in character that is rich and a bit spoiled (like in the Big).
Hong Sul is the typical candy who works part time job here and there (before meeting the-daddy-long-legs Jung) so it won’t suit her character.
I thing Sung Jae would be perfect playing Sul’s brother and Sulli would be perfect for Jooyoen or whatever girl who bullied Sul in the earlier manhwa.

The sole reason for idols to play leads in most cases is due to the high earnings that stations reap from overseas syndication rights. If you notice how many idols go over to act in China (including Choi Si Won, he was in a a terrible chinese drama; though he is now proving his chops in She was pretty). This is an entertainment industry whereby artistry probably comes secondary especially within the television sphere since advertising drives so much of the decision making. But yes, Suzy isn't great but she's still young, give her a chance.

Everyone thought Go Ara had cold princess image, and looked how she changed it with Reply 1994. If the actor/actress has enough will-power to prove him/herself and is able to forgo CF, image is the last thing he/she cares.
However, in Suzy's case, i dont think she would ever try such dramatic thing like Go Ara with all her CFs. ( To be fair, without those CFs, Suzy is nothing)
And when you said Sul is the typical candy, it proves that you havent read the webtoon yet. Sul is anything but typical candy.

I read the webtoon, thank you.
IMO, she IS the typical candy. The unfortunate girl with sad sob story. She is scraping scholarship to fund tuition (although most money goes to fund his brother in US) because his father doesn't think it worth it funding a girl's education.
In character, she is kinda similar with So Young in MDSY but more richer and less asshole father (So Young has a gambler father who took all her money).
I thought my reference to candy is the heroine comes from non rich (sometimes dirt poor) background and her life magically changes when a prince or a daddy long legs comes in.
She is not the typical DOORMAT candy although in the beginning she is quite passive and turn a bit of gangster in the end (Min Soo's arc).
The point of manwha is, the main characters are almost stereotypes like candy girl and rich prince (don't forget the protective second lead who always shows up in the perfect timing to protect the heroine from trashes such as : Yong Gon, the jerk in the academy) but the twist is the rich prince is a manipulative psycho. Sometimes I feel sorry for him but sometimes I just want to punch him in the face.
I actually enjoyed the manhwa and equally loves both male lead and the main girl though.

Poor (can't pay her tuition unless she works part time and find scholarship)+ Hard Worker (study all the time) + Always Do her best (2nd best after Jung) + Nice to others (implied by so many scenes in the manhwa) = Candy
Stay silent after being yelled at + Always receive sub par treatment but doesn't do anything about it = Doormat
Sul isn't exactly poor but his father favoritism put her in that position.

It's kind of a blindness probably because of the heat of Kpop wave , and the media pressure too. Sometimes the age counts too( I was a teenager once hahaha)

Also, if we're floating a list of potential Hong Suls (assuming that this writer and PD are competent; with the Suzy casting offer, they just made that a huge and REALLY shaky assumption), here's my contributions:
1. Go Ah-sung (wishful thinking, she's doing a movie)
2. Chun Woo-hee (everyone's fave, also busy with a movie *sigh*)
3. Kim Ji-won (versatile and has Hong Sul's slightly cat-eyed look down pat)
4. Kim Go-eun (newbie actress with just three projects under her belt but incredibly talented and more than capable of bringing Sul's uniqueness to life. She was amazing in Eun-gyo)
