Oh My Ghostess: Episode 2
by girlfriday
The second episode really brings the comedy into play, now that our wallflower heroine has been taken over by a ghostly presence with an unquenchable thirst for all things male. It’s hard to even call it innuendo when she’s just openly drooling, leering, and grabbing to her heart’s content. I guess when you’ve already died once, there’s no time like the present to live out all your carnal desires. But the best part is that the show doesn’t lose its heart amidst all the libido jokes, and this episode sets the stage for a drama that’s going to make us laugh and cry in all the right ways.

EPISODE 2 RECAP
Bong-sun has just been possessed by sassy maiden ghost Soon-ae, and dragged back to work to return the storage key she took by accident when she quit this morning. (We’ll be calling her Soon-ae as long as she’s in control of the body, though obviously everyone else thinks she’s Bong-sun.) The entire staff at Sun Restaurant gasps in unison when she speaks to Chef Sun-woo in banmal and flips him over instead of handing over the key.
Sous chef Min-soo yells at her for crossing the line even if she doesn’t work here anymore, and Soon-ae realizes that she made a mistake. When they tell her to hurry up and apologize to Chef, she wonders, “Chef? Is that his name? He doesn’t look foreign.” Heh.
Sun-woo just demands the key again, and Soon-ae digs into her pocket and finds what they were looking for. The disgruntled looks all around start to make her feel uncomfortable, and she decides it’s been long enough in this body and tries to eject… only she can’t.
A look of horror dawns on her face as she remembers the shaman unni telling her that she could get stuck if she ever possessed a host that matched her frequency perfectly, and she starts to panic that she really might be stuck in Bong-sun’s body for good.
She strains to try ejecting again, and ends up fainting right there on the floor. Sun-woo rushes back over to her and the guys all wonder if she’s really sick or something. They lay her down on top of a table, and Soon-ae comes to and realizes that she can’t just pretend to be asleep forever.
She peels her eyes open and gets a good gander at three men’s crotches right at eye level, and actually licks her lips in appreciation. LOL. She decides that this might not be such a bad arrangement after all.
Sun-woo’s sister Eun-hee bandages up the scrape on his arm and nudges him not to let Bong-sun leave like this. She thinks that Bong-sun is someone weak like her, and that they shouldn’t send her out into the world before she’s ready.
So when Soon-ae heads down to talk to him, Sun-woo is a little softer with her, especially after she ekes out a straight apology for the ninja moves. He asks if she’s asking to be let off the hook because she isn’t ready to leave, and Soon-ae just nods in agreement to everything.
He offers her one more month on probation to see if the kitchen is really what she wants to devote her life to, and Soon-ae jumps up to shake his hand. She says in her hilariously flippant way that they made up so they’re all good now, and Sun-woo backs away slowly and says she’s not quite right in the head yet.
Soon-ae dons her uniform and takes a look around the kitchen, which she notes feels strangely familiar. The others yell at her to take her station (washing dishes), and as soon as Sun-woo orders Min-soo to go check on their supplies, Min-soo tosses the job down to kitchen lackey Bong-sun.
Except Soon-ae doesn’t know the rules and just spits back that Chef told Min-soo to do it, and everyone turns to her like she just spat on them. She quickly revises her stance and goes with the “not quite right in the head” excuse and scurries off.
Soon-ae wonders what Sun-woo’s deal is and watches him tenderly tie his sister’s shoelaces, deciding that he’s maybe not as rude and terrible as he seems. But as soon as he yells at her to get back to work, she scowls: “Well he’s not a good guy.”
Soon-ae slaves over the dishes during the dinner rush and complains the whole time about how busy the place is. But when the heat causes hottie chef Joon to start lifting his shirt and showing off his abs, she stands there blatantly leering.
He asks her to move as he reaches for a towel, and she answers with a lusty smile: “I don’t wanna move.” He makes her day by leaning over her anyway and wiping his sweat in slow motion. She looks like she’s died and gone to heaven.
When Sun-woo orders her to wipe the floor, she uses a wet mop and he lights into her again, wondering if this is some kind of revenge for her. She jokes that he’d have to break a few ribs if it were revenge, leaving him speechless.
Sun-woo gets called away to the police station, where he’s informed that the angry blogger is pressing charges for assault because he pushed her out of the restaurant, and is claiming to have injuries that’ll take three weeks to heal. His brother-in-law Sung-jae comes running into the station, and the restaurant closes for the night.
Soon-ae asks if “that chef guy” beat someone up, and they all gape at her. Min-soo reminds her that all of this happened because of her, and Soon-ae quickly acts like she just forgot, all the while mindlessly caressing Joon’s hand. Hee.
The guys ask her what she’s touching, and she laughs awkwardly and says she’s just lacking for affection and sometimes fixates on men. Well that’s one way to put it. They’re so stunned that she starts babbling to try and cover up for it, but the guys can’t get over how weird she’s being.
They talk it over without her, convinced that she is Bong-sun but doesn’t seem like Bong-sun. They wonder if she’s maybe got multiple personalities, or an anger management problem where she’s been so downtrodden that it’s erupting now in a murderous rage.
They scare themselves with wild theories, and then come upon Soon-ae as she’s marveling one of the kitchen knives. She thrusts it at them and asks if a person would die if stabbed with something this sharp, and they all flee in terror.
Brother-in-law Sung-jae tries to convince Sun-woo to apologize to the bitchy blogger to make this go away, but Sun-woo refuses to play her game when he did nothing wrong.
Meanwhile Soon-ae waits until all the guys are in the showers to poke her head in and take a loooooong leisurely look. They scream at her to get out, and she takes her sweet time in a sorry-not-sorry retreat out the door.
She congratulates herself on her spot-on instincts, and when the guys come out to the locker room, she shuts Min-soo up with one pointed look down at his crotch and a sympathetic, “Be strong! Who cares about that kind of stuff, right? Fighting!” Hahahaha. Min-soo whines, “It’s because you didn’t get a good look!”
Soon-ae runs out after Joon (well that answers THAT question), even though he points out that she lives in the opposite direction. He asks outright what her deal is, and if she’s acting so strange because she decided she’d have to be totally different to stop being taken advantage of.
She says she’s done a lot of thinking about life, and suggests that it’s more a conversation to be had over a beer. Many beers later, Joon is drunk and wobbling down the street, and Soon-ae is dragging him by the wrist to try and get them into a motel room to “just rest for a bit. Just an hour! I won’t lay a finger on you!”
To her dismay, Joon insists on going home and rides off in a taxi with a drunken wave. She stomps off in frustration and sighs at Bong-sun’s reflection in a car window, cursing the fact that she got stuck in a body so homely.
Soon-ae doesn’t even know where Bong-sun lives, but thankfully she gets a call from the gosiwon landlord asking when she’s moving out. She heads home and finds Bong-sun’s depressing room filled with ghost-warding bric-a-brac and suddenly asks aloud, “What’re you looking at?” And a little child ghost scurries away. Ack, a little warning might be nice!
Sun-woo comes home in an angry rage and decides to go on the bitchy blogger’s site to leave dissenting comments under a pseudonym. He’s kind of adorable.
By morning, the news has hit the press that he attacked a patron in his restaurant, and the lunch crowd has thinned to just a few tables. Soon-ae is cluelessly cheery as she comes to work, but the entire staff ends up just standing around in the kitchen with nothing to do, and Sun-woo does his best to act like nothing’s changed and barks orders as usual.
Soon-ae gets called over to a table where a pair of rude guests complain over a pasta, and she tamps down her temper to fix the dish, mostly because she doesn’t want Sun-woo to have to deal with them.
But Sun-woo sees her throwing chili paste in the pan and tosses the whole thing in the trash, yelling at her for touching his food. She admits that she was wrong but says that she was trying to be thoughtful because the guests were saying rude things about the gangster chef who beats people.
He tells her to stay in her place instead of thinking about him, and she argues right back that he always twists everything around instead of just accepting her thoughtfulness. She’s so worked up that she says things half in banmal and then belatedly corrects it. Sun-woo is stunned speechless, and decides that she took his warning the wrong way. He bans her from the kitchen for the time being.
Eun-hee worries that Sun-woo’s making a bad situation worse for their restaurant, but he insists that it’s nice to have some time off. He’s surprised to get a call from the police station about the charges against him being dropped, and gets fired up when he learns that Mom paid off the blogger.
He storms into Mom’s office to pick a fight over her sticking her nose into his business, and she simply argues that she’s his mother. He snaps back angrily that she wasn’t a mother to him when he needed one as a child, and that he’s thirty-three now and doesn’t need a mom anymore.
She cries that she was so young that she was trying to study and make ends meet, and is trying to make up for not being a good mom now. She agrees that they can just live their separate lives now, but that lasts all of two seconds before she chases him out into the hall to hit him for being so rude to his mother.
Mom reminds him to use that talisman and he asks how much she paid the blogger, wanting to pay for it himself. But then he checks his bank account and has to ask Mom for discount.
Sun-woo meets up with his broadcast PD friend So-hyung, and he insists over and over that he’s fine and enjoys having some time off. She tells him to do her cooking survival reality show and revive his image, and this time he seems to consider it.
She takes him with her to a memorial vault where their friend Chang-kyu’s ashes are kept, and when So-hyung says that Chang-kyu wanted to see him, Sun-woo says he’s too nice and should’ve continued hating him for life. So-hyung sighs that she should’ve been good to him while he was alive, and Sun-woo falls silent.
The kitchen staff lazes around reading more stories about their chef, who’s been nicknamed Kkang Chef in the press, short for Gangster [kkang-pae] Chef. Soon-ae calls it the perfect nickname that just rolls right off the tongue, since Sun-woo has a way of being a gangster with his words.
She makes a point of asking Chef if she can go to the bathroom since she’s been ordered to check with him before doing anything, and he tells her stay away from him so that he doesn’t have to speak to her.
Min-soo tattles to Sun-woo that his rival Marco’s staff is saying that Sun-woo’s done for and can’t even be on TV anymore because his image is ruined, and immediately Sun-woo calls So-hyung (and pretends to have accidentally butt-dialed her, ha) to do her reality show. He tells the staff and asks Min-soo if he wants to come with him as his sous chef, and everyone congratulates Min-soo on his TV debut.
Shaman Unni runs all over town looking for her runaway ghost Soon-ae, and gets a ghostly warning from the powers that be to hurry up and find her. Sun-woo’s mom calls that same shaman with a recommendation from a colleague, and asks her to come see her son.
Mom gets drunk and rambles to the pojangmacha owner about her son giving her trouble, but then admits that she wasn’t around to cook him one warm meal, what with getting accidentally pregnant at nineteen and so focused on her studies, and widowed early on top of it all. She wonders with tears in her eyes how lonely Sun-woo must’ve been all by himself.
Sun-woo and Eun-hee sigh when Mom stumbles into the restaurant drunk off her rocker and calling for a bottle of wine. Sun-woo takes her home and puts her to bed, and picks up a stray dog on his way out. He tells the dog to go away because he’s not the type to feed strays.
Cut to: Sun-woo feeding the dog at the restaurant, with warnings that he won’t keep feeding him tomorrow.
Soon-ae trudges home whining about how she’s stuck in this body where “the front and the back are the same,” and curses herself for the momentary decision that landed her here. A large crowd in the neighborhood draws her attention, and she notices policeman Sung-jae standing guard as a dead body is carried out from a building.
She thinks that Sung-jae looks familiar for some reason, and wonders if maybe she seduced him once in a different body or something. She sees him covering up a little boy’s eyes as the body passes by, and swoons at the gesture from the handsome cop.
When Sung-jae heads to his usual lunch place the next day, the owner ajusshi and son are having trouble with a customer who refuses to pay for his meal. At the sight of the cops, the guy pays, and Sung-jae just pleasantly asks for the daily special and cleans a dirty cup without complaining.
Mom meets with Shaman Unni, who wants to see Sun-woo for herself and read his fortune in his face. They head over to the restaurant, but Sun-woo’s at the broadcast station for his cooking show today. Min-soo is so nervous that he forgot to bring Sun-woo’s knife and calls Bong-sun to bring it.
Shaman Unni is on her way in when Soon-ae nearly runs right into her, and she reminds herself that she’s Bong-sun now and can’t be seen. Still, she has to clutch her bell necklace to keep it from ringing as she scurries past.
Soon-ae arrives at the station with the knife and teases Sun-woo for wearing makeup for TV. Min-soo gets stuck downstairs and the security guard won’t let him back in without the name of the PD, and Min-soo digs his own grave by trying to bribe him and jump the turnstile.
With no other choice, Sun-woo goes on the show with Soon-ae as his assistant. The taping begins, and by way of introduction, Sun-woo says he’s here to show that his hands are for cooking, not violence, and then the viewer challenge is introduced: Cook a hangover soup that a mother would make for a son who’s been drinking all night after just getting his enlistment papers.
The challenge seems to set Sun-woo off-kilter from the start, likely because he has no idea what a mother would cook for a son. He starts making dried pollack soup, but with minutes left, Soon-ae notices that the rice has burnt.
He seems frozen with indecision, while his rival chef Marco is already plating his dish at a leisurely pace. Soon-ae pushes him aside and springs into action, scraping out the rice and pouring the soup into the stone rice pot. He asks what she’s doing, and she says quietly that she’s making dried pollack crispy rice soup.
Over at the family restaurant that policeman Sung-jae frequents, a man orders that very same dish from the ajusshi, who says that they don’t make it anymore. The patron is disappointed, and asks where the ajusshi’s daughter is: Did she go somewhere?
Ajusshi stammers, “Yes, yes… she went… somewhere.” Oh, saaad. Is Ajusshi Soon-ae’s dad?
The final dishes are tasted by the judges, and everyone notes Sun-woo’s simple rice dish in surprise. He looks surprised himself when he tastes it, and So-hyung congratulates him on the win after the show. She thought he’d be at a disadvantage for the challenge because he hates rice so much (his staff has complained that he doesn’t let them eat rice, let alone ever cook it).
Min-soo finally shows up and gets chewed out for missing the show, and to add insult to injury, So-hyung says that Bong-sun has to keep being his assistant because they can’t swap now. Min-soo whines that Bong-sun can’t do the heavy lifting, just as she passes by carrying all the equipment without breaking a sweat.
As Sun-woo drops them off, he tells Soon-ae to return to the kitchen tomorrow (he mutters it so begrudgingly that she has to make him repeat it), and she realizes that this is his way of saying thank you for her help on the show today.
She heads home that night feeling good about herself, and wonders how she came up with that idea in the moment—is that soup dish something she used to like?
She sees a young man lying in the street drunk and sporting a bruise on his eye, and something makes her stop and try to help him. She digs out his phone and calls “Dad,” who turns out to be Pollack Soup Ajusshi. It rings, but he doesn’t answer. Pick up the phone, Dad!
Soon-ae doesn’t know why she’s being so nice, but she can’t just leave the guy there and drags him all the way to the police station. Policeman Sung-jae recognizes him right away and calls Dad to come pick him up, and asks Soon-ae to wait because the ajusshi wants to thank her.
She swoons again at Sung-jae’s sweet disposition, and seems happy to wait around as long as she gets to stare at her cop crush. Dad comes running in to claim his son, and one look at Dad sends Soon-ae’s head spinning.
A memory comes flooding back: Dad trying to wake Little Bro in their family restaurant, and Soon-ae comes out of the kitchen to join them. Awww, they really are her family! She beats Bro with the ladle and Dad laughs.
And then another memory rushes in: Dad’s restaurant is bustling with taxi drivers, and Soon-ae runs around the kitchen trying to keep up with the orders, as she and Dad joke happily with their regular customers.
The truth dawns on Soon-ae in the present, and her eyes fill with tears as she whispers the faintest, “Father…” as she remembers all the ways he used to call her name: “Soon-ae-ya! Our Soon-ae! Soon-ae-ya, let’s eat! Soon-ae!”
COMMENTS
Agh, Park Bo-young, you can’t make me cry in Episode 2! She’s so nimble at going from laugh-out-loud sex jokes to gut-punching tears at the drop of a hat, it’s crazy. I like her as Soon-ae more than as Bong-sun because she really gets to play that whole spectrum, and I’m glad that we’re getting Soon-ae’s backstory because I expected the ghost character to be played purely for comedy. But now there’s all this heart in Soon-ae’s past, and I love the idea that maybe she’s still here as a ghost because Dad and Little Bro are her homework and need a little help to get back on their feet after losing her. There’s such a poignant sadness in the moment where she remembers Dad but can’t call out to him, made so bittersweet by the fact that their lives were once filled with so much everyday happiness.
It’s interesting on a story level to make Soon-ae the central character of our story, and not Bong-sun. And the fact that Soon-ae is trapped inside that body means that we’re likely to have her in control the whole time, whereas I expected more swapping back and forth. It’s regrettable for Bong-sun to get less development as a character, but at the moment I do find Soon-ae more layered and interesting, and will hope that there’s a way they can influence each other down the road. Maybe they can even take turns like a split-personality drama (though that’s a whole other headache that I don’t wish to repeat, thank you). It’s really only a problem when it comes to the romance, because you run the risk of the love interest falling for the secondary personality/ghost/what have you, and I want this drama to make me believe without a doubt that Sun-woo sees Bong-sun for herself. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but don’t make me regret putting my faith in you, Show.
What I like is that Sun-woo has a soft spot for Bong-sun to begin with, and that he likes her because he identifies with her and hates her for the exact same reason, because she reminds him of himself at his worst. He seems to genuinely care for her, which is a good place to start. I like that he’s prickly in a relatable insecure way—puffing himself up outwardly and pretending to be okay when he’s not, and putting on bravado to protect himself when he’s just really insecure. His mother issues run deep enough that he’s tripped up by a simple cooking challenge to imagine what a mother would cook for her son, and I like the food metaphor that he actually doesn’t know the taste of rice because he’s never had mom’s cooking. In Korean, you call a meal the same thing as “eating rice” (and similarly “cooking” is commonly referred to as “making rice” and so on), and his aversion to rice makes me think it’s his insecurity about never having had a loving home-cooked meal in his entire life. But both Bong-sun and Soon-ae know that one thing in spades, and it warms my heart to think that she’ll (they’ll?) fill that void for him.
I’m glad that there’s a mystery too, a la Arang and the Magistrate concerning Soon-ae’s amnesia and how it is that she died in the first place. It seems likely that the reason for her memory loss is something traumatic that includes a bad guy and a crime, which should add a nice urgent plot element to give Soon-ae’s journey a little more weight than Get laid, rest in peace. Not that getting laid isn’t important for her—obviously it’s the first (second and third) thing on her mind and we get buckets of hilarity for it—it’s just probably not the unresolved grudge that’s keeping her from passing to the other side. Probably. She should maybe go ahead and check that off though, yunno, just in case.

I love pretty much everything about this drama so far. The actors are great, the writing and characterization is solid, and the direction is really interesting - a lot of dramas feel like they could be filmed on the same sets painted slightly different colors, but this one makes the restaurant feel real in a way that makes me think of Sam-Soon.
Fingers crossed they don't screw up the split identity thing, but they've got a really solid start.

I immediately thought of Kim Sam Soon as well, possibly because they appear to be using the same restaurant. The location of the line has changed: in Sam Soon it was against a brick wall, and now it appears to be out near the tables, but you can't change stairwells and in the first episode there was an unmistakable shot of the metal staircase that features so prominently in MNIKSS.

Me likey too! As long as they keep the sister of chef to a bare minimum, that is. Every time I see her on my screen I get immediate jolt because of her incredibly boring performance in Warm & Cozy. Granted, her character was written pretty badly too, but the dead unexpressive eyes give me nightmares still.

The sister is played by Shin Hye Sun not Seo Yi Ahn. They look a little alike but not the same actress from Warm and Cosy

Really loving this drama! Love how they've struck a balance between the elements of humour, mystery and finding oneself. Only bit I'm actually worried about is how they're going to execute the romance component. I think we all want Chef to fall in love with Bong Sun, and I'm curious to see how the High School King of Savvy Team will handle it. Pumped for the next episode!

I’m a little torn about this episode. Overall, I liked it, but I thought the process of Soon-ae possessing Bong-sun and taking over her life happened a little too easily. She thought very briefly “oh no, I can’t get out of this body” and then just gave up and accepted it because dicks. Lol. I don’t blame her but I thought there needed to be more of a struggle. It almost felt like the introductions we got in the first episode were pointless. She felt like a totally new character to me because she adapted so quickly… I really needed to see her struggling more with being stuck in that body. We also didn’t get much of her boy craziness? Which is the entire reason she’s a ghost... I don’t know. She just settled into living Bong-sun’s life so easily that it threw me off. I also expected more slapstick. Enjoyed the dick jokes, though. :) I do love the characters and character interactions so far.

I think she'll panic over being tripped a bit later on (at least I hope so). I mean she has taken over bodies in search of men before so it might take a while for her to actually start to feel trapped.

Yes, you have a point! I guess I assumed she was a sort of hit and quit it ghost, lol. Like I thought she went into bodies just to make out with men? So it threw me off when she didn't mind living as Bong-sun. But! I just remembered the scene where she tried to get in her coworker's pants (forget his name) after drinking. So I guess she's biding her time now. They definitely have a chance to show more of her reaction later, so I look forward to it.

I liked this episode a lot more than the first, but I agree. I was also surprised as the ghost responded quickly when they called with another name, could hesitate more. And she went to work in the place of someone else like that, instead of going to deal with their mess. But I think that already in itself is carefree. It is also understood that he felt comfortable in the kitchen, when you know that in the past worked in one.

Such quick recaps, thanks again!! Boy this show is hard for me to to put my finger on - I like what I see but I am somewhat nervous about where it's heading. I too am a bit worried about this permanent possession and how it may easily limit one character from growing (even ignoring the obvious romance element).
I don't know if it's just me but does anyone get really mixed feelings with Sung-Jae? Like he's constantly shown as being perfectly good in every way but I can't shake the feeling that he's creepy (not the actor, just the character). I don't know. I get a weird feeling that he's involved in the accident/death in a bad way. Maybe not intentionally...but maybe so? You know how the guys in the back were discussing how people could suddenly have outbursts of a completely different personality? I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking lol.
I've never seen Park Bo-Young in anything, but she really doing a great job. It really does feel like Kim Seulgi jumped into her body. I'm also shallow and enjoying her lustful inclinations at the moment even though I'm sure those will die down soon.
And the mother, ugh. Her emotions and actions are all over the place. Every time she shows up I just want her to go away. And I know I'm supposed to think Chef is being unreasonable, but that woman did not deserve a settlement and I wanted him to stick it out and prove them wrong (but he didn't need to add all the rest to it).

Same worries about Sung-Jae. Why is he keen on going to Soo-ae's Father and eating there despite the dirtiness and all? Did he do something unforgivable?
I do hope he's just the first love and maybe soon-to-be husband rather than the killer. hihihihi

Come to think of it, Sung-Jae's wife is a victim of a hit-and-run accident. Coincidence?

Same thinking here. Definitely something "off" about the character. What if the accident is related to the murder (assuming it was murder), such as Soon-ae witnessed Sung-Jae in the hit-and-run and he killed her... or did something that caused her to die. Or on the flip side, the hit-and-run accident is direct result of what happened when Soon-ae died. Either way, it makes me wonder if Sung-Jae married his wife out of guilt.
I am so used to the domino-effect crimes plotline in k-dramas that it just seems naturally to assume that is what's going on!

Oh, I'm hating the mother right now too. I would NOT send her the settlement money. She wants to settle, that's her deal. She can waste her own money.
But I'm generally annoyed by that whole blogger-sues-for-assault thing. That blogger would have had no chance in court, there was NO case. Sun-woo was 100% on saying "Just because I'm a celebrity, that makes me a criminal?". He didn't do anything at all (and he needs to sue her back for slander). Although I know there are crazy people like the blogger lady and we all know that "fans" and knetizen can be completely bonkers, what bugs me about this whole scenario is that everyone just lets it happen. All the employees in the restaurant witnessed they scene. They were there, they know what happened and they just kind of sit back and watch the show. Do people not stand for each other? Does no one have a sense of justice, even if they don't like their boss personally? Same for his family, pushing him to apologise/settle with money (!!!!). How can you encourage this sort of behaviour? They are basically telling the blogger lady to pull off any stunt she likes. This time she wanted 5 million won, what will be next time?
Also not enjoying that we've got plenty hitting people (why is it okay for mom to just start slapping her son? Is that really something that you see in Korea in public all the time?) and yet again drunken scenes (which I'm generally just sick of).
I'm enjoying the drama otherwise though....

the hitting is a cultural thing. it's kind of affectionate.
about sung-jae- yes! i got the same eerie vibes from him too, from the first episode and especially this one. i feel like he was connected to soon-ae's death, probably and maybe even with his wife's accident. or maybe i've watched too many dramas. but definitely one of the two, i'm almost positive.

My friend who used to live in Korea witnessed a man hitting his wife in public, and she wanted to call the cop, yet her Korean friend urged her to just move on and forget it. Dunno whether that's a common thing...but speaks volume to what the employees did in this drama.

I'm Korean and I think culturally speaking, those two instances are different cases in Korea. The way the mom hit sun woo was, as someone mentioned above, affectionate. Like, people know slaps to the back won't really do much harm, it's just embarrassing to be caught doing it in public to a man who is 30 years old because it implies that he is still immature and child-like. I don't really think this happens very much anymore, but is added in dramas as a culturally understood characterization of a robust (?), but loving family. I think it's relatively easy to tell if a mother's intention is to actually hurt her man-child or not. A man hitting his wife, on the other hand, sounds like abuse and people are probably just not comfortable getting involved in other people's business, but as any other place, I'm sure there are people who would do the right thing and call help.

Hmm I was thinking more along the lines that maybe since she was such a regular occurrence at the police station (drunk bro and all) that he developed a crush on her. But when she was murdered and he couldn't fix that he feels guilty for not stopping it or not finding the killer.
I mean she remembered her father and her instincts are still the same, she can cook etc. I feel like her crush on him is a good sign.

It could be guilt over something, but I think he's been married for a bit and probably not looking at her that way. I definitely thing he was there at least at the crime scene if not involved in some way.
Oh, I also thought it was odd that she remembered her father but didn't seem to remember her brother?

I don't think she actually remembered her father from just seeing him.
I think it was the actual act of him trying to wake her brother which seemed to happen a lot previously which triggered her memory.
Just like the crispy rice pollack stew was something she felt very comfortable with because she made it all the time. Ditto, being in a kitchen.
She did seem to have a closer attachment to helping her brother out even though she explained it as "being a good person."
I did think similar thoughts about knowing the father but not the brother, but I think the PD did a decent job of showing it was the actual moment (instead of the faces) that triggered the memory, though I think it could have been a little clearer in that they show her seeing the father's face and not registering it, and then when he starts trying to wake the son, it registers for her.

I agree with Requiem's take – it's like she sensed them. It wasn't a visual recognition, but a feeling of familiarity – that drunken brother that she's carried home before, the father slapping the sleeping/drunk son.
The same may be happening with Sung-jae. Although she's crushing on his handsome looks, it's not the visuals, but a feeling that made her take notice.

July 5, 2015 at 8:17 AM
Some more thoughts: it will be interesting to find out whether they start recognising her by sensing her through her actions/behaviours. Obviously they can't visually recognise her since she is in another person's body, but they might start feeling her (this happened in a jdrama I watched recently, "Dream Again").
Not sure about my thoughts about Sung-jae now – maybe she did visually recognise him. I can't remember if she said "he looks" or "he seems" so familiar when she first runs into him. If she did recognise him visually (without being to remember exactly), it could be related to that at that time she was in her own body, not possessing another.

I agree with you about Sung-jae. So far the drama has shown him to be a stalwart, upstanding kind of person, but with how this drama has handled its main characters so far - showing scenes that reveal and add to their depth, especially for Soon-ae with this episode - I definitely think there is more to Sung-jae than what we've been shown so far.

I think the way they filmed the scene where the camera kind of films Sung-Jae wiping the dirt off the cup at the restaurant, but doesn't show his face, suggests something sinister about him, if not, guilt possibly?

Thank you! I was wondering when someone was going to mention the Sung-hae character and I was being a wuss and being hesitant about saying something. I think the camera shots of the character are doing a subtle foreshadowing for us and he is somehow involved with both Soon-ae's situation and his wife's accident. He truly is too goody two shoes and I am not buying the facade. Also, is the shaman possibly Bong-sun's actual grandmother? It would seem quite likely from the way they've avoided showing the grandmother when Bong-sun was talking with earlier. And really, how many shamans would be likely to be wandering around in this show? Ah, the plot thickens! Show, don't fail us because we are invested in this one!

re: shaman and the grandma
no, i don't think so. the shaman's seen bong-sun twice already, there's no way she wouldn't recognize her as her own granddaughter. the only reason why she was looking at bong-sun was because she was pretty sure she heard her bells ringing when soon-ae got away on the back of the motorcycle the first time, and because she seemed familiar/maybe heard the bells ring when she saw her at the restaurant.

You're not alone in wanting his mother to go away. I was PISSED when she stuck her obnoxious nose in and paid that b*tch a settlement she didn't deserve. What she deserved was to have her spoiled nose rubbed in her defeat. The only thing I'll say is that he should have been doing something instead of just sitting back and ignoring it. He should have spoken to reporters and given his side of the story. She came into his restaurant and had her brat running up and down all over the place and then had the nerve to cuss out one of the employees when HE knocks into her and causes HER to burn herself. Then adds insult to injury by talking crap about his sister because she's paralyzed. She deserved everything she got up until that settlement. I wonder if his stupid mother even thought that settlement is tantamount to an admission of guilt. That doesn't fix anything.

I love Soon Ae. Park Bo Young is owning this role. This is exactly how Kim Seul Gi would act. Those close ups on their bulges, thank ye for cable! I love how she's obsessed with Joon as he's my favorite character so far. Poor girl is in for a rude awakening when she finds out handsome cop is married. I aww'ed at Sung Jae covering up the little boy’s eyes.
This show is equal parts comedy and heart. I was surprised at how fast Soon Ae recovered her memories, but I'm really glad she did. I think this will ground her and make her more "human" opposed to the emotionally-detached ghost she is now. The struggle between settling her affairs before moving on to her next life and fighting to stay by Dad and Little Bro's side to take care of them. I think the real Soon Ae is in line with Bong Sun's personality, which is why they are so in sync. I just hope we don't lose the sex-crazed ghost completely because she is the best part. Thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like the character of Soon-ae and enjoy all the possession hijinks... but.... NOOOOO!!!! That talisman has to be around somewhere, right? It can eject her, right? Otherwise, either the OTP just suddenly changed by 50%, or he loves the outer shell regardless of who's at the helm. FANTASTIC options. I know episode 2 is too early to make assumptions and perhaps it's just my pent up anticipation for this drama, but for the love of Jo Jung Suk I desperately want to watch without wondering who it is we're supposed to think he's falling for. I was totally on board back when she was the catalyst for romance, I'm not sure if I'd be in for the emotional messiness of her actually BEING half the OTP. Her being dead and all. And in possession of someone else's body. Who is (was?) her own character. Who the hero seemed to connect with...

Fair point. I like your way of thinking! I only thought of it in terms of them syncing, not in terms of being able to interact later. I had been hanging all my hope on the the fact that it would be illogical to highlight the parallels between Sun Woo and Bong Sun and then make them irrelevant by swapping her out for Soon Ae. (I reaaally want to be wrong by the way, so I'll happily latch onto any evidence that points to the answer I'm looking for.)

That's a good point too. All of the explanation of Bong-sun's character really made it seem like they were setting it up for her to grow through Soon-ae (become more confident) and also connect with Sun-woo because they're so similar in many ways. Especially with him commenting on her food blog! That was so cute.

I think that was a plot device so when Soon-are finally leaves her body she'd be able to tell Bong sun what she's done. Coz it seems that Bong Sun has no consciousness while soon-ae is in her body.

This show is PERFECT!
A show that feels so right has been really few and far between in the last couple years.
She was hilarious staring at their crotch area! And the gall of her--sticking her head in the shower room just to check out their equipment! That girl is completely boy-crazy! So many puppies of her and us to be crazy over. But that's not why the show is Perfect. ????
I was very nervous when she went on tv with Chef, thinking that she'd botch the job and make him look real bad. Instead, she surprised viewers and him, by saving the day. I love it when shows surprise me pleasantly.
Ep 1 was setup. But in ep 2, things are being revealed quickly, like the Chef's history with his mom, his mom's personality and man issues, his raising his sister in mom's place. So it makes sense why he is so caring of his sister. The shawoman is also being brought on scene in a completely believable way; that's 1 million times better than when we've to go: Now that can't be.
The way So-Ae recognises her family is so deftly done. There is an economy and beauty to the reunion that speaks to the skill of the director and writer, which gives me confidence that we are in excellent hands.
Many commenters were worried about who the Chef will fall in love with, and that Soon Ae should have a love line of her own. In ep 2, I think they get their reassurance. Isn't it just Fantastic?

Because she's crushing on the police guy? I'm not sure that reassures me. She just crushes on any handsome guy really. The concern is also not so much about Soon-ae and her love line, but with the Chef – who HE sees and falls in love with.
Or where are you getting reassurance from?

Call me an optimist.
I see the writer devoting this whole ep to Soon Ae, which suggests to me that she'll be a big part of this drama. I'm not worried that she won't have a love life of her own, esp. since she crushes on any handsome guy. She isn't too picky, is she?
Seems it is Bong Sun that the Chef identifies with and feels for. He knows this version of BS is "weird". Let's relax and give the show time to flesh out various relationships.

It's just that your comment sounded like there was something absolutely definitive that was reassuring in ep. 2 but I didn't get that feeling (just like I didn't get the feel 'this is going the wrong way in terms of the romance development').

Jo Jung Suk surprised me with his body gag at the beginning of this episode. I laughed out loud when he tried to get up from the floor by trying to spring to his feet from his back and just ended up flopping around. I hadn't realized that he would be so willing to throw himself into comedy (har). I haven't watched him in too many things - but, I find it impressive that he's willing to round out the comedic moment at his own expense. Actually, I'm impressed with the acting all around and am looking forward to the episodes next week.

I'm getting very strong Master's Sun + 49 days + Arang vibes from this drama, which isn't a bad thing since I loved all 3. What I'm worried about is I'm also getting drama-that-shall-not-be-named vibes, and I'm afraid how the romance is going to pan out. I'm keeping my expectations low on that front so I won't be disappointed. Hopefully it won't happen! I'll just continue enjoying the hilarity and heart that this drama is!

Agreed and this is why I love watching Park Bo-young. The first episode was the set up and she did a great job interacting with the main male lead and the rest of restaurant crew. Her reaction is natural because she is a good listener. Watch her when she is not speaking. She is not trying to remember her next line. She is actually listening to what her co-stars are saying.
By episode 2 she totally disappeared into her character. Her new personality took over and like you said, she has Kim Seul-gi’s vocals and mannerisms down so perfectly. She doesn't just act or talk like her, she think like her too.
Man, Park Bo-young. Welcome back to drama land.

Park Bo-young and Kim Seul-gi are just slaying left and right here. I really hope this drama turns out good all the way, but right now, it's excellent and I love it.
and after all the OT praises, I'm watching My Beautiful Bride, which is also great. I don't care much about the titular beautiful bride (and Go Sung-hee really isn't a good actress so it's hard to get invested in a character who essentially feels like a trope and not a person), but Kim Mu-yeol is fantastic. I definitely care about what happens to him! And I am intrigued by the unreliable narrator feel of it when it comes to their past relationshop - like the memories showing that their so-called first meeting was not in fact their first.

The writers and PD are doing a great job at making Go Sung-hee look decent. I don't like her nor dislike her. I just don't pay much attention to her character because she sound scripted most of the time and there is no sincerity to her acting. It doesn't help that Mu-yeol is effortlessly owning every scene they are both in. If I feel anything for her it's because it's more to do with the writing than her acting.
I hope she is learning a lot from her co-stars. There is quite a few veteran actors in this show and they are fantastic.

There's also the dead person that's connected to Sun-woo's friend (the one that works in TV). I'm wondering if there's yet another connection there somehow. It can't be coincidence that they are bringing in yet another dead person. Although if I read the dates on the urn correctly, that person died longer ago, at least longer than ago than Soon-ae.
Then again, I'm not 100% certain that Soon-ae is dead. Someone ventured a guess in the ep 1 recap that perhaps she is in a coma (that being the reason why she might have been able to stop the ball).

I still don't know what to think of this one. I like it a lot and Park Bo Young is a pleasure to watch. I will have to watch a few more episodes. But I do feel like speculating though. I wonder if the accident that Sun Woo's sister got hurt in is the same one that killed Soon Ae and if that is the reason her husband feels so responsible for the Restaurant Dad. I wonder if the policeman and Soon Ae were a couple and he moved on after she died...but then again, it hasn't been three years since she passed away. It'll be interesting to see how the story unfurls.

For some reason I'm getting the feeling that there's going to be a tragic connection between Soon-Ae's death, Eun Hee's accident that made her wheelchair-bound, and policeman Sung Jae. Maybe Soon Ae had an unrequited love for Sung Jae after seeing him at Dad's restaurant all the time, knew he was married to Eun Hee and pushes Eun Hee out of the way of a truck of doom for Sung Jae's sake, but ended up dying a lovelorn virgin in the process?
As for being stuck in Bong Sun's body, I think Soon Ae will stay long enough for Chef to start treating Bong Sun with care and respect her as an assistant/sous chef, then the ghost-buster Ahjumma will give him a talisman via Mom that repels Soon Ae from Bong Sun's body. By that point, he will have started to treat Bong Sun with kindness and continue to do so to a now confused Bong Sun. Bong Sun begins to partner with him using her own recipes that give a glimpse of what he never got from Mom growing up.

Not just you, he's Soon-ae's favourite among the chef crew too! We certainly can't accuse her of bad taste...

I'm certainly enjoying that she has a Cordon crush instead of just going straight for the Chef. Plus I originally thought he was a lot younger than he was (I think because of his last role..) but I'm happy he's not. Bring on more kitchen scenes with him! I definitely literally LOLed with his scenes with her in the kitchen.

JJS has stellar comedic timing and on top of that is a master improviser (see his role in architecture 101). That scene where he is trying to get up after being thrown by Bong Sun is pure gold...I bet at least parts of that sequence are improv! Love him, loving PBY and the drama!!!

Heh, I totally saw that also.
His character was trying to act all cool by doing a flip up, and failed miserably.
I definitely cracked up when I saw that. Whoever thought of that was genius.

I like this drama so far but Bong Sun/Soon Ae swap keep bothering me. I hope the writers wont disappoint. Bong Sun must be the female lead and I am trying to hope Soon Ae in her body is only a catalyst.
I hope in next episode SA will come out of BS's body so tnat we get to see some character development of real BS.

Thanks GF for the recap.
I enjoyed this episode and like how they're showing SA in BS's body.
However, I hope they can make it a clean transition to BS when the time comes for it.
Wonder what B-in-law has been up to and if he was a factor in SA's death.

I'm happy that Park Bo Young's character is not another candy girl although she's timid.
Lets see how she grows in the coming episode with Soon Ae.

Is she a famous actress in Korea?

Yes she is! She acted mainly in movies though. Some of her more famous mpvies are Speedy Scandal (with Cha Tae Hyun) and A Werewolf Boy (with Joon Ki). You should watch them if you haven't! :)

This drama so totally has a Pasta+Master's Sun vibe thrown in, with Soon-ae as a 21st-century Arang. I love it, but I hope we'll get to see more of Bong-soon too, and of Kim Seul-gi as Soon-ae.
And I am so impressed by both Park Bo-young and Kim Seul-gi as Soon-ae, they both play her with so much heart and brazenness. Especially PBY, to the point where I end up thinking 'oh right, that's the same actress', haha.

I am halfway through ep 2 and about to bust a gut laughing.
On one hand it is funny. On the other hand the actress is so petite, sweet looking, young and so short. And you have all those tall males. I am not sure if I am laughing at the character ogling or at the innocent looking face sprouting off all these lines.
I don't know who this actress is. I wasn't familiar with the female lead in Grapevine as well. But if they are really paying the big bucks for those movie actresses- I am all for it.
The drama is even more amazing when it's acted out so well. It really makes a difference when you hire an actor vs an idol who is wooden. And then having all their fans try to justify why the viewer should love or bear with the terrible acting.

PREACH.
Park Bo-young and Go Ah-sung (the young heroine of Grapevine) are worth their weight in gold to their dramas.
The presence of actresses like them in Korean film and drama makes it even more laughable when fans of idols who continually display a total lack of acting ability, come here and try to tell us how much their idols have 'improved' or how they're 'talented'.

well, to be fair..not all idol actors are wooden and not all 'real' actors are not wooden. it's always the best to not generalize or have prejudice view on anything. good is good, bad is bad, isn't it easier to keep it that simple?

I had a thought that it seems our resident ghost is prett good at chasing away other ghosts. It really would be so much better if she gets kicked out of the body soon - PBY can see her and talk to her, and she can chase away the other ghosts so PBY can sleep and then both could have some good character arcs.
But it's unlikely she'll get kicked out that quickly when they made such an emphasis on how bad it would be if she met someone who could trap her inside them.

Anyone else think that Sung-jae was the one who killed Soon-ae? I'm not watching the show yet, just following with the recaps, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Sung-jae is not as nice as he seems. Also, this drama feels like a mash-up of Master's Sun and Pasta, since Gong Hyo-jin played the woman who could see ghosts and was tired all the time and also the kitchen assistant that everyone walked all over and was always getting yelled at by the chef.

I don't really get that feeling, or at least that he murdered her or something.
You do get the feeling that he does want to help out Soon-ae's dad, but right now I can't tell whether it's out of pity or guilt or even just as a regular decent human being.
I dunno. I don't get an evil sense out of him. Though I could totally see guilt in him, I guess.

I'm definitely suspicious that Sung-jae played a major role in Soon-ae's death. Similar to how the writer added depth to Soon-ae in today's episode when she could have easily been played merely for comedy, I think that the writer has hidden layers to Sung-jae we have not been privy to yet.

I'm enjoying this show also. I had decent hopes coming in just from the crew and actors, and so far it looks solid.
I'm also a tiny bit worried like the others that they won't develop Bong-Soon as much, and have weird romances with lead falling for a ghost possessing another's body, but I'm suspecting that they'll eventually have Soon-Ae kicked out and since Bong-Soon can see ghosts, they'll actually be able to communicate. I just hope it's not after like 5 episodes. I'm actually more curious about her than Soon-Ae.
Part of what seems to make Bong-Soon so much of a doormat seems to be fear of ghosts. Though it's interesting that she's scared of the other ghosts, but not Soon-Ae. And it's interesting that she apologized to Soon-Ae for almost running into her, but she actually doesn't run into her while she actually runs into a real person before apologizing, though that might just because she was feeling blue about resigning....
I actually was more touched by Park Bo Young's crying when she was Bong-Soon trying to act strong talking to her halmoni vs. when she was Soon-Ae remembering her father. I dunno just something didn't strike me quite right on that scene.
Overall, I'm enjoying Park Bo Young's acting. She's totally captured Kim Seul-Gi's mannerism and speech. There have been moments where I didn't quite feel it like the Soon-Ae/father crying scene, and actually, the opening sequence, I actually didn't feel like she was that tired, but the good moments have far outweighed the not as good ones.
All the actors have been pretty good, except for the mom. She's thrown me out of the story a couple of times, particularly when she gave the exposition about being a terrible mom. She didn't really sound like her character lamenting about being a bad parent. She sounded like she was narrating a story....
Among the other actors that have stood out well are Jo Jung-Seok playing a solid prickly man with a heart underneath. Does anyone else hope that the dog he adopted sticks around? and the sous-chef has been pretty awesome playing a character you'd normally hate, but he somehow makes you sort of see him as just a normal human being with his own foibles instead of just an ass.
I look forward to next week.

The dog is definitely going to stick around!
<he sous-chef has been pretty awesome playing a character you’d normally hate, but he somehow makes you sort of see him as just a normal human being with his own foibles instead of just an ass
Isn't he the only one who sort of stands up for his boss? Because although he's always complaining about Sun-woo's arrogance, he did say "But he is all that" like acknowledging that though his boss is a pain, he is a good cook. I also thought when he was tattling about Marco, it was not so much to make Sun-woo feel bad but to push him to do something that would ultimately benefit his boss. Because just telling him to do the TV would not have worked...
That said, I find the TV show a bit silly though. Like it's a fashionable thing now to have drama characters go on TV and it happens also easily – more plot device than being realistic IMO.

I'm enjoying this drama but the ending of this episode made me nervous. I really liked that sung jae was married to the sister and they seemed happy and there did not seem to be a love triangle. but now I'm wondering if soon-ae was cops first love who died unexpectedly... (this is a kdrama after all, first loves and car accidents go hand in hand) and the fact he goes to the restaurant shows perhaps he hasn't gotten over it? And now soon ae and him may have something between them? Which would be so uncomfortable to watch. :/ I'm glad they reveleaed who the ghost was so soon though and I am interested to see where they will take it.
