Lee Jun-ki the scholar walks nights, breaks hearts
by girlfriday
It looks like Lee Jun-ki’s gonna be leaving a trail of broken hearts and dead bodies in his wake, not necessarily in that order. Posters and a second teaser have been released for MBC’s fantasy sageuk Scholar Who Walks the Night, highlighting Lee Jun-ki’s tortured life as a vampire caught between love and his insatiable thirst for blood. Let the brooding commence!
The Joseon-era supernatural drama is about the love between a vampire scholar (Lee Jun-ki) and a young woman who dresses as a man to sell books (Lee Yubi), and the mystery surrounding an evil vampire (Lee Soo-hyuk) who caused the death of the hero’s first love (Kim So-eun). Palace intrigue involves two princes who are connected to the central mystery, a cameo by Lee Hyun-woo in the past and Changmin in the present.
The posters feature the taglines: “I live by drinking human blood… I am a vampire,” “Don’t come near me, ever…” and “Protect the world, and save your love.” The second teaser opens with Lee Jun-ki saying, “I smell a fragrance I can’t withstand,” as he comes across Lee Yubi in the street. She sighs over the beautiful scholar she met, saying that she’d like to kiss him, as we see him kissing first love Kim So-eun instead.
The sweet romance takes a dark turn as he stabs Lee Yubi and drinks Kim So-eun’s blood, as he narrates, “I crave the blood of the one I love… and end up sinking my teeth into her.” He looks tortured at what he’s done, but it’s intercut with him looking tempted by Lee Yubi in the present. He narrates, “That child is hiding something from me.” That the he is a she?
It ends with Lee Yubi asking why he’s looking at her that way, and he leans in close as he answers, “Because you’re pretty.” Goddammit, why do you have to be so swoony? If your romances always end in gory murder, you might wanna curb the smooth-talkin’. Just a thought.
Scholar Who Walks the Night premieres next Wednesday, July 8.

This is either going to be really good, or make me spend 20 hours cringing from the cheesiness of it all. I can totally get into her having a huge crush on the pretty scholar who flirts with her, because in every frame where she's looking directly at Lee Jun-ki, she's pretty much **hearteyes**
Nice change of pace from the usual Joseon crossdresser Candy type, I must say (those tend to go in denial about their feelings for way longer).

I'm kind of expecting some cheesiness based on the people behind this drama and the manwha itself.
I think he started flirting with her after all the books that he was buried under were cleared and he found her on top of him (oopsy!).
I think cliched and overused plots can be a good thing if the writers know how to make it work.

I'm excited and scared at the same time - the cast is fantastic, the story sounds really interesting, but the writer's previous credentials inspire no one with any confidence.
But on the other hand, I trust Lee Jun-ki not to choose a dud sageuk.
And Lee Yubi in that couple poster has exactly the expression I would have if I was face to face with oppa, forget about being face to face with oppa dressed as a hot vampire! So on that count, well done, young lady. Looks like she starts off the drama with a whopping huge crush on him, too.

even if it turns out cheesy, I will have to defend Teachers´ honor. Dilemma... cause I tend to speak my mind...
the writer at least has source material and doesn´t make up things from thin air. at least in the beginning. is it a finished manhwa though?
on one other hand, Coffee Prince was a huge hit...on the other hand, it had just as cheesy a premise, saved by the natural and honest acting.
on the OTHER hand, The <moon That embraces the sun PD - yuck. famous for not using the talents at hand and I am afraid at least Kim So Eun and maybe even Lee Soo Hyuk will be underused.
but look at his EYES. they contain so much - pain, yearning, hope, despaire, irony, innocence, guilt...

From what I've heard, she wasn't the main writer of Coffee Prince, and her only other full length drama was the disastrous idol vehicle Paradise Ranch. Moon/Sun PD at least shoots things prettily, if Empress Ki is anything to go by. I hope the writing/directing don't end up making a total airhead/Candy out of Yubi's character (I fear that just based on her demeanour in the manhwa alone)
If this drama fails, it is NOT going to be because oppa didn't try.

Disagree whole-heartedly.
CP's script/dialogue was superior, as was the character development (even for the supporting characters which is rare).
One would be hard-pressed to find a K-romcom with a better script/dialogue.

Ahh, a new writer ??
Now, I'm worried :( ...
It should be quite enjoyable, coz I trust Junki's ability and charm to make a show alive. But, the rest is up to the writer to create a good and interesting plot. I hope she already has a concept on to where the story is going, and is creative enough to satisfy the audience without giving up the logic and the main theme.

CP was just about the 1st of the whole "cross-dressing"/being mistaken for the other gender genre and it wasn't just the acting bu the cast, the writing/dialogue was superb (tho mostly done by the writer Lee Jung-ah and not Jang Hyun-joo).

I like LJK and adore SMA - bit "Arang" (aside from the 1st 4-5 eps) was a complete dud.
Finally finished it after a couple of years hiatus and regretted it (basically nothing happened until the "big secret" which wasn't so much of a secret and was a complete, farcical letdown).
Don't want to say that it was "Dr. Jin" bad - but at least Dr. Jin was "bad" in the sense that it was at least good for some laughs.
Based on the writer and PD - give this a 50/50 shot.

Arang was definitely a good drama. The only problem it may have had was that it became a bit slow around ep 17. I thought the mystery aspect of the drama was really good. They showed the story of Arang's death and the fairy's involvement in it gradually.
Dr. Jin was ridiculous. I watched it just to see Lee Bum Soo and his acting. I had really liked him in PM&I and was checking out his other dramas. You cannot compare such a bad drama to Arang, which I'm sure a lot of people will agree on "good" at least.

Arang still had a carefully plotted central mystery (which was actually a mystery) and unlike the utter stupidity of Gu Family Book, Dr Jin, Night Watchman etc, its fantasy world was a well fleshed out and presented one, with actual rules (very important if you are doing fantasy).
It may not be to everyone's taste, but to compare it to Dr Jin is a bit......did we even watch the same drama?

Aside from the 1st 5-6 eps - which was when Arang was fun, after that, all she seemed to do was mope.
And there was this huge build-up as to "mystery", but it really wasn't a mystery side (the fact that the "evil" was a fallen heaven fairy who had possessed the Magistrate's mother) except to Arang and the Magistrate - who took FOREVER to find that out.
And really, getting rid of the fallen fairy was soooo anti-climatic.
Basically, the 3 "baddies" - the fallen fairy, the old geezer Lord and the "adopted" son/lackey were a total bore.
The last 12 eps was just going round and round in circles as to when the leads would finally discover the "big secret."
Even the scenes w/ the Jade Emperor and Yama became boring since they just had the same talk over and over again.
There was no real mystery and the fantasy elements weren't well done and hence weren't that interesting (something like "Joseon X-Files" had mystery and well done fantastical elements) - and this is coming from someone who looks mystery and fantasy and even better yet - a mystery/fantasy fusion.
As for "Dr. Jin" - yes, it had worse writing and worse acting (tho aside from Mr. Hand-towel, the rest of the cast was pretty good), but it was so bad, it was actually (inadvertently) funny.
"Arang", otoh, became a total bore after around ep 5-6, which is why I lost interest about half-way thru it and regret having gone back to see the rest (the best part about "Arang" was the shaman and the manservant, which shouldn't be the case when "Arang" starred SMA, but even she couldn't save the dullness that her character turned into).

whether you like it or not is your opinion, but the fact is, the fantasy elements in Arang had rules attached and weren't just pulled out of the writer's behind.
And the question of why Arang wasn't going to heaven as soon as she uncovered the involvement of the Magistrate's mother in her death was also the result of some interesting godly wordplay. I personally thought it was very well presented and rewarded the viewer for paying attention, but if you preferred Dr Jin that's your call.

And much as I love our two leads, I am far more intrigued by the supporting characters - like what is going on with Lee Soo-hyuk and Kim So-eun? Or even Changmin, for that matter.
And I hope Present-Day Kim So-eun gets cooler things to do in the drama than mope about her past love. I find the whole enslaved-by-an-evil-vampire/in-love-with-the- Crown-Prince part very interesting.

I'm thinking he's (Lee Soo Hyuk) gonna take Kim So Eun under his wing and make her his apprentice in evil. Or that's the vibe I've always been getting from them. Also, she being Jun Ki's ex-lover and Lee being the causer of her death that's bound to get under his skin, haha.
No idea about Changmin, though. He's the character they seem to show the least. I guess he'll walk around doing princely things...

I thought he does that with the gisaeng though, and Kim So-eun's character/s is a new one who's under his control in another way.
The drama's relationship chart points at her and her father being servants of the evil vamp but I thought that was more about blackmail, since she looks terrified in that glimpse of her with Bad Vamp and her present-day character is supposedly in unrequited love with the Crown Prince.

I didn't even realize there was another character (the gisaeng) in this. I forgot all about her. I'm sure LSH's character has her under some kind of manipulation and it's probably not much different from person to person. I imagine being the Big Bad, you have to have a little dirt on everyone. They do seem to be the closer duo, though so I'm wondering what that dirt is.

Let's drop all pretense at analyzing this upcoming drama, ladies. We only want pretty, and hot ... a little evil, and some heartaches, please. Just watching the two faces of main male leads delivers all that. Not too crazy (I am looking at you, Night Watchmen) script and OK directing will deliver on this one. With all those boring new "actors" out there lately, Lee jun-ki doesn't even have to act to make me watch the show. Forget the period costumes. He can show up with no makeup in his PJ's and do nothing much on the screen, still better than many others' who are, actually, trying to act in earnest.

I'm also excited but have it in the back of my mind that this might suck and be another huge mistake. I sincerely hope not. The story is not really different but for Kdrama it is. I love the main leads in other works they have done and hopefully they have great chemistry here. Warm and Cozy ends today and I'm ready to move on to this drama. The only thing that worries me is that this will end up confusing and terribly written like "The Night Watchmen Journal". I had super high hopes for that one and it failed miserably.
I'am so excited to see our leading ladies in their attire and looking so cool. Especially Kim So Eun. She hasn't started in anything big or has been a huge character other than Boys Before Flowers and even then she wasn't that important. Also Lee Yubi looks the part better in my opinion. She looks more tomboyish and can seem to pull it off a bit better.
I'am ready for you Scholar Who Walks the Night. I will be here next week and hopefully have some good things to say about the first and second episodes.

Flower boys were a thing of beauty back then. Heck, they even wore make-up during the 3 Kingdom era. Glad someone else gets it lol.
I can accept the cross dressing here because it's taken from the manwha and young ladies in those days weren't allowed to go out freely especially at night to sell books. So in order to make a living she had to do it.

this drama has many flower boys and girls. LYB is cute though, even i still cannot see him as a man.. hehe. shes still like a kid to me. maybe because shes too cute. LJK as usual, pretty in hanbok. and now with vampire eyes, aww very hot.
Wanna see more of pretty KSE, hope she will wear many beautiful hanbok in this drama, im here because of KSE, so although this drama will not be as good as we expected, i will stay until the end, provided KSE's character given fair opportunity..

Am I the only one who can't wrap my head around LJK and LYB being a couple? They look like siblings -_- Sorry, I guess it's because of her role in Innocent Man (Nice Guy) :P But that's also what I get with LJK and KSE? Which is weird because LJK still looks like he hasn't aged since My Girl, so I don't know why I get an older-brother-only feel from him towards his leading women. Hehehehe :D
I hope my impression will change when I try watching the drama! Fingers crossed that this will capture my love so that I'll have a complete weekly lineup... I Remember You for Mon-Tues, hopefully this one for Wed-Thurs, (rest day for Fri...or if anyone can suggest a good Fri-Sat drama, I'll look into it), and The Time I've Loved You & House of Bluebird for Sat-Sun ♪♪

dear, i also think LJk and LYB look more as a sibling, probably because of their baby face? KSE and LJK may look better as a couple. but i thnk lets not think so much about their pairing, coz it is nothing that we can do. hehe..
btw you can try My Love Eun Dong for Friday n Saturday slot. and y not u try Mask also? hihi

I am going to recommend "My Beautiful Bride" for Saturday/Sun. Kim Moo-Yul is so worth it. I love it when film actors return to drama land. They are much more mature and refined. It's beautiful to watch. The writing and directing is pretty solid so far but I've only seen 2 eps. I was hoping someone here would recap it.

But Arang was good, no matter if it suited your taste or not. I don't know about this one. Not getting a good feeling about it.
I'll give it a try though. For Junki :)

Arang started off strong then it got too draggy and kinda boring. I was having hard time to finish that drama... Hope this one not gonna be like that.
