Kwak Shi-yang follows Ghostess with lead in daily drama
by javabeans
girlfriday: Yay, Kwak Shi-yang has been cast as the lead in a drama! I always like to see talented newcomers rising, and for him it’s really very quick—his debut was only a year ago and he’s already had a few leads now.
javabeans: Before you get too excited, KBS’s My Love Enemy IS a daily, so there’s that.
girlfriday: Maybe this’ll be the daily I watch! What’s it about?
javabeans: Nothing, by which I mean everything: It’s “people facing hate and conflict, learning to forgive and the real meaning of love and happiness” and stuff.
girlfriday: So… basically nothing.
javabeans: Yeah, maybe I’ll skip that one. But I’m still glad for his career, because as adorable as he is being a background figure of Oh My Ghostess (as Cordon Bleu-trained Joon), I kind of want him to do more acting.
girlfriday: He is criminally underused in Ghostess! I mean, he gets to be occasionally cute, but he could do so much more!
javabeans: It’s weird to see him so sidelined right after he was the leading man of Persevere, Gu Hae-ra (not to mention the indie film Night Flight that was his debut), but you can’t say Ghostess is a bad role for him, because it’s so red-hot popular right now that it’s getting him a lot of exposure.
girlfriday: That’s not really the kind of exposure I was hoping for. More abs!
javabeans: I think that would be too distracting, and then we’d forget what we were talking about. Wait, what were we talking about?
girlfriday: Okay, but really, as hot as he is, it’s because he’s a good actor that we’ve taken notice in everything he’s done. He totally made me cry in Feel-Good Day as the lonely son of Deadbeat Dad who just wanted to be part of a family.
javabeans: And frankly, if he hadn’t been the one playing Se-jong in Persevere, Gu Hae-ra, I might have hated his character, or at least wanted to punch him in aggravation. As it was, he was frustratingly noble and broody, but he made me care, and root for him to come around.
girlfriday: And in Ghostess, I just want him to be more of a threat in the love triangle, and do cute things to make Jo Jung-seok crazy mad with jealousy.
javabeans: I know, he’s totally poised to be that heart-tugging second lead and all he’s done is throw her a few looks! Why aren’t they doing more with him?
girlfriday: Why doesn’t he ever let Bong-sun/Soon-ae go home with him?
javabeans: I know, right? If he’s so willing to lend her money, be her confidante, or be helpful, why can’t she just resolve her grudge with him? See now I’m talking like I don’t love Chef, which I totally do, but this is the crisis of allegiance I want to feel from the show!
girlfriday: Yes! There should be fanwars! Polite, respectful ones, where nobody shouts or calls each other names, but fanwars nonetheless. Otherwise your second lead is being wasted.
javabeans: It’s a good thing I have a robust imagination to keep me busy.
girlfriday: You and Soon-ae both.
javabeans: It’s what keeps us going.

Ha! Kwak ShiYang must be DB's new puppy, seeing how he got an entire conversation just by landing a 'daily'-leading-man role!

It's not so much that being in a daily drama is a bad thing as much as it is that daily dramas tend to be too much of a time commitment to watch for most people, since they are typically 100+ episodes. Plus, daily dramas tend to be a bit more ridiculous plot-wise and they are of a different quality (and lower production value) - not that there aren't some amazing daily dramas, because there are (Ugly Alert being my personal favorite) - but typically daily dramas are where actors will start with leading roles before they move on into leading roles in prime-time shows (there are some actors that almost always do daily shows, but it's usually more of a stepping stone).

Ugly Alert was awesome! And the "real" second lead in Ghostess, Im Joo-Hwan, knocked it out of the park in that drama with another favorite of mine, Kang So-Ra, as the OTP.
BTW, Im Joo-Hwan is doing a pretty good job in Ghostess. Definitely getting the sinister vibes from him. Particularly, since he seems so personable at times and so evil at other times.
I wonder when he'll get another lead role. Loved him in Ugly Alert and Tamra, The Island.
On Kwak Shi-Yang. Eh, maybe I'm not seeing it, but I actually wasn't really wowed by him in the two episodes of Persevere that I saw, and he's been fine here, but I haven't really seen anything that makes me think he's awesome acting-wise. Of course, that's good, because his character really isn't supposed to be scene-stealing here.
I also wonder how much personal attraction has to do with loving an actor's "acting" as I'm not attracted to him....

He really is!!
Generally, daily dramas are overdramatic pieces of crap that make no sense. There are occasional good ones out there, but most of them are unwatchable imo. They're just made because they still almost automatically generate decent to good ratings (now a rarity in dramaland), no matter how bad they are.

I do feel bad as well that he's so under-used in Oh My Ghostess! So cute, but moar plez.
However, I do think he was supposed to be that second lead, but then the writing shifted gears and focused more on Soon-ae x Bong-sun x Chef. Which I love, btw.
At this point though, I hope he gets more time. Like the cute beats with the box carrying and the drunken aegyo-ing(?) but not the annoying kind like where So-hyung looks headed.

"And in Ghostess, I just want him to be more of a threat in the love triangle, and do cute things to make Jo Jung-seok crazy mad with jealousy."
This is basically how I feel about this.
Anyway, I saw him in Gu Hae-ra but completely forgot he was in Feel-Good Day/Glorious Day! I totally agree, he stands out and not just because he's cute but because I can see the acting potential...It's too bad I've never finished a daily drama (I got close with Ugly Alert but couldn't keep up, unfortunately). Next time!

I was also hoping they would use him more in Ghostess, he is so handsome and sweet to her in a way that chef isn't. At this rate anything he does won't even matter because she's so into Sun Woo.
Side note:not to be a pervert but I couldn't help but notice in the last picture of him in the towel there is a noticeable *Ahem* bulge. haha * saves photo * I'm just gonna keep that one.....

Oh I just saw him for the first time ever in Night Flight a few days ago and thought he was pretty good. Daily dramas aren't perfect but I guess he can take all the exposure he can get, baby steps

It's not that dailies are bad... Well some are terrible ( Princess Aurora!!) but some do make you feel good ( can't think of any names!!). The problem with a daily it's that is too long ( 100 plus episodes) & most follow a patter. I often joke to my friends that I watch ep 1-60 to get to know the couple ( or the side characters, often the side characters are cuter then the otp, less drama!) .. Take a break & comeback for the last 20 episodes & still manage to not missed much.

yay for Cordon chef! I most likely won't watch the daily drama but it's very good exposure for him. Here's hoping he will be able to shine even more.

Baby steps, baby steps... CORDON~! Love seeing him in Ghostess but ARGH, drama was never serious about him even trying to get the girl... It's okay, Im still loving the show and I'm keeping an eye on this guy—for many reasons. ??? actually saw him in Night Flight the other day and I'm all for him and Lee Joon-jae reuniting in another (more sweet, less bitter) project. Please?

And somehow no word about Choi Yoon-young, a phenomenal young actress... who never gets the chance to shine and gets stuck in daily productions that will only be a waste of her talents.
This industry and its cheerleaders, really! Just because female actresses normally don't sport abs and have broody shower scenes doesn't mean they're no less worthy of recognition!
(Granted, I'll be forced to watch this because Choi Yoon-young! And Kim Won-yong is a decent director, as shown by their previous team-up, "My Dear Cat." Kwak Shi-yang is promising but he's not someone with Choi's pull. Lee Seon-hee of "Thorn Birds" and "TV Novel: Land of Gold" is a bigger question mark, not to mention that flimsy premise.)

I agree with this.
I'd really like to see more cheerleading of actresses and actors who aren't hot, but sadly enough it seems like a lot of the community is focused on the external than the internal.
I mean we haven't seen any cheerleading of actors like Kim Dae-myung (Misaeng's Kim Dong-shik). Of course, actors like him don't get the lead roles because they don't "fit the appeal that the community wants in its leads."
I thought he did just as good a job in Misaeng as his teammates, and yet we barely hear a whisper about him, and hear less about him than the other mains in Misaeng, who granted did a bang up job also.
It's just really sad that you have to have a certain looks, choco-abs, or a dreamy lead character before you're considered hot property. Or nailed so many roles that people realize how good you are (usually actresses).
What works of Choi Yoon-Young would you recommend? I'd like to see her if she's a good up-and-coming actress.

I liked Kim Dae-myung in "Misaeng" as well. :(
Choi Yoon-young won a KBS award for headlining "My Dear Cat," helmed by the same director as this new soap opera; I also liked her in drama special "Like a Fairy Tale." I recall some buzz over her small roles in "The Baker King" and "My Daughter Seo-young."

Lol jb, the full conversation is filled with screecaps of him nekkid. You like him that much? ?
I LOVED him in GHR and was shipping him until the end with HR and when that happened I was on the ninth cloud. KSY deserves main roles, he's so good at it. I love Kang Se Jong and Joon a.k.a Cordon Soo much and he's a really good actor.
More please, with so many nekkid scenes..... Just to make you two happy.... And like Britt mentioned, that bulge pic... Yummmm.... ?
...... Will I be a horny ghost too? ?

I did not know he is already a lead before but he definitely caught my attention when i saw him with that "headband" as a chef in Oh My Ghost. He definitely has something and he is cute indeed :)
I agree that he should be given more exposure in OMG as a 3rd wheel. With that height and cutie face, JJS can be all insecure hahaha
