Kang Dong-won in talks to headline fantasy movie
by girlfriday
I do love Kang Don-won (Dugeun Dugeun My Life) best in fantasy/sci-fi films (okay, so I love him any which way he comes) — he just has that weird ethereal beauty that makes it so easy to believe he’s a magical creature with superhuman powers. He’s currently in talks to star in a new fantasy project called Hidden Time, in which he’ll play a young boy who goes into a mysterious cave one day and comes back fully grown.
The movie will be the commercial film debut from indie director Uhm Tae-hwa (INGtoogi: The Battle of Surpluses, also the award-winning short film Forest). It’s about a group of kids who enter a cave and mysteriously disappear without a trace. Only one girl survives and returns alone, and then a short time later, one of the boys who vanished comes back, but as a fully grown man.
Clearly that thing’s a wormhole of some sort (you should really just consider yourself lucky if it doesn’t send you to Joseon), though we’re not told whether Kang Dong-won’s character is still the same young boy on the inside in a grown man’s body, or if he grew up in some alternate universe and found his way back. Either case makes for an interesting setup, especially if they cast a strong young actress opposite him. Someone like Kim Sae-ron seems obvious, but really, why wouldn’t you get her to co-star?
Hidden Time is still casting and plans to start shooting later this year. Lucky for us, in the meantime Kang Dong-won is slated to star in the revenge thriller Untold Story of a Prosecutor opposite Hwang Jung-min, and the horror movie Black Priests with Kim Yoon-seok.

mmm, my other elf prince oppa (#1 elf prince oppa is Lee Jun-ki). Sounds like an interesting premise, if the script and casting line up right.
I wouldn't mind if the wormhole did send him back to Joseon times though, it'd be like the reverse of Woochi.

yeah I think he's openly said he doesn't want to do dramas, we can only dream.

he said that he needs time to learn and understand his character before acting. Thus, movie is better for him as he can't just read the script and act in the minute (which is a normal thing with drama shooting style)

He was in Country Princess (17 eps), and he was great in that.
He doesn't give himself enough credit.
Or, he doesn't want to work that hard. ;)

Depends how old the girl is, I'm nominating Kim So-hyun. Jin Ji-hee is cool too.

Man, we waited a while for the army service and projects after it, but he sure is making up for all that. Three films, all sound interesting and different. Heck yes, darling!

I really appreciate that this site has a soft spot for Kang Dong Won. As a non-Korean speaking fan (and since he avoids dramas) it's hard to know what's up with him. Thanks for keeping us informed!

I am his biggest fan. Someone once commented on this blog that ahjummas don't dig him. Not true. This ajhumma digs him a lot! He only did two dramas in his life ( and no one remembers them) and quite a few good movies. He knows his own acting skills best. So I guess we won't enjoy gazing upon his unearthly dreamy face for episode after episode any time soon.

I checked, seems he did three dramas. I did see 1% of Anything (no wonder he ran to the film world after that!)... but as equally atrocious as Country Princess sounds, it's got Kang Dong-won AND Bae Doona. I might have to give it a try.

It wasn't atrocious at all. It was funny and sad and evil and uplifting (not in that order!). All the actors were awesome in it. It hooks you right from the very first moment. Bae Doona was fantastic in it. Her evil sister, Kim Yoo Mi, also. Kang Dong Won shines in it. The mother, Kim Hae Sook will have you crying your eyes out. And Shin Sung Woo sings in it! What more do you need?!

I understand he loves doing movies, which is perfectly fine since it means getting to see his handsome face on a giant screen, but any chance he can do a romantic comedy at some point? All his movies in recent years have all been so dark and i want oppa all fluffy and romantic once in awhile.

If I remember well, he said he dislikes the romance genre, so I do not think he'll go for that. Might try it, who knows, but I doubt it would be romantic comedy again. N

When I see the headline, jaw literally dropped, then I see his picture, *gasp*. I'll be happily shallow if it's him.

As long as he NEVER does anything like Haunters again. Even my beautiful Go Soo couldn't save that stinker.

I would have watched this movie on the premise alone. But for Kang Dong-Won to star in it, too? YES PLEASE. I seriously haven't seen a movie of his that I didn't like. I trust his choices in films, so I definitely won't miss this.
