Who Are You–School 2015: Episode 13

It’s interesting to see the interaction between the twins and the differences that distinguish them. Their attitudes and rationales define their interactions, and the surrounding characters can notice the difference. With the twins reunited, we’re finally given some answers and details about Eun-byul’s disappearance. Having realized the power of truth, Eun-byul and Teacher Kim both commit to disclosing the reason for Soo-in’s death. Even with a flawed system and corrupt leadership, sometimes all it takes is one person’s integrity to peel away the lies.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Eun-byul walks in, and Mom walks back in shock. Mom raises her shaking hands to her daughter’s face and then scolds her for her absence. Eun-byul tells Mom that it’s so nice to see her again and they embrace, tears falling incessantly.

Their heartfelt reunion is cut short when Eun-bi drops her book in shock and calls out to her sister. Eun-byul smiles back and greets her twin.

Eun-bi asks her sister what she’s been doing during this time. Eun-byul turns to Mom and says that she’s been staying at Hope Orphanage, where they first met. She knew that the child Mom first met was Eun-bi, and she couldn’t live with the guilt. She thought she could make things right by switching now.

We flashback to the Tongyeong class trip. Eun-byul stands at a corner and sees Eun-bi walk right past her. She follows Eun-bi and watches her get bullied by So-young, who taunts and slaps her repeatedly. Eun-byul narrates that she couldn’t step up or greet Eun-bi because she felt that everything was her fault. She compares this bystander moment to when she ignored a dying Soo-in.

Eun-byul follows Eun-bi to the bridge and jumps into the water after her. She saves Eun-bi from drowning, pulling her out of the water and onto the shore. She calls out frantically to Eun-bi and runs to find help. At the hospital, Eun-byul overhears the nurses talk about Eun-bi having woken up but with no memory.

As we see Eun-byul leaving Mom’s scarf with a sleeping Eun-bi, she narrates that she felt like she needed to experience the misfortunes of Eun-bi and Soo-in before making things right. Then she corrects herself, “Actually, I may have been looking for an excuse to evade confrontation with Soo-in’s death.”

Back in the present, Eun-byul admits to Mom that she’s been having a difficult time ever since Soo-in died. She was scared because she could only think of everything she’s done wrong. Then, she saw the post on the school’s website about Soo-in. “I realized that not taking out a thorn only worsens the wound.”

Mom apologizes for not taking the time to understand Eun-byul’s hardships, and Eun-bi watches sympathetically. Eun-bi tells her sister that she’s been wanting to do so much with her, and Eun-byul agrees to do it all. They smile in relief, happy to be all together at last.

So-young’s father visits Director Gong, who thanks him for taking care of the Soo-in scandal. He also congratulates Prosecutor Kang in advance for his political nomination. Tae-gwang (with a sharp new haircut) watches their interaction and recognizes Prosecutor Kang as So-young’s father.

Continuing with the conversation, Director Gong says that he cannot take any requests for political funding, since the school foundation’s money is not his personal money. Director Gong tries to negotiate: He will cover up So-young’s bully scandal for Prosecutor Kang’s political ambitions, and Prosecutor Kang will overlook Soo-in’s publicized scandal with the school.

But Prosecutor Kang has the upper hand. He shows Director Gong the legal documents outlining the investigation of Soo-in’s death and notes the discrepancies in the time of death. The legal document and obituaries record different times — the real time of death, if publicized, would reveal the school’s ignorance toward Soo-in.

Prosecutor Kang leaves with a smug smile, and Director Gong follows. Tae-gwang sneaks into the room, skims through the documents, and takes pictures on his phone.

In their room, Eun-bi and Eun-byul stare at each other, weirded out that they look exactly the same. Getting into bed, Eun-bi thanks her sister for saving her and for coming back alive. Then she requests that Eun-byul return to school; she wants to return to living as Eun-bi and prove that she can live fully as herself so that Eun-byul need not feel guilty.

Eun-byul nods in agreement and says that she’ll face her fears at school. She needs to do things before it’s too late. She knows that resolving Soo-in’s death won’t be easy, but she’s ready to face the truth.

Taking a break from his morning workout, Yi-an takes out the swimming medal that Eun-bi gave him and thinks back to her encouraging words. He begins to text her that he began rehabilitation treatment, but he remembers her promise: She won’t bother him once he starts treatment. He decides not to send her the update and continues on his run.

Walking to school, Eun-byul spots Song-joo and Shi-jin, and she happily greets them. She’s missed them, and they joke around that their friendship is so tight knit that she would miss them overnight.

A classmate tells Song-joo and Shi-jin that they overheard their teachers talking about Eun-byul’s transfer. They doubt that the rumor is true, but So-young confirms this rumor. She mockingly laments Eun-byul’s departure and teases them with a goodbye gift.

Eun-byul enters the room, and So-young walks to the front of the classroom to announce her big surprise: Lee Eun-bi has been playing the role of Go Eun-byul this whole time.

Eun-byul smiles and tells her that she’s wrong. She won’t be transferring, and she is Go Eun-byul. So-young waves the envelope with the handwriting test, claiming she has proof, but Eun-byul doesn’t waver. She confidently tells her that she can write and even get a fingerprint test to prove her identity. Then she turns the attention to So-young, asking what she did to her sister.

Pushing her backwards, Eun-byul accuses her of all the misconduct — most strikingly her unapologetic attitude towards Eun-bi’s death. So-young raises her hand to hit her, but Eun-byul blocks it and raises her own hand. So-young closes her eyes and flinches back. Her classmates are taken aback, but Eun-byul stops midair.

Trembling with anger, she drops her hand and tells So-young that she won’t sink so low as to respond to violence with violence. She returns to her seat, and her classmates respond with admiration. Tae-gwang enters the class, and So-young looks at him with contempt. The only person to notice Tae-gwang’s new hair is his archenemy, Ki-tae, who mocks him for changing his hair after being rejected by Shi-jin. That earns him a smack on the head.

Eun-byul enters Director Gong’s office to address her transfer issue. She notes that it’s rare for the director to directly force a transfer and refuses to transfer out of the school. He tries to assert his authority in the decision, but Eun-byul tells him that she found no reason to leave this school and walks out.

During lunch, Tae-gwang sits next to Eun-byul, much to her distaste. Her friends recount the moment in the classroom and commend Eun-byul for stepping up to So-young. Tae-gwang looks at Eun-byul curiously, wondering if this is the same Eun-bi he’s known.

Before Eun-byul leaves, he tells her to come to the roof. She glares at him with annoyance and leaves. Tae-gwang waits on the roof and messages Eun-bi, but no one shows up.

He finds Eun-byul in the hallway and asks if she’s okay after So-young bothered her. Eun-byul nonchalantly replies that she’s fine, and Tae-gwang interprets her confidence as a front. He jokingly pokes her forehead back, and she responds by smacking his head. HA, the look of confusion on his face is priceless.

Tae-gwang mind starts to race and he carefully examines Eun-byul’s face. He asks why she’s so different, almost like the Go Eun –. Then he stops and his face falls, realizing that this is the real Go Eun-byul. She smiles back and greets him as Eun-byul.

Confused as ever, Tae-gwang asks for an explanation. Where is Eun-bi? He demands to know where she is, and his urgency surprises Eun-byul. He runs out of school and to Eun-bi’s home, where he yells for Eun-bi.

But she’s not home. She’s on her way to Tongyeong with Mom to change official documents about her death. Mom still struggles to call Eun-bi by her real name, but Eun-bi assures her that they’ll take it slowly. Mom tells her that they should forget the pain in their past and live happily together, now the three of them.

Yi-an gets updates on his rehabilitation progress. He’s progressing well, and the doctor encourages him to continue working hard for recovery.

The vice principal reminds Teacher Ahn about a new English support teacher joining their faculty, and she confirms that she’s been getting updates about the teacher’s arrival. He then summons Teacher Jung to talk privately. He’s figured out that Teacher Jung is Soo-in’s older sister and accuses her of posting the message about Soo-in on the school’s online forum. She rejects his accusations, but the connection between her sister’s death and the reason for entering this school seem too obvious.

Teacher Jung walks out of the office, followed by Teacher Kim. He believes that she didn’t post the message because he was the one who wrote it. Oh, interesting. Teacher Kim promises to help her keep the job, but she shakes her head. She’s getting fired because she’s Soo-in’s sister, not because of the online sabotage. Teacher Kim promises to do his best to get justice for Soo-in, as Teacher Jung leaves dispirited.

Eun-bi arrives at Love’s House and tells Mom that she’ll enter alone. When she enters the room, Ra-jin notices her and begins to cry. The children all rush to Eun-bi to give her a hug, and one of the boys tells her that he wrote a letter everyday wishing that Eun-bi would come back.

Then, Ra-jin apologizes. She thinks that Eun-bi left them because they’ve been bad and promises her unni that they’ll behave from now on. They beg that she stay with them. Eun-bi cries with guilt and apologizes profusely.

In the car, Eun-bi tells Mom that she’ll be staying at Love’s House to take care of things. Mom seems hesitant, but once Eun-bi promises to return home, she agrees to let Eun-bi stay for a couple days.

Eun-bi waves goodbye to Mom, and when she turns around, she finds none other than Tae-gwang. Upon seeing Eun-bi, he scolds her for leaving without saying goodbye. She assures him that she won’t be gone forever, and their conversation is interrupted by Eun-bi’s trio of kids. They hold up their toys threateningly at Tae-gwang, accusing him of yelling at Eun-bi. He doesn’t take them seriously until they refuse to back down. Sensing their loyalty, he hides behind Eun-bi. Hehe.

Tae-gwang eats under the children’s watch (more like glares). Eun-bi tells him to eat quickly and head back home for school tomorrow. He arrogantly says that he never really attended school regularly, which earns him a glare from Eun-bi.

Eun-bi orders the children to head to bed, and they listen obediently. She asks if they’ve brushed their teeth, and Seung-min swiftly turns his head and covers his mouth, as if that would fool Eun-bi. She orders the other two to go right to bed and tells Seung-min to brush his teeth. The children do as told, and Tae-gwang admires Eun-bi thriving in her element.

Eun-bi tells Tae-gwang that he’ll miss the last bus if he doesn’t eat quickly, and he replies with a mischievous smile. Don’t get too giddy, the children will come after you.

Outside, Tae-gwang asks what Eun-bi will do now. She’s not sure — torn between her two homes — but she knows that whatever decision she makes will be hers, not someone else’s. Tae-gwang accepts that answer and reminds her to tell him where she goes before disappearing.

As he leaves, Eun-bi calls out to him to thank him for everything. “Thank you for letting me be myself, for calling my name, and making me smile. And I’m sorry that I can’t be that person for you.”

Tae-gwang stops her there. Then, she walks towards him and offers out her hand as a goodbye gesture. He considers it but slaps her hand away. Looking at his watch, he notifies her that he just missed the last bus and walks back towards the house. Tae-gwang says that he won’t give up until Eun-bi stops apologizing and asks if he should also brush his teeth. Hee, I love cheeky Tae-gwang.

Yi-an and Eun-byul meet, and he tells her about his rehabilitation treatment. She didn’t know that he was injured and scolds him for not taking care of himself. Bewildered by her response, he asks why she’s acting so strangely. Eun-byul begins to explain their argument during the Tongyeong class trip, and that puts Yi-an over the edge.

He grabs Eun-byul’s shoulder and asks what’s going on. She apologizes and says that she’ll behave until he recovers. Yi-an calls out her name, and Eun-byul confirms that it’s her. He’s baffled and rightfully so, but Eun-byul asks him to understand.

Yi-an looks too hurt to understand and accuses Eun-byul of not thinking about his feelings. “Have you ever imagined how I would feel when I discovered that you died? Or when you suddenly came back like this? You probably never thought about my feelings.”

Eun-byul seems offended that he would think this way, but his anger has built up to its tipping point. It’s always this way with Eun-byul. He blames his excessive worry for getting angry and tells her that he’s overjoyed that she’s back alive. But he can’t welcome her back with warm smile, especially after all he’s been through.

At school, Eun-byul sees Teacher Kim brooding on the roof and approaches him. She tells him that her memory has returned and that she wants to give Soo-in a proper apology. Before she lost her memory, she dreaded every day of school. “Ever since the day I discovered Soo-in last year, she’s been following me. At school, on the streets, at home, she was there. I feared that my classmates would look at me like they looked at Soo-in. No matter how much I regret, I won’t be able to return to that moment, but I want to reveal the truth.”

Teacher Kim apologizes for his shortcomings that resulted in Eun-byul’s suffering, and he promises to make things right. Later that day, Teacher Kim stands in front of the police station and resolves to report the truth.

Eun-bi wakes up to Tae-gwang yelling at her to get up. She walks outside and sees him playing soccer with the children. He drags her into the group to play, and they enjoy a carefree morning together.

Yi-an looks out the window and thinks back to Eun-bi confession about concealing the truth. Eun-byul approaches him and asks about his injury. He vaguely says that it was from an accident and asks where Eun-bi went. She explains that her sister went back to Tongyeong, and they’re currently waiting for her decision on whether or not to return.

Eun-byul asks Yi-an how Eun-bi seemed to hold up at school, and So-young interjects, having eavesdropped on their conversation. She tells Eun-byul that Eun-bi had loyal supportive friends here and clears up the confusion about who’s who, since it seemed out of character for Eun-bi to step up for herself.

So-young then clarifies the reason for Yi-an’s injury. He ditched a swim meet and got into an accident while running back to school to defend Eun-bi. She turns to Yi-an and asks with mocking curiosity: So who do you really like? Go Eun-byul or Lee Eun-bi?

COMMENTS

Finally having both twins in the picture illuminates the different charms of Eun-bi and Eun-byul. We see the range in acting with Kim So-hyun and her talent in creating these distinct characters simultaneously. Eun-bi, while more meek and unassuming, gives off a warm energy when she interacts with others. She’s the kind soul, selfless and giving to the point where she forgets about herself. On the other hand, Eun-byul definitely seems the opposite — irritable and selfish. But she exudes confidence in a manner that shields her from any insult or threat. Her flaw also comes from her confidence, in that she fears vulnerability. She tends to avoid confrontation and remains private in her pain. That was what led her to escape home, and it’s probably what’s burning the bridge between her and Yi-an.

I’m slightly frustrated with Yi-an’s character development. I missed the part where this final question that So-young proposes is actually a question. I’ve always been convinced that Yi-an likes Eun-byul. He’s a loyal friend, and he’s been warming up to Eun-bi, but I’m still set on Yi-an with Eun-byul. Confusion and wavering may be part of the process, since Eun-bi is the reason for his injury and also the reason for his decision to start recovery. But I was under the impression that this ship had already sailed. There’s something precious about the shared memories between Yi-an and Eun-byul that cannot be replaced, and it’s their relationship that would grow from this experience. Eun-byul is definitely prickly and selfish, but Yi-an seems to be the only one to care about what’s behind her irritable behaviors. She just needs to meet him halfway.

Although I can see Eun-bi really thriving Love’s House, I want her to return to school to confront So-young as herself. She’s been able to fight off So-young under the guise of Eun-byul, but, as rewarding as that has been, seeing Eun-bi step up for herself would be such a winning moment. I enjoyed So-young getting taste of her own medicine, thanks to Eun-byul’s fearless and vengeful spirit. But I would find it much more satisfying to see Eun-bi stand up to So-young, fearless and confident in her established support system.

Tae-gwang wins all around in this episode. His resilience makes me forget that he was rejected by Eun-bi. Wait, was he rejected? See, I don’t even remember! His undying loyalty for Eun-bi may seem one-sided, but I don’t think that’s the case. His loyalty is just an added bonus to the friendship that they share because what they both fundamentally needed was a friend. Someone who can look past the rebellion and silence to recognize pain. I think they both found that in each other. And while I totally ship these two, their friendship as it is now is a delightful sight.

OMG! Yes! I completely agree with your thoughts on the episode. Completely shipping taekwang and eunbi! Both of them are vulnerable within and it is only visible to them and the other. Sungjae is doing such a great job in this role! Cant wait to see him and So hyun in other roles in the future!

I think for the first time ever I completely understand Answer 1994. My ship sank, and it made me hate the show. I see other viewers fervently supporting another ship here too, and I totally get it. But what I also realized is that Love isn't about who we think deserves it the most, or who's unwavering, or who puts you first. It's about who we feel something for.

I think I can understand Eun Bi's falling for Yi An. He was the first example of friendship to her, granted he thought she was Eun Byul, and so did she. But you can't take that development or connection away. And yes he's loyal to Eun Byul. But what is wrong with Eun Bi showing Yi An what it means to be loved unconditionally and without constant road bumps due to personality.

TG's devotion came after their initial connection. Even though I think the writer is leaning towards giving fans the couple they want as end game, I don't think the writer needs to do that. In fact, I find it a little pushy on TG's side that he fails to accept that Eun Bi doesn't see him that way. That kiss was unacceptable, and if viewers weren't so devoted to TG, they would be calling for his head.

Anyways, it's been a great ride so far. Well written, and beautifully acted. Writers and actors, Fighting!

I think the same way. Especially this line, "Love isn't about who we think deserves it the most, or who's unwavering, or who puts you first. It's about who we feel something for." Exactly what I wanted to say.

And I definitely agree that although YA had thought that EB was EBy for a long time, you can't take that development or connection away. How easy is it to forget all those "moments" that happened when you find out the truth? It's not easy, because ultimately the development/connection was between YA/EB.

I also find TK a bit pushy although it's not as if he severely broke any boundaries until the end of episode 14. I understand that he wants to wait for EB to return his feelings but he's not acting about it in the best way, brushing off her rejection a few times, and of course, what happened at the end of episode 14.

PS. I was so sad about my ship sinking in R94 too. I think I can finally understand why as well haha.

>he thought she was Eun Byul, and so did she.

Honestly people forget that, that she thought she was Eun Byul and it seriously broke her to realize she had to leave him. She was not always lying and pretending. Those moments were real between the two. And Eun Bi never tried to be Eun Byul. Not really. We see what Eun Byul is like and even at her best trying to go against SY, she's nothing like her sister. She was called something different, but she was still Eun Bi.

Everything else, I agree. The cheek is was over the line considering how often he's been told she's not interested.

i was gonna post a reply about why i understood why tae kwang did what he did at the end of ep 14 but then i just realised that, that might have been eun bi's first and it wasnt with the guy she wanted it to be or how she wanted it, so he has taken that first away from her forever

KIM SO HYUN is definitely up there with Nina Dobrev, playing two characters that share the same face is pretty difficult, but not since nina dobrev has an actress managed to separate her characters by a simple gesture or phrase.

and again the reviewer has been looking at the love-story-line with taebi colored glasses, its been obvious that yi-an has been developing feelings for eun bi, so its not such a surprise that he is questioning his feelings for both girls, and obviously he isnt aware of it yet, which is why he hasnt gone running after eun bi yet.

@blue whoa yes!!! I mentioned the same thing too at comment 47 but no one replied so I thought I was the only one thinking this. So glad to see you saw this too! KSH is so talented and her roles her reminds me exactly of Nina Dobrev's Elena/Katherine! :D

Not to mention the same thing with Katherine and Eunbuyl having curly hair. While Eunbi/Elena prefers straight hair. Is there a thing with curly = sexy/fierce?? While straight hair = innocent/sweet? Lol!

didn't see your original comment. i think curls just add a little more character, and they represent someone who doesn't play by the rules...straight hair is more controlled and proper.

i loved the scene in the bedroom when you saw the twins really seem different in the way the behaved and spoke. eun byul was the older and wiser twin and eun bi the starstruck little sister.

kinda reminds me of katherine and elena in the restaurant when elena took katherine's shoes and tried to imitate the way katherine spoke and just couldnt manage it

You should watch Orphan Black if you haven't yet. Tatiana Maslany plays five different characters with completely opposing personalities in a frighteningly convincing manner.

with the whole twin switch, yi-an got to see the contrast between the real eun byul and the fantasy eun byul he has made up. also he experienced how it felt when the girl you liked, liked you back just as much. and to go back to the way things used to be between him and eun byul after experiencing the whole young love thing with eunbi/byul is kinda hard. couple that with eun byul's disregard for how her actions affect others sometimes...

and to the people calling eun byul selfish i think you are going a little too far, she isnt selfish, she is just so scared to seem weak that she prefers to do things on her own. and add her confidence and headstrong-ness and she makes her decisions without taking other people's emotions into consideration.

<she makes her decisions without taking other people’s emotions into consideration

that's what we call selfish.

And: she pretended to be dead, for weeks on end. That's an extreme decision to not take into consideration the feelings of her mother, her life-long best friend and her school girlfriends. Her pride (fear to seem weak) doesn't cut it – sorry, but I'm not sure I could be close friends again with a person who plays with my feelings in such a way.

but the way she sees it is that she is sparing them her pain. that they wouldnt be that affected and the only person to suffer through it all was her. she thinks she is doing them a favor plus with eun bi/byul around they wouldnt miss her that much.

this is a girl who has never felt like she deserved the life she was living. in her mind she stole the life she had from her sister and she still went and f-ed it up.

and to her seeming weak is a real fear for her, its the reason she abandoned the other dead girl

The fact that there's justification doesn't stop it from being a selfish act. What she did was wrong and hurtful on a number of levels.

And I'm saying this as someone who rather likes her character for bringing some much needed fire into the show. I only tuned in again because she came back.

I don't see Eun-Bi and Yi-An together... because HE always thought she is Eun-Byul and he always had this crush on her. While Tae-Gwang found out pretty fast that Eun-Byul is actually Eun-Bi and therefore their moments were the most honest on this show.

But I fear the writers won't give Tae-Gwang his happy ending even though he DESERVES it. He has been through a lot and Eun-Bi was always there for him. I would feel betrayed if they suddenly play the "oh look! Eun-Bi and Yi-An... perfect couple"-card in the end. Where does this leave Eun-Byul?

I would understand if Yi-An is now seeing the difference between the girl he fell in love with - Eun-Byul - and the girl who played her role: Eun-Bi. But I rather see an open ending than a Eun-Bi/Yi-An couple. The ideal and more realistic couple in the end is Eun-Bi and Tae-Gwang while Eun-Byul and Yi-An would've to work things out before they can even approach a romantic rls.

But I have already watched episode 14 and oh boy I see another reaction coming... D: Please, dear show makers, give us Eun-Bi/Tae-Gwang!!

I'm wondering how Korean viewers see it: are they more on Yi-An's or Tae-Gwang's side?

actually yi-an has known about eunbi for more than half the show so all their interactions from that point have been real.

yi-an is young, young people fall in love a million times before they find the one, eun byul was his first love it doesnt mean she will be his only love, he is also eun bi's first love and whether or not they end up together now doesnt mean they will be together after the end credits

it would kinda be unrealistic for eun bi to all of a sudden be in love with tae kwang in episode 15 and 16 when in 13 and 14 even knowing his feelings for her she only saw him as a friend.

i cant believe that people shipping taebi still think there is a logical way they can still end up together.

eun bi has always liked yi-an and he has just realised his feelings for her, so logical thing is for them to get together, after taekwang acts like a friend and explains eun bi's to a jealous yi-an

Honestly, I don't get why people are so proud of this lol. Like obviously the writer will change the ending to the couple netizens want instead of the couple that make sense (considering EB does not like TK)? How is that good? Plus the writer is still playing both sides instead of just sticking to a couple and running with it. It's terrible to give in to the audience.

Because that's how it works. Producers (or the tv station whatever) care about one thing and that's the ratings. If a drama gets high ratings it's considered successful. That's the whole point of live-shoot after all. The fact that so many viewers are into that couple shows that it actually quite makes sense. People don't start shipping a couple from the first episode, it happens as the drama and characters' relationship progress. 2 episodes left are quite enough to make TK-EB possible. She already knows he's in love with her and he even hugged her, but she doesn't avoid him and is still pretty comfortable around him. Because she also must be liking his presence. I can very well see that she starts feeling something for him too.

I would prefer the writer finish the show with a funny open ending. The sisters can act like each other which confuses the hell out of the guys and the sisters walk away giggling while the guys scratch their heads still not knowing which is which then they chase after the twin begging. It's too exhausting figuring out who ends up with who. I already get enough of that with The Producers. LOL

<Eun-bi was always there for him

No, she wasn't. Quite the contrary. She spent one evening with him early on in the drama when he wanted to be alone, and then the rest of drama she walked away (bus stop), didn't call him, never asked how he was doing and had no sense of that his world was falling apart. (I'm not blaming her for this – she had other worries.)

<Where does this leave Eun-Byul?

Umm, she's going to go on and live her life and get another boyfriend? Like the rich chaebol she meets at uni? Or someone she runs into at music festival? Or the guy at her first part time job? Like, life goes on???

How Eunbi couldn't see Taekwang's troubles was really frustrating but now I kinda understand her. Either she was indeed preoccupied with her own problems or she just cannot sense others' troubles unless they're obvious. Ep 14 does prove it.

that bus stop encounter everyone keeps bringing up is not fair to say whether or not she was a good friend, yes he had things he wanted to talk about but he went about it the wrong way, he knew she was on a date and still he kept calling and showed up into interrupt her evening and created a very uncomfortable situation for her. what was she to do in that situation, but had he called her sometime after her date and asked to meet or waited till the next day to talk about it then im sure she would have been more than happy to be there for him.

Why is it unfair? It's one of several instances where Eun-bi showed no interest in Tae-kwang and that show that his love is unrequited. It's not a judgment of her. They don't have to be friends just because Tae-kwang has supported her and would like them to be friends.

It might have been an uncomfortable situation for her, but she could have called him later on. She didn't – presumably because she didn't pick up on him being upset at all or she was too occupied with her own issues to concern herself with it. Which makes a lot of sense, but that's why I would call – at best – casual friends, and why I'm not shipping them because it's clearly a one-sided thing for Tae-kwang.

it was one instant, actually and her reaction was in direct reply to a situation he created.

also she had no sense of his home situation so she could never accurately judge his agency. and i thing their relationship runs a little deeper than causal friends, apart from yi-an, he is her best friend and that is more clearly shown in episode 14.

0

You know, she had her own issues to deal with during that whole bus stop thing. She was with YA and wanted to talk to him about something important. I don't get why she HAD to stop and drop everything because he needed her. Is she his mother or something? The things people expect out of Eun Bi are too much for a casual friend. It's not her fault he decided to involve himself so much in her life.

She didn't have to stop and drop everything. That's why I'm saying she isn't his friend. Which is perfectly fine. Please note above I said: "I'm not blaming her for this. She had other worries."

I'm challenging Jillia's claim that Eun-bi and Tae-kwang are destined for each other because Eun-bi was always there for him. They are not, because, as you say, they are no more than casual friends.

When have I ever said that Eun-Bi and Tae-Gwang are "destined" for eachother? lol Stop putting words in my mouth.

Shipping is a delicate thing and not necessarily the most important thing for this show as Eun-Bi and Eun-Byul are dealing with their own problems.

But then again shipping is also a very subjective thing. I know some people think Yi-An and Eun-Bi would be more realistic - others (like me) think it's Tae-Gwang and Eun-Bi.

That's all I was saying. It's MY subjective opinion and is based on my feelings. There was even a time when I thought Yi-An and Eun-Bi could work for me. And I'm not saying that Yi-An isn't genuinely interested in Eun-Bi now - the fact that he wanted to give her his first (?) medal is really cute. But it doesn't work for me anymore.

And like I said I would prefer an open ending but like others said we won't get it because the producers are going down with whatever works for the viewers. Which is a shame!

But in the end this is just a tv show. So please people calm down! lol It's just shipping - the world won't stop moving if the "wrong" shipper dream comes true. :)

In this drama TK gained Eun Bi as friend, his dad back, & many friends (eunbyul's friends became his in the process, even Yi An)

while poor Yi An lost a lot of things in this drama : his bestfriend (or so he thought) n swimming. And if he was to lose Eun Bi?? Omg i cant T.T

after watching Eun Byul in action, i realize how much more interesting she is than Eun Bi and I kinda wish that Eun Bi was the one that disappeared and Eun Byul was the one that lost her memory and had to take her place. It'd be interesting to see the foster sister be the one who realized that she had a twin first and send her gifts even though Eun Byul's life is so much better. Now that's all I think about when I watch the drama

The one thing that bothered me about the Soo In's case is, yeah, the school was at fault, but where were the parents?

I mean, she died in class, okay, but she was found at night, i think around 8, so none of her family checked on her? If they did, the school would be the first place to search so Soo In would have been found much earlier.

So where were her parents?

It's less plot holes and more just weak unbelievable writing. They had a good build up but the payoff isn't there. The mystery was overblown and the character reactions it it were unrealistic. Also the main premise is pretty unbelievable. I'm assuming that since you read the comments you know the overall spoilers (if not don't continue to read), but having the twin be alive and just letting this all happens is just...ugh. I honestly think right now that Eun Byul is a pretty awful person. I don't care how bad your year was, how could you let your mother think you were dead?! Parents' lives are ruined by things like that. And that's not even counting all the people in both girls' lives who were also affected. It's nauseating.

actually eun byul only decides to run away after learning about eun bi's memory loss, she thought that, that was her opportunity to make things right. and all her mom and friends would suffer was eun bi's memory loss, but they would have had their eun byul still. i dont think she took in the fact that eun bi might regain her memories into consideration

Perhaps, perhaps not. Eun Bi still also had a life with people in it who cared about her and then believed she was dead. It's an incredibly selfish move regardless of whether or not she regains her memories. And obviously EB would never be the same girl so it will effect all of the relationships she's formed.

Eunbi had just attempted to commit suicide and Eun Byul had seen her bullying...from her viewpoint she probably wanted to get her out her life quickly and switching places was efficient to give her time to think AND save Eunbi

It is mean to the people who cared about Eunbi but they aren't Eun Byul's priority

0

Seeing her try and commit suicide does not mean there's an excuse for wiping out all rationality. She felt bad for her sister for supposedly taking her place and leading the better place. Do you seriously think if someone did this in real life it would be at all rational or not hurt the ones they love? Not only is the smartest girl in class apparently not even considering that a girl with memory loss could get her memories back but she's not caring how it effects everyone else in her life. Eub Bi could never be Eun Byul in full. All those memories and bonds with people, all her knowledge of how to help the people in her life, that's all gone.

I think people are far into the characters to really even look at the plot. I've said it in earlier threads before we even knew for sure that she wasn't dead that if she came back there is pretty much nothing that could excuse what she did.

0

@4D I agree with you.

There might be some sort of argument on her thinking towards "saving" Eun-bi in the way she did (except, as you say, it ignores that Eun-bi was likely to get her memories back at some point and that Eun-bi could never replace Eun-byul) but it just makes no sense with regards to her mother and her life-long best friend – with regards to them, pretending to be dead is cruel and selfish to the maximum. It could only cause them pain (since they both very obviously loved her), regardless of whether she ever reappeared or not.

The whole scenario of Eun-byul's disappearance is far-fetched and unrealistic. Sadly, this is why I was hoping she would actually be dead, rather than this twist of her being alive.

0

not sure if my other comment got posted so i will try to retype it

@alua you act as if the concept of a child running away from is unrealistic or foreign....

eun byul didnt just see eunbi lying in a hospital bed and think "you know what would be cool....", she has been wanting to escape her life for almost a year before then, the situation just presented with an out in which she thought everyone involved would benefit or at least hurt less.

most plot catalyst hardly ever make complete sense when applied to the real world you just have to try and understand the character's rationalizing/motivation in that moment. eun byul was driven by guilt and she thought this was her chance to return to her sister the life that should have been her's and at the sometime punish herself for what she did to soo-in

0

@4D you are right nothing excuses what she did and this is why you had the bridge scene with yi-an when he calls her out for not thinking of anyone else when she made her decision. her mom couldnt really call her out on it because she is a mom and all she can think about is that her baby is alive.

Bullying is a problem in high schools especially but I disagree with the message the drama is giving that one person can step in and "save" someone from rough bullies. When there's a gang of bullies you may be putting your life on the line. And that's why I really can't stand Soo-In's sister and her revenge tactics. Eun-byul stepping in would not have guaranteed her sister would not be bullied again. And why should another teen put her life on the line for another? Befriending is different, but to expects teens to act in place of authorities is asking too much.
And for the writers to put blame on Eun-byul in this way is the wrong message. (She blames herself, too, along with the teacher who also wasn't directly responsible for her death. Cover-up, maybe, but responsible for the death, no.)

actually thats not the shows massage, all the show is saying is that sometimes being a friend is all someone needs of you. and they clearly dont want people to put their life on the line for others look at what happened to eun bi when she did that.

again soo-in sister didnt go after eun byul because she blamed her for her sister's death but more because she felt she was responsible for soo-in's death but more because of the unfairness of her death.

also soo-in's sister was acting in grief and this show has shown over and over again that grief and extreme guilt dont breed rational actions

I wonder if EB was introduced to YA as Eby's twin sister from the beginning, YA would fall for EB? It's a hypercritical question for sure but I wonder,,,,.

The viewers can not tell if EBy has a romantic feeling for YA or not... let EBy observe the last scene of Eps 14 from a distance, so we can tell how Eby feels about YA.

most probably not, YA's feelings for eunbi were born out of his feelings for eunbyul. it facilitated the connection between him and eun bi.

I want to point out something that changed things for me. Before, when the drama started I wasn't particularly swayed towards one ship or another. I liked all the main characters equally and I was more into the drama for the "mystery" parts of it.

However, as the characters started to develop there were turning points for me with each character that made me root for them or just plain give up on them because they were so bland and one-dimensional.

For Yi Anh, the moment he could have won me over was when he discovered Eun Byol was dead and went to visit her at the cemetery. Why didn't the actor at least shed a couple tears? The "supposed" love of his childhood and adolescence died... his best friend of 10 years was gone and to make matters more "real" the promised golden medal that he "gave to her" was just sitting there next to her "ashes"

Lesser things have made stronger characters cry in the past. He should have been kneeling, crying, even wailing in pain. And all he did was lean against the glass.
He just longingly, angrily stares. That is his range of acting in this drama.

Whereas Sung Jae who plays Tae Kwang has shown a whole range of feelings throughout the story that have made me relate to him a lot more.

I'm a newbie to all these actors (except KSH, whom I watched in Moon Embraces the Sun) I didn't started this show with any particular bias towards one lead or the other. It was the acting that changed things for me. And I believe it was the acting too that made the writer/s give more intense, meaningful scenes to "the second lead" than they would normally do in other dramas.

That is my two cents on this matter.

you speak as if people react to things the same. yi-an has never been one to make a big scene, all his major reactions have been subtle and internal. to compare yi-an to tae kwang is a little unfair as they are two different characters.

think about the way in which they both professed their love for eun bi/byul - yi-an did it as a casual chat between friends not putting much pressure on her while taekwang did the whole big speech

when they made great gestures of affection - yi-an leaves his medal at her front gate expecting nothing in return, tae kwang does the whole sentimental rooftop thing and goes on about how to him it didnt matter who she was

first time they both called her by her real name
yi-an does it in a text as a goodbye and to show that he holds no ill will towards her, taekwang does the romantic kidnapping thing and the heart crushing "couldnt i be the one person to call you by your real name"...

its just who they are.

i agree that YA does not need to be cry at that moment. However, the fact that he touches Ebi's photo at Eby's memorial speaks a lot. It gives mix signal to the viewers whether he mourns for his Eby's death, or that he cant meet his new crush Ebi anymore.

The other thing about YA is that he does not care much for his bff Eby's death as much as Ebi's moving ( this is not NHJ's fault, but the director and writers)

Overall, the blandness of YA is caused by 50% of bad writing and 50% of bad acting

Seconding the EB10 love, this drama got 50% more interesting when she finally turned up and became a part of the story in the present. Yes, she's prickly, selfish and callous, but she's also brave, fiercely loyal to those she loves, and eaten up by guilt for having an easy life compared to her sister. That scene with So-young in the classroom had me cheering - her smackdown of her sister's bully was more effective than ten episodes of the boys smouldering at So-young about it.

And major kudos to Kim So-hyun, who at not quite 16 is a more accomplished actress than several people twice her age. It's astonishing, the ease with which she plays the two sisters as such distinct people. Just the gaze alone can tell you which is which, but it's amazing how even Eun-bi impersonating Eun-byul is so different from the actual Eun-byul, that takes some doing.

(and oh god the scene with Tae-kwang in the orphanage is so cute...)

is it just me who likes taekwang and eunbyul together? not romantically but just their dynamics. maybe because they both have such strong, callous personalities that their bickering is gold. and i love how they both totally dont care for each other lol.

I am so over people calling suicide selfish. Do you know why people try to kill themselves? because they're in so much pain (the fact that it's not physical does not make it less valid) that death is literally the only way they can think of to escape from it. Because they feel they have no other options, that the people around them won't or can't help them and that it'll be easier for everyone if they were just gone. When you're suicidal you don't think in any kind of rational way, you're just trying to make the pain stop.
Don't put it on the same level as someone pretending to be dead while knowing full well the pain it will cause to their loved ones.

No.

However when people think about committing suicide, they are incapable of rational thinking. These people need professional helps.
When people think about pretending death, they are capable of rational thinking. Thus it s unfair to judge people in these two situations in the same scale.

You know, I think there are some parallels between the Eun Bi/TK relationship and the Eun Byul/YA one. Both boys seem to give more than they receive to each girl and although no one forces their actions, they suffer for it.

I really appreciated Yi An's reaction to Eun Byul coming back and I like the fact that he's questioning things and thinking before acting. It's these moments that make me like his character. I wish he had more of them, so that I could feel more attached to him.

As for Tae Kwang, he's a bit more complicated because of how much romantic and platonic feelings are intertwined. I cannot forget that he started out as a consistent, reliable, and observant friend to Eun Bi even when she didn't ask for it or wasn't particularly welcoming. She still did lean on him and take his advice more than once. It makes it sort of hard to define their friendship because it seems casual on her side while it's obviously deeper for him because she is the only person that he feels connected to this show. It's important to take this into consideration when analyzing his actions.

For example, I don't think him running to her hometown was him pushing his feelings onto her. I'd take the argument that he's pushing his friendship or companionship on her when it's clear she wants him to go though. I just can't criticize that when I was fine, and even applauded, the same behavior earlier in the season (and I'm not referring to episode 14 in this comment because this is a recap for 13). I don't know what other examples people have because I didn't watch last weeks episodes and I have no plans to.

Tae Kwang is my favorite character (because the actor is charismatic and because he's pretty well rounded), but while I initially shipped him with Eun Bi, I don't think I would accept that endgame anymore. Her feelings are clear and it would feel very contrived. I do hope that she becomes a real friend to him though or that he finds someone to depend on because he needs it.

As for the other three. The only way I can see Eun Byul and Yi An working is if there's more give and take. Eun Byul has to be more considerate of his, and everyone else's, feelings. Same goes for if they just go on being friends (I don't care either way). It's unfair to have such an even relationship and I hope all their relationships find some much needed balance.

Could the overlords maybe set up a dummy recap thread for popular shows when they come out then just spice the actual recap in later when it is written ???? Then the 14ers could could post about 14 without clashing the 13ers. Please??

Then again, 14 has been out for over a day -- why would anyone who cares enough to read and post here not have seen 14 yet ?

I guess, the reason why most of us fell for Tae Kwang was because of how the writer/s made his character and the moments he had with Eun Bi. With that character and those kind of moments, I would really fall for a guy. That's why I don't get it when it seems that Eun Bi would end up with Yian. If that's the plan of the writer/s, they should have limited the moments Tae Kwang and Eun bi shared with each other so that we'll not hope for nothing. :(

A while ago, I remembered the story of Boys over flowers where the girl first fell for the second lead but eventually ended up with Gu Jun Pyo...

this ep was satisfying..

frankly speaking i was kind of sad that eun-byul came back at this "time" when eun-bi and yi-an sort of get out of the denial and slowly entering acceptance stage (though she was already sort of revealed being "alive" in the previous few ep.. anyway, drama story wise, this is the best time she comes back "alive")

the part where i was waiting for yi-an to realise that eun-byul didnt die was killing me (only showed up when the ep nearly ended somemore).. but then, i guess i would feel sad for eun-bi at the same time too.. seems like he definitely had a thing for the eun-bi now too..

would be a nice touch if yi-an would save her contact as her real name eun-bi since things arent that tense anymore between them and he sort of accepted that identity (not like anyone would see thru ur phone contacts and let the secret out of the bag) but i like that he didnt want to tell her that he started rehab so that she would keep pestering him..

so-young part was nice when she was being pushed back by the real eun-byul.. no violence to violence!! that was nice (both really play their char very well haha) ok she's the "bad guy", so bad scene naturally go to her, but i really "like" the push she's pushing yi-an (of course is drama, if not base on his char, god knows how long will he take on his own).. like telling him the truth when he's in serious denial and reluctant to face the truth and now another push on who he really likes..

tae-kwang with a new hairstyle and color haha.. i do wish they would get tgt or at least BFF like how yi-an and eun-byul was haha, he's always making her smile and bring happiness to her..

was so touching that he cared about where eun-bi is and went straight to her after knowing the return of the real eun-byul.. he even went to tongyeong to look for her.. so sweet he's hiding behind eun-bi when being confronted by the kids!! and he ask the nerdiest-looking kid out of all 3 to calm down haha.. cute!!!!

i think eun-bi and min-young (the act cute teacher/soo-in sister) should start a kindergarten or pre-school and teach together.. since one wishes to be a teacher and one is more suited to teach kids.. they'd be the best teacher ever i guess with their experiences, just like the dream type of teacher that eun-bi aspire to be in her interview during ep1..

Hm.. I don't know. I think it's possible that Yi An may have developed feelings for Eun Bi as well. Of course, we want Eun Byul to be the one he likes, but he even said himself he began to like the "new" Eun Byul better than the "old" one - and that was Eun Bi. I think that's why the question So Young asked was more significant. Eun Byul and Yi An seemed to have a thing before she disappeared, so for her to come back and find out Yi An might have wavering feelings is probably disappointing. Not that it's his fault.

I agree with you about hoping that Eun Bi comes back to school and stands up to So Young as herself, and I really do think it'll happen. All of the confidence she's built by defending herself as Eun Byul must've influenced her, and I sense that she'll be coming back to Sekang.
