Shin Se-kyung reunites with Yoo Ah-in in Six Flying Dragons

It sure seems like SBS sageuk drama Six Flying Dragons has had a harder time securing actresses than its lead actors, but it’s finally settled on a leading lady in Shin Se-kyung, who is taking over the role recently vacated by Baek Jin-hee.

The drama does sound like it’ll feature the men a lot more than the women — it’s a two-top, actor-driven plot featuring a power struggle between two powers of the early Joseon Dynasty: a young king (Taejong, played by Yoo Ah-in) faces off against the politician and scholar (Jung Do-jeon, played by Kim Myung-min) who guided his forebears in establishing their dynasty. But hopefully the ladies’ roles offer more than mere set dressing; they may be less prominent to the central story, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be meaty.

I heard Shin’s casting news and thought it was completely obvious — not in a bad way, just in that it made so much sense I wonder why the producers didn’t get her before. Shin Se-kyung is in that same general class of young leading actresses as Baek Jin-hee and, more importantly, has worked with this writer and PD before (Queen Seon-deok and Tree With Deep Roots). So they obviously like her and want to keep working with her. I do recall thinking she was a promising child actor in Queen Seon-deok as the young princess, and thought she was very good in Tree, where she put in an intensity that I haven’t seen from her since.

So I can totally see her playing this role of Boon-yi, a kind young woman with resilience and a positive outlook who’ll romance the hero Lee Bang-won, aka future King Taejong. I find it interesting that she and Yoo Ah-in are paired again when their last outing together, Fashion King, was such a hot mess that it frankly did both a disservice; if you’d only ever seen them in that drama, you’d probably wonder how on earth they’d ever risen to lead status. (That’s the drama where I really started to dislike her, with When a Man Loves sealing the deal.) But both Yoo Ah-in and Shin Se-kyung have been solid in other projects, and have decent sageuk experience, so maybe it’s time to let that one go? Can we all just pretend it didn’t happen?

It’s funny how a year ago I would have bemoaned this casting, but Shin Se-kyung was super cute and winsome in back-to-back dramas Iron Man and Girl Who Sees Smells (I liked her enough that I wished she and Yoochun were dating in real life! I mean, c’mon, that’s nuts right?) so I’ve totally turned back around. I’ll just cross my fingers that she and Yoo Ah-in have a better outing (and better writing) this time, and with these producers at the helm, that should be all kinds of possible. Probable. Inevitable!

Six Flying Dragons is scheduled to air later this fall as a Monday-Tuesday drama on SBS.

I swear to god all Shin Sekyung is getting is these second-hand roles when the original leading lady rejects the role given; lol.

But anyway, like what JB said, I liked her ever since Iron Man and Girl Who Sees Smells just DID SO MANY GOOD THINGS like I actually find SSK very endearing and adorable (ESP WITH THE LOVELY CHOI MOOGAK) so good luck with the new Saeguk! :)

I don't mind her as an actress and really enjoyed her in Tazza 2 but I am not too familiar with her other films or dramas. I've only read horrible things about FASHION KING and not a big fan of SSH acting so I'll probably avoid WHEN A MAN LOVES.

I wasn't impressed by her in Tree with big roots, but she was alright in Queen Seon Deok. After her recent projects I feel like it's a shame for her to go back to sageuk, because her niche is really comedy, but I guess I should give her props for trying to diversify her projects.

Anyway, even though the cast is ok and I'm a sageuk lover, I'm not sure I'll watch this. Call me feminist or what, I don't like it when the girls are ghosts way, way in the background of the plot, with no story or personality, and it looks like it will be the case in SFD.

It's a reflection of the times they lived in that the females in sageuks are not movers and shakers, but it doesn't mean that they can't contribute plotwise. It just depends on the writing, and I have faith in the writer of Queen Seondeok and Tree with Deep Roots for that.

This is the case with TWDR - Shin Se Kyung and Song Ja Ok's characters were the only notable females in the drama, and boy do they pull their weight in it.

I know they can't be leaders all the time (there just weren't many Mishil, Empress Ki and Deokman in history), but yeah, all I'm asking is for them to be actively part of the plot, not just part of the decor. In my personal opinion, Shin Se Kyung's character was not that crucial in TWDR, but I guess I would still be alright with that. I'm hoping things will tend more on QSD's side, for the female characters but also the plot (100% biased, QSD is my ultimate favorite drama haha)

Empress Ki is a well known traitor to her country so I wouldn't put her beside Deokman. Mishil is nothing more than a fairlytale figure unless the Hwarang Segi has been proven to be a real historical record.

You should try one of Jung Ha-yeon's sageuk if you haven't already! Most feminist writer in all of Dramaland. I find that dramas often have difficulty striking a balance between realism and feminism--ie, showing strong female characters who operate within the conditions of possibility that time period would have allowed them. Jung Ha-yeon achieves this with so much success it's constantly amazing and gratifying. Unfortunately most of them don't have subs, but Shin Don and Cruel Palace (which is literally an epic throw-down between Injo's concubine and queen and Crown Prince So-hyun's wife) are more than good enough (in fact imo the former is just about the best drama of all time, so). Other than that, The Princess's Man is another example of a great feminist sageuk that strikes the balance.

Aaand you can probably tell I'm a huge fan of JHY by the way I pounced on one offhand comment about feminism/sageuk. Sorry haha.

I second that. Jung is the better writer when it comes to sageuks. I love all of his work especially Queen In-soo. I hope he is working on another sageuk.

Oh yeah, I really liked The Princess' Man, it's also part of my favorites!! I like it when the female characters have essence and are not just empty shells, and it's always good if they can be leaders or play a crucial role in the main plot.

I didn't know it was from the same writer as Cruel Palace. I tried watching that one but simply couldn't make it. I guess I could try Shindon!

The Princess's Man is actually from a different writer--sorry I was so unclear, got a little carried away with the subject haha. I totally totally agree though, I hate it when female characters aren't fully fleshed out people. It's kind of a mixed bag with sageuk--the women are usually a lot smarter and more capable than they're allowed to be in trendy dramas, but often they're just not the focus, the flip side being that when they are, it's so far removed from the reality of the time that it feels a little weird.

Haha Cruel Palace is not for everyone--it's super violent and super long too. By that same token JHY isn't either--In my experience JHY's dramas do take a while to heat up, and they tend to be very heavy, so a lot of people find them very boring. But if you give them time, when they get going they're like nothing else--they're really deep and extremely moving, and will stay with you long after you're done. Shin Don is very slow to pick up and it's a bit more male-focused, but Princess Noguk has to be one of my favorite female characters ever.

I like this casting news and feels like she and Yoo Ah In needs a redo to wipe out Fashion King. I think this'll be good. This is shaping up to be better and better. :)

Let's just be relieved that it's not Jin Se Yeon, okay?

I think career wise she should try to establish herself in romcom first, but the good thing about this casting is that she's in good hands here - she shone in TWDR thanks to a well written character and will do so again here, because this production team is one that knows what it's doing.

And on a personal note, even though she was soooo endearing as Oh Cho Rim, I enjoyed her quieter characters in TWDR and Fashion King more, it's as if she gave a voice to introverted and withdrawn characters. It's just too bad that the writing in Fashion King went bonkers.

I have watch her in 3 dramas only. Fashion King, When A Man Loves and Girl Who Sees Smell. For me she was really bad in FK and WAML that I avoided watching any of her dramas after that but since I am a Cassiopeia and I love Yoochun I watch GWSS and to my surprise she was actually good in there and was very cute. Her chemistry with Yoochun was great too. So i would say she's a lead role material if I am only basing it on GWSS.

She's probably isn't on YAI or KMM acting level but I think she improved a lot base on her last drama so I guess just gave the drama a try and see if she does well.

Required fields are marked *

I see that the discontent is unanimous. I don't care about her recent roles, on the contrary she was decent in Iron Man, but she's always too self-conscious, as if she's more interested on how she looks on screen than... well, acting. I understand she's the "passe-partout" of this season, covering the cast holes here and there, and though I can forgive "When a Man loves", how can I forget my first impression of her in "Hindsight"? Why did she have to play with Song Kang-Ho?

0

Required fields are marked *

That's exactly it. She seems too self-conscious, so much so I wonder how and why she is an actress.

But she'll probably seem to do better with her acting with this one, since it's a historical piece and this genre doesn't require a whole lot of expression, emotion, or acting in my opinion. Just the break she needed to hide herself in her faults, I guess.

TBH I always thought these writer/PDs wanted Shin sekyung in the first place but at that time she already got attached to another project ---Smelly girl, they waited for her & flirted with bunch of other actresses, as soon as she said " yes", Baek jin-hee out , Shin se-kyung in.

That makes no sense, Smelly girl would have been over long before Six Flying Dragons was even set to start filming. They'd have had no trouble courting her, enough actors take up offers for their next work while currently working on a project. It doesn't become a problem unless they run out on the thing they're currently filming.

Uh, no. What dreamland are you living in? BJH probably opted out because this project has been getting delayed over and over again. This project hasn't been delayed once. If I remember correctly it was set to air in September/October from the very beginning. I think you are getting this mix up with "Unprecedented"
The casting is supposed to wrap up at the end of May so it's basically right on time and ready for shooting. I doubt it has anything to do with BJH opting out. Maybe she got a better offer etc.

i think so too, only 2 days from one actress to another
probably mean they were in talks with ssk before BJH
"opted" out
not that i think this behavior is correct
and they did do the honorary thing by letting BJH do the "leaving"
but it seems that they had there eyes on ssk from the start love them both

I'm so glad that I'm no longer allergic to SSK-- it's remarkable how I went from not being able to stand watching her (after FK and WAML), to absolutely loving her in GWSS. That allowed me to finally start watching High Kick Through the Roof-- she's rather bland in that, but likable nonetheless. I think I'd still be wary of her in a melo, but I'm keen to see how she does in Six Flying Dragons. I hope she does a lot more comedies in the future-- I adore her laugh!

If this news comes out before GWSS then I probably would have drop the drama in an instant no matter how much I love YAI and KMM because I have watch Fashion King and they seriously have no chemistry and SSK was really bad in there and then she was bad in WAML too. But after watching her in Girl Who Sees Smell, I kinds get over my dislike for her in that drama. She did well in there and she was cute with Yoochun. I guess rom-com is more of her forte. But I am willing to give her a chance in this one since like I said I actually like her in GWSS.

In my experience, it's a general phenomenon in Korean cinema the pairing of a newbie actor with a critically acclaimed one. Sometimes the experiment works beautifully and sometimes it fails. This is one of the latter cases. Hindsight was not suited for her either because she was inexperienced or plain inadequate. Tazza and Roaring were blockbusters in which her contribution was minimum. In Five Senses of Eros she was in an insignificant sectionar (but once again with a very good co-star), in Acustic the last story was the most demanding one and I don't believe she was in it. I think she has done some horror films, too, which I haven't seen but I doubt they need extraodinary talent, unless it's the Ring.

0

well from my experience, by watching interviews with cast
and BTS vid, all of her co-star and dir love her
her dir in high kick came to her VIP to show love
about tazza 2, (and if you didnt get that youdid understand the movie - in which the director was so set on her he badgered her manager who at first as against her to let her be in the film) her character has a complete evolution
you cansay that you didnt see it because she is a bad actress but i did the same as the director and the veteran cast that were so impressed by her
so its eye for eye
my eye is backed by the industry- and good taste
and you eye is backed by netizen - hmmm

0

What a bizzare comment! I never thought of myself as a "netizen", I'm just a foreigner who watches Korean films and dramas. What an upgrade or... not...

0

Ikr? who the hell would bad mouth their own co-star? They all support each other whether they sucked donkey balls or great actors.

She is decent in sageuks but she has a long way to go imo and I'm not a freaking netizen either.

0

but the compliments are different again you should go an watch the interviews

but most importantly
the industry think very little of netizen view but really like the money they pore into it

so as to make them feel part of the processes they gave them the popularity award

by no mean this is a reflection of the ability of the actor only a reflection of how the industry perceive their audience
and another very important thing is the evidence of you trying to belittle her a talent

although its a done deal you still come and vent
there are other ways of comporting one self
you could have told yourself that your favorite actress is busy and have a lot on her plate, doesnt like the part, contemplating other project

but choosing instead to go after ssk when its already a done deal mean you know the industry like her but you dont understand why

well thats ok the industry inturn doest understand why you dont and still choose her again and again second choice (only in the last 2) is still only one below the first choice unlike other

so actually you trying to belittle her ability shows the most that you also believe that the industry believe in her
to bad for you
i guess im the smart one

0

AND all netizen think they have their own individual thought its the collective of the the same though what makes it a NETIZEN opinion - based on reaction and not educated thought
learn what it mean read the definition when they say
netizen were... netizen thought..

if by chance your not yet a high school graduate
im sorry and these comments are not yet for you

0

by different compliment im that most of the actors would compliment only when prompt

in ssk case they go out of their way to compliment her volunteering information and not just the men and actually embarrassing her
and they dont say its her looks
, again watch the interview

@ nara, seriously you're not doing Shin Se Kyung any favours when you keep posting such irrational comments below as her fan.

The best way is to just let her do her stuff and support her quietly.

truth be told the only thing ssk brings to the set is ssk
her being so unpopular means the production company will
risk low ratings and few CF
so the only gain for the production is working with ssk
they have more to loose (success wise) than gain
choosing to work with ssk even as a second choice again and again means that for the production stuff the gain of just working with ssk is worth all the low rating few cf and the haters in the world
obviously they love working with her

coming here just to implement and justify your hate (something that should never be justified - whats worg with your upbringing)
shows deep down you know they love her just dont see it
well obviously the industry and i do so its probably you and not me in the wrong

DB is not soompi. Take your delusional self somewhere else, please! People are NOT ( I repeat are NOT!) netizens in this blog. You're insulting us all by using the "collective" word here. You cannot convince anyone, you don't need to convince anyone and none of us wants to be convinced, either.
Why don't you spread your love for SSK in some other social media? There might be people far more eager to be converted to this bizarre religion of yours somewhere else. Instead of interviews and her colleagues' opinions (a.k.a. common courtesy between cast and crew) I suggest you start watching some cinema which might include other films than SSK's if possible (wow, Ikr?).
I'm not a critic but a film buff and this is MY opinion!

well, your insulting yourself by using words incorrectly,
the basis of conversation is the correct definition of words and their meaning
you admitted to being one, by immediatly that my referance was about you while i used "netizen" generally to make a point you took it personally therefor admitting to being one

hate is NOT something that should be spread or justify
you just have ignored and not watch it like i do
i never go to any article of someone i dont like, as you obviously recognize me, you can see i only go to ssk and show my support
haters on the other hand try to me and her other supporters hate her

i saw quit a few viewers comments that said they just heard bad things about her and didnt even try watching her
your job? i presume?

I'm more concerned about the writing. I just hope the writer team do a really good job, otherwise this could turn to another Secret Door.

Well, the writing is certainly the most important part, but considering kim young hyun/park sang yun is doing the writing, I wouldn't be as worried as you are about it.

Sorry but this isn't accurate anymore. It seems that Lee Jong Hyun of CN Blue's virtual wife on WGM, Gong Seung Yeon, will be playing the lead role as of June 4th news release.

no. she's just playing another female character that likes yoo ah in's character BUT he doesn't return her affections. SSK is still main lead for yoo ah in's character (unfortunately)

All the female casts in this drama are weak, IMO.

In this one, as well as LJK's new drama, the female leads (main and supporting both) seem to be the weak link! It makes me wonder if it's a random coincidence or something we'll be stuck with for the next few seasons: Excellent male leads opposed to average female ones (primarily in terms of talent and perhaps in looks, too!). It's a bit alarming, tbh!

Gong Seung Yeon is a new actress. I don't think it's fair to call her weak... a more accurate term is that she's inexperienced. SSK though has been in the business for a while and has had multiple main lead roles... i would consider her acting weak because she's had years to improve on it with every new project she gets but it's still lacking in comparative to how many years she's been in the business.

What is up with the casting of recent female lead actresses lately? Are all the good ones dead? Now, all I'm seeing are idols and actresses who can't act getting casted. Love the male leads here, but the female leads are a bit disappointing. Have not warmed up to Shin Se Kyung at all. I find that she tries too hard and her facial expressions don't have much variety. :/ If the storyline is good, I might check it out, but other than that, I'll let it run its full course and decide whether it's enough to let me sit through a Shin Se Kyung drama.

Omg no!!!!! I really hate her acting skills! She was horrible in Fashion King and even in Girl Who Sees Smells. At the end of that drama, I was ready to hit her. She isn't a great actress at all. Her facial expressions is definitely horrible. I loved Yoo Ah In in Secret Love Affair, please don't do this with her!

I am sorry to be one of the nay-sayers, but I am really disappointed with these casting news. I am not sure what it is about her but I just do not seem to be able to warm to her and think that just about any drama I have seen here in would have been better if somebody else had played her part. I just saw her in in 'The girl who can see smells' and whilst Yoochun was utterly adorable her performance lacked subtlety, in my opinion. I very much hope to be proven wrong.

Why, why, why did they have to put the name shin se kyung with yoo ah in. Ever since SLA I'm a total fan for Yoo ah in. but Shin se kyung can not act *sighs* I hope im wrong and this drama will turn out well and worthwhile to watch
