Scholar Who Walks the Night sends both leads to the hospital
by javabeans
Oh no, what is going on over there on the set for Scholar Who Walks the Night? Yesterday the vampire-sageuk-fusion-fantasy drama sent lead actor Lee Jun-ki to the hospital with a fractured nose (not the beautiful, beautiful nose!), and now we’re hearing that leading lady Lee Yubi is also out with an injured back. Eek!
Lee Jun-ki’s injury occurred during an early dawn shoot on Wednesday, June 10, in what is only described as a fall. He was ushered to the emergency room immediately and underwent surgery later that day; it’ll require a week of recovery, prompting him to cancel drama shoots for the week as well as a scheduled appearance at the Shanghai International Film Festival, which opens this Saturday.
Lee Yubi’s injury occurred at the same time as Lee Jun-ki’s (the two fell together while filming), although her condition wasn’t reported until the next day. (Did they fall down a mountain? Off a cliff?) She experienced enough pain that she couldn’t get up or walk and headed to intensive care, where a specialist diagnosed her with a herniated lumbar disc. She was told she needed to remain in the hospital for one to two weeks, but her management, Sidus HQ, stated that because of filming she would be treated with medication for two or three days at the hospital, and return to work as soon as possible. (To which I say, you were told “as soon as possible” was one to two weeks! Who are you to disagree with the diagnosis?)
Lee Jun-ki’s reps also stated that he’d do his best to not hold up the filming schedule (god, Korea, and your workaholia), although this drama does sound like it’s in reasonably good shape: They began filming in early May and are premiering in July, so they have a decent amount of footage already shot and a good amount of time still left before the drama airs. So the production may not suffer too much—although really, shouldn’t we worry about the actors before the schedule?
Scholar Who Walks the Night is set in the Joseon era and stars Lee Yubi as a young woman who dresses as a man to work at a bookseller and the romance that unfolds when she meets the mysterious scholar played by Lee Jun-ki and learns that he’s a blood-sucking vampire. The drama will follow Warm and Cozy on MBC.

Yes, I am worried for Jun Ki. when I first heard of his nose injury, it hurts. Will there be a scar? He looks so good with his pointy nice nose...oh gosh, not his nose! Please get well soon and no scars to your beautiful nose!
MBC ought to be shot...rushing the production that it must premiered in July, and not taking care of the artists enough to prevent accidents! Priority are the artists' health and safety and not premiering the drama on time in July!
I always felt that Jun Ki should not have taken up the offer to do this drama in the beginning!

I know they've already been filming. I should've worded my post differently. I mainly meant "Can MBC just put this drama in another time slot until the leads fully recover?!"
They should let the leads rest and make a full recovery before getting back to filming. The drama can wait! It could be aired later in the year or something. Health comes first. This whole thing is upsetting to me. :(

I'm more worried for Yubi. Herniated disc is no joke. And first ep hasn't even started yet.

Ridiculous when the doctors say two weeks and management company says two days. Makes me cry for these actors.
At least since she's dressing like a man in period costume, she doesn't have to film while wearing high heels. And she can hide a lot of braces/wraps and pain patches under the robes. Poor girl, I hope resuming work against doctors suggestion doesn't result in permanent damage to her back. I imagine her and all these poor kpop boy band members 10 years down the road, sitting in drug rehab because they're addicted to OxyContin from the back injuries they couldn't treat and let heal properly due to "schedules."

MTE! Now, granted, I wasn't all that diligent about taking care of myself after I got a herniated disk (I waited a couple of months to try physical therapy), but it took me a year to be able to walk without listing to the side, or sit up straight without pain. And I still get relapses bad enough that it takes me a week to walk again.
It's this kind of thing that ought to convince people to give up the live shoot system--even above a quality issue, it's a question of valuing human beings. The entire crew of people working on this drama put themselves through hell because of it. My heart goes out to this poor girl.

Dear Beanies, the Management company must be SUED. We fans love our Dramas but not when they are this tainted by blood and suffering (a little bruise is a thing, this is FAR beyond tolerable). I wholeheartly agreed on the hiatus in filming Maids for the same reason.
If International Fandom's opinion has ANY weight in the channel's decision, then PLEASE hear us: we PREFER A HIATUS on the production if that means SOMEONE WILL RECEIVE PROPER AND OPORTUNE MEDICAL TREATMENT.
I know it will give you a headache about how will you fill those segments or losing money over the extended period and even fall into penalties, but it will always be better than being considered an inhuman company, since eventually no actor nor actress with some fame will want to work with you.
This is not a joke. A person's health is its most precious possession.
Sorry for the upper caps in some words. I don't want to be rude but emphatical. Sorry also for the assumption that my view reflects the feelings of all Beanies.
Thanks for your patience.

I hope they are both able to rest n recover well, w no bad effects.
Seems like Korea is a difficult society to work and live in, esp. for celebrities. You've to:
kowtow to your sundaes;
be the happy mood setter on location and on set;
work long insane hours w/o sleep;
get hurt and insist on going back to work despite doctors' orders;
deal w the effects of such work injuries after the job on hand, which can last for weeks or months;
keep in touch w your fans on various SNS;
live w anti's and sasaeng fans;
be followed around by Dispatch etc.
do charity work and make donations....
And these are just the ones that we know of.
I feel sorry and love K actors in a way that I don't for actors of any other nationality.

Everyone thinks that being an actor is all about looking good and having money. Actors get inured on film sets all the time, not just Korean actors. They often work under harsh stressful conditions. It's not nearly as glamorous as everyone thinks.

Poor things. I bet LJK feels badly b/c there is no way for him to start filming before medically recommended b/c his injury was to his face while hers is not visible. My aunt broke her nose recently (she had the most spectacular double black eyes) and had surgery for it so I've recently seen up close how ugly that can get.

I don't think she's comparing who has the worst injury, but rather that LJK may feel bad that he may be unable to continue filming immediately after the surgery due to the visual nature of his injury, and thus affect the production schedule. In fact, he posted a "Thanks and Sorry" message on his Instagram.
However, looking at past productions, I'm sure the production can write in his injury into the script if they wanted to, such as in the case of Gong Hyojin in IOIL.
So let's just hope that the production and agencies will let the actor and actress get sufficient rest and time to recover properly.

Dear TJ, if they have to postpone the film, so be it. Even if they have to (honourably) let her go for the rest of the filming, so be it. But this Lady needs to receive a proper medical treatment, not just a simple Band-Aid.
I had a bad back two months ago and even when it was just a sprain in my back's muscles it hurt like hell. I couldn't even stand for three days, had to have my pills beside me because something as simple as changing positions in bed was excruciating, and had to crawl just to go to the bathroom. I couldn't work for two weeks!!!. And it was just a simple sprain.

apparently her agency had clarified, as per BlackHole below, that she'll have 2-3 days of medication/hospital stay and then she'll get to rest after that for an appropriate amount of time. I hope they keep their word.
The saving grace is that they've been filming for a month and have four weeks to go before the projected premiere, so a week or two off is something Lee Jun-ki and Lee Yubi (especially her) can and should get.

What were they doing to get injured like this? Where are the stunt doubles?? ):
A bad back is no good. It's definitely something you have to be careful about. They should let her rest. I'm assuming Junki may get to rest fully because a nose after surgery is not something you can hide but Yubi won't get to because you can hide a bad back. Warm and Cozy is still a ways off from being over; it should be fine to take a break. :/ Anyway, I hope their "as soon as possible" doesn't mean after those 2 to 3 days.

@bakachild exactly, how is Lee Yubi's management/MBC so greedy that they plan to put thr poor girl on painkillers and force her to go back to the set right in less than half the recommended time when she is supposed to be hospitalised fot AT LEAST one week? When her costar got the full time to recover because he has a face injury? Will MBC really be shameless enough to threaten to recast her for this?
And they must have filmed a lot of scenes already since they began filming one month ago and there is one month left.....MBC and Sidus should stop risking this young woman's. health, what do they thinkis going to happen if she gets in so much pain from not healing properly, that she can't film later in the drama, during the live shoot? I read about LJK last night but had no idea about Lee Yubi. Maybe they fell off a horse? At least that was by first thought. In an odd way it's a good thing that LJK injury was on his face because they can't hide that and so have to let him rest. I feel awful for Lee Yubi. That' seriously messed up. People complain that idols get forced into things too early but it's actors as well. I would consider hers the more serious injury but she's getting even less time to recover.
I understand they're the leads but since they're a tiny bit ahead in scheduling, you'd think they could try and shoot all the scenes that they're not in first. It may not be many but it's something.

Even so, knowing the crazy Korean live shooting schedules that the actors and actresses are subjected to, I'm worried that this "delay" may cause the actors and actresses to suffer even more down the road. It may be better if they could delay the broadcast by a week or two.

I really hope Sidus/MBC doesn't force Lee Yubi back to the set before she's had the appropriate amount of rest, a herniated disc is not the kind of injury that can be easily ignored after a few painkillers. I've been looking forward to her first-ever lead role since she signed on but not like this...:(
And NOOOOOOOOOOOO not oppa's nose! His beautiful, beautiful nose....but the small upside of it being a facial injury is that he CAN'T film and will get his time to recover. Which is better luck than poor Yubi had, she's the one with the worse injury but being subjected to potential Byun-pire tactics to get her back to work at the cost of her health :(

Oh nooooooo for Lee Jun-Ki & Lee Yu-Bi. :(
Difficulty breathing through your nose and a herniated disc (for that matter back problems in general) are serious matters. No joke about it! May they both receive the best care available.
First and foremost, both actors should be allowed the proper rest to fully recuperate from the injuries they sustained. I hope LJK's beautiful nose is correctly realigned by the doctors and that he completely heals from the fractured nose/nasal bone fractures. And I hope that LYB is able to completely heal and not suffer from lifelong back pain as a result of this on the job injury (aka OJI).

This is really horrifying news--not so much the accident (which is bad in and of itself) but the complete indifference that seems to be shown by the actors' reps and the drama production team to the actors' health and well-being.
I agree with all the comments above that the actors should have sufficient time to recuperate instead of being forced to return to work.
I send my well wishes to Lee Jun-ki and Lee Yu-bi though!

can they really do that? I mean, legally, if doctors reccomend 1-2 weeks of rest, isn't it against some labour law to let the person come back to work before that time? I mean, if someone hurt themselves on set, wouldn't it be bad to let that person on set again before some doctor gives an A-ok? Because if her injury gets worse or if she gets hurt again, ins't that ground for a huge lawsuit? like against the agency for pushing it and also agaist the whole production for allowing it. And these expensieve productions, don't they work with some insurance of sorts (for accidents and such)? isn't allowing injured people to go on working against medical orders grounds to lose the insurance? I'm in a different country and also a different field that's really tense about injuries at work, so I really don't get how all this works. don't they have actor's union or something?

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Who's the more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows him?
I've been actively following K-dramas for at least 5 years now. There hasn't been a single year when an actor, or crew member, hasn't been seriously injured or killed. At this point, it's common place but I continue to watch and follow the dramas. I recognize that dramas will continue whether I watch or not but what does it say about me that I enable an industry that clearly cares very little about the safety and well-being of its greatest assets?

Dear EVW09, it says about you that you CARE, that you feel for the actors and that you are a warm person. That you question the morality of such practices is an healthy thing, but to go as far as to ask yourself if you are a bad person just for enjoying a form of entertainment were such practices happens tells me that you are probably misinformed about the compromises we live with or a very naive person.
Then the small script about the reality we live in: there is a compromise in everything. A feww examples:
When we eat chicken we don't eat a happy smiling chicken came from a green field with a rainbow behind, but one that can barely move in a small place, forced to feed by controling his circarian cycle and that usually is sacrificed few weeks after getting out his egg. In fact male chickens are usually killed since the ones that puts eggs are female ones.
The time we spend overworking is time we could spend with our families.
Got a cheap shirt from a third world country?, there is a big posibility someone is spending his/her childhood being productive instead of being educated.
The bottom line is: don't let this news crawl under your skin, and please enjoy what you do/have but being more aware about the hidden costs. It will make you appreciate other's works and lives much better and it will lead you into a more compassionate life.
Sorry for the bleak post in an entertainment forum.

I'm worried about Lee Yubi. Seriously, what they're planning is not a good idea. She needs to recover. Ugh...I feel sick just thinking about it. This madness needs to stop.

Is it possible to make his makeup a little less obvious? I think this obsession with skin whitening is going a little overboard ...

If the doctor says 2 weeks then its 2 weeks. No shortcut to recovery. W back injury is serious. Lee Yubi's maanagement should put their foot down. The actors wellbeing should always come first. This is ridiculous. What happens to our dear actors if they cant do other dramas in the future because of this physical abuse?
And Junki's beautiful nose needs to heal perfectly!
