JTBC picks up Yoon Kye-sang thriller Last, D-Day to follow

There’s been some back and forth at cable network JTBC over scheduling its drama lineup for the rest of the year — disaster medical drama D-Day has been casting in the hopes of being picked up for the July Friday-Saturday slot following Beloved Eun-dong, but in the end it went to Last, the thriller that’s been courting Yoon Kye-sang (Full Sun) to headline.

Last is a webtoon adaptation that’ll be helmed by PD Jo Nam-gook of The Chaser and Empire of Gold, and will be an intrigue drama in a similar vein. It’s about a smart and successful fund manager who suffers a huge loss on a deal he thought was foolproof, and as a consequence his partner commits suicide and he becomes a homeless man on the run from loan shark gangsters.

Interestingly, the story depicts the pecking order of the homeless people who live inside Seoul Station and the secret organizations among them. It’s an action-thriller about a hero who claws himself up from rock bottom to figure out what went wrong with his deal and get his life back. Yoon Kye-sang has signed on to take the leading role, and Seo Ye-ji (Superdaddy Yeol) and Lee Beom-soo (Triangle) are confirmed to co-star.

I like Yoon Kye-sang in dark, gritty roles, and I’m definitely drawn to the premise, which I could see being a classic revenge tale with an urban twist. It’s not every day that a drama is going to be set in the underground world of homeless people in a train station, and I’m already curious about the hero entering a whole new social order and climbing his way to the top.

Last will air following Beloved Eun-dong on Fridays and Saturdays beginning in mid-July. D-Day is scheduled to follow in September.

Yoon Kye Sang has experience with darker works, so yay! I have not seen him act much, but he is established and well liked. He rocks the sympathy thing, so this role will suit him.

Also, as a fan and fangirl, I am so very glad Lee Beom Soo made the jump to cable. Public one, but still. I just hope this choice will pay off better than his last few. He was especially wasted in 'Triangle'. As long as he is given more to do here than warm chairs with his man-cheeks, I'm good.

I know miss Seo will probably be a love interest, so I wonder if Lee will be the villain. That would be a good call, given 'The Divine Move' did well last year and cinematic is the thing to go for with such darker series. Just don't give him full body tattoos again. I think he's traumatized.

Somehow the synopsis reminds me of Jdrama 'Zeni no Sensou' but since 'Last' is being adopted from a webtoon,I guess the actual story will be different. The plot sounds very interesting plus the cast is solid so looking forward to it.

Interesting premise with good cast. JTBC now even try to take over drama after variety shows. Really impress with what they are trying to do.

Love the cast, Lee Bum Soo and Yoon Kye Sang and with the PD that established good credential through The Chaser definitely something that worth to anticipate. Hopefully the script writing would be good too.

I wonder why confirmation news came late when Kyesang has already started shooting a while back. I guess because of the airing date.

Is her acting bad?

She was pretty horrible in 'Night Watchman's Journal' and did ok in 'Super Daddy Yeol', but she is not female lead material for a serious show, no. Unless some miracle happens, but those usually don't.

She's ok for rom-com, as a side character, which she was in the latter work mentioned, but that's about it for now.

This has too many things going right with it to be bad. Please don't waste what you have been given show. I will wait for you with open arms.

At first read I was skeptical with another running away from loan sharks plot but the next paragraph intrigued with the premise of a secret organization amid the homeless. It sounds novel enough. Hopefully the writer will keep it close to the original webtoon and not risk pissing off those fans as seen with the currently airing OM.

Now they dropped a teaser too. Short and you can barely make some faces out (the three leads and a few more), but hey, it looks like they've been filming a while. Which is good, because this sudden news of an upcoming release was worrisome.
