Warm and Cozy: Episode 6
by javabeans
Today’s an improved outing from yesterday, mostly because She Who Must Not Be Named doesn’t actually have to be named that much. Instead we have two sweet guys running around trying to make our heroine happy, and that’s a dynamic I could watch for days. Of course we can’t leave out the inevitable conflict that throws wrinkles into proceedings, and our hero still has a ways to go in growing up and learning to think about people other than himself (and hateful people who don’t deserve to be thought about). But: baby steps!

EPISODE 6 RECAP
Gun-woo tells Jung-joo about his frankly effed-up relationship with Ji-won, where the two of them are terrible to each other but keep coming back because they can’t let go. Then he leans in to kiss her purposely so Ji-won will see them, which she does and then leaves with a huffy glare. Couldn’t you two just work this out in therapy?
Gun-woo pulls back since he got what he wanted, and chides Jung-joo for closing her eyes. Rattled, she lies that she was shutting them out of alarm, and they bicker back and forth about him using her, and her giving Ji-won wrong ideas about their living situation. Jung-joo argues that it was upsetting to see him being treated so badly, and he exclaims, “Why would that upset you? Do you like me?”
She freezes. He looks stunned at that idea, but stammers, “Since that’s not true, why are you overreacting?” When she starts to leave, he grabs her arm and tells her to deny it, or kick him. And if she doesn’t, I will.
Jung-joo warns him not to use her like that again, “Or else I really will like you.” She gets suddenly intense, grabbing his shoulders and saying that she won’t stop at pretending, leaning her face in closer… closer… then slamming a knee into his thigh. I’d have aimed a few inches to the left, but Jung-joo’s a nicer person than I am.
She goes to bed upset with him and herself. Gun-woo is less perceptive and doesn’t understand why the whole exchange was so upsetting, though it bothers him enough to keep him thinking about it. Poong-san assumes he’s upset over Ji-won, but Gun-woo actually isn’t—he explains unconcernedly that Ji-won will send a signal when she’s ready to smooth things over, he’ll “take the bait,” and their peace will be restored.
Gun-woo assures Poong-san that he has nooooo romantic interest in Jung-joo whatsoever, and that he can placate Ji-won by explaining Jung-joo’s serious illness. Poong-san looks a little nervous at that, especially when Gun-woo says he’d never have given Warm & Cozy to her if she weren’t sick.
Gun-woo checks on Jung-joo, offering to make her ddukkbokki if she’s hungry. She bursts out, “Stop tempting me!” She has no interest, she says, but if he keeps trying to tempt her thoughtlessly, she might just fall for it. She calls him just as evil as the food he’s enticing her with, and Gun-woo, clearly missing the doublespeak, is left baffled.
He snaps, “If I’d offered ddukkbokki with cheese, I bet you’d have called me a murderer! And if I wanted to add dumplings, you’d have called me a psychopath serial killer!” He storms off, and they both go to bed angry.
In the morning, Jung-joo sees villagers making their cleanup rounds and offers her crew to join in. The ajummas are impressed with her attitude, especially when contrasted with Gun-woo’s habit of paying the fines instead of participating. Jung-joo prods, cajoles, then forces Gun-woo awake to join in, which he finally does, albeit grudgingly.
While out sweeping the street (or in his case, loitering while waving a broom aimlessly), Gun-woo gets hit in the back of the head with a BB pellet, shot by a little boy with a toy gun. The boy ignores his scolding and keeps shooting around the neighborhood, until a pellet takes out a lamppost bulb. He looks scared at what he’s done, and Gun-woo crows that the boy is in soooo much trouble now, which makes the boy cry.
The boy’s grandmother, one of the diver ajummas, assumes that Gun-woo is harassing the boy and blames him for the broken light bulb. Gun-woo defends himself, but does so badly and is relieved when Jung-joo joins in to defend him (hiding behind her like a child, which he kind of is).
Jung-joo tries to be diplomatic about “our Gun-woo” not being the culprit, and the ajumma seems willing to see reason, but for Gun-woo’s angry defense that raises her hackles. The ajumma storms off angry at the both of them, muttering about Jung-joo banding together with her fellow Seoulite. Feeling wrongly accused, Jung-joo clucks sympathetically and checks on his head.
Mr. Gong witnesses this and sighs that the two city kids should have held their tongues even if they weren’t in the wrong, because that ajumma can hold a grudge. Jung-joo’s application to the diving school is sure to be rejected now, since she’s one of the judges.
This bums her out, because she’d really wanted to get accepted—then she could dive for her own menu items and, more importantly, get in the good graces of the diver ajumma crowd. Gun-woo hadn’t realized it meant so much to her and proposes that she blackmail the underwear mayor into backing her, which earns him a hard pinch. Jung-joo grumbles, using the mayor’s own words at him (Jeju dialect for “So frustrating, he must be stupid”).
But she does drop by the city office to see Wook, ready to butter him up. Wook has already heard of her encounter with the ajumma and guesses at her intentions, and Jung-joo very briefly considers Gun-woo’s blackmail suggestion. But she thinks better of it and gives up, per Wook’s suggestion.
But that makes him call her back, protesting that she gave up so quickly—is she really not going to blackmail him? For honoring her promise to keep the secret, he agrees to help.
Gun-woo tries to help too, deciding to apologize to the diver ajumma, though he struggles to actually do it. Mr. Gong offers helpful tips, such as softening the mood by singing a song, offering makgulli, then losing at cards to her. Gun-woo whines that he doesn’t know how to do any of that, but at the warning that Jung-joo will be rejected for sure, he sucks it up to try. Good boy.
The ajumma urges the other divers to score Jung-joo’s application poorly, although Hae-shil reminds them that they ought to be fair. They point out that she asked for special consideration for that Mr. Song guy (Jung-geun), and she says pityingly that he needs the help. At least with diving, he can learn to support himself. Heh, I love this misunderstanding about Jung-geun, because his determination to prove how awesome he is (which just makes her think he’s bluffing) is the best thing.
And the next best thing is his tactic of appealing to her pity: He texts Hae-shil sounding extra pathetic about how she promised to help him and how he has no confidence in his interviewing ability. He sits in his luxurious resort office impatiently watching his phone for a reply, worried that he’s been blown off, and bounds up triumphantly when she finally replies. “I wasn’t blown off!”
Hae-shil gives him advice on his interview, which he scoffs at because he’s better suited to princely roles than humble ones. In fact, in school, he only ever played prince parts in plays, and insists with all earnestness to Hae-shil that “I’m doing an incredibly cool thing right now!”
He blusters that he won’t study for his interview—he’ll just face failure if it comes and consider it his fate. Hae-shil reads his speech as more proud bluffing, and tells him kindly that it’s okay to study and pass, and not feel ashamed.
Gun-woo makes his way to the diver ajumma’s house ready to do the whole literal song and dance, armed with makgulli and cards, and overhears the family as they eat in the yard. Two grandsons complain about eating at grandma’s house where everything smells and tastes fishy, wanting to go to the fancy resort instead. Grandma’s hurt but says that it’s fine, telling her daughter-in-law to take the boys elsewhere if they want.
That’s when Gun-woo comes up and announces that he’s here to take the lady and her family to their luncheon reservation at his restaurant. The daughter-in-law is impressed, and Grandma goes with it quietly while Gun-woo presents them with an impressive spread and describes her as a regular. He serves the boys fresh seafood pizza made with their grandmother’s catch, and they give Grandma a proud thumbs-up.
Mr. Gong praises Gun-woo for being a good friend, saying that Jung-joo will be pleased to hear what he did. Gun-woo says he didn’t do it for the credit, and that real friends support each other quietly, like Daddy Long Legs, which I believe not for a second.
Mr. Gong calls him really cool and promises to keep the secret from Jung-joo, which makes him pout in disappointment, though he can’t exactly admit that all that modesty was false. Haha, serves you right!
Wook takes Jung-too to a diving museum and urges her to read up on the materials. The divers are proud of their work and tradition, he advises, so don’t go in talking about it just as a money-making venture.
Gun-woo pouts at the restaurant, wondering what’s taking Jung-joo so long to return home. He sees her arriving in Wook’s car and hovers jealously, then thanks him (mostly sarcastically) for being such a gentleman. He almost calls him “hwangto man” (in reference to the underwear), but Jung-joo claps a hand over his mouth to shut him up in time.
Gun-woo asks sulkily if she’s taking the mayor’s side over his, and she answers readily that if he’s making her choose, “Then right now, yes.” When she orders him back to work, he grumbles about all the effort he put in someone who isn’t even taking his side.
Wook approaches the diver ajumma with similar intentions of smoothing things over, armed with makgulli and cards. But she’s already bragging to her friends about everything Gun-woo did for her family, and he notes that he’s a step behind.
That night, Gun-woo comments on Jung-joo’s diligent studying for her interview, saying she’s already armed with plenty of fighting spirit. She offers to give her first catch to him to cook up, saying that it’ll feel rewarding to be contributing to the team.
He asks if they’re on the same team, still grumpy about her taking Wook’s side. She laughs that she works here, not at the mayor’s office, and that’s enough to restore his good mood. Just then Jung-joo notices that he’s been using her moisturizer behind her back, exclaiming that she saves that for special days only, to which he complains about his meager allowance. She tries to wrestle the bottle away from him when he uses more, and really, you know you’re in a Korean drama when you have the hero and heroine fighting over the same cosmetics.
Interview day rolls around at the diving school, and Gun-woo drives Jung-joo over and wishes her good luck. He insists on waiting outside so they can go buy diving equipment afterward, though he sighs to see the prices online.
Jung-geun arrives (wearing a sparkly tracksuit, beloved by ridiculous chaebols everywhere) and stops short to recognize his brother right in front of the school and hurriedly ducks out of sight. Crouching around the corner with the clock ticking, Jung-geun scrambles for a solution and ends up calling his sister and asks her to call Gun-woo over immediately. He barks at her to offer him a credit card, totally reneging on his earlier words about cutting him off.
Jung-joo impresses in her interview, earning approving looks from the panel. Jung-geun almost misses his interview slot waiting for Gun-woo to leave, but just barely makes it in time.
Jung-joo is disappointed to find that Gun-woo isn’t waiting outside as promised and takes a bus. He calls to insist that she not go equipment shopping without him, wanting to buy the diving mask for her, and tells her to wait so he can meet her.
And then we cut to Ji-won at the resort. Ugh. You. She hears that Gun-woo is on his way to meet his noona at the cafe and gets an idea, which can never be a good thing coming from her. Bleh.
Ji-won finds noona first and excuses herself before Gun-woo arrives, saying that they’re not on great terms right now. But she wears an evil smirk on her way out, telling us she’s got some scheme in the works. UGH, I hate youuuuu. STOP EXISTING.
Gun-woo gets his credit card from noona, who comments on his fight with Ji-won. That’s when he finds the cell phone she left behind, and both brother and sister know her well enough to guess that she did it on purpose. What I don’t understand is why they know this, and yet don’t find it appalling. Gun-woo even smiles, understanding that this is his signal to approach Ji-won.
He catches up to her outside to return the phone, saying teasingly that she’s always losing things and how he’ll have to make sure to always stick around to get them for her. Ji-won thanks him and sorta-apologizes for the other night, saying she was oversensitive, and drops hints that she wants him to join her shopping. Of course he jumps to take her, because he is an idioooooot—and then Ji-won suggests they go shopping in Seoul.
Meanwhile, Jung-joo waits at a cafe for Gun-woo to meet her, having bought him a fancy moisturizing cream (it’s an exchange for the diving mask he’s buying her, she rationalizes), and also a large shaved ice to share. She waits in anticipation, but the longer she sits there, the more droopy she gets, until finally the dessert sits in a puddle.
Jung-joo gets up to leave just as Gun-woo shows up, but deflates again when he tells her he has to go to Seoul to help Ji-won buy things. He offers to buy her mask next time, and almost involuntarily, Jung-joo’s arm shoots out to hold his back. She just says they have work to do and reservations at the restaurant, and request weakly, “Don’t go.”
Gun-woo has already made flight reservations and promises to fly back tonight, and is dense enough to be confused at her dispirited response. He follows her out of the cafe calling her name, but Ji-won keeps him from going after her and he’s left to watch Jung-joo walking away glumly.
Jung-geun waits outside the diving school for Hae-shil, and asks for a ride to the bus stop. He reminds her that she said she’d “take responsibility” for him (since she saved his life) and gets on her bike, somehow managing to be imperious even when asking for a favor. Oh, these brothers. Maybe if you tallied their emotional maturities together, they’d add up to a real adult.
Mr. Gong sees them riding off together, and the sight is so suspicious that he goes looking for Jung-geun’s diving application. Diver ajumma fills him in on the details, about how Hae-shil fished him out of the water and has been taking care of him ever since, which Mr. Gong interprets as mooching.
As they drive, Jung-geun makes a show of saying he’ll have to call the governor to fix up the roads, which Hae-shil interprets as more big talk. He insists he does know the governor, and as he reaches for his phone, the bike hits a bump in the road and he lurches in his seat, grabbing her for balance… only he accidentally grabs her by the breasts. HA.
He’s so shocked he tumbles off the bike and insists it was an accident, and in his haste to make her believe him, he blurts that he doesn’t like her so much that he’d go through this whole show just to touch her. Which… then means that he does like her somewhat, and she startles to register that.
He stops with the bumbling defense and tells her he’ll leave their fate in her hands, and if she wants to be rid of him, she can reject him from the school and he’ll stop coming by. He heads off on foot, looking pitiful clutching his scraped hand, and she watches him go.
The town blogger gathers stories on Gun-woo’s mother (“Woman of ill-fortune or happiness”) and explains to her friend that she’s ready to start writing her novel—it’s a love story set here, about “that person’s” mother. Among her clippings is a familiar picture of Gun-woo’s mother with the man who we presume is Jung-joo’s father.
Jung-joo’s still in her funk when Wook finds her outside the restaurant, and gives a muted reply when he says he’s having his office dinner at Warm & Cozy. He’d expected a more enthusiastic response and scratches his head a bit, then explains that the office is sending away an employee to the Seoul office, where he can be with his girlfriend.
Rather than agreeing that it’s good news for him, Jung-joo sighs that he’s a traitor for leaving his co-workers behind. Wook says it’s not like they begged him to stay so it’s not a betrayal, but Jung-joo asks what it would be if they had begged.
Clocking her mood, Wook asks if that’s what happened to her, and she nods. So he admits that he had actually asked the employee to stay, but if someone’s going to leave, they’ll leave in any case, and it’s easier on yourself to accept that and let them go.
Jung-joo sits there a good long while, mulling over Wook’s words.
It’s night when Gun-woo and Ji-won return to the resort, and it’s telling that while Ji-won says it’s “only 9 o’clock” and suggests dinner, he says it’s “already 9” and excuses himself in a hurry. I suppose the sour look on Ji-won’s face is almost worth having to see her face in the first place…
Gun-woo bursts into the restaurant all chipper and cheery as usual, chattering about shopping being harder than it used to. Jung-joo tells him calmly that since he’s got a credit card back, he can leave now, which confuses him—where would he go? She answers pleasantly, “Don’t stay here anymore. I’d rather you not be here. I think I’d feel more comfortable sending you somewhere else.”
His face falls. Jung-joo tells him, “So Gun-woo-ya, go.”
COMMENTS
Definitely a better ending moment to go out on than yesterday, which was pretty aggravating. Gun-woo still did things to disappoint me this episode, but I am glad that we end at basically a reversal of the last episode; this time, he leaves Ji-won to go to Jung-joo and finds himself on the end of rejection, rather than being the one to shove her aside. More than that, I at least appreciate that this time Jung-joo’s the one making the decisions, rather than being jerked around.
Gun-woo’s an interesting case where he infuriates me constantly, and sometimes I’m peeved enough at him that I find myself rooting for Jung-joo to see the adorable mayor in a romantic light, because if she could love him, they’d have the cutest, heartwarming relationship. It’s the kind of romance that you’d imagine for characters if they could be real people—happily uneventful, with a minimum of drama—though I suppose watching a whole series of that would make for a pretty boring drama.
But even when he pisses me off, I find Gun-woo a genuinely decent person—just really really childish, with the attention span of an ant. If not for his obsession with Ji-won, he’d be really easy to root for, and frankly her inclusion in his story taints his character by association. I don’t want to harp on her too much (because it feels too much like going off on the obvious), but really, I don’t understand why Gun-woo likes Ji-won, and why anybody thought she was a good addition to this story. Sure, I can see the value of adding a rival and first love, and don’t even mind the love-to-hate types, but she’s just so… WHY? Why are you here? Why won’t you go away?
She’s just one example of why I feel like the writers are getting lax, and I don’t say that because Warm and Cozy’ story is loose and casual. That’s totally fine by me, and I enjoy the breezy ambiance and warm, summery feel. It’s the laziness of the writing that feels disappointing—the Hong sisters have always had flaws in their writing, but they’ve always been part of the package, and their dramas have been fresh and funny enough that I could accept the flaws, since the rest gave me such enjoyment. This drama’s plot and emotional trajectory, though, is going through all the steps of their early dramas—the heroine feeling left behind; the hero being dense and running around after his first love, unaware that his feelings are shifting; the second lead being on hand to help her quietly; the hero ditching the heroine multiple times; and finally, the tables turning when he opens his eyes. Very Chun-hyang/My Girl/Fantasy Couple.
That said, I’m not giving up on Warm and Cozy, mostly because I felt going in that it wasn’t going to have me as emotionally invested as other Hong sisters dramas that did. Maybe it’s a case of expectations measuring up to reality (which mitigates disappointment considerably), and it’s a pretty easy watch despite its flaws. I actually did feel that this episode showed a glimmer of their comedic style—toned down, but familiar in its love of metaphors (princes and princesses, fates, acting) and word-based humor. It felt nice and familiar, and reminded me that I’d missed that.
Plus, despite the occasional stupid plot turns (mostly relating to Ji-won, ugh, her), the main three characters are quite endearing. It’s to Yoo Yeon-seok’s credit that I still find Gun-woo adorable even though he pisses me off frequently, and Kang So-ra is so grounded that I’m just with her. Ultimately I’m still rooting for the main pair, because even when I feel a ping of satisfaction when she hurts him, I also realize that it’s not really very satisfying after all, because hurting him doesn’t get the two of them any closer to where I want them to be. Which is back to the whole warm and cozy ideal, where good characters being happy can still make for interesting drama. I know it’s possible! Make it happen!

okay okay the drama gave me a reason behind all the surprised, accidental, wide eye opened k drama kisses. If you are shocked your eyes should be wide opened. But in my case it is not that always, I generally close my eyes and cringe whether i am suddenly kissed or slapped :P

I need to know the reason for this obsession GW has with JW. Is she secretly a great person and only HE knows?
I do want to say that I am tired of second lead females being schemers and have terrible manners. What grown man is attracted to a brat? And really you can't tell that she is being fake with you? Does that make all men simple-minded oafs? If so, why would an awesome heroine be attracted so some one like that?
so many questions...

I don't think he's blindly in love -- I think he was, but that now JW is more like a bad habit that he has some reason not to give up, and we just don't know what it is yet.
But I admit, I'm a sucker for this show and the charms of the leads, second leads, ancillary characters, recipes, and location.

I think the lead is depicted as rather shallow / I think he was incredible in Answer Me but I didn't watch the show...
But that's how some people are - shallow and stupid
I dunno what's the deal with jiwon - probably she thinks he doesn't have much inheritance so she is not that keen to marry him. Yet she knows he is really into her so she enjoys his attention and care coz nobody else would...

Well it seems like he met her when he heard about his father. We still don't know what was that, just that he was crying. So maybe he clings to her coz she appeared during his hard time or something.

I've decided that rather than being frustrated by it making no sense, I'm going to make it up. I'll base it off of a quote in the Fitzgerald work The Rich Boy
Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand.
So here goes.
GW suffers from extreme separation anxiety due to his unstable upbringing. Mom was always more concerned with her man-of-the-moment than on parenting. And his father wanted nothing to do with him. So he was a latchkey poor-little-rich-boy. The concept of losing someone causes him extreme anxiety.
Like most of the uber-wealthy, his family keeps their physician on retainer. And they keep the relationship close to ensure confidentiality. (After all, physician's know all the dirty laundry.) So by extension, the family brought their physician's daughter into the family fold.
GW grew up being taught that marriage is nothing more than a business transaction. Wealthy women won't have him because he lacks money. JW's a safe bet. She's not so wealthy that she would be marrying-down to be with him. But she's also from the same social circle, so marrying her won't cause alienation from that circle.
And since he's been taught that marriages are more like mergers, love isn't to be expected. So the best he can hope for is a relationship that's interesting.
As a man he's normal. He wants the romantic playground that's created by a pretty face, a good challenge and low demands.
So he sees JW as a romantic playground. He interprets her behavior as standoffish playfulness, and doesn't see that he's only a backup plan to keep her occupied when she's not in a relationship. Or that her occasional advances are only made to keep him available.
And because of his damaged emotional landscape, he keeps himself willfully-blind to her true intentions. Because the alternative would mean separation. And separation scares the living daylight out of him.
He's part of an elite world that he can only remain in by the grace of his brother. If his brother doesn't support him financially, he'll lose his entire social circle. And the notion of building something from nothing - and the brutally hard work that it'll take to make it grow big - seems beneath him.
So his solution is to suspended reality by never growing up. It's the equivalent of when a young child covers their eyes and exclaims 'you can't see me!'
In quite the same way I've invented this backstory...LOL

Dear Ms. Gidget, I love your insight. It fills the story plausibly and gives a mechanic (and a backstory) to their madness. I am interested about what do you think about Jung-Joo, who is deprived in so many ways... even her family (cousin) ripped her off. I think she is the self-reliant people who are willing to put head, hearth and muscles to see her dreams come true, but her abandonment issues make me feel worry about her. Also worries me that she doesn't seem like a person who will abandon someone, but is abandoned instead (taking the pointy side of rejection, so to speak).
Again, what do you think?.

Here are my thoughts on GW's relationship with JW. When we first meet her, it's when he's out with all his HS friends and all of them want her to sit by them. She's that obnoxious queen bee from high school that all the boys threw themselves over, even though she treated them like crap. It seems like she's known GW's family for a long time, since she's calling his Hyung 'Oppa,' and I think that he developed his crush back when you act like you hate the one that you like and because all his friends liked her. JW pays him just enough attention to dangle that carrot and keep him stumbling after her. Because he still needs to grow up some, he's still thinking with his HS brain.
As far as JJ's interest in GW, I can totally understand it. He's been genuinely nice/kind to her on more than one occasion. When they first met, he gave her a watch, which is the only reason she was able to go to college, even though she was very smart. It helped develop a crush, which she kept nursing - that knight on a white horse that comes and rescues her - and now that they've met again, he still does genuinely nice things for her (when he isn't being an idiot and running after JW) - like give her his restaurant when she had nothing and was completely hopeless. Even though I want to smack him often because he's an idiot, I can still understand why she likes him.

To be honest, I think he doesn't really like her but he 'likes' how she's predictable and will always fall back on him. I thought it was already established that he knew that she was fake and a bad person. I think his habit of sticking to her is just because of insecurity, and real affection makes him nervous somehow.

I think it's more of the fact that all his life, he's mostly just taking scraps of genuine affection... there's such a shortage of genuine affection in his life that even the real crappy ones (from crappy girls with acting inabilities), he will take. It's all he has. Even though that girl is obviously dragging him around, he doesn't mind because at least the girl wants to keep him... sort of.
That aside, yoo yoon seok's acting is really proving to be of a very high quality. There are so many expressions on his face that just has such elaborate and multiple layers. He's really winging it. Also the chemistry of the leads has just won me over lately. They feel much more natural.

She sure got over it awfully fast. We were more mad on her behalf yesterday than she was herself today. While she forgave him way too easily, it must be because she believes she has no chance with him, so getting angry would be pointless. Is Gun Woo going to win me over every episode? His impromptu restaurant reservation was so sweet. I thought he was going to scold the little boy, who totally deserved it, but Grandma would have just taken her grandson's side again. How come he's not worried about Jung Joo becoming a haenyeo with her health when he would worry every time she sneezed? Wook was so cute when he suggested she blackmail him with his picture. As he already knows about Jung Joo's feelings for Gun Woo, he doesn't seem like the type to go after her, so I wonder if it's just going to be a silent crush. Thanks for the recap, javabeans!

Yes I agree - he is really enjoying the pain of being rejected and being made a fool ... But some guys are like that - and even some girls can't get away from abusers and expect people to understand. I don't.
It's a good thing to explore and later we shall see geun woo will realize his foolishness ...
Meanwhile I love poong ho - he is so cute - why don't they add him as third lead for JJ's affection?

The Hong sisters' strength has always been the touch of whimsy they've worked into their dramas... save for "Big", which I've pretty much buried in a grave next to the likes of "Level 7", "She's So Lovable", and other "WHAT THE EFFFF??" dramas that have been written and produced. Sigh. There are a lot of them in that graveyard, now that I think about it.
The magical aspects of their dramas really make them, as writers, special. It allows them to push the boundaries of K-dramas and themselves as writers. If they're writing without that piece, it really sends them into average territory.
Thankfully for this one, they have that cancer misunderstanding as a sort of stand-in for the whimsy.
Yoo Yeon-seok and Kang So-ra are really holding this thing together. I'm trying to imagine Kim Woo-bin in this role and blehhhh. Thank goodness he declined. Boy is not nearly as talented as Yoo. Nope. It's crazy how hard I'm rooting for Jung-joo and Gun-woo.
It's still a fun watch, so I'm definitely still aboard.

Agree!! Really like this drama, mostly because of YYS and KSR, they are literally BGW and LJJ, so talented and likeable. And their chemistry seems subtle and sweet at the moment but there is a feeling that any moment now they can step it up and burst the screen with another kind of chemistry, more intense!! Waiting for that to happen...

While I really like Kim Woo Bin (adore him!), I too wonder if he could pull off this level of cuteness, like YYS is doing. I think KWB is more suitable for bad boy roles, something about the way he looks, me thinks.

The Hong sisters are good when the touch of whimsy (when they don't overdo it), but at the same time, they have numerous flaws, many of which they keep repeating over and over again.
But every now and then, they come up w/ a really memorable character like Miho or Dokko Jin.

I hope the Mayor has a happy ending romance-wise too. Kim Sung-oh plays the part so well; and the hairstyle is so becoming on him.
I fear that his character may end up with Ji-won, as K-Dramas tend to tie up loose ends by pairing together everybody who's left behind. I hope they don't, Ji-won comes across as someone beyond redemption when it comes to meanness.

I love this drama, it defenitely match with the title. I feel warm and cozy when watching it, with no complex problem in it. Gun woo sometimes makes me frustated, but he still a cute boy and I am really waiting to see him start to fall in love with jung joo. The thing that I most dissapointed is, JI WON. Urgh does she have a heart made from poo? Everything about her is so bad and annoying. I also think the actress that plays Ji won really can't act. I always feel that her expression and the way she talks is so stiff, just like she was reciting a book or something. When she act, I tend to see that she is ACTUALLY acting, you know, not like she's in the real situation. When she was angry, or happy, I thougt "oh.. She was acting angry" or "she was acting happy" not like "oh, she's happy". That's really unfortunate because she is so pretty.

Yeah it's truly warm & Cosy. ....in name as well as nature. At least it doesn't drag as much as the first 4 eps, ep 5 and 6 have things happening even if we have to tolerate Ji Won.
and I finally figured out just what Ji Won's actress reminds me of. You know those really creepy gifs where the whole image is frozen but only one part moves? Her face is like that, when she talks only her mouth moves but the rest of her face looks frozen except her eyes.
It looks really unnatural and I end up wondering why they cast her, her voice is so monotone and her face can't form expression.

But they could cast a good actress to play a hateable character and it'd be better because then we could freely hate her without wondering why the eff she has that permanently stunned look, as if someone hit her in the face with a cartoon anvil.
To take a recent example, the actress playing the main villain in School 2015 is absolutely fantastic and actually adds to the experience by having me believe in her character fully.
It's a sad day when a teen drama slapped together in the space of a month has better villain casting than the Hong sisters. I mean, it's like they want to sabotage themselves or something.

While Gun-woo generally has Jung Joo's best interests at heart, he back pedaled on his kindness way too many times that I feel like it's trampled to the point of no recognition (okay that's a bit extreme). I am not a fan of people who cannot be considerate of others, and the scene where Jung Joo waited for Gun-woo in the cafe for God knows how long infuriated me! He couldn't call or text to let her know? He does these nice things for her and then completely ruins it, and while I will say that Jiwon is to blame for a lot of it, he's still a grown ass man who should be mature enough to handle at least a friendship decently.
It's going to take some more convincing for me to fully be on board for Gun-woo because the mayor is just hitting all the right spots for me to root for him. Can they do a makjang twist and have Gun-woo and Jung Joo actually be twins so the mayor wins out ... LOL I dunno but I hope the male lead improves because the drama as a whole isn't so bad but I don't find myself excited to watch the show.

So Gun Woo goes from nice but childish guy to complete ass.....good that Jung Joo did what we all wanted him to and gave him a good kick for messing with her.
I also join the club of those wishing that she and the mayor were the OTP of this drama. You get plenty of drama from him trying to hide an underwear model past and her trying to fit in on the island. And there are so many dramas recently where the hero is a nice and decent person, it would never get boring.
I mean Kill Me Heal Me, Misaeng, Pinocchio, even Heard it Through the Grapevine all had OTPs (ok Misaeng had no proper romance but you know Jang Geu Rae was a nice boy and not an ass to anyone) where the hero behaved like a decent person to the heroine and they were enjoyable dramas.....

Seriously, who thought she was a good idea? Although Gun-woo can be really awesome and charming, it's not enough to make up for his split personality around Ji-won (Aha, is it actually a secret personality disorder trope waiting to be explained???).

Maybe I was a little too hard yesterday. I love Ms. Kang So-Ra as a lead, the thing is that the male lead is written to be so convoluted and aggravating that I consider him unreedemable... and I haven't started about SWMNBN (whose actress hasn't shown a bit of acting).
But I love the rest of the show. Jeju Island seems to be a really beautiful place as scenery (so potent it becomes a character in some scenes), the Seoulite Aliens invading Jeju Island seems funny enough, love the Mayor trying to bring peace and understanding among the Aliens and the Earthlings, the cute and sophisticated writer (I still think of her as a sage like Kang-Ja), and especially Diver Noona and Black Pearl Hyung.
There is still a lot to love.

I enjoy watching this because the leads are likable and some of my favorite actors, but the Hong Sisters are really dropping the ball with Ji-Won. It's not even that she's an evil second lead; it's a tired trope, but sure, the show needs some conflict. No, it's that she's such a b*tch, and nothing else. It'd be tolerable if she were so bad but at least you could squint your eyes and see why she might be attractive to Gun-Woo; if she were fun but playfully cruel, or selfishly haughty with the touch of tsundere for Gun-Woo, I could maybe understand. Heck, if they showed that she was good at her job and not a leech with connections, I might understand. But no, she's the worst type: she's evil, and she's boring.

Master's Sun's Tae Yi-ryung (Ms. Kim Yoo-ri) was the second female lead in the last Hong Sister's drama before this one, and she felt cartoony at first, but then she became more earnest and I started to feel for her. She was written in a funny, sensitive and smart way... It must have been infuriating for Little Sun to be successful, rich, beautiful and glamorous but both the Chaebol and the man she loved were head over heels about a crazy and slovenly Big Sun. Big Sun with her worst game was still years ahead of the best Little Sun, so her jealousy and sense of superiority was so shick you could see it (in the form of a narcissistic ghost).
That was a superb second lead. It was funny, psychologicaly interesting, plausible and well acted. I don't see why we have gone to a 2D 2nd female lead.

I am going to die laughing at home Geun-woo gets so happy when telling the kid that he's gonna face the mayor's wrath. Like he's so thrilled he wouldn't be the only person in the black books wahahaha.
I think it was kinda telling in the start of the episode, when Geun-woo was talking to Poong Nam and was thinking about the whole push-and-pull with Ji-won from a strategic perspective. Sure, he's a total stupid fool in spite of the way she's treating him, but so far we haven't really seen him go out of his way to do something for her. He has no pride with asking for money, not even from Jung-joo, since that's what he's been doing his whole life with his elder siblings. But having to butter up the townspeople whom he has some sorta bad blood with, is really him going out of his comfort zone for Jung-joo's sake.
As much as Geun-woo is an idiot, I really can't help cracking at how self-absorbed he is some times. Episode 5's "My hair! I need to go to Seoul to do my hair!" and this kerfuffle about skincare products is pretty hilarious.
Uh, can someone explain the significance of sweet rice cakes and seaweed soup, in the context of test taking, please?
Haha and sorry hyung, sparkly suits aren't your thing. It's a teensy bit gay. Leave that Binnie, please! And I don't know but, how does calling her 'ahjumma' help with the courtship? haha.

There were those who thought that Gun-woo was not a "nice guy" and that he was just pretend-nice and really awful underneath but they couldn't be more wrong.
GW is a nice guy, or at least is nice (or trying to be nice) to Jung-joo, but due to his childishness/really short attention span and his pathetic infatuation/obsession w/ Ji-won, he ends up bailing on JJ numerous times when JW tugs at his leash - but he doesn't yet know/fully understand how much he is hurting JJ, thinking that they are just "buds" (there's actually more than that since GW twice has shortened his time w/ JW in thinking about JJ, but GW hasn't come close in putting 2+2 together).
As for the character of JW, she's the typical K-drama one-dimensional b!!ch (which the Hong sisters have the tendency to do) and she's soooo BORING.
As a character, JW would have been more interesting if she had been fleshed out into a multi-dimensional character (like a real person) w/ her pluses and minuses - giving more believability in GW's "love" for her and a bit more stakes when it comes to that particular love triangle. Or if JW is to be a complete b!!ch, at least have her be one that makes waves and not be a total bore.
But as it is, my eyes feel like closing anytime she's on screen and don't find the GW/JW interaction interesting at all (or for that matter, JW w/ anyone).
For that matter, while the fight btwn GW and JJ at the beginning was a bit entertaining (Kang So-ra is cute when she's mad/acts mad) but frankly, have a hard time in believing that JJ has been falling for GW (simply due t his nice gestures which, half of time, have gotten blown up by JW), find JJ's interactions/relationship w/ Mayor Wook more interesting w/ that pairing being more believable (tho we know it's not going to happen).
As an aside, there were those who thought that the actor playing Mayor Wook wasn't good-looking, but Kim Sung-oh is better looking (albeit a bit of a distinctive look) than a good no, of K-actors who have achieved leading man status and he's also a better actor than many of them w/ good comedic timing to boot (hope he gets his chance as a leading man at some point).
Also find big bro's interactions/relationship w/diver Hae-shil more interesting than the 2 leads (big bro's puffery and adamant denials to himself have been the comedic highpoint thus far).
Wish the Hong sisters would give Poong-san more to do.
Man, that diver ajumma's grandsons were so bratty and while it seems like the blogger/writer is going to have an increasing role, find her very annoying.
While W&C has its numerous flaws, at least it's now watchable (just want to erase the memory of the 1st 2 eps from my head).

Thank you for the recap!!!
Woohoo! Go, Jung Joo! Of course I’m sure it won’t last – I’m sure he’ll throw tantrum after tantrum and convince (see: manipulate) her into letting him stay. Because heaven forbid Jung Joo stick to her guns, or Gun Woo actually do some self-reflecting and see how his actions contributed to him getting kicked out.
Which leads me to ask: Is Gun Woo literally incapable of acknowledging when he does anything wrong, or when his actions hurt someone? Does he even know how to apologize? I get frustrated with him when he acts like an ass, but what makes me see bright red is that when someone calls him out on his assy behavior, he has the brass balls to act indignant, as though he honestly can’t understand why anyone would dare be mad at him for his actions. Seriously, his epitaph should just say “What Did I Do?”
I initially misinterpreted Wook’s speaking about his employee that he LIKED-Liked him. I was a little disappointed to learn that wasn’t the case, but since episode 5 I began thinking, “Dammit! Jung Joo needs a Sassy Gay Friend!

Couldn’t you just see that interaction?
JJ: Gun Woo was so concerned that I was sick when I came home the other night. He made me tea!
SGF: Yeah, after he was the one who kicked you so he could feed your abalone to the girl who’s full of baloney. Newsflash, sweetie! When someone puts a band-aid on you, it doesn’t make them Florence Nightingale if they’re the one who cut you in the first place!
Sorry, but GW’s bouts of niceness here and there don’t really make up for his jerky and immature behavior the rest of the time, at least not for me. Just once, I want to hear an honest-to-god apology from him, because at this point, I honestly doubt even knows how to do that.
Like I have said before, unless something seriously changes in Gun Woo’s personality, I’m not on board this ship.

Someone please send JW far away. Very very far away. And then someone hit Gun Woo in the head multiple times.
I have never hated a second female lead as much as I have hated JW.
Something about her face makes me wanna chuck her off of the nearest cliff.

I think part of why Geon Woo is an ass to Jung Joo is because he considers her his twin and donggap. So most of the time he has no clue How deeply he's hurting her but we are incensed on her behalf cuz we are parley to her feelings!
In other news Frozen Face is the worst Second Lead scheming boitch ever!!

The worst part of JW is that she is not even "scheming" in that she does not seem to have a motivation for her nastiness. She just stands there looking bitter and treats the people around her with disrespect for no clear reason. Other second leads who fall in the "nasty" category are often motivated by envy, greed, or ambition. JW seems to have plenty of opportunity for career advancement on her own talents and a rich boy so in love with her that he opened a restaurant just to catch her attention. She does not seem to be thwarted in any of her ambitions (except maybe a crush on hyung), so her unpleasantness is thoroughly off putting because it just seems to be her natural personality. ICK!

She would win Worst Second Female Lead ever!
Goodness I have had plenty bad SFL examples but this one takes the cake. Because, 1) I can't stand her acting, 2) I don't know her purpose in the story and why anyone thought it's such a good idea to cast her and make her second lead, 3) she makes GW from reasonably cute, nice guy to blind, stupid, ignorant jerk and she can even switch GW's character in a second, 4) like AnyDramaWillDo said, she doesn't have any motivation why she's this bitchy. No clear reason, no explanation. She just there, to be the main obstacle for our OTP.

ugh this episode was decent until jiwon turned up. why can't this drama be about two friends moving to jeju to start again?? by opening a restaurant?? jung joo and gun woo can be so cute together. and I was so ready to forgive gun woo before jiwon showed up and he abandoned Jung joo again. sigh. I'm torn on the ending. as much as I want Jung joo to tell gun woo to step up or get out, I worry about the restaurant without him! Jung joo has already shown she can't manage without him.
also I'm still wondering how on earth you can make pizza dough so quickly. you need to let the dough rise to double its size which takes a looooong time and then you need to knead it again before rolling it out. unless I'm doing it wrong....

I was thinking the same, but hey, by our logic Gun Woo won't be able to give JJ mandarin tea so quickly too in ep 5. Because the recipe says the mandarin/lemon should be put in refrigerator for 3 days and then you can squeeze it.. If I'm not mistaken.
For pizza though, I just assume GW has the dough already and only need to knead and roll out..

Actually, that's how I make pizza dough. Mix it up (I don't even knead it, really), let it rest 20 minutes, then press it into a greased pan, and go! Tasty and good. From what I've read the flavor would be better if I let it sit multiple hours - up to a day or so, but I never think of making it that far ahead of time.

I suppose I am in the minority, but I am loving this drama. Yes, even the frustration of GW. I like how flawed he is. I am tired of the perfect, rich, chaebol male lead. That has been overdone so many times, I would've been ghastly dissapointed if the Hong sisters did that here.
People have to look at the optics. Gun Woo is a guy who has never had a real loving healthy relationship.
Father - Never been in his life
Mother - No real relationship there
Siblings - More like parents trying to usher him in the right direction
His denseness is probably a coping mechanism. He's rich by association, and even that isn't stable considering each of his siblings are only half siblings. So far, Jung Joo has offered him stability. She came back to Jeju, they live together, work together. I know it is frustrating to watch him ignorantly moving along so far, but this is simply all new to him.
As far as Ji Won, it makes perfect sense that he would be drawn to the dysfunction. He is absolutely NOT in love with her. He's in love with the fact that no matter how evil they are to each other, she always comes back. It's just that simple. That small act of checking on him, and returning is enough for him to feel wanted, by anyone, even someone as evil as Ji Won.
Which is why, already he is affected tremendously by Jung Joo. It's hard for some to see it, because we are used to dramas taking the formula approach. He should be head over heels with Jung Joo by now. He is, but in typical male fashion, he doesn't realize it. However, those closest to him can see it. That is why Poong San kept asking him if he was only being nice to her, and close to her because he thought she was dying. He is changing. Even his hyung's secretary noticed how he listens to Jung Joo. Be patient with this drama, this story is slowly coming into that epic love story territory, we just can't rush it.

I really like your thought process! We saw that Geun-woo doesn't actually love Ji-won (he focused on worrying about Jung-joo instead of enjoying a date with Ji-won last episode) but I totally see how he can't let go of Ji-won's not letting go of him.
It's not that she's a nice person, but that she will predictably keep tending her fish (the guys in her pond) so Geun-woo knows what he can do to not 'lose her.' Makes sense that he wants stability and predictability than love in that case.
Also, he really is a different sort of character than all the previous heroes - instead of cold/hurt/pride with a inner heart of gold (see!? the ESSENCE of the person was GOOOOOD), this one is frivolous and nice with an actually messed up inside.

Gotta agreed with you. I like that how the Hong sisters poking fun on their hero by having the exact opposite of typical drama hero's characteristic. I find it a bit refreshing though sometime Geun-woo made me want to punch him so hard for Jung-joo's sake. Kinda admitted though I missed the craziness and thrilled over a Hong sisters' drama, at same time I'm welcoming the different approach they come with. Fingers crossed this one ends well, if not better.

I think u are in the majority, few people don't like the drama.itselF. Just people expressing their frustration about geun woo's actions or ji wons. Plus i think we have been really hard on geun woo and he doesn't deserve it. He is such a nice guy..always thinking about jeong joo and never hesitates degrading himself to make her look good. We are mad why? Cause he "likes" a bad girl? The dude has issues obviously plus we cant dictate our heart who to liKe. And as viewers we watch the drama with all the information in mind, something that doesn't apply to the characters. Like geun woo, why does he have to know jeung joos feelings for him? She never showed him directly or said anything, she is a preety closed person emotionallY.

I don't think people have issues with him just for liking a bad girl. I think his relationship hit a whole new dysfunctional level when he flat out said he knows how messed up she is and that he will be messed up right back - intentionally mean. He's saying he will love her forever no matter what and no matter whom she ends up with and that he's aware that they're intentionally mean to each other. That's far beyond disliking who he likes.
The other main issue is that he's not just a nice guy. He does some really nice things but then he's an ass in the next breath. There are many people who have very nice sides and then very not nice sides. It's people who can be nice consistently that are worth keeping around. If I had someone in my life who dropped me or let me down as often as him I'd be hurt to, and I don't just mean someone I had a crush on, I mean even a friend. He's often self-involved and inconsiderate and has gone back on his word a plethora of times.
I think it's more that if he weren't so charming in his moments of kindness, and cute, that everyone else would have sent him packing long ago.

Seriously, I'm glad for the reduction in Ms Botox Face's screen time. It's like someone got the memo that the drama is better without her in it.
It's a shame that she's the second female lead and can't just be written right off, I'd rather see more of Hae-shil/Hyung and the diver ajummas than her.
And also, right now I am struck hard by Second Lead Syndrome and wishing like hell Jung-joo could just marry the cute mayor instead and be adorable with him forever. But no, apparently the Hong sisters are holdouts against the trend for nice-boy heroes, and Jung-joo must end up with the manchild who messes with her.

I agree with your thoughts about the writing being really lazy. The boy-grandma-restaurant plot was oddly inserted - the boy didn't have good direction (where was his younger brother? why is he just sitting there shooting instead of playing cops/robbers or whatever activity, why does he have a bb gun instead of a ipad or smartphone to play games on? where is his mom?), the diver-grandma's ridiculous and immediate anger at Geun-woo, her accepting the ridiculous save-face of Geun-woo's reservation at the restaurant.. It was just awkward and the kids' clamor (eww smelly! yum, awesome!) was just..... **roll eyes.
Then the PPL for the cosmetic, and the electric car, where Kang Sora looked as though she was freezing in the wind as she nods enthusiastically "oh yea this car is so awesome"
Sigh...I haven't watch a drama before where the writing was so empty. It makes me think that the other Hong sister is writing as head writer for this drama, and the smart Hong sister is the one who is peppering the town and B-couples with humor and sweetness. The patchwork seams are obvious and Hae-shil/Hyung are so much better written (for their short screen times) than the main leads.

So far I find the plot somehow refreshing. It is funny to watch a drama and not root for the male lead, Gun-woo is a nice man-child but he does not deserve Jung-joo, she should date the major, haha!
However, I miss the Hong Sisters touch in some aspects. They used to be outstanding not only with comedy or fantasy, but also creating romantic tension between the leads. Most of my favorite romantic kdrama moments come from their dramas, like You are beautiful or even Big (despite of the mess that it was, some moments between Gong Yoo and Lee Min Jung were magical).
Btw, KSR and YYS are great actors, they bring the characters to life. At the end of the episode you could tell that Jung-joo had been crying, I felt so bad for her. And I want to slap Gun-woo because he is such an idiot...I am looking forward to see more of them together and hope that Gun-woo falls for her soon, it's going to be fun :D

Overall, I am enjoying this drama And thanks for the recaps too! (Even though I still go back to watch the episode ;) I'm surprised the Hong sisters is making Ji Won the typically second lead/mean girl. I thought it would be somewhat different--her role. On another note, is it just me or is Seo Yi An just a horrible actress in this drama? So many wierd pauses and expressions, it throws off the scene.

I love this drama, the characters are so cute and it makes me feel warm and cozy >_< I like Jung-joo's character, she's a good person and hardworking while her personality is very genuine. She doesn't annoy me or acts too much. I love Gun-woo's character too.
He's adorable, sweet and nice. Also, he's kind of messed up inside (probably to do with his 19th birthday) and I like how at first you assume the reason he's so fixated on Ji-won is because he's naive and blinded by the girl however no it turns out his eyes have been open the whole time. I finally understood what they meant by him being 'a lazy grasshopper lacking affection'. He's not in love with Ji-won. To quote him, "It's easier when you can see her intentions and the answer." There. He said the word. EASY.
But he's definitely already in love with Jung-joo (doesn't realise it though). He is probably not going to react well to her telling him to leave knowing he's a little messy on the inside.

I’m so proud of this show and the writers/producers!!! I’m black and I’ve been watching Korean Dramas for over a decade now and for the very first time a black person has a role that is not demeaning In a Korean Drama! Not only that he had a lot of speaking lines as well!! Bravo to the writers!!!

Yes - ditto on the black person speaking in the Korean language very well!
What I love: all the other characters and their stories. Would love to know more about the mayor, lady diver, and GWs hyung. And of course the eccentric blogger.
What doesn't work so much: GWs "cluelessness" and JW - everything about her character - I don't really care to know why she's so great and why GW likes her. Unless she cured cancer or saved an entire starving country from a ruthless dictator - I am begging the writers to not spend another moment, more than I already have -lol. She's a good actress though - she makes me want to slap her.
GW - time to grow up and be a man! Don't wait too long. JJ is freaking awesome..
