Running Man: Episode 244

Spring is the air and our cast readies themselves for the next big chapter of their lives: marriage. Little do they know that there’s a dangerous couple seeking to win and it’s up to them to prevent that from taking place. Although really, the most dangerous couple is the least of their problems when they’re paired with beautiful ladies whose competitive spirits could earn them a license to kill.

EPISODE 244. Broadcast on April 26, 2015.

It’s a spring wedding for our guys today, as they wait for their future partners aka today’s guests. Rapper Jessi greets Jae-suk and asks the crew, smiling, “Are we getting married?”

Everyone’s jaws drops at the sight of actress Kim Yoo-ri (Kill Me, Heal Me), and Jae-suk points out that Suk-jin is happier today than he was at his own wedding. Gary is flushed pink at seeing actress Seo Ye-ji (Superdaddy Yeol), and AOA’s Choa is a perfect match for Haha.

Jessi’s strong personality grabs the guys’ attention, and Jae-suk blurts out that she was far prettier during her former Jessica H.o days (and had monolids). Gary advises that he tread carefully lest he end up mentioned in a diss track.

Aw, Kwang-soo looks spiffy in his tux. His face immediately falls when Ji-hyo struts towards him like a boss. When she tosses the bouquet at him, he kicks it away.

But at least he isn’t paired with the most unique personality of the bunch, comedienne Jang Do-yeon, introduced via dubstep. Did… Jong-kook just take a literal step back?

Time to take their vows: Will the grooms love their brides even when the ladies tear off their nametags? The guys answer a resounding “yes” — except for Kwang-soo, who does so only after Ji-hyo calls him out on it.

The brides are asked if they vow to love their grooms even when faced with punishment? Jessi and Ji-hyo are the only ones to hesitate. No one has any objection to any of the marriages, and then Jong-kook and Do-yeon exchange nods before ripping off other grooms’ nametags.

One hour earlier. Jong-kook and Do-yeon sat down with Taek PD, who informed them that they are today’s most dangerous couple. Mention off the wedding has Do-yeon immediately think of the wedding night, words she immediately apologizes for.

The pair initially has trouble swallowing the concept of eliminating all the other couples right off the bat during the opening, but we know they hit their cue at “speak now or forever hold your peace.” And technically, that means they’ve won.

In the present, Taek PD acknowledges that the other couples must be feeling pretty awful, so they’ll be given a chance to change their fate in this Dangerous Couple Race. How? By turning the clocks back 10 hours earlier that morning, and later enter one of two wedding halls. Those who enter the one Jong-kook and Do-yeon aren’t in will be today’s victors.

Conversely, should Jong-kook and Do-yeon gather everyone into the same wedding hall will secure their victory. For now, the dangerous couple does nothing and leaves the invitations to read Wedding Hall A.

Thus we turn back the clocks to 8 AM, where Yoo-ri tells Suk-jin that this is her first variety show appearance ever. She’s feeling some first-time jitters, which is when Jae-suk pulls up to rap freestyle to the other car. Before Yoo-ri can spit back a retort, he drives off.

Gary has Ye-ji giggling in their car by mentioning that he and Suk-jin put on cologne today to impress the pretty guests. The sunny weather puts Haha and Choa in a good mood too, and Do-yeon stops Jong-kook’s long-winded explanation by saying that their “lips must meet” aka they’re on the same page.

Cut to: Ji-hyo and Kwang-soo, who drive in silence. LOL.

Our first mission takes place at a warehouse where the guys must protect the raw eggs they carry in each hand. The ladies must either protect their men or break another team’s eggs. Jessi starts removing her sweater, which prompts Haha to tell her not to go starting a fight. It’s her husky voice and accent that makes her words sound more aggressive, Jae-suk says defensively.

When Haha says that it’s impossible to crack an egg inside one’s fist, Kwang-soo immediately puts that to the test. It cracks, the yolk flies into Jessi’s hair, and Kwang-soo feels super apologetic. I mean, you can get yolk out, but is Kwang-soo’s hand okay?!

Aha, so the constant reference to the “this is a competition!” line harks back to Jessi going off on Unpretty Rapstar, a music program on Mnet. She assures Jae-suk that she’s ready to go, and Do-yeon again stops Jong-kook’s nagging with a touch paired with a compliment.

At the same time, Kwang-soo informs Ji-hyo that she has to get her finger inside someone’s palm to crack the egg.

It’s chaos as soon as the whistle blows when Yoo-ri jumps on Jae-suk. Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo join the fray, and the noise draws the other teams in (except Jong-kook and Do-yeon). Kwang-soo makes a run for it, but Ye-ji tails him down and crushes the egg in his hand.

Gary has five women all clamoring to grab the eggs or protect him, and hehe, the caption reads: “Must be… nice?” Jessi punches his fist to break one, and Jong-kook and Do-yeon are just around the corner witnessing the entire exchange.

Just as Gary gets away, Do-yeon gains on him with Jessi coming from the opposite end. Jessi resorts to punching his clenched fist again, and when Choa joins in, she starts tickling Gary. In the end, however, there’s a distinct crunching sound of the broken egg.

The remaining four couples have a strategy pow-wow about how to beat Jong-kook… or at least try to because Jessi goes straight for Suk-jin. She punches his hand, and yeah I’m going to bet that really hurts.

Do-yeon hops on him not long afterwards, and then Suk-jin stuffs the egg into his mouth. Oh no, what if it cracks in there? And that’s exactly what Jessi does by stuffing her fingers into his mouth. Thankfully Suk-jin spits it out, but seriously girl—that could’ve gone either way.

I have to say I’m not a fan of calling an attack like that a wise one (although the cast still laughs on camera). Already I’m worried about Jessi’s more aggressive behavior here, mostly because I don’t see her pull back enough to realize that she’s still playing a game. It’s most worrisome if this group ends up playing the nametag ripping game, and let me tell you—I’ve seen people try to play said game with lax rules firsthand, and things get ugly rrreeallll quick.

Speaking of which, Haha turns out to be the next target, but then Jae-suk trips and falls, losing both of his eggs. We skip ahead to when Haha and Kwang-soo are down to one egg whereas Jong-kook is still going strong with two.

Off in the corner, Yoo-ri acknowledges that she hardly ever exercises, and she’s just as quiet as Ye-ji who keeps smiling. Jae-suk still hasn’t forgotten how Jessi called him “Jae-hyuk” in her haste earlier—turns out it’s her manager’s name.

Haha and Do-yeon’s brawl soon catch their attention, and Do-yeon gives him a literal kick to the butt to get him moving. Someone in a red hoodie turns the corner… oh, it’s Kwang-soo, who gets outed right away.

Wow, these ladies are no joke with pulling Kwang-soo towards them and a flying high kick at his arm. A butt kick sends Kwang-soo and his cracked egg to the floor. Do-yeon feels super bad for it afterwards and even offers Kwang-soo to kick her back (he doesn’t).

Jong-kook finally enters the arena and flips Haha over. Do-yeon follows up to crack his egg, giving them the win. When Jessi calls for a Round 2, Yoo-ri softly says the store still needs to conduct business.

Second place gives Haha and Choa an opportunity to see their own invitation and change wedding halls. But it’s first place Jong-kook and Do-yeon who can again confirm everyone’s invitations and make switcharoos. While everyone points the finger of blame at each other, Jong-kook goes ahead to switch everyone to Wedding Hall B.

Jong-kook is careful to climb into the car when he finds Do-yeon dozing inside. By noon, our teams arrive at a boxing ring, and Jae-suk shares Jessi’s rare surname (Ho) with the group. Ye-ji quietly joins the group, and after Gary tries talking her up, the other grooms step in to brag about their teammates.

Upon Do-yeon’s prompting, Jong-kook shares about her catnap earlier. Do-yeon says she was simply resting her eyes because she was waiting up for him. The phrasing makes it sound like she’s waiting up for her newlywed hubby, and when the conversation steers towards her appearance on Truth Game as a Park Jung-ah look-alike, she says she looks more like actor Goo Bon-seung.

Entitled “Tell Me Something,” one must feed clues to prompt their teammate into saying a phrase in the shortest amount of time. If incorrect, a tray will hit their heads. Jessi and Jae-suk are up first and this kind of sentence-guessing makes Jessi particularly nervous given her conversational Korean skills.

But the more she hesitates, the more agitated everyone gets to just start the game already. She immediately looks downcast at Jae-suk’s first clue — a criticism of her rapping skills — at which point she’s reminded that it’s just a game. Her first retort: “You’re ugly.”

It looks like a vein in Jae-suk’s neck is about to burst by the time they try again, but because Jessi has trouble wrapping her head around the concept, Jae-suk bows out for now.

I’m thinking it’s going to be pretty tough to get Kwang-soo to tell Ji-hyo that she’s “like an angel.” Jae-suk takes a moment to point out Jong-kook’s tough-looking stance, which prompts the Tiger to ask if they should continue this elsewhere.

When Suk-jin grows meek after getting caught making a few attack gestures behind his back, the others have to tell him that he’s the hyung— he can totally order Jong-kook around if he wanted to.

Ji-hyo starts off by asking what kind of woman Kwang-soo thinks she is. He answers, “a bit of a jerk” which of course, is incorrect. So she tries a different angle by asking what type of girl he usually likes. Upon hearing that Kwang-soo likes petite women, Do-yeon asks if he’d like someone like Park Na-rae, another comedienne.

Ji-hyo tries another approach by talking about things in the sky like the sun and stars, and Kwang-soo answers: “Noona, I want you.” LOLL. He gets a little closer with Ji-hyo’s surname (Chun) by saying “I wish you were like an angel,” but he keeps getting hit over the head until finally landing on the answer.

Gary sits down with Ye-ji (who has to get “You’re really off-the-wall” out of him) but her constant giggling just makes him compliment her. He’s paying more attention to her voice than guessing at the correct phrase, and eventually asks the production crew for seven minutes because he’s seriously enjoying this.

He gets hit by the tray so often that at one point, it falls off and Jong-kook and Kwang-soo offers to do it manually. Even when he does land on the right answer, they hit him with the tray anyway with Jessi’s prompting.

Haha and Choa guess their phrase in 64 seconds, and Jong-kook grows more frustrated by the second when Do-yeon has trouble guessing “Oppa, marry me.” They get it eventually, and now Jessi has seen enough to try it out again.

She starts off strong with “Get lost!” but Jae-suk is looking for that line from her outburst: “Who are you to judge me?” Her next guess criticizes him (“Do a proper job as an MC!”) and even Jong-kook, who’s usually quick on the uptake, has trouble deciphering Jae-suk’s roundabout explanations.

They encourage her to guess in English if it’s too difficult for her to guess in Korean, at which point Jessi yells, “JYP!!” They decide to turn the tables to have Jae-suk guess, and Jessi simply gestures at him.

Jae-suk keeps throwing out incorrect answers which earns him a hit every single time. It isn’t until Jessi says it’s in English does he finally spit out “Are you crazy?” at the three minutes and eight second mark.

Yoo-ri’s phrase is rather apt given her Kill Me, Heal Me run (“Are you suffering from DID?”) and her abrupt personality shifts leaves the others in goosebumps. She even starts doing a cutesy Ahn Yo-na impression… and now I miss Ahn Yo-na.

After some time, Suk-jin gets closer and closer to the phrase. Hahaha, I can hear Yoo-ri telling him, “I thought you said you watched ‘Kill Me, Heal Me’!” He finalllllyyy gets it at the two minute and 58 second mark.

Second place team Gary and Ye-ji check their own invitation and change wedding halls. Haha and Choa are surprised to see that Jong-kook hadn’t changed their invitation. They decide to leave it be.

After another reminder to the dark fate before them, it’s now three hours until the dangerous wedding. Jae-suk mentions that Jessi’s manager scolded her for uploading a picture of her RM nametag up on Twitter (before news broke out), which makes her flustered once more.

Do-yeon’s been feeling outshined as the comedienne today, so the group gives her an opportunity to do a Jessi impersonation. It’s a parody of that Unpretty Rapstar clip when Jessi expressed her disgruntlement to her fellow competitors. Do-yeon gets every detail right, even Jessi’s habit of licking her lips.

You can tell Jessi’s holding her tongue, but it really is a pretty good impression. Then the game: the ladies will pull their male teammates across the soapy surface to the finish line.

Jessi doesn’t recognize Jae-suk at first glance without his glasses, and accidentally hits him in the family jewels when her foot slips. As soon as the whistle blows, Jong-kook starts to do sit-ups to help Do-yeon pull him across.

He seems to have the lead, and instead of stopping him, Choa runs over to stop Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo. All it takes is a finger in his jaw for Kwang-soo to scream in pain and now the delay has helped Jong-kook and Do-yeon to push ahead.

Jessi makes an attempt by swiping a towel, and although both Jong-kook and Kwang-soo approach the finish line, it’s Kwang-soo who crosses over first.

The remaining couples play another round for second place. Jae-suk and Jong-kook are neck-and-neck (or butt-and-butt?), and in a last-ditch effort, Jessi falls on Jong-kook. It doesn’t work, and Jong-kook and Do-yeon snag second place.

As the most dangerous couple, Jong-kook and Do-yeon are allowed to see and switch all the invites to their liking. Suk-jin says he always watches these moments on TV, and Jae-suk says he’s already preparing for next week’s episode.

Jong-kook keeps the invitations to Wedding Hall B, and now Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo contemplate whether to keep or change their location. If they do, they could become our victors…

Once again it’s 6 PM, and Jae-suk and Jessi head up to Wedding Hall B. So do the other couples, who then realize that it’ll either be Jong-kook and Do-yeon or Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo. If Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo walk through those doors, then that’ll be the end of it and history will repeat itself.

Speaking of whom, Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo head upstairs and enter the wedding hall… that’s completely empty. Yayyy, so she did change the location. Also wow, Ji-hyo really does have the best luck.

That makes our Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo couple our winners, who head downstairs to greet the others. With that, the two walk down the aisle towards wedded bliss and a lifetime of noona keeping her younger husband in line.

there were parts of this episode where i laughed so hard i literally choked -- when JSJ choked when the raw egg broke in his mouth (what possessed him to pop it in there is beyond me); Ha-ha and Kwang-soo being MAULED by the girls; YJS running into a freezer and dropping his eggs in shock while fleeing from his pursuer.

during the egg smashing game, the girls seem to be operating in this mode: Hit first, Apologize later.

KJK's partner was funny, determined and a tad overwhelming at times, but her Jessi impersonation was spot on :D

I totally agree! It's been a while since I laughed so hard...great episode with funny guests. Do Yeon's Jessi impression made me laugh so hard.

So many great moments with Jessi...she's so cute in her own way, and really different than the typical pretty and submissive guest (which EVERYONE here bitches about). Favorite moment is when she got hit my the tray and says "Oh Shh-" and EVERYONE starts laughing and telling her she can't swear on SBS. Also how she accidentally smacks Do Yeon in the chest and thinks she didn't touch anything....HELP LOL

I never comment but feel obligated to with the massive amount of hate below...just chill. Jessi's been in the industry for years, has been through lots of shit, and is just making a come back. Her stardom from Unpretty Rapstar is propelling her to fame -- it seems like most Koreans who know her aggressive tough girl image do like her. I thought she was funny, and she really made this episode. Yeah, she stuck her hands in JSJ's mouth to crack the egg, but all the other female guests were trying to crack it too (albeit without stuffing their fingers in his mouth). She just had a hard time understanding the rules, which I get as well as someone with English first language and "home" language as a second language. Take it easy everyone!

I hope Jessi comes back, she's variety fodder (just gotta help her understand some ground rules first though).

I did not like Jessi on this episode. She's too aggressive but not in a fun this-is-still-a-game kind of way. And she really seemed angry at the impressions of her.

But I liked the rest of the couples and I love when Kwang Soo and Ji Hyo are paired together!

Kwang Soo And Ji Hyo are the cutest couple in RM, he's a gentleman the towel scene its really cute.
They are really comfortable together.
And from Jae Suk words, Kwang Soo was dating girls Short And Glamorous, in my mind Lee Yu Bi.

I 'awwwwed' pretty loudly when he gave the towel to Ji Hyo =) They have such an awesome noona-dongsaeng relationship which warms my heart! Though pretty much the whole cast cares for each other ♥

Ah that reminds me of the episode with the Birth of a Beauty cast and Wang Ji Hye tattling about Kwang Soo and his past confession to a co star xD

After the last game when they were both wet (and maybe cold) from the water. When they stepped forward to change their invitation Kwang Soo got a towel from the crew (I think) and he put it around Ji Hyo's shoulders instead using it himself ;)

i don't understand why kwang soo didn't follow Lee Yu Bi on Twitter or Instagram, if they were in a relationship before, maybe they hate each other now. He follows all his Friends or ex drama workers on twitter.
He follows Lee Sung Kyung (his girlfriend in It's Ok Thats Love) on twitter and Instagram.
Its really strange..........................

Echo the love of Jihyo-Kwangsoo pairing. They need to be paired up more often, their dynamics is hilarious. It's ridiculous how this was only the second (?) time they were paired up in nearly 5 years. I'd love to see more Jihyo-Jaesuk and Jihyo-Jongkook too. I don't think SpartAce have ever being paired up together ever except for that one time chasing team.

I don't mind the aggressiveness of Jessi or JK's teammate but I have a problem with the Yellow girl, like what the hell was she doing in that drag and pull game? I got that Jihyo and Kwangsoo probably won in a practice round (based on last ep's preview, Jihyo was ahead when Jessi stamped her leg on Kwangsoo's chest) and that might have intimidated her, but still there's no reason to hinder them instead of the red team if she wanted any chance to win the wedding hall game.

i disagree with you big time. Jessi was hilarious!
You need to accept that not everyone in Korea is miss good two-shoes on camera.

at least she is herself. Most females on variety shows show a fake image, trying to please the public

Think Jessi is getting a bit of a bad rap.

Yeah, she could be a bit annoying at times, but some of that was just amplified by her loud, husky voice and non-total fluency of Korean.

Overall, didn't think she was that bad (although not my type of guest) and she did bring some energy and action to an otherwise limp group of female guests (aside from Do-yeon when she was awake).

RM had a pretty good run w/ its large, all-female guests, but this was a pretty weak group for variety.

Yoor-ri - not only a newbie, but not much of a talker and not athletic at all (her best part was flustering Suk-jin w/ her appearance in the bridal gown and YJS's quip about how Suk-jin seems happier than at his wedding); she seems nice, but w/ her quiet personality and aversion to exercise/physical activity, not exactly RM material.

Ye-ji - cute, but a known introvert; likewise, her best contribution was making Gary all flustered and smitten.

Choa - can't really remember her doing much of anything either.

With the other groups of all-female guests, had a nice blend of physical activity and verbal banter (a no. were particularly good w/ a witty quip).

And Do-yeon (man, is she all arms and legs) - while she did physical comedy and impersonations, she wasn't exactly strong with the verbal banter/quips.

I really liked Jessi, she's a strong lady who I feel is a bit more entertaining than some of the idols and actresses who seemed to be really well trained for variety shows as they never really do anything out of the normal, she's fierce but not in a bad way I liked her interactions with the cast I mean she didn't do anything bad whats the problem, people seriously need to lighten up more...

I don't think it's a matter of "lightening up". Every now and then a guest just rubs people the wrong way, and this week it looks like it was Jessi. I know my husband couldn't stand her either, and even stopped watching the episode, despite this being the only Korean show of mine he'll actually watch with me. Thankfully next week looks like a fun episode, so hopefully I'll be able to hook him again!

I totally agree. She's real and totally hilarious. She doesn't look to keep a perfect image. This episode was as hilarious as it was because of Jessi and KJK's partner. The other girls didn't have much impact. Even Ji Hyo didn't do much as she tends to hang back more when there are a lot of female guests.

I wasn't trying to say I didn't like Jessi- I mostly don't have an opinion about her one way or the other. But for this episode, I didn't enjoy her interactions very much. Part of it was her brash personality and aggressiveness in the games- something of which isn't very common for RM, even with more aggressive guests. RM is typically for entertainment rather than just the winning of the games and most guests seem to understand this, but Jessi was very hardcore about it. The egg thing I didn't feel was her fault, Suk Jin put it in his mouth and therefore the consequences basically rest with him. But that wasn't the only time she was super aggressive. As for her not understanding the phrase game, I felt bad for her actually, and wished the rest could explain it to her better. But even then, this show is stillobviously for entertainment. I guess all in all I just didn't like how loud and brash she was, but that's something that goes for any guest that has ever been that loud and brash, not just her. I wanted to laugh with her but instead of laughing, I felt frustrated with her.

I don't have a problem with Jessi but I don't see her having a lasting career in the Kpop or variety world. She tries way to hard to be the Tough girl. I understand she is a rapper and she's trying to show that she's not some idol who is pretending but it just comes off as being aggressive and just having a bad attitude in general. She should not have shoved her fingers in Ji suks mouth, he really could have choked on the egg. I feel bad and I really want to give her a chance because I know she has waited a really long time to be in the spot light. But I really think she just doesn't have a very likable personality. She was not well received on unpretty rapstar because of her attitude and the whole point of the show was to show how tough and skilled they were at rapping. She just takes it too far. She doesn't know when to chill out.

Jessi's a bit of a tough call - based on her general actions I thought she was a recent arrival in Korea, not someone who'd lived there for a decade.

A lot of the things that happened in this episode that cast Jessi in a questionable light are things that flag as culture clashes for me. YJS critiquing her eye surgery, for instance, would not be considered remotely okay in the US. And the hosts would be expected to police some of the games - like Ji Suk Jin putting the egg in his mouth? He's the regular cast member, she might've thought that he expected someone to then try to break it - a lot of the things that are considered funny in Korean variety don't translate in other cultures.

Of course, based on the "guess the phrase" game, Jessi also doesn't figure things out too quickly, so there's that too. But - why didn't someone just try to tell her in English (other than KJK)? It's not like the rules of the game were secret, and she clearly was not confident about a game that looked like it would rely on a good knowledge of Korean.

Jessi looks like she's trying, but she's aware that things are flying over her head and it undermines her confidence. So she tries her hardest, but then no one explains games to her, or they encourage others to mock her through mimicry, and she can sense she's missing cultural cues. Other US-Korean transplants seem to have made the transfer a lot more seamlessly, Jessi is unfortunately the other side of the scale.

I completely agree with everything you've said. It's weird because looking at Jessi on RM and from Unpretty Rapstar clips, it really seems like she's freshly moved from America to Korea, not a performer who has been in Korea for a decade as you said. I definitely think a lot of her brashness comes from culture clash, and there's clearly a language barrier as evident through the phrase-guessing game but also other parts in the episode as well, where she very naturally slips into English. And I think what you said about not being able to pick up on the nuances of the culture/language affecting her self-confidence and the way Jessi comports herself is totally true as well. I thought KJK was really kind to her in this episode, and like you, I'm surprised the staff or somebody didn't help her out in the phrase game and other moments where there seemed to be a clear lack of communication/understanding on Jessi's part.

I understand all of your comments and I agree with you. Her Korean is probably part of the reason for her reactions and miscommunication but I'm gonna play the bad guy here, she CHOSE to pursue a career in Korea. No one forced her. If that was her dream for the past 10+ years why wouldn't she focus all of her attention on learning the language? There are plenty of artist who have been forced to learn new languages. Back in the day both BoA and DBSK were forced to live in Japan so they could learn Japanese faster. She was already a singer and appeared on shows in her early career. So she knows how to act and should be able to understand the culture after 10 years.

Some people aren't good at languages, so there's that, but just in Running Man history we've got Fabien and Nichkhun, neither of whom knew Korean when they arrived and I don't think either of them have Korean family members. Jessi may be like a lot of my friends, whose Korean parents describe them as knowing "second-grade Korean", basically being on the speech level of an eight year old.

Obviously if she wants a presence in Korea that goes beyond producing music and relying on interpreters, she's going to have to put in some serious study time.

0

I completely agree. Haha I feel like I'm just replying negative stuff about Jessi here when I did find her very entertaining, but I was pretty put off by that because she definitely acted like she just moved to Korea when she's been there for a very long time. Obviously she's not that interested in integrating into the Korean culture, so it seems to me like she just thinks it's likelier she'd make it in Korea rather than the U.S. so she's just dealing with it. She's just very different, so it's like... if you're going for practicality by promoting in Korea, continue with the practicality and learn more Korean and about the culture. Like her Korean is pretty bad for someone who's been living there for years, just pronunciation and basic words. I think it's just her stubbornness and disdain for Korea, which you can't have if you're gonna work there... just sayin' -- but again, I did find her funny and liked the episode a lot

i don't think the other members could translate what's going on in English for Jessi. Generally, the members' English are quite poor. Jong-kook is an exception. His english pronunciation and understanding is really quite good. I was in his fan meeting and he was able to understand questions even before his translator could translate for him. He only use the translator for when he has to say something really long in English.

I can totally understand what some people are saying about Jessi. She seems really "off-putting" here. I do think a large part of that is because she doesn't quite understand a lot of what's going on. She does seem very uncomfortable when the comedian girl was doing an impersonation of Jessi. She should have reacted better, but maybe she was just feeling very insecure. It would have been better if she asked for a translator. I have seen her in Happy together and she was somewhat ok there. She does have that "crude" vibe going for her.

The critiquing of the eye surgery originate from Happy Together. She must have filmed RM right after. They were talking about it very openly so there is no problem. There is even a good before and after comparison.

Yes looking at her language handicap she doesn't seem like a person who has lived in the country for a decade. It looks like her time spent has been exaggerated greatly or she must have flown back to usa often and spending just a bit of time in korea.

I don't know Happy Together, but sometimes you roll with a comment in one group and then get freaked out by it elsewhere. And YJS was saying she was prettier before her surgery, which... thanks?

And I think the language handicap would apply to the mimicry - imitations like that are based off of exaggerating and mocking someone, and Jessi may not have been clear on what elements of her behavior were being mocked. From what I saw it was a gentle imitation, but mimicry is subtle and while I understood it's showcasing the comedienne's talent, having her mimic Jessi twice was a bit much.

Not everyone is good with language and it's tough learning the intricacies of Korean beyond basic conversational Korean and Jessi probably splits time btwn Korea and the US.

Think by now, Jessi has gotten the cultural differences down (or should), such as Korean society being a lot more forward/upfront about things like physical appearance, weight, age, etc.

YJS is right - Jessi does look better before she got her eyelids done (which look fake as is usually the case).

Mimicry and character impersonation is a very traditional and accepted form of entertainment in the korean entertainment scene. If you've all watched different variety shows, they all do it in various ways and doing it for different personalities. For example, just last week the guest Kang Kyun-sung did all sorts of voice impersonations, which he got roundly scolded for (haha!), and in different programmes too. He basically do the same thing for every programme he appears in.

There's also a comedian who keeps impersonating the shiny faced actress. They even met face to face in Infinity Challenge. She was a bit uncomfortable but she reacted very graciously. Which brought about a Gag-concert skit that ran for months with the comedian Kim Ji Min.

Obviously all these mimicry are not meant to mock the subject, it's for entertainment. At the end of the day these comedians just want to display a "talent" (or lack of!) and get some airtime for themselves so that they will keep getting invited to guest on different variety programmes.

I watched variety show and liked it when idols make CEO impressions, perhaps because they make fun of the people absent in good nature. Even Kang Kyunsung was funny.

A joke should be enjoyed by both sides, but Jessi was clearly offended. Doyeon immitated Jessi when she was least charming and that wasn't funny. Both women weren't their best on RM, but that's mocking and that's stupidly offensive.

0

How do you know Jessi had a "bad attitude" throughout the RM ep?

Seemed like she was having fun and her being miffed at the Do-yeon's impression might have been her playing up being miffed, just like Gary and KJK played up being miffed when on the prior week's ep., a guest mimicked their singing (but in a real bad way).

And I don't think she was taking things too far.

Aside from the ewww factor of sticking her finger in someone's mout (what was more ewww was Suk-jin actually sticking the egg in his mouth the first place as the outside of the egg isn't the most hygienic even presuming the egg distributor/packager washed the egg before packaging), she wasn't as aggressive as "bad" Ji-hyo or some of the other female guests.

Ji-hyo has pulled hair, bitten others, kicked, dug her fingernails into the skin, and even used an arm bar (on Kwang-soo) - but she gets a pass b/c she's Ms. Mong and she's cute while doing it.

Other female guests have pulled hair or even bitten (including Ji-hyo's buddy, Han Ji-min, who also gets a pass b/c she's petite and cute).

Hyori, is the Queen of playing dirty (pulling hair, etc.) and she gets a pass b/c she's. well, Queen Hyori.

Jessi didn't play nearly as dirty or aggressive, but is getting a lot of criticism - probably due to the fact that she isn't petite and cute like the females who have played aggressive/dirty.

Shows that being petite/pretty/cute (not to mention a more feminine voice) has an impact on how people see others.

Why are you bringing Jessi's look into this? I said nothing about her appearance. I am in no way judging her based on her looks. I also was including her visits on other shows into my comment not just solely based on RM. Maybe you shouldn't focus so much on people looks. I didn't like when Hyori was pulling peoples hair or biting, but since she wasn't on this ep, Why would I bring her up? I think its unnecessary when playing a harmless game. If you have seen her on other shows ( including RM ) she is always trying to portray a tough bad girl image which is fine if done in the right way. I was merely saying I didn't think her way of doing it was the right way. She does have a way of rubbing people in the wrong way. And NO I don't think it has anything to do with her looks. Have you seen her body? It's awesome. She is not bad looking at all.

Well, did you make the same complaints about Hyori then?

Or how about Han Ji-min or Ji-hyo who has a long history of being a lot more physically aggressive, much less using foul play.

If not - then there is a reason for it and probably has to do w/ Jessi's persona (including physical appearance, mannerisms and voice).

Yes I have made comments before about my dislike for the aggressive behavior of some of the female guest. I personally would never go on RM ( if in an alternate universe I was invited haha ) since to me it's a game and I don't think its fun to be physically assaulted while playing.

And no my lacking of commenting has never had anything to do with someones physical appearance. Jessi's looks never even crossed my mind when I wrote my comment. Like I said you seem to be the only one wrapped up in physical appearance yet you cast your prejudice on everyone else.

0

Well, good for you and I hope you made numerous comments criticizing Ji-hyo for her numerous aggressive attacks on her RM comrades.

And you think being "physically assaulted" (Jessi has hardly been the worst) is an issue, than RM should just close its doors b/c the gang has been repeatedly done that to each other.

0

It's not really fair to put them in the same category though, since Ji-hyo has a history with these guys, and it took a lot of time for her to create her "delinquent" persona on the show. When she first started, she wasn't violent or needlessly aggressive at all - she wanted to win, sure, but she wasn't shoving, hitting, or acting nearly as off-putting as Jessi was. She was respectful of boundaries, and seemed to understand what was and wasn't acceptable.

Now that she's established herself though, and is a regular member of the team, when she bites them, pulls their hair, or kicks them, it's usually part of her "bad behavior" character, and is more for entertainment value than an actual crazy desire to win. Hyori, likewise, has a history with the Running Man crew (from her time on Family Outing) which is why her violent behavior wasn't surprising - it's part of her variety show role, and is what's expected of her when she guest-stars. Yet even these behaviors were built and cultivated over time; they never would've acted that way upon their first meeting/outing on the show if they were unfamiliar with the cast.

I think that's personally why I had trouble with Jessi's behavior. She didn't have that connection to the crew (she couldn't even remember Jae-suk's name) and didn't seem to understand the show, its games, or what's expected of her. She took winning too seriously, and it felt like even the cast were a little put-off by her extreme behavior at times, which made me uncomfortable. Plus, I didn't like how whiny she was when she didn't understand the language-game (if she was going on the show, she should've done her research and watched an episode or two). I was not a fan of her attitude, which has absolutely nothing to do with the way she looks. But that's just me. I'm not forcing you to agree; if you liked her, great. But your opinion isn't going to change my own.

I understand why some people might have an issue with Jessi, but I thought she was entertaining in a mostly harmless way and did alright in variety despite still being predominantly comfortable with English rather than Korean (it was pretty cool seeing Jong-kook translating for her on the sidelines, actually).

While overall, this episode wasn't *that* funny for me, I have to say I was totally rooting for the Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo couple from beginning to end! (I love them SO HARD as a platonic noona-dongsaeng ship!!) Seriously, I don't think the final match-up would've been anywhere near as tense as they managed to make it if it weren't for the Goddess of Luck SJH being pitted against Smartypants KJK for the final strategic gamble.

Also I love that Running Man, after so long, is finally starting to experiment with new character pairings and new game formats. Even though these experiments might not always work, I think the show will definitely become more exciting for their efforts.

Very unsatisfied with some of the guests. Please save me from silly guests who only know how to giggle like an idiot or stand blankly without talking or the typical idol guest who can't entertain.

The editing really makes the orange girl look like an idiot. When you keep showing someone giggling and grinning with a close up without saying anything for so many times, what am I supposed to gather from it? It's like seeing Kim Jong Min the happy idiot!

Jessi does come across as too abrasive. The comedian a little too loud but that's expected of a comedian so it's ok. She appeared in Infinity Challenge recently. But at least these 2 are entertaining to watch and it's up to the PD to tone it up or down in the editing. Perhaps because there is really nothing to show from the other 3 guests. Only 2 out of 5 guests were carrying the show. Disappointing performance. Please stop getting people with no personalities to be on the show.

And I don't know why all of them weren't actively sabotaging the red team in the games. Don't they get the concept or the rules today? Don't let the red team get in the top 2. What are they all doing? At least Jessi did do something about it even thou it was ineffective but it was in the right direction. The yellow girl went and interfered with another team instead when she had no chance of winning.

I don't like that Jessi stuck her finger into JSJ's mouth to pop the egg. She could have accidentally choked him. Besides, it is fu*king disgusting. It's more disgusting than anything Kwangsoo has ever done. Since she's american how can she pop a raw egg in someone's mouth? Aren't y'all warned of raw chicken and raw eggs and samonella?

Good part is they finally paired SJY with Giraffe again after more than a year. But they should have shown more of their interactions. The last part, she clearly changed the Hall, why would the editing try to make it a mystery again a mere few minutes later? That's so weird. Is there a commercial break in the broadcast?

The egg thing... Look, I'm a little more inclined to put responsibility for that on JSJ. I don't know if the Korean age/status hierarchy thing comes into play here, like he thought it would be a funny thing to do (true!) and also totally safe because no one would dare stick their fingers in a senior's mouth (...untrue). The egg wouldn't have been in his mouth if he hadn't put it in there, and Jessi was focused on winning the game, and he's the regular cast member so it's sort of his role to not set up a situation where the guest can get in trouble for following through.

Again, I suspect there's culture clash here. The women who guest on Running Man are generally not the type who will truly pull out all the stops to win - for that matter, neither are the men. It's one of the reasons I don't think RM would ever work in the US: competitors would view each others as complete equals and battle on a purely physical basis, stopping just shy of actual injury - not risk of injury, ACTUAL injury. Based on this show, Jessi's approach was more American in that she based her behavior on how the rules were set up and how the regulars behaved, without thinking about how the wider Korean public would view her actions.

I think your average Korean celebrity is much more aware of how her image is being viewed, and will readily lose a game to preserve her image, and that precaution is appreciated by viewers. In contrast, an American celebrity will be viewed negatively by a US audience for slacking off during a competition for self-serving reasons.

What did Kwang soo actually said when Ji-Hyo was trying to get him to say "you're like an angel"?
In the subbed episode that I saw, it was translated as "you're a bit annoying". Someone here commented that he was saying Ji-Hyo was a bit of a jerk. Which is correct?

It's tricky because literally, it means "you're a bit unlucky" but koreans tend to use that to describe people as like.. "you kind of tick me off" or "you're kind of a good-for-nothing." It's a veryyyyy hard translation, but "you're a bit annoying" is probably closer than "you're a bit of a jerk."

I watch Running Man pretty regularly and I don't have an issue with competitive guests but I agree with the commentators above that it was a bit uncomfortable watching Jessi on the show. It might be the culture thing or whatever but I think in those cases, you should err on the side of safety. I was also really worried about her cracking the egg in JSJ's mouth - the egg shells could have caught in his throat and raw egg is not safe. I actually think at that point the PDs should have paused the game and told him it's against the rules so I think they were being a irresponsible too.

I also didn't like that they were making so much fun of Jessi. Making fun has limits and the other person needs to be comfortable. Jessi did not seem to be comfortable. I was fine with the comedian person (I know the other cast members told her to do it) but I wish everybody (including her) had toned it down a bit.

Also were people just really stupid??? Why did Jessi and Choa (in the first and second game respectively) attack non-red teams? Especially Choa when she attacked Kwangsoo... did she not get the game at all?? Even Haha was just like wtf... I like smart guests so that kinda pissed me off. JH kept saying in the first game that we should team together to beat KJK but nobody listened mainly because Jessi kept attacking.

Overall I didn't like this episode as much as I would have wanted to. BUT YAY to JH and LKS winning :D I really liked their pairing too (though I wish they showed us more of the interaction). And I really liked Yoo-ri.

I completely agree with you about everyone attacking the non-red team. I was soooo confused when Choa attacked Kwang Soo during the slip & slide pull. All I could think is, "what's wrong with you???? You're helping the wrong team win!"

Also during the egg cracking game, the comedian really bothered me. She kept attacking people really viciously like when she hit Kwang Soo in a private area and flung him too the ground. Then she would say, "oh, I'm so sorry" before going after someone else. If you were really sorry, then you wouldn't continue with that kind of behavior.

Lastly, it was pretty disgusting for Jessi to put her fingers in Suk Jin's mouth, but he totally should not have broken the rules and put it in there in the first place.

Okay, end rant.

now about the egg thing, jsj put it in his mouth and you could see other females beside jessi try to crack it without sticking their fingers in. i think ji hyo was jabbing his cheek or something etc. so either way it would of been cracked with the egg inside his mouth. so idk what's the problem ...

There were really funny moments like the soap race when Jessi accidentally kicked Jaesuk, or the reactions when the brides came to meet the RM men in the intro....but I don't think that the editing helped Jessi much at all. I was actually kind of uncomfortable at Jaesuk's frustration with her during the phrase game - both in the first try when she kept stalling and the second when he was going crazy....

It wasn't humorous, and it left a kind of sour mood on the game - where Jessi was out of her element (due to language?) and Jaesuk was frustrated - really - rather than just playing with a guest, joking around with a pretty girl (like he would have just laughed with a prettier, more conventionally mannered girl?)

But I was happy that Jongkook got to be the adversary - because he is so strong and smart in all the games, and love it even more that Kwangsoo won! with help from Lady Luck, of course.

I got that impression from YJS as well - that he was genuinely frustrated at Jessi and not giving her the same consideration he has other female guests in the past. He may not have realized that she genuinely didn't understand the rules - he might have thought she was just stalling because she wanted to suss out how to win the game quickly (not funny, bad for variety) rather than she honestly had no idea what was expected of her.

And yeah, it could have been amusing to see her go with the flow and just yell out anything, but she didn't have the confidence to do that and I don't think he handled the situation as well as he could have. KJK was more perceptive.

I agree. He seemed genuinely peeved, I think because she was frustrating. It was dab dab hae. Like, just go with it or not. I can sympathize with her because if you don't understand the language well or something like that, you could easily freak out, but even after watching examples, she was clueless and didn't handle it very well. She kept freaking out, so it was frustrating for him. Ji Suk Jin also got fed up with her during that game, I noticed. I think some of the others, like Gary and HaHa, were, too, but just not saying anything.

No, Jessi said there's nothing there to hit, so she was dissing the comedian (it was pretty clear, because she'd normally then say 'I didn't hit anything,' not 'there's nothing to hit'), probably caught up in the moment and honestly a bit offended by the drunk comment, which COULD be low-key dissing, but I feel like it's common for people to joke, "Are you drunk?" when the person is being a bit weird. I think Jessi's comment was much more catty, to be honest, but it did still make for some laughs, so I don't mind too much. The comedian played it off well, but it was pretty awkward throughout the episode, like the two were just awkward together haha.
Also, honestly, it's ironic Jessi would say that because she's revealed she's gotten a boob job done, so it's like... I mean...

not a well thought out premise - as long as Jong Kook & Do Yeon won the last game - which would have happened if it wasn't for Jessi - the ending would have been settled - there was no reward for winning the earlier games

i'm not familiar with Jessi - but i'm familiar with her type - it's loud and brash and overbearing - but by being herself - she stole the limelight away from Do Yeon who has to act weird to do that

fortunately YeJi ignored the competition - and just acted her sweet self - she was absolutely charming in the guessing game - Choa didn't seem concerned about Jessi's personality either - and did well enuf in her few scenes - loved her awkward kicks during the egg breaking game - and wow! is she flexible

Jessi was behind the funniest scenes -
* breaking Suk Jin's egg which he placed in his mouth himself - (and no Gummimochi - it's not dangerous)
* telling Jong Kook and Kwang Soo to hit Gary before learning he had given the correct answer
* telling Jae Suk to speak in Korean during their contentious guessing game
* and being behind the story where Jae Suk was scolded for "allowing" Jessi to post pictures

it was also funny to watch the korean guests - such as YuRi - stare in shock at her manner - Jessi'd be a force on american tv - she must be positively overwhelming for koreans

So she is too competitive, too loud and shouldn't have crushed JSJ's egg in his mouth?
Why didnt you guys bitch about JiHyo constantly cheating or being really competitive in physical games towards the other members? Why didnt you complain when male guests were very loud and competitive?

Hypicritical behavior really. Your dislike of Jessi is absolutely ok. You can't be liked by everyone. But dont make up silly, hypocritical arguments for why she did bad in the episode just because you dislike her personality or her.

This episode was hilarious! I felt a bit bad for the actress guests because they were a bit awkward here, especially because the other guests were more aggressive and funny. I do think Jessi was a bit annoying at times because she was too aggressive, but I also think the cultural differences are a bit hard to overcome and she isn't someone who can fake anything, which is not a bad trait. She could've been a bit nicer, though. She clashed unreasonably with the comedian at times, so she's not really a good sport about things. I do think almost everyone eventually got pretty fed up with Jessi haha.
I wanted Kim Jong Kook and the hilarious comedian to win. I think I would've minded less if it were another couple that won, but I honestly see lots of episodes where Song Ji Hyo's luck more than anything lets her win at the very end, and that gets a bit tiring. I love her and Lee Kwang Soo, but it just felt a bit frustrating because it's like.. luck trumps hard work, you know? And I don't really find that fair. I know people say luck is a good trait to have in life, too, but I think I might just be bitter because not everyone is really graced with luck. How do you even control that?
And also, Kim Jong Kook and Do Yeon were leading by quite a lot in that last race, and ChoA randomly attacked Song Ji Hyo, making them lag a lot, yet they suddenly caught up in the end and won, which made suspect there was some tweaking here and there. Not too surprising because if the power couple wins every single game, there's really no point. Especially if they won the last game, it'd be done right then and there, so I do suspect the production crew tweaked it just a bit so that there was more drama and a chance another couple might win.
I suspected a bit of that in the 2nd game, too, because KJK-DY had an easy phrase and she should've gotten it sooner but there was a huge time lapse all of a sudden. Like the comedian got it right the first time, she was just missing ONE word, and Kim Jong Kook is definitely more than smart enough to hint at the missing word in a subtle way, but it took them TWO more minutes to just add one word? So I definitely suspect some scripting and tweaking (of course, all variety shows do), but in the end, I actually just really enjoyed the episode. Haha, it sounds like I'm being super analytical but I just want to say my observations.
Anyway, it really was a very enjoyable episode haha! Loved it!
