Oh My Ghostess casts Kwak Shi-yang as pretty-boy chef
by javabeans
I always like seeing talented newcomers getting more work, so it’s good to hear that Kwak Shi-yang, who came on the scene out of nowhere to take a lead in Mnet’s Persevere, Gu Hae-ra, is joining Oh My Ghostess on tvN, which is the new series from the High School King of Savvy producers.
Kwak Shi-yang will play one of the cooks at the restaurant run by the conceited chef-owner, Jo Jung-seok. Also working there is the exceedingly timid Park Bo-young, who is so shy she has no friends and no confidence — until she’s possessed by the spirit of a lusty virgin ghost (Kim Seul-gi) and undergoes a sudden transformation. Oh, the hijinks that will ensue…
Like Savvy, it sounds as though Ghostess will be largely workplace-centered, since that’s where all our main players work. Having studied at the Cordon Bleu, Kwak’s character’s relative lack of kitchen experience is made up for by his impressive specs, and he’s described as being a straight shooter. Being startlingly blunt (to everyone except the heroine) was exactly his M.O. in Gu Hae-ra, so I can see him fitting right into that description.
Kwak Shi-yang debuted with the 2014 film Night Flight (a movie about high school, broken friendships, and bullying), then had a role in weekend drama Feel-Good Day, after which he scored the lead in Persevere, Gu Hae-ra. That drama was one of those shows where the characters were endearing despite being acted by rookies who were mostly still green, but Kwak Shi-yang was a surprise breakout as the taciturn, principled Se-jong. His character was often frustrating with his silent suffering and excessive sense of responsibility, but he was one of the main highlights of the show for me, and I thought him both adorable and charismatic. (Reluctant drunk bromance! So cute!)
This role doesn’t sound like it’ll be huge, but it’s a step in the right direction; I remember looking him up right away when Gu Hae-ra began and feeling disappointed that there was little in his filmography to watch, so I’m glad to see him getting more work, since he’s certainly got the potential.
Oh My Ghostess will follow Ex-Girlfriend Club in July.

Nice score, but the news im waiting for post-Kim-Seulgi-casting is whether or not the drama will cast another male ghost opposite KSG. You cannot cast KSG and not give her a shippable loveline, Show, do ya hear me? Give us a ghost OTP please!

Haha Ikr! I think they will surely give her a love line. She fits like a glove with any co-star. My favourite ship is still her and BIG from Surplus Princess.

He may not be as handsome as Ji Chang Wook but Kwak Siyang is super pleasant and easy on the eye. Hope he is able to build up his filmography.
He seems to do angsty characters well. Was impressed by him in Night Flight. He totally rocked the gay dude well.

Exactly. He didn't come out of nowhere! He was cast as one of the two leads in Night Flight which premiered at the Berlinale in 2014. Leesong Hee-Il's movies are often a starting point for strong careers later. Think Kim Nam Gil and Lee Yi Kyung.
In an interview Leesong Hee-Il said, that Kwak Shi-Yang had no acting experience before his movie. He had just left the army and shooting was difficult, as he learnt in front of the camera. Night Flight is a great movie well worth the watch, he did a fine job there.

The director of "No Regret", really? My love for this film and these two actors knows no bounds. Especially for LYK who practically never works in dramas. If it's anything close to the director's previous work I will be so thrilled. Your comment just made my day!

It was my favourite movie out of nine I watched during the Berlinale of 2014. And it got some pretty strong competition like 'Highway' by Imtiaz Ali.
I bought the DVD and recently re-watched it. Still loved it. Leesong's movies are always among my favourite from Korea. He didn't disappoint me yet.
Enjoy!

Haven't yet watched beyond episode 1 of "Persevere" but that shower scene with the bug was a ROFL moment for me.

I liked him in Persevere, and I'm impatiently waiting to see him in Night Flight (if only I could find some subs). Hope his role is interesting in this.

He was awesome as the hidden brother in FGD. I cried my eyes out when he revealed himself and was so apologetic to his sisters for his father's actions. Such a sweet character and he played him well.

This is so weird. I really do hope the best for all new young actors. But either I didn't like this character on GHR or I didn't like how the role was played. At all.
His character was so thoroughly dull, mopey. and flat. It reminded me of the portrayals common to American soap operas. I would have pegged it as probably the least inspired performance on GHR.

I almost did not recognize him in the featured photo, as I've been used to his look in Persevere!
Happy for this casting news. I look forward to seeing him in Oh My Ghostess.
