Joo-won, Kim Tae-hee offered leads in SBS’s Yong-pal

Innnteresting, suddenly I’m a lot more interested in the upcoming SBS drama Yong-pal — although with the God’s Gift–14 Days director and Reset writer onboard, my interest was already piqued. But then you throw Joo-won (Cantabile Tomorrow, Good Doctor) into the mix, and well, I’m listening.

Yong-pal is about a doctor who falls into a huge amount of debt after putting his younger sister through kidney dialysis treatments. Desperate for money and using the alias “Yong-pal,” he begins making house calls to the wealthy, where he witnesses all manner of craziness (and, it’s implied, shadiness). Joo-won has confirmed receiving the offer to play the lead, while Kim Tae-hee (Jang Ok-jung, Live For Love) is up to play his co-star. (No word on her character just yet.)

With these producers onboard, I’m expecting an intense, darkly dramatic story, which is how I like Joo-won best (Gaksitaaaaaal); he’s totally fine in lighter projects and is all-around talented, but man does he turn up the intensity when the story calls for it. And while Kim Tae-hee has been hit or miss through her career, I’ve been warming to her more in recent years; for her, choosing the right character is really key. She doesn’t possess that special talent of turning a blank character into something great, but give her something to work with and she’s much more winning (My Princess).

I almost forgot that Joo-won and Kim Tae-hee were almost paired before in the unsuccessful action rom-com Level 7 Civil Servant, which is a shame. I mean, it’s not a shame that she averted disaster, but had she taken the role, at least the romance might have been cute and fizzy, which would’ve been an improvement. But let’s not cry over spilt milk.

In any case, I’ll certainly be keeping my eyes open for more news about Yong-pal, which will be getting the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot following Mask. That slot had previously been up for grabs, with both Will You Have Dinner With Me and Signal angling for the spot, but Yong-pal won out and will air in August.

Hmm sounds intriguing. So SMA's drama will air in October now? We'll see who'll win between SMA and SHK. My bet is on SHK because of the budget and the simple plot of SMA's drama, but you never know.

aren't SBS airing Six Flying Dragons on Wednesday-Tuesday in October to compete with DotS? So, they will probably move WYHDWM to another time slot.

From what I read in koala's blog, high society will be followed by Kim hee ae's comeback drama Mrs.Cop in Mon-Tues time slot. Six flying dragons will be moved to the Wed-Thurs slot and premiere in October to compete against KBS Descendants of the Sun and MBC rumored drama with Lee seung gi and Yoo seung ho.

I wonder when Shin mina's drama will premiere. I hope they don't delay it any further. I have been waiting for her comeback ever since Arang.

yeah if only Shin Min Ah and Song Hye Gyo against each others. but if Lee Kyung Hee casted Moon Chae Won as the lead for her upcoming drama..then their drama will be favourite imo..

The plot sounds interesting. It will be melo and intense drama. I'm okay with Joo Won playing in melodrama but Kim Tae Hee, her actings is fit in rom-com. I prefer Han Hyo Joo.

What happen to k-drama these years? They always give noona-romance. I'm not complaining but I prefer the similar age romance.

And I don't think Kim Tae Hee will take this offer. The girl seems really consider about the level of his co-stars.

no..kim tae hee never consider her costar status or level like moon geun young. kim tae hee already works with yooh ah in which same level with joo won

I prefer HHJ too, I miss her. If HHJ with JW, I'll be dying.
But, I don't think KTH consider her co-star level, because she recently worked with YAI.

I think KTH will decline this drama, it's true that her acting is more fit in rom-com. And I never liked her acting.
HHJ or MCW will be better choice than KTH.

There is no word yet for the role of the female lead maybe that's why this was offered to Kim Tae Hee because she fits the role but I really like the idea of seeing Joo Won and Moon Chae Won again especially if there is more romance unlike Good Doctor where their relationship was more like brother and sister and in the future i'm sure he will be pair up with Han Hyo Joo but at this point in time i don't think Han Hyo Joo will be back on dramaland yet.

While KTH is more suited to romcoms (she really has good comedic timing), she hit the emotional scenes in "My Princess" out of the ballpark. so it's not like she can't do melo (as long as the writing is decent).

So, they put Joo Won to play a young doctor who did illegal practice to compete with MBC's Scholar who walks the night and KBS's National Assembly? Wew, it seems would be a heavy competition.

Well, I think Joo Won in darker and meatier role is unrivalled (Gaksitaaaaal!). If Joo Won say yes, it's gonna be totally awesome.

Yeah, the competition will be crazy in this time slot. But I miss Joo Won in dramas very much so I’m very excited to see him coming back. The story looks interesting, hope the script is good.

for kim ta hee role i hope it suit her, she's not really good actress but as long the role suit her it will be good

I really think Joo Won should stick with these kind of roles. His comedies have been oh-so-terrible and roles that require intensity is more up his alley.

The pairing sounds interesting. It's yet another noona romance but I can see it working out well as long as the writing-PD combo holds up. If this is the final cast, count me intrigued.

i love his comedic acting, as actor he shouldn't stick on only the kind of role n i like how he take many different role when his rom com doesn't success it's not only about his acting every good who keep acting in many years actor always has fail or unsuccessfull project

Agreed. I think his acting was good in Tomorrow Cantabile (especially his epic smirk in episode 2, :D ). I cannot imagine any other actors playing Chiaki as great as Joo Won did.

I liked him since Bridal Mask, but I loved him more after Cantabile. This guy is oozing with talent. He's just really a risk taker.

Your point about doing a variety of roles is very true. But I just never felt Joo Won was up to the mark in any of his comedies. You could attribute that to my absolute dislike for both Level 7 and Nodame but he just can't make me laugh the way he makes me cry. Of course, one good project can easily change that but for now, I'm glad he's sticking to what he's best at.

he's brilliant in that movie! :D

While I agree that he is best in intense/dramatic roles, I think he has quite good comedic timing. It's his romance acting that was somtimes not very convincing for me (except in Ojakkyo Brothers)...

It's a weekend family drama (>50episodes) but I like it (one of my favorite JW dramas with Gaksital and Good Doctor), joo won had good chemistry with uee ! Girlfriday wrote a long and interesting review about this drama which can give you an overview of the show :)

Regarding romance acting, I think Ji Chang wook is really excellent in this because my heart flutters every time he looks at ha ji won in empress ki or at park min young in healer :p

0

Oh thanks! I just watched episode 1, and it's cute.

50 eps? This gonna on my holiday watch list :D

I haven't watched Empress Ki and didn't finish Healer ( I gave up in eps 15) ... But I agreed that Ji Chang Wook is really excellent in romance acting. Already missed him in dramaland.

0

@Saiia13 it's a heart-warming drama, hope you enjoy it :)
Not only JooWon/Uee story is interesting but also those of the brothers ! Did you watch his movie "Catch me" with Kim Ah Joong ? not really a very good movie but the scene of him singing for her is quite beautiful.

I would also recommend Empress Ki if you like JCW, his acting really shines in this drama, even more than in Healer, by changing from a innocent cute prince, bratty jealous young man to a crazy in love emperror! You can feel his love, his pain and his craziness ! The story is quite makjang at the end but addictive...

0

so in the end it's about the script n audience preference, i love his romance story in baker king it touch my heart in ojakgyo brother it's cute romance is fun but doesn't touch my heart so much, joo won act just like written in the script, most of this drama doesn't focus on romance n i like that kind of story, cheesy romance is boring

it is okay. nobody it perfect. joo won got many flaws in his comedic role and romance but at least he is very good in more intense or dramatic role. at least he tries taking it. i like actor like kim soo hyun and joo won which always want to diverse their acting range without afraid being less popular.. but somehow hope this last drama of joo won can hit daebak so he can serve in military in high note...

KTH is as her best when she stars with actors who have similar level of skill like her, ie: Song Seung Hun ( they were great in MP)

However, when she acts with better actors like YAI or LBH, the disparity of their acting show. It makes her weakness more visible.

Not exactly fair since MP had some widely recognized actors in its cast and KTH's acting w/ them was just as good.

KTH shone in MP b/c she was given good writing/dialogue to work with and her emotional scenes were often w/o SSH.

SSH had it relatively easy in MP - he just had to be light and charming; KTH had to carry the load w/ the emotional scenes.

I love Joo Won.. He is so talented and versatile, but I certainly also prefer him in melo. I never thought of Kim Tae-Hee as a good actress, but she is beautiful and at least she does not over-act. And she does have a following. I would not watch a drama just for her, but she will not keep me from watching a drama I am interested in. She is easy on the eyes and pleasant.

I must be among the minority as I liked his comedy. While I agree that the intensity of the more dramatic roles was great, I liked his dry humor. And my only criticism of Level 7 was his leading lady. I found it difficult to see her continuing to play the ingenue role and even the "young" hair styling did not help.
