Baek Jin-hee, Jung Yumi in the mix to join Six Flying Dragons
by javabeans
After having filled its main lineup with a few big names—namely, Kim Myung-min and Yoo Ah-in—SBS’s sageuk drama Six Flying Dragons is looking to cast its leading ladies. Up for two main roles are Baek Jin-hee (Pride and Prejudice) and Jung Yumi (Maids), to play romantic partners to our leading men.
The central character is technically Yoo Ah-in’s Yi Bang-won, the future King Taejong, but I’d consider Six Flying Dragons a two-top project (nobody puts Kim Myung-min in a corner), or even an ensemble piece. It’s an epic sageuk about the founding of a five-century dynasty, after all, with a lot of characters, politics, and shifting alliances to cover over the span of fifty episodes. Yoo Ah-in’s King Taejong clashes ideologically and politically with Jung Do-jeon (Kim Myung-min), the man instrumental in helping his father establish the Joseon nation, and the drama follows the conflict as they attempt to consolidate their power and the state of the fledgling nation.
Baek Jin-hee has been offered the role of Yoo Ah-in’s love interest, a kind-hearted woman who can’t stand to see injustice, whose greatest strength is her strong spirit that doesn’t sink in the face of despair. Since she’s pretty much made a career out of playing those kinds of roles, I’d say she’s an obvious fit.
Interestingly, a number of articles describe Jung Yumi’s potential role as exactly the same as Baek Jin-hee’s, but I have seen other mentions that Jung would be paired with Kim Myung-min. On one hand I find that kind of an odd pairing (though I think all of Kim Myung-min’s leading-lady pairings are odd—he has fantastic chemistry with co-stars when they’re non-romantic, but I have a sneaking suspicion he’s terrible at the romantic kind), but on the other hand, that description does make more sense because it would be bad form to release simultaneous announcements that two actresses were competing for the same role. But the news admittedly sounds a little confused to me. Only time (and more skilled press release writers) will tell.
Six Flying Dragons is being prepped for a September premiere.

Yet I am worried. Yoo Ah-in’s Yi Bang-won could beat An jae-Mo's YBW? and it won't be an easy job to do better Jo Jae-Hyun's Jung Do-jeon In 'Jung Do-jeon'. Fighting Aja Aja!

"nobody puts Kim Myung-min in a corner"
True that! I believe his role and screen time will be as big as Lady Mishil in QSD.
I like the Baek Jin-hee and Yoo Ah-in pairing. Hope she accept.
Maybe both ladies are going to be the king's women. I'm guessing one will be the queen and the other will be the concubine or something like that. Hope I'm wrong because we've seen that in almoat every sageuk.

Actually, I thought Kim Myung-min was adorable with Nam Sang-mi in Bad Family! They're still one of my favorite old-school drama couples. And one of my favorite romantic scenes of all time is when he hugs her in the aquarium, so funny and adorable. Though maybe that couple worked for me because they were supposed to be kind of awkward lol? But then, he also had pretty fantastic romantic chemistry in More Beautiful than a Flower years ago.
But yeah, I guess other than that his pairings have been a bit odd. Still, I think, if paired right, he has the potential to have really good romantic chemistry. Though this potential pairing...I like them both individually, but definitely find it to be an off-pairing.
Like the sound of the other two together though!

I agree with you. KMM isn't bad at romance so much as it is hard to imagine him being lovey-dovey and going on sappy dates and doing all kinds of clichés we've been so accustomed to in most dramas. He can totally have romantic chemistry with his lady without it necessarily being flashy and all over the place. He does this kind of romance the best imo, a bit subdued but more realistic

I watch Kim Myung Min in movie "Closer to Heaven" with Ha Ji Won and "King of Dramas" with Jung Ryeo Won.
I think he did just fine at romance and can generate chemistry with everyone.

KMM is a good chemistry generator, in my opinion. He worked chemistry best with Lee Jina in Beethoven Virus and Jung Ryeo-won in King of Dramas. Even without any romantic scene, my heart FLUTTERS to the moon and back. The most romantic there was A HUG scene, and IT MEANT THE WORLD to me. My heart keeps disturbing my peace. KMM and LJA occupy my mind.
KMM introduced me to this word called "chemistry" and "butterflies" hehehe (well it first occurred to me with Jang Dong-gun in 'All About Eve' way back 2000). I thought that was ENOUGH, BUT HE became a ROMANTIC Anthony Kim in Episode 15 of King of Dramas! Ohhhh, be still, my heart!
He should look GREAT in a romance-themed scene or drama as a whole. (That's why, amidst all the opposition, it has been MY PERSONAL DREAM to see him in a romcom, BEFORE I die or before his ahjusshi prime ends, it should happen! This is MY dream kkkk.)

This did not apply to BJH in Empress Ki. That was a character you cheered for every time she got slapped. She played the hell out of her evil role!

This is the reason I wasn't sure what to feel about her casting...On one hand this is a high profile project with a star-studded cast so she will surely gain more recognition off of it...yet I know she is capable of more than the bland heroine roles as seen in her performance as Tanashiri. Here's hoping that this is not a cookie cutter character but one which has more depth!

@Chaerim, believe me, I do love Empress Ki. I watched it during its airing for 6 months and still re-watch it on regular basis. But the story, for me after ep 35 onwards are on downward spiral. It's still good, but not as amazing as the first few episodes.

Baek jin Hee is nothing special. She's NOT a good actress - such a mediocre one. Never been impressed by her acting no matter how hard she tries. She's annoying to watch onscreen too.

Too bad. I don't like either of them as an actress. One cannot really show her emotions, the other over-acts her emotions.

Oh, come on people. TWDR had shin se kyung in it. I'm more excited about the writer than disappointed over the female leads (to be quite honest, I don't think the roles of the female characters are that big in this storyline).

I had no complains about Shin Se-Kyung in sageuks. I thought she was decent enough for a teen role in QSD and lead role in TWDR (both written by Kim Young-Hyun). Both shows had major talents like Go Hyun-jung, Han Suk-Kyu, Song Joong-Ki, Jang Hyuk and a boat load of veteran supporting actors to carry the show.
I believe you are right, the female characters is not going to be that important in this part of history. The major players are Yoo Ah-in and Kim Myung-min. Baek Jin-hee and Jung Yumi are going to be more than fine imo.

I totally agree with what you said about shin se kyung in sageuks/twdr. my pointment exactly! Considering who's doing the writing, i'm not really worried about the [secondary] female leads, who aren't even bad actors. I'm equally excited for who kim young hyun will cast for the child/teen actors. I love how meaty the childhood/younger roles are sometimes in her dramas.(nam ji hyun and song jong gi in qsd, twdr come to mind)

Shin se kyung has a history of BAD acting. She got so much criticism for fashion king, when a man loves, deep rooted tree....after all these years she finally showed improved acting in her new drama.

No one here was complaining about her acting in TWDR. We followed the show while it was airing and HeadsNo2 was recapping it. Not sure if you even watch it or just reading other people's criticism.
I didn't watch her modern dramas cause I didn't care for the writers. Sounds like no amount of good acting would save a bad written show. I never thought she was a great actress, I thought she was decent in sageuks.

Haven't seen Baek Jin-hee in anything so can't comment on her, but love the rest of the lead cast (assuming the ladies accept).
Love Jung Yumi (actually love both Jung Yumis - tho the other JY is the better actress) and Kim Myung-min - what can you say (really need to watch some of his other stuff, having seen only parts of IAYSS and the Detective K films).
When I 1st started hearing about Yoo Ah-in - was wondering what all the fuss was about.
Then watched "The Man/He Who Can't Marry" (starring Ji Jin-hee) and got it (TM/HWCM is a gem - a quirky, but well written and finely acted romcom which unfortunately did not get big ratings - great cast all-around).
