Yoo Ah-in courted to headline Six Flying Dragons
by girlfriday
It’s nice to get some casting movement for the highly anticipated sageuk Six Flying Dragons, the newest project from writers Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon of Tree With Deep Roots and Queen Seon-deok. They’re reteaming with PD Shin Kyung-soo, who worked with them on Tree, for what will be SBS’s big 25th anniversary special presentation drama. After early plans for Unprecedented fell through and then Six Flying Dragons got pushed to the fall, I was worried that it’d be another year before we ever got to see their comeback.
But now an offer is out to Yoo Ah-in (Secret Love Affair) to star in the series, which acts as a prequel to Tree With Deep Roots. It details the life of Yi Bang-won, who became King Taejong of Joseon, and was the father of King Sejong the Great. Yoo Ah-in is being courted to play the central character Yi Bang-won, which I guess in canon makes him Song Joong-ki’s father (Song Joong-ki played the young King Sejong in Tree). See, the universe just wants you two to always be connected!
The drama even plans to have little callbacks to characters from Tree With Deep Roots who would be young men in the prequel. The characters mentioned were Mu-hyul, Lee Bang-ji, Hwang-hee, Lee Shin-jeok, and Jo Mal-saeng.
The six flying dragons refers to a panegyric called “Song of Flying Dragons,” which eulogizes the virtue of Yi Seong-gye’s ancestors, comparing their ancestral roots to a deep-rooted tree (natch). Yi Seong-gye had six sons, and their princely strife for power was legendary in the early days of the Joseon dynasty; among them, his fifth son Yi Bang-won was the most ambitious, and he began murdering his brothers until he secured his seat as the third king of their newly founded nation.
He’s known historically as an “iron and blood” king, a strong-willed absolute monarch who was sharp and unyielding. If he takes on the role, Yoo Ah-in will portray the character as an ambitious man who takes what he wants and acts swiftly and decisively while sparing his words. I like this role for Yoo Ah-in, who was earlier courted for the split-personality drama Dr. Frankenstein, which he ultimately turned down. This’ll be a meaty character in a buzz drama, and it makes me excited to see how the cast will fill out.
Six Flying Dragons plans to wrap up casting in May and begin shoots, and is scheduled to air in September.

which I guess in canon makes him Song Joong-ki’s father
the universe really does want them to be connected, just like you said!
But if he does accept, it's going to be his last one for a while. Military service calls after that T__T (and just as Song Joong-ki gets out!)

Good choice for a leading man. Can they call back Han Suk-Kyu and Song Joong-ki to play their own character please!!! I'd love to see the veteran actors back too, Cho Jin-Woong,Woo Hyeon, Jun Sung-Hwan, Ahn Seok-Hwan and Lee Jae-Yong. That will make my year.
I hope it's not going to be a 50 episode sageuk.

Anyone else really concerned that if he takes on a drama this long he could get forced into his military service mid-drama (ala Kim Nam Gil in Bad Guy)? Or do they not do that anymore? Worrying!

Oh goodness. I hope he has no trouble with finishing this project. I had already assumed he was in the military. Would love to see him in another drama before he enlists, but definitely don't want another Bad Guy situation.

I like historical dramas. And I liked the Great Queen and Tree with Deep Roots. I have hope that this will be good and that I'll like it too.
(Not gonna lie, I also like Yoo Ah-in.)

But.. but... then this means I'll end up fancying Yi Bang-won and that's just SO NOT RIGHT.
One can have lustful thoughts about King Sejong the Great, King Sukjong, King Jeongjo, King Gwanghae, Crown Price Sado, Crown Prince Sohyeon, and Anpyeong-daegun.
But never Yi Bangwon and Sejo. That goes against all that is good and decent.

If Sejo aka Grand Prince Suyang is like Lee Jung Jae (The Face Reader) I won't resist it :D

50 eps? Why can't they make it 30 eps? The other 20 eps end up being boring filler anyway. Even Queen SeonDeok went downhill after Mishil's death. sigh

This is amongst the most unnecessary and irrelevant comments I've read in a while. I'd have argued, but like I said - its irrelevant. So maybe find an appropriate post to lay out your LMH-'hate' if you're really that desperate.

You have almost the same word for word comment on koala's website...
Granted I may not be a fan of LMH but there is no need to make such comments which you know will rile his fans and make you come across as a troll.

It's May already and I'm kind of afraid that the preparation will be so time-consuming that he will have to be forced to leave for army. I hope it won't happen because I really want him to take this role!
This would be his comeback to big 3 station after quite a long time, I suppose? Guess it's time to prove that Yoo Ah In can do a good drama (Secret Love Affair was a success but still, it was a cable drama)

Whoever the leads, I hope the story not only focus on politics all the time. It will so boring. Yes I know saeguk is strongly related to history that we can't easily make up just for the sake of viewers, but still I'm hoping the writer could give us combination of politics or conflicts, comedy and love story in it. Years ago, I really liked watching kungfu series from China and enjoyed those dramas a lot because the writers really know how to dotting us with beautiful martial arts, pretty costumes, great actors, clear storyline with not forgetting to give love story and comedy sense too.
I found mostly saeguk dramas (especially the one that based on history) lack of those parts.

Aaah...Ah-in! I don't really watch sageuks, but I watched almost all the ones with him in it :-D
And Joong ki! So he's out of military, but YAI is going in? Well, I guess that's better than them BOTH going together!
