Sung Joon offered lead in Chaebol’s Daughter

Now that the first set of potential leads have passed on SBS’s Chaebol’s Daughter (that would be Moon Geun-young and Park Seo-joon), the drama’s out to court more actors, and Sung Joon (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) is currently considering the leading role.
The character he’s up to play would be the male lead who grew up extremely poor and watched his parents being sneered at and belittled. Although his smarts and talents were recognized from a young age, that background has hardened him; as an adult, he’s become the kind of person who only takes interest in things that profit him, who rejects things ruthlessly when he decides against them. Naturally that worldview will be challenged when he meets the heroine, a woman who hides her filthy-rich chaebol background and works a lowly part-time job, while hoping to find somebody who could love her for herself instead of her money.
Park Hyung-shik (Heirs) was recently cast to play another of the leads (from the sound of it, it’s the second lead); his character grew up rich and pampered, spending money easily and brimming with confidence. He works as a high-level director of a department store, which he assumes he will inherit. So, basically the privileged rival to the hard-working and self-made hero.
One thing I like about Sung Joon (among all the other things I like about Sung Joon) is that he seems to like jumping from genre to genre, and taking on all sorts of characters and personality types. His recent choices include the swoony romantic lead (I Need Romance 3), the broody bad boy (Shut Up: Flower Boy Band), the nice-guy second lead (Discovery of Romance), and the mysterious villain (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) — so while not all his choices have been to my liking, I do like that he’s exploring. That’s my glass-half-full way of looking at Hyde and Gu Family Book, yup.
Chaebol’s Daughter has yet to confirm its titular heroine, but one assumes casting will be wrapping up soon; I expect to hear word of her casting any day now. The series will be a Monday-Tuesday drama to premiere in June.

yessssss, finally he gets the shot at broadcast drama lead that he's deserved for the last two years now!
Too bad Han Groo isn't the prospective female lead, because I would SO be down with a Can We Get Married reunion, even a cross-couple one. I hope he accepts, and thank god it's a lead role so he won't be wasted like in GFB and Hyde.
PS: Speaking of Gu Family Book alumnae and casting news, Lee Yubi's apparently been confirmed as the cross-dressing female lead of Scholar Who Walks The Night..... I am so ready to uncork the champagne.

Yeah, why not her? I think she would be perfect for this. Could they go back to her and ask if she would be the lead on this one? I read conflicting reports that she'd signed up for 2nd lead for this, and another that she'd turned it down.

If they offered the lead role to Moon Geun-young, then chances are the role rumoured to be offered to Han Groo was only a second lead.
Now that they're looking at Sung Joon for the lead, I really hope they revisit the Han Groo option and court her for lead this time, she's worked with both this team AND this costar before and done great.

Really? I read reports that Kim So Eun was confirmed for that role? I'm getting dizzy with all these back and forths. Could you cite where you read the report? I would love to read it up myself. Thanks!

I read it on soompi's news section, the post specified that Lee Yubi was playing the cross-dressing character who is the lead female protagonist.
Previous articles on Kim So-eun's confirmation have not clearly stated what her role was, or gone back and forth about it. (I'll give the pink below so my whole post doesn't get caught in the spam filter)

I thought he didn't have much to do in GFB because there were way too many characters in that drama. More than him, YYS was wasted, I thought. I'm glad he's finally headlining his own drama though, he really deserves to move out of the second lead territory.
Now I just hope they find a suitable actress to co-star. Someone his age preferably, I feel we don't get same age couples anymore these days.

Now that I have seen Han Groo in a cameo in Super Daddy Yeol, I need her back on my screen asap.
1. If they had previously offered her the second female lead which she apparently turned down then its time to go back and offer her the lead role.
2. If they haven't offered anything at all, they need to run and offer her the lead role.
Either way, please can we have Han Groo for this, she is so perfect for this role.
If none of that can happen, then I want Baek Jin Hee

Ahhh, I am excited for him. I also strongly dislike all his boring second-fiddle nice guy roles (I Need Romance 3 included, lol, even though he was first-fiddle).
I think he'd be good as the guy with a chip on his shoulder who slowly opens up. I have no qualms about his acting at just some of his choices, lol. But, this I can get behind.
I don't really have any ideas for any leading ladies...it'd be cool if it was Baek Jin Hee or someone he's never worked with before. Where are you Im Joo Eun?? *yodels on a mountain for her to appear*

let's hope they and HB, Sung Joon etc have worked off their share of bad project karma for the rest of their careers now, and never end up in dramas like those again. Though they deserve credit for not sucking at acting despite absolutely terrible writing.

I know that doctor stranger was poor script but good in rating average 13-14% and always got in top 20 of Korea in daily chart not like Hyde,Jekyll,me. That's why people called Lee Jong suk never failed in rating, pinocchio and DS are 1 or 2 percent rating difference. Koreans like DS.
DS leads expect JSY went on well after DS.

It's not that they liked it, more like they give Lee Jong Syk credit for acting well even with a bad script.
and LJS himself gave an interview around Pinocchio time where he said he was not happy with DS/his work in it. Too polite to blame the bad script of course, but he seemed to accept that it was successful even if it made him feel bad as an actor.

I just adored Sung Joon in Shut Up Flower Boy Band, he was one of my favorite drama characters ever...
I agree some of his roles were lacking, but as jb says, I appreciate that he plays such different characters. I wish he'd accept this lead role (wasn't too happy with him as a 2nd lead in Jekyll and Hyde...), and that his impersonation would be so strong and convincing that I would end up watching the show for itself, and not because of my SUFBB nostalgia... The character sounds pretty interesting, too!

The only way I'm watching this drama now is if they cast a female lead I really like. I like the premise but not Sung Joon. I have nothing against but he just bores me for some reason. I hope it's going to be a rom-com and not a melodrama.

I love Sung Joon to bits <3 <3 <3, and I’d sacrifice ANYTHING from kdramaland if he would be able to score a leading role in a primetime big 3 drama and a girl, as well. Just as long as he wouldn’t be paired alongside the girl-who-shall-not-be-named, but nah, not gonna jinx it.
Were the female lead role being offered to Han Groo at one point? Or was it for the Scholar who Walks the Night instead? I must have gotten both shows mixed up by now. But her and Sung Joon would be my kind of dreamy, ideal pair ah :’)
PLEASE PLEASE accept this role! I need him back on my screen stat, so that would at least erase some of the not-so-fond memories I had of him from HJM eeeeep.

I feel like he's already played the guy with the chip in his shoulder.. Wasn't his SUFBB character chipped to the tee? I liked his turn in INR3, but I don't think this role gives him that much growing room. Nonetheless, his voice draws me in like nothing else, so I might be suckered into listening into this show for his sake.

Since so many people are talking abut Jung So Min, can someone please tell me why we haven't heard casting rumors from her?! Twenty was a huge success from what I hear, and she was main female lead. Where is she ;______;

oh wow he's finally getting the lead!
To be honest, I don't find his acting that awesome all the time like his time in Lie to me and Gu Family Book or maybe he was just not getting a better script because he's always the second lead but his "other guy" syndrome has been growing on me for years that after watching Hyde Jekyll Me, I just want him to get the lead for once.
Here is a guy who have always worked so hard as a second lead and is now finally getting the lead he deserves. cheers!

Is he good at actings? Not because I wanna bash but because I'm not familiar with him. I just saw one of his work Discovery of Romance, but his actings just average. I enjoyed Yoon Hyun Min more than him. Not sure maybe because Eric is too dominating the show's presence. But he seems really hard working because after just few months finishing one drama, he already started filming another one. ANyway, good luck for him.
