Star cast confirmed for healing romance Descended From the Sun
by javabeans
This isn’t surprising news (since both casting possibilities were reported a while ago), but at least it’s confirmed: Song Hye-gyo (That Winter, the Wind Blows) will be teaming with Song Joong-ki (Nice Guy) in the drama Descended From the Sun, which is the new project from the Heirs, Gentleman’s Dignity, and Secret Garden writer Kim Eun-sook.
It makes for a high-powered lineup, particularly as it’ll be Song Joong-ki’s comeback project after serving his two years in the military, though the other names aren’t too shabby either. Joining the two Songs will be Kim Ji-won (Gap-dong, Heirs) and Jin Gu (Roaring Currents) in supporting roles — pretty solid main cast all around, I think.
The “blockbuster-scale human melodrama” is set in the world of doctors stationed overseas in war zones, and follows the love story that develops between an army surgeon and a special forces officer, both elite in their respective fields. The story will track both their personal and professional struggles while exploring issues about the value of life, with “love bringing about miracles.” Perhaps that’s just a metaphor for emotional healing, but when you’re a medic in a war-torn nation, the miracles and rescued lives could very well be literal.
Kim Ji-won plans another army surgeon, while Jin Gu plays another special forces soldier, and the two will share a “special romance.” With those character descriptions, I hope special means something more than a mere repeat of the main couple — though if anything, the mirrored setup should present the opportunity to draw interesting contrasts.
Descended From the Sun airs on KBS later this year.

sorry for piggy-backing on your comment but i just wanted to see if everyone else shared the same opinion about something. I am happy that he chose this & i mean, come on. look at him. it's like god made him for noona romances. yes i know the age thing isn't going to be the focus of this drama but i was just saying. but i can't help thinking "i wish he had taken the In Time With You remake". i have seen that drama, love it (LI DA REN. ENOUGH SAID) & i feel like SJK could have done it really well. however, at the end of the day, I am just happy that SJK is in a drama!

With what other dramas the writer has under belt, I am a bit skeptical. I hope for our Song Joong-ki that it would be the writer's most coherent project.

As long as Kim Ji Won isn't bitchy second lead again, it's pretty much perfect cast.
Now, all I can hope is Kim Eun Sook write decent drama, not necessarily good/amazing/perfect drama, just decent will do. After Heirs disaster, that's as much as I can hope.

As far as I've read, there won't be any love triangle, just 2 different couples who will not only have couply moments, but they'll also fight to survive and help others survive, so the bitchiness will be probably nonexistent or at least very limited.

I pity every female lead in this writer's drama but what the heck!I still watch it though while still hopping the female lead can kick some a__ too..kekeke
Hope Song hye kyo choses a rom com after That Winter but I guess that's not her cup of tea anymore..I miss seeing her in rom com..Full house was centuries ago..
Song joong ki always delievers and I'm looking forward to how hot he became after military.(not that he isnt hot before but you know what I mean.)keke
The only project that I've seen Kim Ji Won is in Heirs but though her character is unlikeable, she's one of the fresh face i Heirs that looks to have a promising career..
Jin Gu, not familiar but curious how he will be with the rest of the cast..

Still not sure about this two. I love them both individually. But looking at the pics I still can't see them as a couple. SHK looks young but doesn't really suit well with a baby face actor. I'll have to watch this drama just to see if they can pull of being a couple. I know Jihyo is about the same age as Song Hye Kyo and during the early days of RM SJK and Jihyo have amazing chemistry I could totally see them as a couple in real life. BUT that was back then now I don't thing Song Ji Hyo and Song Joong Ki would have the same chemistry now because Jihyo has become more mature much like Song Hye Kyo who gives a mature classy vibe.

The unfortunate placing of those two photos show how young SJK looks and how SHK looks older than him. However, pictures are deceiving. What's important is that both can carry out their roles well and have great chemistry too.
Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub was an odd pairing when they first accepted "Master's Sun". People were anxious and worry that this pair wouldn't work. Yet, both have an amazing chemistry in "Master's Sun". I'm hoping SJK and SHK will have sizzling chemistry in this drama. :)

Okay so if we get a gentlemen's dignity type of drama it's going to be good, and I hope she is somehow going for that direction as the protagonistes portrayed are older. If it goes the heirs way, well it's probably going to be a hit and i'm going to watch it all will being angry but I'm probably still going to watch it all. The cast is strong and I think it's not that easy to bring Song hye Kyo to the screen, as she is doing well in movies in korea and in china so I'm hoping that it's a sign that the script is good + I see Song Joon Ki as an actor who usually is regarding on the type of material he goes into so... I'm crossing my fingers for this to be a good drama, because the premiss of it sounds really interesting.

I am actually hoping to NOT see another Gentleman's Dignity. We are supposedly dealing with professionals in a war-torn area, the last thing we need is a heroine with the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old and a hero who is a first class a**, start to finish.
I haven't really liked anything this writer has done since City Hall - Secret Garden was OK, but Gentleman's Dignity was chock full of jerky guys and weak, crying females. And Heirs...the less said, the better.

Right on! The "heroine with the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old" drove me far, far away from A Gentleman's Dignity, what would otherwise have been a tolerable drama.

i'm not worried about the song joong ki and song hye kyo pairing like so many people seem to be because i believe in their acting abilities enough (especially sjk) to believe in them as a pairing tbh. i remember back when the lee seung gi/ha ji won pairing was announced for king 2 hearts and how skeptical people were of them as a potential couple and that worked out great chemistry-wise.
this cast is great, the only thing worth worrying about is the writing. a good cast can only do so much. here's hoping the material they get is up to par.

Oh god, that part in California was just laughably horrible. I hope we won't get terrible Engrish here like we did in The Heirs and The King 2 Hearts. Why do they always get non-American extras to play Americans? LOL. The English-speaking parts in dramas are always so cringe-worthy.
On a different note, I like all four leads separately. Together, I'll have to wait and see to judge. I'm quite hesitant about the SHK-SJK pairing but I believe their acting skills will be enough to make it work. The writer I'm not confident in. Secret Garden was okay, Gentleman's Dignity I quite liked, haven't seen City Hall but I've been meaning to as I hear it's quite good, but Heirs is something best buried and forgotten. But then again, the script here must be decent enough for both SJK and SHK to feel it's a project worth going into.

At least the cast can act. I really like Jin Gu. I never finished Ad Genius LTB, but he was good in Roaring Currents.
I was hoping Kim Ji-won would get a lead role next, but glad she's back in dramaland at least. (Did she pass 'The Girl Who Sees Smells' for this?) I'm not really complaining, she'll at least get some exposure.
As for KES, she has written good series like City Hall and On Air. I liked A Gentleman's Dignity as well. I won't snub her even though I really disliked Heirs. I think it deserves a fair watch at least. Plus, I'm curious about the lead pairing. SHK and SJK are both capable actors in my mind, and I'm optimistic that they'll have good chemistry on screen.
I hope that if this drama is successful as well, more will be inspired to pre-produce dramas. Seriously, the live-shoot system is awful.

Kim Ji Won was never offered Girl Who Sees Smell, her company confirmed this. In fact, I suspect that was noise marketing by the same company to see if people would want her to be in it, and if there was enough buzz, maybe she would have gotten an offer. But I don't think there was much buzz.

I watched Secret Garden a few years ago after reading recaps/comments on DB, and didn't think it was that great. Heirs...let's not even go there. If it wasn't for Lee Min Ho & Kang Min Hyuk I wouldnt have bothered finishing it. Characters & story so poorly written.
I really rate SJK as an actor, even watched Nice Guy for him even though melos are not my usual cup of tea, and thoroughly enjoyed his acting in Wolf Boy. He seems to pick his projects based on substance/meaty characters so I'm hoping KES proves my doubts about her writing ability wrong.

Ugh... I adore Joong-ki and am super excited to see him in projects again. But I just don't feel this project at all. The writer's past dramas (although I know they're ratings hits and always attract high profile casts) have been pretty hit or miss for me-- I LOVE her comedy, but not her angsty arcs and subpar character development, so my enjoyment of her past dramas has really been super dependent on actor chemistry for me. I just don't know if I feel the chemistry between this leading pair, since they definitely have very different vibes. I've also never found Song Hye-Gyo particularly winsome or charming; she's more of an aloof beauty compared to Joong-ki's bubbly, younger enthusiasm and charm.
