Hello Beanies! This month is really flying by....on to the reviews!

Missing Noir M Kang Ha Neul <3 Overall I’m really liking this. There is a tendency though to try and write these genius characters with complicated cases, but then everyone is so caught up in the uber intelligence that the detectives miss some of the really basic logical things. I shouldn’t be able to make connections before the genius. On the other hand, I like the way this was shot and the way it played out and there were some nice ideas and twists in it (but I prefer mysteries where all the pieces are there and you just have to figure out how to put them together instead of key parts being revealed at the last moment). There is a lot of the “Bad Guys” feel in this and there was a lot I liked about that show too. I hope that our main guys backstory is fairly straight forward though.
Running Man I’m back to enjoying most of these episodes. I think the plot was weak (I really thought it would be almost impossible for those ladies to lose), and that it seemed almost like things were rushed/cut short, but there were a lot of great interactions in it and I got in a few good laughs. I cannot wait for Il Woo/Hongki/Young Hwa!!

Blood I spent a lot of time trying to catch up on this…still not fully caught up but getting close. I like that it has moments of self-awareness like our lead retorting that of course he wears somber colors, what would she want him to wear…a sparkling suit in the forest? Oh Twilight. But there’s still something lacking in this show. I think it’s mostly the writing. It feels very much like there are certain themes and plot points that the writers want to hit but the path to getting to them is very inorganic. The characters especially feel inconsistent and their changes or arcs unearned.

Murphy’s Law of Love This is super cute actually. Some rom-com fluff that I needed. I was nervous cause there is basically the rich chaebol lead (I know, he’s Taiwanese so not a chaebol), but he’s much less of a jerkface than I feared. In fact it’s seeming much more like Pride & Prejudice which I love. On the other hand, I didn’t realize it was just one episode a week – that’s going to be agony.

Girl Who Sees Smells Really liking this and I look forward to each episode, but I don’t think it’s one that will stick with me. There’s one scene in episode four where we see someone carving the barcode into an arm…and I’m actually pretty sure I recognize the bottom portion of the face. Things are also happening more quickly than I expected but that makes me excited for future plot development. I think they’re intentionally giving us a lot of misdirection as well.

@4D
Blood - in the hands of a more prolific writer and more experienced director, the script and pace would be much more fluid. It's still an entertaining show for me although I agree that it's not the best piece of work in terms of writing. I do find the lead actors improving a lot and JJH is an awesome actor.

@4D
Girl Who Sees Smells - If you see the whole episode, you will realize that the crime and person shown is isolated from the central plot/bar code serial killings. The serial killer will turn out to be someone we totally didn't expect. At least I hope so. I love the mystery/suspense factor. I'm also loving the chemistry between the leads and how they work well together. Perfect for each other!! And unlike regular drama couples, no useless bickering or love-hate relationships!

when every clue leads to one person... it is too suspicious.
but that the thing. our brain works "I want to be right, but I also want to believe people are good" we have this built-in conflict. we are suspicious, but we want to deny the possibility of someone being the bad guy at the same time. and thats why it is so hard to determine who is guilty. thats why judges get paid that much. our brains want everyone to be the good guys, but at the same time, that very feeling makes us paranoid.

hello.
you know, last week watching "Smelly girl" as it is conveniently shortened, I had a feeling Yoochun was eating like a panda, then I remembered he actually dressed up as one in Rooftop Prince. Haa. I had forgotten.
bad news here: one of our Big Three TV channels, TV3, is leaving from free distribution. They aired everything from Estonian "Idol" show and our version of "Your face sounds familiar" :-( meh. those were the oly shows I went to watch (from my grannys´tele. I don ´t have one).

biting my nails about Scholar casting. I really wish Kim So Eun would be the lead instead of second lead. Is it the first time ever Jin Se Yeon has backed out of anything? Glad to see Soo Hyuk in the line-up, but I feel like he is getting typecast again. He was good in a "normal", dramatic role. Still, better with than without him. Though my alternative drama suggestion Vampire Carpenter wouldn´t be bad either. I love thinking of alternative versions for dramas.

by the way, I... I... umm...you know how there is a new web page for...umm... international, umm...and I, umm...I know I am a bit old for that, but... nope, can´t tell you. pogo can guess perhaps.

I started on Ho Gu´s love after all. It is weird and a little confusing (no, lots confusing). and somehow streaming disappears on me for this drama.

question: what do you watch from television, which channels and shows, and what would you do if they suddenly decided to stop airing?

"what do you watch from television, which channels and shows, and what would you do if they suddenly decided to stop airing?"

Hmm, I hardly watch television these days except on weekends, when the local english channel has special movies on. I tried watching US tv shows but I've made peace with the fact that I don't have patience for never-ending seasons, and only watch selected episodes based on recommendations of friends, eg Doctor Who, Agent Carter, BBC Sherlock etc. I guess I wouldn't really care in that case then? I tried local tv shows, but there's not enough substance to make me care about the characters and the plot, so not much loss there either.

I also used to watch many c-dramas, given that they were (still are) available on the small screen on the two local chinese channels. My thing would normally be wuxia (sageuk, basically), and/or fluffy romcoms. They form a large part of my childhood, so I'd probably be devastated if the channel were to be discontinued. (Maybe burn down something.) Thankfully, that's not likely to be the case, unless the entertainment scene wants to anger the chinese majority.

Increasingly I find myself drawn to filipino tv shows (via cable channels) hahah, because suddenly my mom wants me to be more interested in my own culture. I'm still getting used to hearing my language for one hour straight, but so far it's been an enjoyable ride. So I'd probably be sad if the channel becomes unavailable. But, meh.

Fanfiction is infinitely more interesting to me nowadays, though, it seems. And kdrama, I can always find online(:

I only watch kbs world on my TV if I have time to actuallt sit in front of it :P , that's the only decent channel that brings out good programs these days.
also, I can add our national channel OmanTV which is the default channel for each household here.
95% of the time I watch shows the laptop...

Oh...let's see.

I'm watching "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", "Face-Off" (a reality show about special effects makeup), "Game of Thrones", "Orphan Black", "Walking Dead", "Grimm", "Missing Noir M" & "Blood".

I'm waiting impatiently for "Ripper Street" & "True Detective, S2".

If they stopped? I'd be sad. But for two of them, there'd still be books to read, and for the others, I'd find fan fiction to read. :)

It's over. And I now know what the title means. This drama either SHINES (the first 23 episodes) OR GOES CRAZY (the final.)

I'm SO frustrated/disappointed with the STUPID/silly last episode, that I have to do what I did last time this happened. (Gu Family book, I'm looking at you.) I must write my own ending.

Here's what I think SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

Episode 24
So and Shin Yool are wading in freezing water. She loses consciousness. So, remembers that the doctor said she had to be immersed so he dunks both of them completely under the water. She sputters, opens her eyes, then collapses.

In the shack Shin Yool's is under blankets. So is sitting on a stool, shivering and dripping. The doctor says it was a success. So smiles until the doctor continues, “she will now live as a normal healthy person for another 3 or 4 weeks, a couple of months, tops. Then her heart will just stop.” So makes a wounded animal noise. Shin Yool looks at him sadly and asks, “did you think it would be a permanent cure? Would you have not done it had you known?” So grimaces and says, “Silly girl. I would live in the freezing water for the rest of my life if it gave me one more minute with you!” Shin Yool reaches for him and Baek-Myo/Nanny stops her saying, “Prince So is soaking wet.” The doctor says, “you need to get out of those clothes or you'll get sick.”

We get a gratuitous shirtless Jang Hyuk scene while So removes his wet clothes. Nanny hands him a blanket and drapes his princely robes near the fire to dry. Shin Yool (eying him) says, “I know it worked, doctor. I'm feeling hotter already!” The doctor says, “go for it.” (Or however he would say this in old Goryeo.) He and Nanny excuse themselves and leave. Fade.

Next scene: So escorts a disguised Shin Yool and Nanny back to the trading business. Yang Gyu-Dal, (Shin's bumbly fake brother), Gang-Myeong (Shin Yool's loving, awesome fake Dad) and Gyeong (the loyal mute/not mute) greet her. They discuss how with Shin Yool's limited time it would be STUPID for her to do a noble idiot schtick. Instead she will use her time left helping the man she loves. So says while he hates the thought of her in danger, he hates the thought of not having her by his side more. He'll protect her. They all go to their servant village. So's black ninja brigade is stationed at all the exits. They know when the spies see Shin Yool alive, they'll run back and snitch to Shin-ryuk--which is exactly what happens. A bunch of spies are sliced on their way. But the woman and man spy who riled up the towns people go into the room where Shin Yool is hugging her friends and being congratulated for not being dead. The woman spy pulls a knife from her skirt. Yang Gyu-Dal jumps in front of her (redeeming himself) and gets cut. Gang-Myeong, twists the woman's head off (special effects?) and Gyeong kills the man spy.

End of my first post

And I only say stupid because I thought it was stupid. if a person liked the show"s ending I am not saying they are stupid. Just, for me, the final reeked.

I became not interested in the story as it progressed. 24 eps is way too long for this silly plot. I found that both main leads are somewhat lacking. Oh Yeon Seo never impressed me, her face is quite pretty but her big eyes do not give much emotion. On the other hand, Lee Ha Nui was good in the role but the character of the Princess was somewhat undeveloped. I never liked Jang Hyuk despite of his popularity. He was quite strong in certain dramas but I thought that he was a bit over reacting in this drama. Is it because of the plot line where he was forced play in more dramatic gesture?

Anyway, I watched the last eps for the sake of finishing...without much anticipation but I must say the ending was worse than I anticipated.

Ending actually fits the history-kind of (but they didn't have to).
So Who was this guy Wang So in actual history? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangjong_of_GoryeoGwangjong (925 – 4 July 975), personal name Wang So, was the fourth king of Goryeo. He was known for squashing his political rivals and creating an atmosphere of fear within the political realm at the time. He had two wives- Queen Daemok, his half-sister and Lady Gyeonghwagung , his niece,
During his reign, he actually seemed like shined first (with all his achievement), and went crazy later (purge, purge, purge), perfectly fitting with his name king Gwang(jong)- You know that 'Gwang' means shine or crazy in Chinese letter.
BTW I loved some beautiful melo moment. And my fav was whenever GaeBong called WangSo 'Hyungnim'.

Part II my new & improved last episode of “SHINE OR GO CRAZY”

The confrontation scene between So and Shin-ryuk starts the same way. But Shin Yool is there, in disguise. So throws down his sword (the same) but Poong grabs him and Shin-ryuk holds a sword at So's neck and threatens to kill him if the people don't grab their weapons and fight. Shin Yool (who's had enough) marches up and rips off a fake mustache.

“You ruin my family's livelihood! You sent an assassin to murder me. And now you'll kill the man I love? I don't think so!” Like those slow motion shots where a person stands in front of a impending car crash instead of running—Shin-ryuk stares, unmoving as Shin Yool grabs a sword off the ground, and stabs him in the heart. He dies. Poong yells, “appa! I was going to be king” and starts to swing his sword at Shin Yool. So grabs the blade, cutting his hand. Eun-Chun runs Poong through with a sword.

Everybody cheers. So and Yang Gyu-Dal go to the doctor place where Shin yool donates free medical stuff to get sewn up.

King Jeongjong announces to his subjects--there for a big national celebration—that he's abdicating. So will be their king. Everyone cheers. Yeo-won calls for Shin Yool to meet with her privately. She apologizes for trying to kill her. Shin Yool apologizes for unknowingly marrying her husband first. She says, “I'm going to die soon.” Yeo-won says, “I know. I'm trying to be compassionate, although I don't know how, but I figure if I treat you well, So might give me a chance after you're dead.”

Prince Woon enters the room, drinks tea, and announces he's going to China.

So is crowned. Yeo-won sits on his right. Shin Yool sits next to her, (a little lower.) They do a bunch of country enlightening stuff. (Montage.)

Wook is shown arriving in China. He sees someone cutting firewood. (It's a cameo by Oh Yeon-Seo.) Since he's always only loved women who look like her, his dating pool is limited. He asks the wood cutting look-a-like if she is healthy. Annoyed, (at this rude guy) she says, “I'm cutting firewood, aren't I? If I had a bad heart, could I do this?” He then asks if she's married. She sighs (big time) and says, “I'm cutting firewood, aren't I? If I were married wouldn't my husband be doing this!” Wook gets off his horse and hugs her. She slaps his face and he just beams. (Fade out.)

We now go back to the first scene where the kids were running in the palace. The old counselor tells them that their dad (the king) will be upset if he sees that they've gone into rooms they shouldn't be in, but Yeo-won enters saying, “do you want to hear a true story?” They excitedly answer, “yes, Oma!” (Or whatever term the royal children call their mother.)

“I want to tell you about a woman who brought light to and changed the lives of everyone who knew her. Let me tell you her story. . .”

The end.

Way better, huh?

I liked him too. (And thought he deserved a better ending.) I also think they gave him a better wig near the end. (or did I just get used to it? I'll have to go look at early episodes and check.) That's one thing I really liked about this drama, that all of the bad guys didn't stay bad. Some got worse and some got much better.

SPOILER ALERT!

The first wig was terrible, totally drag-queenish. It looked better when his hair was up during the flash back scene with his first love. They must have read the fan's complains and gave him a better one towards the end.

Your ending makes more sense but I guess they wanted something different from the novel and historical records. If the story was all politics like Tree With Deep Roots then I'd be ok with it but why go deep into love and sacrifice only to throw it away in the end. Argh....

Happy friday beanies?

How are you all? Hope you had a nice easter that was not taken up with uni work like mine.

Lately i've been missing my kdrama toddlers a lot. Yesterday i got an update from them in form of a picture of two of the boys (rival and sidekick) bolding a doll with the message "they were saying they were married and arguing about who should stay at home to look after the baby" so cute.

dramaland:
So many shows so far behind. Ho-do's love ended and i was okay with it. The sister's love story troubles still annoy me a bit. As did the "i am not gay" resolution (i would have been fine had the show made a case that sometimes you fall for a person not gender a bit better but oh well).

Also started seeing the japanese drama Hana Moyu mostly for inoue mao.

Also started adnormal sumit. That show is kinda addictive and makes me want to participate in the discussion at times.

Avid follower of Abnormal Summit, here. It has developed a life of its own and turned into something interesting and innovative, to everyone's surprise, I am sure. There is a spin-off show, Where is My Friend's Home, and those of us watching it have our fingers crossed as the Eng subs may or may not continue to come. Augh! The perils of not speaking or at least understanding the language. Which the panel of Abnormal Summit tackled, now, didn't they! Happy watching.

Oh, and sometimes a few of us go off on an Abnormal Summit tangent on the weekly Roommate post on my blog, but now Roommate is on the brink, as well, so I dunno, there seem to be choppy waters ahead for the reality shows I enjoy. :/

Tried my first C-drama-"Boss and Me" aka "Shan Shan Comes to Eat".Shan Shan was absolutely adorable and the show was cute though it got a bit boring in the later episodes. It should have been 10 episodes shorter and then it would be perfect. But overall I still enjoyed it a lot.

Starter another Jdrama after finishing 'Date'-"Mondai no Aru Restaurant" and it's awesome! Currently at episode 06 and I like it even more than 'Date'.

13 hours ago someone broke into my house,it was about 2:30 am(was not asleep was marathoning valid love)he only managed to get in downstairs. when I heard him breaking the door I rang my father who just happened to have slept in the adjoining house, when the burglar heard him he took off anyway, I can't sleep it's all been weird.
1.he didn't take anything, why? So odd
2.the neighbours dog didn't bark even as the thief ran off, it only barked when my dad and bro came out.
3.why didn't I scream?
4.even with all the ruckus of the aftermath, non of the neighbours came out of their houses.
5.so many questions running through my mind, was he sent?did he come to steal, does he know I live alone...
Feeling weird and pissed off that I'm walking around the house with a knife but very aware that I'm safe only by the Grace of God, it could have been a terrible situation.
Since I couldn't fall asleep,I managed to finish valid love, it was very frustrating and as I was watching I kept regretting watching it but I had to know what happened in the end. I was satisfied with the ending but I wouldn't watch it again.

Glad you're okay & the burglar ran away when he heard your dad. Beef up your locks and get an alarm if possible. If you can't get a system, there are really inexpensive door & window alarms you can install yourself. They're sort of like the child proof things you can put on a cabinet that ring if your kid opens it. It may not keep the burglar out but if you're asleep it will definitely wake you and likely scare burglar away too.

Happy friday, beanies! I was sad to have found myself in a drama slump when Pinocchio and Healer ended in January, but thankfully April brings great offerings. (And as a sidenote, does anyone notice how those two dramas are at the end of the recently completed sections of the recapped dramas? I'll be a really sad potato when they disappear for good.)

Hogu's Love: Finished it this week. Generally satisfying, a cute, warm-hearted drama that I'll reserve for rainy days. Plus, I've found myself a new oppa! Love ya, Choi Woo-shik <3

Angry Mom: Picked it up for the mom-daughter relationship, and it doesn't disappoint. I really like the direction it's taking, though it does make me a tad depressed about school life ahah. I'm still torn between cooing at Ji Hyun-woo's character and scorning him. Thankfully, Kim Hee-sun keeps me glued.

Heard It Through the Grapevine: Still can't get over how amazing Bom is. She's an inspiration. The end.

Girl Who Sees Smells: Can I just say I love this title? So adorable and quirky, it's what made me give the show a chance. And boy am I glad I did. Shin Se-kyung and Yoochun alone are worth watching for their cute chemistry (even bts!), and the relationships unfolding are surprisingly quite grounded and real, despite what the wacky premise might suggest. Please continue to be good, dear show. Thank you.

What does it say about me when all the dramas I'm currently following have likeable, nice-guy male leads? To me, at least, decent is the new hotXD

She is awesome. BTW how great was the last ep - how rumor spread -I was dying laughing. - 'Jaebul guy was the one clinging to Bom's sis' went to 'He tried to kill himself' (because word pun) went to 'He managed to survive from his suicide attempt' haha

Bom is the actual best. She's rapidly becoming my favourite kdrama heroine, she's unique among the usual trope-based female protagonists.

And this:

And as a sidenote, does anyone notice how those two dramas are at the end of the recently completed sections of the recapped dramas? I’ll be a really sad potato when they disappear for good.

Pinocchio is the last one now, and I'll be sad when it disappears from the thumbnails too!

also on male leads who are decent people - YES! Every single drama I've liked this year had a hero who was a nice person, from Pinocchio to Kill Me Heal Me to Grapevine and Angry Mom (since Go Bok-dong is not a hero, it's Noah who counts). And the male lead in Let's Eat is a flirt, not a jerk. I love this trend!

I have been waiting for a flirty but nice character, perhaps I should check it out, even though I am not even 1% into food dramas

and you know, I do thing Bok-dong is ultimately nice too. or at least feels a lot of guilt. it is just that he is cornered. I hope all goes well for him, cause I always route for seemingly lost cases.

I'm so happy to see grown adult brothers acting like friends and goofing around with each other, hanging out, talking about relationships, etc. I know it might go sour over Ma-Ri (hopefully not for too long) but it just feels real.

I have 3 adult brothers on good terms with each other and that's how they are when they hang out.

Hi beanies *waves
It's been a long time coming. How are you all? It's been a busy day at work and I am more than ready to destress. Thank gosh it's weekend. What dramas needed to be catch upon? Is Angry Mom as complicated as it was funny at times? Can't think I am able to stomach anything deadly serious in near future. How about The Girl Who Can See Smells? Is it as good as the raves I've been reading all around?
Wish you all a restful weekend, Beanies all over the world!

About "Smelly Girl":

It's not "once in a lifetime" great, but it takes a few risks for a non-cable show. It's a lighthearted non-black rom-com about serial murder with a deliberately overacting heroine and a deliberately underacting hero. The production is sensible, sometimes even inspired, and it doesn't take any of its aspects too seriously.
Far from fantastic, but so far, very good and easy to watch.

Happy Friday!

Just caught up with Heard It Through The Grapevine and all I can say is, it's AMAZING. I love it so much. Everything's so good since episode 1. Sad that the recaps stopped, but happy at the same time because there won't be spoilers and I'll be surprised with whatever will happen next. It's gonna be my favorite this year unless the Hong Sisters fail to deliver.

All the characters are great, even the supporting ones like the tutor, or the chief secretary, and Bom's 100% awesome, but Lawyer Han is my favorite right now. Yoo Joon Sang is my new ajusshi crush, and he reminds me of Uhm Ki Joon when he's being manipulative (like in Golden Cross), but when he's being a heodang, he's definitely Tablo. Hahaha.

Hope it continues to deliver and hope there will be a series review when it ends so a lot of people would know about it and watch.

I was hesitant to watch it too, but had free time over the weekend and procrastinated to watch new episodes of the other current shows I'm following so I told myself to just watch E01 to see if it's any good (I haven't read the recaps before or read any reviews/comments about it so had no expectations whatsoever), and to my surprise it had that "IT" factor, so I finished ep.1-14 in two days.

Don't be afraid of the plot description. You'll be really surprised that it didn't dwell too long on the premise of the show. The twists and turns blew my mind.

You know how Heirs had the potential to be that modern drama but had that sageuk thing going with the relationships? This succeeded where Heirs failed. Modern setting, sageuk feel.

This show has my most favorite (royal) chaebol family ever. The characters are so unexpected that I really can't predict what they're going to do next. I want the untypical protagonists to succeed and fail at the same time (in Bom's case because she's a scary tactician; Chadojigye's been on my mind for days), and the untypical antagonists to fail yet succeed too (Lawyer Han & Madam Choi because they're adorable with the baby & they're so petty and childish sometimes).

I agree that Bom is scary. In sun loved her because she seems so fresh ( no one is like her in his environment) yet smart and headstrong but he surely underestimated her ability. She possess skills good enough to surpass In sung's father. She can be the most scary corporate lawyer in Korea while her husband would be a very kind hearted lawyer to fight for good causes. Unlike most viewers I have a mixed feeling about her character/personality.

0

I am with you, atz. I'm not sure I like this turn in her, especially the way she treated her sister. I feel bad for her family because although they are being helped financially, they have no idea of the ramifications that go along with it. I loved that she used her abilities for revenge, but I almost feel that she's embracing this lifestyle and position a little too readily.

0

@Korazy Lady - I don't think she actually treated her sister badly, keep in mind that the in-law-mandated talk with her in the lunch room was monitored and scripted to the last word, she couldn't even get face-to-face time with her without Secretary Lee at the door to listen and tattle.

The truer measure of Bom's character lies in how upset she was for her sister when she first heard the news, and the plan she put into motion to reverse the damage to her reputation after the meeting.

0

@pogo, you are probably right, but I felt frustrated that she was not able to have any personal interaction with her sister. Even if she's just following the rules perfectly as a means to an end, which I believe is the case, I don't like to see her acting that way. Her sister, knowing the rules of society in Korea, probably accepted it a lot better than I did!

0

It's funny how In-sang's parents are so much more childish than the actual teenagers in the house, lol.

I love how adorable they are with the baby. I feel like it's their first time actually wanting to be around one, since their actual kids were raised by nannies. But at the same time, I love to laugh at their absurdity and pompousness. Yoo Ho-jung especially is amazing at seeming perfect and refined and yet completely petty and full of it at the same time.

Hi Pogo,

Based on kanz's and your suggestion, I started watching Grapevine and like it so far. I'm on episode 9.

*Spoiler*

I agree; In-sang’s parents are so childish compared to the teenagers. It's hilarious to watch them hyperventilate over issues that are serious and complex in their world (which I understand based on their status and reputation), but easily simplified and re-written by Bom. I forget which episode, but I love how Bom just tells it like it is when she catches In-sang's mom and Secretary Lee in her room with the paper talismans. In-sang's mom explains that it's a family tradition and Bom's all like, "Well, it's not a good one. And in the future, let us know first before entering our room." She didn't say it in a mean way either. So Awesome.

0

news - yay, we managed to convince you!

And yeah, Bom is really good at asserting herself in ways that get through to her in-laws and the people around them. She's never rude (that would just make them angry and achieve nothing for her), but still sticks up for herself so effectively.

0

Yes, I love that about her! And she's still a teenager in high school. That certainly makes me wish other female drama characters in their 30s are as well written as her.

0

I couldn't agree more! Need more love for grapevine!!!!

I love Grapevine SO MUCH. It's fun to watch a show where you see so many things that could happen and then something you never thought of does happen. I do wish we had excellent db recaps to make it even better, it would be fantastic to have help with all the nuance I'm sure I'm missing. Every week I can't wait to see what will happen next! And Bom just rocks.

Required fields are marked *

Grapevine is definitely my top drama of 2015 so far - like you said, it is that sageuk-in-a-modern skin that Heirs so badly failed at being (and Yoo Joon-sang really enhances that impression, lol). But then, the writer of Grapevine is smarter and has a story to tell beyond rich people feeling sorry for themselves for falling in love with poor people.

And I actually think one of the drama's great strengths is that it's led by veteran actors who have the nuance and experience to keep us interested in characters who are not 100 percent protagonists. Yoo Joon-sang and Yoo Ho-jung are champs, as is everyone in the cast - not even ONE bad actor, even in minor roles! and Go Ah-sung is amazing as Bom. It's really the story of her journey within this world and this family, and she is more than capable of carrying her part. She's awesome.

Little scene I loved: When Bom's mom gave In-sang face tissue when he was crying, she tore that single pull in half. The tissue giving scenes on Insang's household and his father's office: using lots of pulls then just throwing it away. That was memorable and made me laugh. Showed in a subtle way the difference between their statuses.

Girl Who Sees Smells- So awesome I love it so much, I think it's the drama I love the most since the end of Healer and Pinocchio. If all the behind the scenes stuff is as fun as what they showed after episode 4 I'd gladly trade previews for more behind the scenes stuff.

I'm a bit behind on everything else, Angry Mom and Supperdaddy Yeol, from a combination of waiting for viki to finish subbing and my cousin moved in with us. His wife left him and so Monday he drove down here to Florida from Virginia to live with us for a few months before he heads out to California to live with his brother. My mom invited him to move in because she and his brother seem to think because I'm outwardly at least always calm and well if you don't talk about it first I won't ask about potentially upsetting things, but if you do I'll listen. I have issues in addition to being introverted where I really don't like people, even family, to come into my personal space without a definite plan for leaving. Sigh, I suppose I have to get used to it, thanks for listening to me whine about my non existent problems.

Hey, beanies!

My first time on OT :)

I just have to say that Yoochun and Se Kyung are doing good in GWSS. He is funny while she is so much better in comedy than those melodramas before. Jin Se Yeon should try something like this for a change.

I find Falling for Innocence really interesting because the plot is a bit different from the usual stuff in dramaland. And of course the main leads are good actors. I can't wait for the romance.

Really excited about the coming shows, like Producer and ExGF's Club. I think they're going to be on the same time slot. The former has a stellar cast so it would be a big challenge for the other team, eh? Anyhow, i know i'll be watching and cheering for both!

I tend to only watch dramas when they are actually complete (I have will-power of steel) so I am usually behind everyone else in terms of shows. So this will be a bit old news.

I am currently watching Kill Me, Heal Me and it is SO good. I had watched Hyde Jekyll, Me right before and that drama wasn't nearly as good as KMHM. I struggled to keep watching HJM while KMHM I have to force myself to slow down on watching or I will finish it in two days.

On another note, I am really tired of seeing these uninspired lifeless heroines. Like HJM in Hyde Jekyll, Me or MGY in Cheongdamdong Alice (which I just finished watching). They make the shows boring and uninteresting when your heroines have the personality of a board. HJE is a total weirdo in KMHM and I love it.

What I'm excited to watch once they are done airing is Girl Who Sees Smells, Falling for Innocence and Angry Mom.

Shows I'm interested in watching once they air is Scholar Who Walks the Night (if they can ever find a female lead), Masked Prosecutor and the new Hong Sisters drama.

Finished Date. Great show, the best thing I watched in a long while.

Started Smelly Girl, so far even better than Pinocchio, a show with a similarly coherent concept. The SBS midweek slot seems to be hit-and-miss right now ...

Reluctant towards Falling for Soon Jung/Innocence, the plot is pretty lame, but the character constellation so far has some potential left.

Other than that, I torture myself with Rosy Lovers and, naturally, hate every single second of it. If only I wasn't having a crush on Lee Mi-suk ...

Opps, sorry Jon, I got you confused with John, who I think was watching also. But I agree with both you and @light - it was the best romantic comedy I've seen in a while. I felt it got a little confused at the end. So maybe the people that seem perfect for you on paper, aka the second leads, aren't really the ones for you, but are we supposed to believe it's not true love if there is not constant arguing and fighting? Because my husband and I have never been fighters and we're still going strong for almost 40 years!

Then again maybe I just think too much about these dramas, lol.

Possible DATE spoilers ahead:****

I too wonder about love and marriage in this drama or in general. I am married for 7 years. I know people who are fighters and stay happily married or get divorced. They are trying to convey that marriage is not perfect. But i think what the leads have are 2 communicating people inspite of their differences. Bad luck for the second leads though as the main leads have grown a connection. Still, I understand your questions as you and your partner are non-fighters yet still choose each other As opposed to the fighters in the drama. Since you are married for 40 years, what are your secrets to a lasting marriage? What is compatability to you? Everyone is welcome to answer by the way. If you read this. Haha.

0

Light, I always tell people half luck and half hard work! It 's not like we never fight, but we never curse or say horrible things to each other and there's very little yelling. There's a big difference between saying "you never put the toilet seat down!" and "You're a lazy s o b who never puts the toilet seat down!" You have to keep an atmosphere of respect.

That does't mean it's always been hearts and flowers, either. There are times of discontent and probably even disinterest but you just work through it. It sounds cliché, but communication is key. And I'm an extrovert married to an engineer so it took a long time to get our communication on even keel. But the one tip I tell everyone is "You laugh, you last." You MUST keep a sense of humor about your marriage. That was one of the things that attracted me to my husband in the first place, which helps. Sometimes we start nitpicking about stuff and just stop midway through and laugh.

I'm not trying to sound preachy, because like I said, half is probably luck. We were engaged after 2-1/2 months so it could have gone either way. I think I was very lucky to have made a good choice! You'd have to ask my husband on his take of it :)

0

Korazy lady, I was a little conflicted as well. i was trying to pinpoint what Really bothered me, and your summary agreed with me. It sounds like what you might read from a quirky novel or short story. It didnt translate well onto screen. It was the best romantic comedy drama so far for me still.

Thank god for the Scholar Who Walks The Night finally seeing sense re: casting i.e. NOT casting a terrible actress as lead. See, sometimes the drama gods are kind and netizen comments are actually useful! (now please get Kim So-eun and Lee Yubi to sign on!)

Heard It Through The Grapevine: I know I fangirl every week, but this is shaping up to be to 2015 what Misaeng was to 2014 i.e. something completely different from your usual kdrama and quite possibly the best drama of the year. Though they are nothing like each other.

I loved this week's developments, because Bom is shaping up to be a true iron fist in a velvet glove, and the maneouvreing she did to solve the problem of her sister's one night stand humiliating her and both families, was worthy of Machiavelli himself. I loved the way it was handled - the direct callback to the judgement Bom herself faced as a pregnant teenager who married into one of Korea's most powerful families, and now her not wanting her sister to face that same judgement, but at the same time keeping her best facade of steel about it.

The girl will cry her eyes out over the unfair treatment of her sister, but then put in motion a plan that begins with an unveiled and sweetly delivered threat to a too-big-for-her-britches Secretary Lee. I love her (Go Ah-sung <3333). And I love how completely she's won the housekeeper over. We have over half the run left, I really hope this drama stays as awesome as it is.

Let's Eat 2: I confess, I went into this one with some apprehension, but I really love it. Sure, it's sad that Gu Dae-young broke up with Soo-kyung, but things like that do happen in real life too, and I love Seo Hyun-jin's character and her snappishness.

And oh GOD, the food! I'm all prepared to fall in love with Yoon Doo-joon again (seriously, SO HANDSOME. It shouldn't be allowed!) and to get fat. But who cares, food is delicious.

Angry Mom: Finally got as far as episode 6 of this, but this one is a keeper. That kid who plays Go Bok-dong is amazing.

Heard it through the grapevine: I keep seeing people talking about this show. Maybe I should put it on the list, but it seemed quite makjang/melo in the plot so I was hesitating

yeah, LE2 just started this Monday! It's definitely a good start imo, I expected I'd feel hung up on the no Soo-kyung factor but I like the new neighbourhood and neighbours a lot. There's even a cute dog just like in LE1, ha!

and Grapevine is the absolute opposite of a melo, don't let the posters and dim lighting fool you. It's one of the most poker-facedly hilarious shows ever.

on the jdrama front: finished a bunch of single-episoders last week, but my favourite was Ao to Shiro de Mizuiro, which is about a bullied girl trying to unpick the lock on the door to her school's rooftop. I love that it didn't get too exposition-y about the past, but focused on the present and stays with her character development rather than trying to shoehorn in a romance.

(and the temptation most have been strong, since the main male role in this went to a then-18-year-old Oguri Shun)

and speaking of Shun, I still haven't been able to finish Ouroboros because no subs. Which is a shame because it was getting interesting, I do feel very thankful to the lone subber doing this though!

i started ouroboros by just snooping around for something to watch and noticed that oguri shun is in it. i like it - hmmm, must put it on the backburner since you mentioned the lag in subs...

Oh yes I saw Ao to Shiro de Mizuiro recently. I liked the way they handled it and how the episode was done.

i am still way behind on Ouroboros, but if the subs are missing I might wait a little longer before picking it up again. But with only one subber it will take time since it is a lot of work. Thank you for your hard work subber!

I am eagerly waiting for the final episodes' subbing on Ouroboros as well along with Dakara Koya which I love. I can't say enough good things about DK. I can relate to the heroine because she is a woman in her 40's with a neglectful husband and two obnoxious sons who decides to escape from domesticity and live her own life. My husband is not neglectful and my two sons are rarely obnoxious but it's nice to see a drama that focuses on a mature woman's decision to stand up for herself, support herself and expand her horizons. I hope I get to finish both dramas.

HITTG is my Misaeng this year too (though I'm pulling for a successful Hong Sisters drama). The difference is I loved the first two episodes in Grapevine. Misaeng's first two depressed me and made me nearly stop watching (glad that I didn't). The succeeding episodes of both dramas however made me say, "Wow, daebak!" after each one. I'm a little regretful that I watched all 14 in one go and now have to wait 9 weeks for the remaining episodes.

And can we mention Han Yi Ji (In-sang's sister) because she's great too? I hope she'll get a storyline soon. It amazed me that those two parents were able to raise those two amazing chaebol kids. Kudos to the staff and minions, I guess.

Watched 2 new shows I've been anticipating:

Missing Noir M Awesome! The quality of it is superb. The first mystery was well done. It had some twists and kept me guessing. I'm glad Viki is subbing it, even though it's been at a slower pace than other shows. I hope more people check it out!!

Falling for Innocence The first episode didn't impress me, but the second episode was much better. I feel a little bad for Joon Hee and how he's been treated at the Hermia company. He's not a saint, but I really hope he ain't a murderer. I don't think the show will go there though........

got home (20:45pm now) and just wanted to say: "arrgggggh!".... but I can´t. I have a cold and my voice is gone.
which brings me to a thought I had that being sick looks a whole lot prettier in dramas than in real life. plus their voice is clear. it should be half gone or gone completely, you should be able to just hiss, also, when you sneeze so much blood clumps up inside your nostrils and the nose turns beet red and rough, and you can´t smell that goddamn porridge they make you or the tea they bring. and your eyes are swollen and have dark circles.
seeing a proper sick person would give me SO much evil satisfaction. bhahahaa serves you right (I am now only mean cause I am sick. I would take care of them and empathioze. really. especially if they are cute.)

CHURRRRRRRRR~~~~ (all you watching Smelly Girl, please tell me, was that not the best part of Smelly Girl this week lol)

Anyone going through a boring slump in their life. I don't mean dramas, just life in general. I know I shouldn't complain, living in a first world country, I have much to be thankful for, but I guess this is one of those "first world problems" - life is too calm for me. I guess I should give background, I am a young 20-something professional female who doesn't have a namja-jingu (all the single ladies put your hands up!). Playing the dating game (which by the way is no where close as awesome as kdramas #falsehopes) but I need something new and exciting and a man is just not cutting it!

Anyway, anyone in the same boat? What are you all doing that's interesting and fun? Any solo activity ideas!?

Solo activities? Would taking courses on Coursera (a massive online open course) count? They have come up with a mobile app, so I pick a course and listen to the online lecture videos while taking the transport to work. So my weekday waking hours are now spent on the online lessons, such that I have time in the weekends for only 1 drama - The Girl Who Sees Smells, haha.

Also i agree with redfox 's comments below that making others happy will enrich your life, so maybe you could consider community services as well.

It's been an impossibly busy year for me so far, and it's taking a toll on my body. (Yes, literally I mean.) I've visited different chiropractors and massage therapists 10+ times already, and now feel like I'm coming down with the flu.

Good thing is, I still unwind with dramas...

Finished Watching:

HEALER >> I did so enjoy this. PMY did spunky and heart so well here, that I've begun to see her in a whole new light. I once wrote on this website that I confuse her looks with Park Shin-Hye, but no longer. I think she's actually more expressive than PSH.

Now Watching:

Pinnochio >> I'm enjoying this, but I feel like I already know what will happen. I don't expect any surprises, so I've kinda slowed down my viewing of it because I've been totally hooked on....

Kill Me, Heal Me >> Gosh, this is SO GOOD so far! It's the first time I've watched either lead in anything, and now I'm totally going to check out their previous work. Ji Sung is such a versatile actor, and I find myself really really sold by his performances.

The female lead annoyed me at first with her excessive screaming, but she's also grown on me.. She's a great actress, too, and their chemistry is all that.

I'm so happy when I feel like I don't know what will happen in a drama. : )

Heard it through the Grapevine is such a well written and acted drama ,that it's going to my top 10 list. There are so many small nuances, to the show that sometimes I have to go back to replay to catch them. Casting and acting is excellent and I'm so enjoying what a great job the secondary actors are playing especially the staff. The In Laws are hysterical but in a sad ,dark way. This is a whole new depiction of the poor girl/chaebol family dynamics. In Sang was so perceptive when he talks about his first meeting with Bom and how initially he felt so sorry for her and then he realized that she actually ruled the whole high school debate group. i think we will see this happening in his family.
I wonder is the show doing well in Korea? Does anyone know whether the Korean producers or writers monitor the reactions of overseas fans? Seems like the shows that are great in Korea aren's as popular online and vice versa. Anyone know?

As far as I know, the rating is second to Shine or Go Crazy (which ends this week). I don't know next week but the contender is a 50-episode powerhouse Splendid Politics/Hwajong with Cha Seung-Won as the lead. But for the reception, HITTG does well so far. People who watch it love it.

Why does OT always come out when it's nighttime in my country? WAE? (because earth is like a ball yeah I know that but still... I'm always late into the party)

Anyway, drama updates:

HITTG: This week is less funny, more witty. Not that I'm complaining, but I like both funny and witty, so unconsciously I wait for the funny scenes. On the other note, who knows if the infamous crotch injury is actually REAL? Bless Yoo Joon-Sang for being a true gagman at heart.
It may be a strong contender for Misaeng in this year's Baeksang's best drama/best director/best screenplay, though I have a feeling Misaeng will still win big. But the director of HITTG directed SLA which got the award in two of those categories last year, so it's still a though choice.

Smelly Girl: Like it, though it still doesn't have a 'wow' factor, which is not a problem while the show still airs, but will be less sticky once it ends.

Nine: I know, I KNOW I'm 2 years late, but whatever. I found it under 'best drama' on dramabeans' year-end award (I just find this site last year) and now I'm on episode 8. So far I like it. The only thing (or one) that bothers me is the leading lady. Idk if it's the acting or the character, but I can't feel her. She's too childish for our hero, which is Lee Jin-Wook with his god-carved eyebrows. And her nose keeps distracting me LOL. Anyhow, I like the storyline. Don't give a spoiler.

Hello everyone!

I have been struggling trying to finish watching Angry Mom episode 6. It seems like it got real slow and boring all of a sudden. I am enjoying Girl Who Sees Smells a lot though. The main plot about the serial killer is not that interesting to me but the funny stuff is great. I have never seen Yoochun in a drama where he is animated funny. Even in Rooftop Prince, he always had that serious look. It was a nice surprise seeing him be all silly.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Pure gold was the scene where Jung Joon Young helped his girlfriend "search" for her earning with the "flashlight" - OH MY GOD, the background music in that scene, I almost spit out my coffee....

Grew up with Grisham novels but somehow, Punch reminds me of Police Story, The Town and all the mafia movies. The score is amazing..reminds me of Hans Zimmer. The villain is chilling. he is on my list of great kdrama villains that includes IHYV and Angry Mom baddies. Lastly..the male lead character is hottttt. There is something sexy about men who get the job DONE.

My sister loved that drama. I was afraid it would be too sad. I have decided that waiting until a drama is over and marathoning is the BEST way to watch it, although you miss the discussions. I try to stay away from spoilers about the endings, but I do want to know if it was at least satisfying. That way I can decide whether to invest the time. I was holding off on Shine or Go Crazy but based on what I've seen here, won't bother. Right now, IHITTG is the only current drama I'm watching, but I'm happily getting on the Healer train.

I am on episode 10. It IS a rather sad drama. Not only do I cry about the main lead and his daughter but I cried during other scenes between the other leads as well. MAYBE I won't be too angry about this ending (i accidentally read some comments) as long as most of the ride is satisfying. Some endings tend to fall flat but the downfall started halfway into the series. Crossing my fingers! Mirae's choice was a downer. I dropped it halfway and came back last few episodes and HATED the ending. Almost everyone did. Thinking about it now, I am now ok with how it ended. So the ending might not be the dealbreaker at times. Healer is one drama I am wondering whether it is overrrated.

Healer may very well be overrated. It's taken me a while to really get into it, but I'm glad I waited and am marathoning it. Surprisingly, it's not Ji Chang Wook that has me hooked, although he's good in it. I'm really loving Park Min Young's character. The couple does have a sweetness to it.

After 6 -7 years of steady drama watching, honestly, nothing is spectacular to me anymore. The first dramas I watched left such an impression on me that I was wowed. Now I keep saying I'm going to stop watching because it's very difficult to find a story line or character that hasn't been done in some way before. But still I watch, and am happy if I find one or two enjoyable. If not, they get dropped. There's no time for bad dramas!

0

Hello everyone. Super behind a lot of dramas that I started up because of work. On the other hand, I've hooked my brother onto kdramas. The first one was Liar Game which I thought would suit his boyish tastes more. He really loved that one; while I was rather indifferent towards Ha Woo Jin, he found the silent grumpy aura cool. But we both agree Kang Do Young is all sorts of amazeballs.

Then came King of Dramas. Bro currently ranks that as his #1 favorite drama, even more than Liar Game. I guess comedy is preferable. He is in love with Kim Myung Min and I approve. So now he's marathoning A New Leaf and loving every moment of it even though I dropped that one halfway (for dissociated reasons) and thought the heroine was a little annoying. He thinks she's cute, lol. I just happen to find her cuter in Healer.

I also made him watch School 2013. We both squeed like crazy over the epic bromance and the rest we fast-forwarded. I didn't think any guy would like bromance but he proved me wrong.

Now I'm looking for more dramas for him to watch. Preferably ones that are as much romance-free as possible, sort of like the ones I showed him already, with the focus more on other genres instead. I would much appreciate recommendations.

Better late than never I say.

Have spent the week alternately doing taxes, and injuring my back at work. Today I learned that Valium and tax preparation DO mix well. I think I'll save some back for next year.

Due to the issues mentioned above, I'm a little behind on my drama watching. IHITTG and Angry Mom are still good. And it sounds like I'll have to start watching Let's Eat 2. I did gain 14 lbs from eating while watching LE 1, so I'll have to be careful.

I had a patient from Korea this week who gave me her Kdrama recommendations. She really liked "What happened to my Family" so I may have to give it a try. It is primetime to get new plants and seeds in the garden though, so it may have to wait. Have a great week!

I used to watch a show after it is completed, checked the recap and DB comments after I've seen the entire show.

But my experience with Healer, having watched it while it was still running and sharing and squeeing with the DB community, was extremely amazing for me. Basically, I'm into rom-coms, not too heavy drama. Saeguks are ok. I watched EK for the love of Ji Chang Wook. Speaking of historical dramas, there's a Jdrama I super love, titled Gou. :)

I'll try Smelly Girl... Sounds interesting. :)

Late to the party again - the family & I went camping at the beach this weekend & just got home. :)

What I've Been Watching:

Missing Persons Noir: WOW. This show is tightly plotted, and the acting is amazing. Kim Kang Woo is fantastic - that scene where his eye twitched? Holy cow. I can't wait to see the new episode.

Blood: Well, it's somewhat better, though I noted with amusement the villain symbolically crushing the wine glass - I thought "well, the director must have been reading the fan boards". ::chuckle::

What I want to be Watching:

Let's Eat: I haven't managed to catch enough time to sit down with it. I'm looking forward to getting hungry. :)

The Scholar Walks at Night: Lee Jun Ki as a scholarly vampire? HECK YEAH.

K-drama Moment:

I was watching Blood, and there was a scene where the protagonist talks about coloring in a grown-up coloring book to clear his mind. The picture he turned to in it was so beautiful that I rewound to see if I could see the title. Alas, no.

Imagine my surprise two days later when a friend sent me a link to an NPR (National Public Radio - US) story about a woman who draws grown-up coloring books...and the photo that illustrated the link was the same one I saw on Blood! (Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/Enchanted-Forest-Inky-Quest-Coloring/dp/1780674880/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1428882075&sr=1-1&keywords=the+enchanted+forest+coloring+book)

So now I have a copy, and I've been coloring all weekend at the campsite. :)
