some thoughts.

I know people have recommended dramas like Date and some others in unison, but I just did not find them moving. well, just not interested in social statuses or marriage or pregnancies / babies.

ah, but I had a fantastic thought: what if there was a ballet version of Kill Me, heal Me? You know like there is a ballet version of Edward Scissorhands! I mean, the soundtrack is... Or what if they´d expand the soundtrack into more songs with lyrics, musical material? Not much into musicals though, the 12-year old me was but not any more. Or ice skating? A Kill Me, Heal Me Ice Show would be awesome, with elements from Beauty and the Beast? ahh, I am just curious how it would turn out. are there any dramas you think would work as a ballet or ice show? would it be possible? or a musical film!

and a weird, weird thing.... there was Tallinn Music Week last week and I had a free weekend, so I went to some concerts. One free City Stage concert was in Tallinn Art Hall. at first a local guitar virtuoso, then some electronic bullshit and then.... I had seen some musicians adjusting their instruments before and thought one was a guy and one was a girl. Nope. Two brothers. both had a beard. one had a bow-shaped hair pin though, and pink-ish-lilac clothes. that HAIR PIN. Instant Yo Na flashback. an actual guy wearing one on his own, without a personality disorder. I ... didn´t think I´d see that ever. and he had purple stockings.

but the way he sang... very unique. the band is called Sturle Dagsland. It really did feel like a feminine voice, reminded me of Björk and an estonian singer Iiris. But then he made these SOUNDS.... so I thought: "Nope, no Yo Na in him whatsoever." more like a forest fairy or a tree spirit...from the third sex. Like Puck from Summernights´Dream. But still, the PIN. BOW SHAPED. PINK:

ah, I couldn´t take a picture, hope to find one when they update the festival

and I know you are all tired of me talking about Kill Me Heal Me, but seriously, why are there no interviews with park Seo Joon? I was really looking forward to his after drama thoughts and there is none. Been waiting and searching....

also, probably the most important news is I found vegan ramen. Instant, made of buckwheat (udon? basically but INSTANT.) in the eco shop my mom works (aka right under my nose, dah!)

about the casting news: Lee Jun Ki, yay! Jin Se Yeon, please no!!!

and I sincerely apologize if I made some people miss Yo Na with my post again. But I encourage you to find signs of her in real life and you´ll feel much better!

And the color picture sharing link is here (not sure if I can do this, but I cannot find any other picture, sorry, author!!!!) :

I won´t but Girl Who sees Smells seems odd and interesting. Just started though. I guess I am more a member of Weirdness and Camp Club than "The serious and mature peoples´ club". But TGWSS also seems somewhat dark...

I liked the Smelly Girl premiere. From the writer of RTP I'm hoping for light and funny with an occasional detour into necessary darkness.
I've already decided Angry Mom isn't my genre. If I want to think about Korean bullying and student suicide rates, I'll read the news and get depressed that way.

like someone pointed out in the Soompi article comments, most often a cold jerk in real life is just what it is or worse, an abusive, chauvinist person with no respect nor empathy towards others. if love would really change them all into lambs, we wouldn´t have domestic violence refugee centers.

and as we have seen, nice guys come in a large variety, they are in fact all different. but the cold chaebols some... pretty much as clones.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree with all that. It's not just kdramas but a lot of rom-coms where there's a cold jerk whose changed by love and I think it really translates dangerously into real life. I'm all for nice guys and even guys with some personality flaws but too many of the leads have had pretty abusive tendencies.

0

I just watched the 'falling for innocence' and loved it. Watching another Cold jerk(Jung KyungHo) was fun. He looked so good (like in 'Cruel city').
That reminds me - these cool guys could be just cool in drama(like Kang HaNeul kept saying only his role was Intelligent guy in dramas in ''Running man' lol).
I remember Nam Gyu-ri mentioned his lack of experience when doing the bed scene in 'Cruel city'. Same goes with Chun JungMyung who Choi GangHee said she had to teach him doing the bed scene in the 'Heart to heart'. lol.
BTW FFI- Story is meh, but it is JTBC so I can't help but having some expectations. + great actors.

0

But it's no challenge and boring :-(

I seriously can´t see how it is boring? all these characters have received immense love from viewers. they obviously had something to offer.

0

Hmm.. The writers will have to be creative to put tension in other ways. Like Park Bong-soo having to protect his identity. Or Park Shi Hoo in Prosecutor Princess which I loved but can't rewatch now because of reasons...

Rooftop Prince also has nice lead. He wasn't a jerk so much as royalty who honestly thought there was a set rule of treating w/ commoners versus royalty. But even at the start, he was very nice to his Power Rangers and even in the sageuk portion, he was nice to his attendants.

SUFBB, Dream High, Misaeng, Hogu's Love, Let's Eat...

Or if show focuses on the women like Dalja's Spring or Witch's Romance. Having a perfect guy from the start wouldn't make the drama boring. (I almost forgot but Unkind Women has Song Jae Rim hehehehe~)

Come to think of it, there are lots of dramas that didn't focus on jerk Prince as trope and they still did okay! :D

0

oh and btw, mary, you Song Jae Rim is a nice, but cheeky guy, eh? I havent watched a lot of WGM, the format is way too strange for my cultural understanding. but it is kind of cute. I relate very much to his always cleaning up after cooking straight away. I am the same, I cannot stand to leave anything messy. he seems kind of a little OCD-nice, like Help-I-Can´t-Help-Being-Nice_While-Actually-XXX and it is hilarious.

do we have a nice-but-cheeky character among the nice guys? Um... can´t think of any right now. need one. some OCD compulsive-grudging niceness and orderly-ness plus an inner desire to be a bit naughty. in other words, a completely normal man.

Required fields are marked *

He is such a doofus and I'm still unsure what % is him vs what is scripted vs what is image packaged by his agency...

But I was also glad to see that wash-dishes-as-soon-as-you-can part. I do that too! Not because I'm OC about it. It's just... it makes the dishwashing pile look smaller and easier to tackle if you wash some stuff while the food is cooking.

That last bit, Park Seo-joon was cheeky in AWR, right? Puppy was sad when he got kicked out of bed in the middle of foreplay!

As for inner naughtiness, maybe that upcoming Super Virgin show will give us that?

0

Sung Joon in I Need Romance 3. Silly show, but I loved him and Kim So Yeon together. He spends a lot of time doing the dishes, and nobody does cheeky better. I was bummed when he showed up as a villain in HJM. There should be a law requiring Sung Joon to always play low-key, sexy musicians.

0

The girl who sees smells! The otp are a good match. The lead girl has only cooed once which is a relief since she cooed her way thru Blade Man. The show is enjoyable and I am looking forward to next week's episodes.

Happy Friday, everyone!

It's been a few weeks since I was on an OT -- mostly I've been busy, and kind of sporadic in my drama-watching. Now I'm back on schedule, and it's changing-of-dramas season! So this is me, saying goodbye to the old shows and starting new ones.

First, the shows that have ended:

Hyde, Jekyll, Me: I'm glad I finished this, though I did consider not doing so more than once. I liked it best when it was full of heart-rate-monitoring, hypnotizing, and kidnapping craziness, to be honest. I'm sad she never acknowledged her feelings for Seo Jin as himself, and I've decided one thing I strongly dislike for a drama to do to a character is stick him in jail and forget about him. It kind of felt like once Soo Hyun/Tae Joo was caught, the show's focus shifted sharply from Seo Jin to Robin, and I'm pretty sure that was around the time I really started having to make myself keep going. That said, I consistently liked the angle it took on Seo Jin and Robin's relationship. Ultimately, I enjoyed this one, gorillas and all.

Persevere, Gu Hae Ra: oh, Show, you will stay fondly in my memory for a long time; you who shattered my heart and stole the pieces. Such fantastic use of music, such endearing characters, such dauntless optimism despite constant and disheartening failures. You were never flawless, but you got to me at an emotional level that hasn't been reached in quite a while. Farewell, and keep singing.

Now, for the new:

Angry Mom: wow, this show is intense. Awesome, and full of intriguing characters, but really, really dark. Anxiously awaiting subs on this week's episodes.

In an effort to balance the heaviness of Angry Mom, I finally listened to my sister's urging and started Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo, and it's just the dose of cute I was hoping for. It's also a double helping of memories for me -- the Korean version was my very first Kdrama, and naturally everything related to Japan recalls my semester there last fall.

And, finally, Sensory Couple/Girl Who Sees Smells: I've only watched the first episode so far, but I think it'll be fun! I like the same name detail; I don't remember it being mentioned in descriptions, but it made things more interesting for me.

I'm also still watching Running Man, of course, and thought this week's episode was a blast. All three guests were fantastic as expected, and I always love it when everyone works together for a change.

My mom and I also finished You a From Another Star, much to her dismay. She wanted to turn right around and watch the whole thing again. Time hasn't permitted yet, but I think we've settled on The Princess's Man for our next drama together, since it's one I haven't seen yet, despite having been on my to-watch list for quite some time.

Okay, I think that's all for now. Have a great Easter weekend!

But I took too long to pick up TPM and now I just can't.

Just my personal preference as a viewer. I know others can separate the personal issues of actors while watching, but me? I'm like you. I need time. LOTS of it in his case.

And Good Friday to all.

Heard It Through the Grapevine is still entertaining and intriguing. I remember Bom's comment that she holds a grudge and I'm wondering if she is filing away all the slights and insults she and her family are enduring and will pay it back tenfold. Go Ah-sung is wonderful and a very talented actress and she fades into Seo Bom so well.

Three cheers for Go Ah-sung! I love how she brings to life a character who really doesn't rely on any of the usual kdrama markers of 'girl with a mind of her own' - Bom isn't particularly bubbly and is far from defiant or screechy, but I love that we're still able to get that sense of her will to remain her own person in that house.

I'm also really happy to hear she'll be working with Im Shi-wan in his next movie, though I will miss her in dramas. I hope she doesn't wait five years to do another drama!

<I’m also really happy to hear she’ll be working with Im Shi-wan in his next movie, though I will miss her in dramas.

Honestly, I think she can have a much bigger career in the film world than in dramas. She's got the talent and her looks aren't as cookie cutter pretty as dramas likes their heroines to be. (I think she's gorgeous of course.)

Required fields are marked *

She's better known as a movie actress anyway, Grapevine was her first drama since 2010. She's great in The Host, Snowpiercer, Elegant Lie, pretty much all the stuff I've ever seen her in.

and I do love her looks. There's an intelligence to her that seems to be missing from your standard one-note drama actress of the kind whose casting we like to lament. (and it doesn't take a genius to see there is a link between that intelligence and the ability to act....)

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

So True.
You can tell that she, the actress, is smart and thoughtful because she just disappears into her character. I also enjoyed her in The Host and Snowpiercer and she definitely does not have the cookie cutter looks of so many other actresses. And she is gorgeous.

0

Thank you! I knew I had seen her somewhere and it was Snowpiercer. She's so great in Grapevine -- but then the whole show is really good. It reminds me a lot of Misaeng in tone and realism and heart (not theme obviously).

0

I'm curious to see her in a ditzy role now.

I know dramaland is full of ditzy heroines, but I've only seen Go Ah-sung in two things. And she's always a strong and smart girl in it.

I'm curious if she can pull off a "dim" character with depth. Like how Kim Sung-ryung did that funny and pitiful mom in Heirs but then turns around and can be smoking hot, elegant, or intimidating in other projects.

0

I didn't realize she was that little kid in the Host.

YES! Finally a HITTG post! :)

This is probably the first time I've seen Go Ah Sung but I am loving her! (Late kdrama bloomer)

She has committed herself to Seo Bom very well, so is Lee Joon. I cannot unsee him as Han In Sang whenever he appears.

The last episode left me wondering with a few questions... Like, what exactly is that line she has to draw? And the scene with her and Secretary Lee was quite surprising because I've all along thought the help sides her and came to adore her... with that scene it might change? Can't wait for new episodes!! 32 episodes of such high quality drama is so worth my time!

xxvxx ~

That scene with Bom and Secretary Lee was gold. In Sang's Momma and Housekeeper ahjumma got to witness the Princess wield her authority. Someone always manages to see what goes on in that house. Creeping and sneaking always are for naught.

Secretary Lee did ask the housekeeper what weaknesses Bom might have. Tactless, already plotting a payback. Careful there Lee, you're treading on dangerous ground.

Secretary Lee was getting a tad bit too big for her britches. When she mentioned her sexual liaison in front of the other staff. Tsk tsk.

Projecting, I think Bom will be the one to help Min Joo-Young. An uproar will ensue if that turns out to be.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today.

Watched this week:

Kill Me, Heal Me - I'm half-way through it and it's fantastic! ....... Serious, funny and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Marriage Not Dating - Up to ep 7 on this. I'm loving everyone in this! ....... I see why the buzz about it, when it was airing, was so positive.

Last Cinderella - After hearing about this jdrama, here in OT, a while back, I finally started watching it. ....... All I know is, Chiyoko totally needs professional help.

Mr. Selfridge (Season 3) - Oh wow, I think things are going to get a little dark and intense this season. ....... Mr. Selfridge's new son-in-law pairing up with Lord Loxley? Nothing good can come of that. ....... Then again, son-in-law doesn't seem like he needs to pair up with anyone to cause problems.

Ok, that's about it for now. ....... For those of you who celebrate Easter, have a wonderful holiday on Sunday.

Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Hello all!

Blessed Good Friday to my fellow Christians! And blessed Passover to our Jewish friends! Tons of running around this holiday weekend.

As for dramas:

I went wild dropping stuff.

Dropped Unkind Women and Angry Mum. I was loving them so much but they each did one coincidence too many and something in me just revolted and shouted, "ENOUGH OF THIS!" I truly think coincidences can be lazy writing. And when Angry Mum's hubby turned out to be vicious might-be rapisr brother.... I thouught... "Okay, that's it. My patience is gone." And I was liking the show for the most part.

Also dropped Twinkle. I just will not find the quickie resolution of a 50 epi turned 26 epi drama satisfying. So why even hope?

Am now wtcghing Missing Noir M and Girl who sees Smells. And wow, am liking them a lot! Who knew I needed murder and procedurals?

Shine and Go Crazy is just so wonderfully heartbreaking. I'm in Sajeuk glory now. It does what sajeuk does best, echoing something wonderfully cosmic and otherworldly and deeply tragic. I feel wonderfully emotionally fed. Laughing at myself but wow!!!

Grapevine is perfection, classy, wonderful. Words fail me to describe how happy i see to see artful words, artful cinematography, artful acting... all all all perfection.

That's about it. Have a wonderful weekend, all.

I'm curious about Missing Noir M. The trailers just made me giggle (you know: "Harvard at age 10." right) but it looks unusual.

I love seeing your reports on which shows have too many coincidences. Since I don't have too much time right now, I've been trying to decide whether or not to watch "Angry Mom" and you might have given me a reason to tune in elsewhere. I'm intrigued by the premise for "Girl who Sees Smells."

And a blessed Easter to you!

I thought "Girl who smells" would be super ridiculous. Especially she's meeting a guy who doesn't feel. So when i saw the teasers there were eyerolls, titters, guffaws. But once one accepts the gimmick and the coincidence that hero has met the girl (heroine) who caused his sister to be murdered...everything flows. I like the OTP as a team, and their crime-solving is fun.

The heroine is likable, fun, and strong without being pushy. Her amnesia is acceptable...i guess because it's at the beginning of the episode. And her lost idea is acceptable also. Coincidence works better at the beginning of a story. When coincidence, amnesia, etc are a given at the outset, it's best. Rather than being used to help crappy writing.

Angry Mum is very good but the close calls insulted me. I hate the feeling that a writer is playing me and stringing me along just to get suspense. It offended me. If you tell yourself that some great cosmic force is using some fatal connection between the characters to work out some past inter-family issue. I almost want to have some conversation pop up about fate and how we must spiritually are connected to those who wound us and we (and our families) are tied to them until stuff is worked out. I know they don't have to SAY all that but it would help with all that coincidence.

The hero in Missing Noir M is pretty refreshing. He's humble, kind, and smart. The (current) villain played by Kang Haneul is such a creepy smug insecure smug self-satisfied jerk. He so wants to impress/be seen as equal to/befriend the hero. Like the kid in school who so wants to impress.

Thanks for the holiday wishes!

Happy April Beanies!! My mom was back in the hospital this week (for unrelated reasons to why she was in before) so I’m deciding March was a terrible month and this month is going to balance it out with nothing but goodness! Lately I can’t seem to finish shows I’m enjoying because I’m so worried that the ending will kill it for me. I still haven’t touched the last two episodes of Kill Me, Heal Me and now I can’t bring myself to finish HoGu’s love. So instead I’ve been watching:

Sensory Couple This started out much darker than I was expecting, but I guess intros are often a little out of character. I’m liking this so far. It’s pretty cute but I hope it surprises me a little more in the future. I know it’s just establishing the premise right now, but I also feel like I can guess a lot of upcoming things. So…surprise me show! I was hoping this would be recapped though – there are things I want to talk about already!

Murphy’s Law of Love I randomly threw in a Taiwanese show because I clearly don’t have enough Korean shows. I’ve only watched the first episode but it too is cute. Maybe this is just a “cute” time of year for me. I actually thought the premise would be even more clichéd than it is. His reason for getting into the ‘divorce business’ are actually a lot less bitter than I thought they would be. I’m not familiar with anyone in this show but I’ll probably stick with it.

Running Man Extra cheers for the cast this week!! I was annoyed with the end but I don’t even care. My beloved Kang Ha Neul plus Kim Woo Bin? You might as well have made it just for me. And actually I like Junho too so….part all around. It got a lot of laughs out of me too.

Unkind Women I’m an episode behind but still really enjoying it. It’s the show I didn’t know I wanted. It’s not nearly as dark as I thought it would be when I started and the cast is fantastic. And the teacher pushes all my buttons. She’s slightly exaggerated but also so believable. She’s all the things I really dislike in people. Also, how cute that those two are brothers? This show has way too many coincidences but I don’t care because this show is really about regular people and their interactions with each other instead of plot. At least for me it is.

And I'm way behind in Blood and SOGC so I'll need to marathon those at some point. I also meant to start watching Angry Mom but never made it past episode one - worth it? Aaand I will watch Missing Noir M as soon as it's fully subbed on Viki. Kang Ha Neul for the win.

I really liked the reality of unkind women. All the women in that family not sharing their hearts with each other but with strangers. I so wanted to see what would happen with depressed teenager. I totally loved the easiness of the romance...jus normal dating. But..... yeah...the coincidences!

That's why I am only watching Unkind Women for the reasons you stated, Carole. I'm actually kinda ok with the all the dang coincidences and the almost-run ins...so you can imagine I was relieved that ep12 just was like an open book, in regards to Not Dead Dad. As for the reveal of Teacher biatch last week, that was a bit I'd been waiting for weeks (at least Ma-ri knows now...although I think it'll knock her back a step when she learns that Doo-jin & Ru-oh are bros.) The almost run-ins with Not Dead Dad was getting a bit annoying.

And tell me about it...I absolutely HATE Not Dead __ tropes being used in kdramas!! I'm actually ignoring that abhorrence here just for Unkind Women, only because I like the refreshingness of the women being written like real life ladies, flaws and all. The amazing cast also is another plus...I think only Kim Hye-ja can do the "I'm being nice but also throwing shade your way" so naturally, ha.

I was actually watching The Legendary Witches a while back only to see if the ladies would get their revenge on the Ma family...yeah, actually watched this despite it being written by the AHYI writer. It was actually an ok watch -- ended up watching more for Kim Su-mi's character than poor ol' heroine -- until they decided to drop in Not Dead heroine's hubby. GOOD GOSH. I dropped it in a hot minute...didn't tune back in. Saw the finale a few weeks back,

I know they're not all the popular choices but I try to do sites that legally obtain rights to the shows which I think are Viki, Dramafever, Soompi. They also all have phone apps.

I just wanted to add my strong support for the sites that have legal rights to show dramas. (Viki, Dramafever and Soompi are the big ones, and Netflix and Hulu have older dramas as well.)

Since many viewers don't care whether they're watching at a legal or illegal site, here are reasons to watch at a legal site:

1) some (not all) illegal sites install malware and spybots on your computer, and these are a complete pain to clean up

2) watching illegal sites is stealing money and credit from the actors, writers and directors.

Some hackers like to say "content wants to be free." I say maybe content wants to be free, but actors and writers need to pay rent.

Because there are now 3 sites with legal rights to stream K-dramas, there aren't many situations to justify going pirate. If you disapprove of Drama Fever, there are Soompi and Viki, and vice versa.

I admit I often watch Korean films on pirate channels because no one makes them available overseas. (Yeah, I'm still waiting for "Frozen Flower" to open at the local multiplex! Hee hee.) But for dramas, going legal is one way to be a responsible fan.

Some of us care, but unfortunately legal sites are regionally very restricted and if you are outside of North America you are pretty much out of luck, in particular for most dramas.

I never watch films on these sites that I know are getting a release, even when they are available months before the release. I even bought a multi-region DVD player so I could buy DVDs released only in Asia (with English subtitles) or the US too. In fact I've got films with German and Dutch subtitles, because they had no English release but had one in those regions.

Global licensing needs to happen – and not with months (or years) in between different countries. There'll always be people who won't pay, but some of us will if you give us the option.

+1 on this

All streaming sites hate my region. Lots of dramas are unavailable for me and yet we are charged the same monthly fees. Not to mention the purchasing power of $5 in my country is much larger than $5 from regions with lots of licensed dramas like US. (ie $5 is just a snack to those regions while here it can feed a poor family of four for 2-3 days, and yet we only have half or a third or less of dramas available to others)

I'm a bit hurt when people assume that all pirates are cheapass customers who want everything free. I don't mind paying for things. It's when the licensing is messed up and unfair that I go somewhere else.

I've been waiting for years for some streaming site to serve my country. But everytime a new one comes up promising "more drama choices", it only offers those "more choices" to the same old regions.

Well, I dunno how licensing works. Maybe my local tv stations are to blame for monopolizing licenses. Meanwhile I'll bring my money somewhere else. Like a membership in torrent site which will at least give me the same # of shows as streaming sites, even if it's a bit more expensive.

TL;DR If you are in one of those golden regions that have all dramas available, then lucky you, and thanks for using legal streaming sites. But FYI, #notallpirates

0

Sorry! I didn't mean to give the impression that I'm accusing anyone. The regional licensing problems are massive. I know they make a lot of things off limits, if the legal sites even operate in your region.

As I say, I do watch movies on pirate sites because zero Korean movies come to Washington, DC (except one or two at the international film festival). And I've scoured legal sites and found almost no films. I do believe in using pirates for things I can't watch otherwise.

I'm just sensitive because I come across many Americans who think it's their right to get stuff for free--despite having all the great opportunities you've pointed out.

I just had an argument with my best friend about this. She's been my best friend for thirty years, and I was shocked to learn she doesn't believe in paying for the media things I routinely pay for. She says "someone else will pay for it" and thinks I'm naive and idealistic for contributing my share. And that's a common belief that makes it really hard to earn a living in the arts.

I can't believe in some regions sites charge the same membership fees for half the shows--that's highway robbery. Especially given the radically varying value of the dollar.

Please don't take any offense at my pro-copyright fervor! I'm grateful that I have lots of options in North America.

0

I guess it is partly also to protect local TV market and producing. some regions could make a request to the site to limit the availability. but for example, that doesnt mean I will watch local shows. most of ours are somewhat like the weekend dramas in Korea. too long and lots of melo, or then made for the 14-17 year olds

0

@Odessa, sokay. :D thanks for clearing that up~

My country is even more notorious for pirating things. It also annoys me esp when I see friends who can definitely pay for something not doing it, and then spending $10 a day on coffee. Bleh.

Sometimes I wonder if that's also the reason no one wants to open a subscription-based business here. Maybe they know there's not much market for it. (That and the very crappy internet speed with capping.)

0

I use legal sites to stream as well, purely because as far as I know the illegal sites don't have anything the legal ones don't, so why not use the legal ones? But in fact actors, directors and writers are usually contracted for a certain amount - it is work for hire, and they don't receive royalties. So the copyright holder might get less money if you use illegal sites, but the actors, writers and directors are paid the same regardless. Actually, since we don't know what kind of license agreements the legal sites have with the rightsholders, they also might just pay a flat fee for the license, in which case the only way using illegal sites would hurt anybody is in a very roundabout way, by decreasing the views (and therefore the revenue stream) on the legal sites and making them less able to pay for licenses. Seeing as how the legal sites are the ones that do the subbing, we are the ones who would lose out if they stopped making money and paying for licenses, so I think that is a better argument in favor of using the legal sites.

That's why I listed those three (I forgot about Hulu and Netflix even though I have access to them). I know not everybody can get shows in their areas and I even have had some shows I've had to find elsewhere....I will be forever grateful to darksmurfsub for subtitling Bad Guys which was absolutely nowhere. But I figure when you can use legal sites then do. I do wish they got more movies though. Le sigh.

0

That would be all well and good, I agree. And I do try my best to get it legal. But unless you're from the West or the Middle East, all the sites you just mentioned ie Viki, Dramafever, Soompi, are all unavailable. There's practically no way to get access, believe me, I've tried, to the point where I refrained from drama-watching for a while. I guess it's easier to say though, when you do have access.

For me, I mostly stick to myasiantv and cut down my dramas to maybe one or two a month. That, or I wait for the drama to appear on a local channel (luckily, taiwan/hk/kdramas are a staple here, so not so deprived). It normally takes maybe three years though, and I hope you understand I'm not really willing to wait that long.

Holidays and work travel really took me away from Dramaland just getting back into things over the long bank/Easter holiday weekend we have here. I managed to finish Ho Gu's Love, the show had its flaws and actually if you think about it didn't have that much plot. But I LOVED it, the feelings of love turning to love for me was when we found out Ho Gu was Do He's first love as well. SO glad I picked up the show. Now I am catching up on Angry Mom, which so far is pretty good. Also watched Girl who sees smells and it may be a bit early but I think this one may be a winner. The comedy is so spot on. I was ROTF laughing. I am finally getting back into period drama's and I have to say, am tally into the new BBC production of Poldark, I do have to fan myself while watching am definitely on the Aiden Turner fan bandwagon.

ooh OT at last! Time to recover from this week's massive casting stinker, here's the good stuff:

Heard It Through The Grapevine - I keep saying this, but I have never seen any kdrama like this before. I'm really loving (by which I mean I find it absolutely HILARIOUS) the way In-sang's dad speaks as if he's delivering royal edicts in a sageuk......and he really does behave like a Joseon king in modern clothes. Which fits, considering that even their house is a reconstructed traditional home in a modern shell and he has all the usual Joseon hangups about class (the attempt at 'elevating' Bom's family to artist status) and propriety. Of course this is all undermined by the way he and Mom are basically petty children at heart (as is everyone in their friend circle, Secretary Lee had it right when she said the ladies were like children when they fought lol, we even got hair-pulling this week!).

And it's really interesting to see Bom and In-sang as a comparision, since they're far more mature than his parents despite outward appearances. I'd predicted that the parents would try to distance Bom from her family while accepting her as their daughter-in-law, and that's exactly what they are trying here. But she's no pushover. Talk about an anti-Candy if there ever was one!

Girl Who Sees Smells - I tried episode 1, and while I liked way more elements of it than I ever did of HJM (the smell visualisations are so pretty!), I do hope they don't continue with our heroine's comedy troupe audition theme as a running gag for much longer. I don't want a repeat of Hyde's fail with its circus setting, dramas really shouldn't dabble in that sort of thing unless they can set it up properly. Shin Se-kyung's better at the dramatic stuff than the comedic stuff, but I like her and Yoochun together well enough. And he's solid as usual, not bad at all.

Ouroboros - just finished episode 8, and ooooh, I did NOT see that twist coming, re: kids at Mahoroba and where they ended up! But I am liking the increasing divide between our central duo, and the way it's playing out - Ikuo's open reluctance to hurt his partner by killing her father vs Tatsuya's insistence that they HAVE to kill the people responsible for Yuiko's death. I prefer it when the moral stakes are a bit muddy, versus the clean-cut avenge-the-good-teacher story this started out as. And I like that Mizuki genuinely has a role to play in this, as more than just an accessory. I like the way she and Ikuo work together, and the idea that for Ikuo, there might finally be someone in his current life whose trust he values and for whose sake he'd like to stop living totally in the past. Especially when you compare it to the spiral Tatsuya is on.

Also, happy Easter in advance to all who celebrate! I bought an obscene quantity of chocolate to store for this weekend - chocolate of assorted sizes, shapes and (heh) nationalites.

Unfortunately, I had to get rid of the Hershey's chocolate portion of that stash away because it tasted weird to me, like it was made with curdled milk or something. I'd never had it before and bought it from a local imported chocolate store, it was properly stored and not expired or anything. Lesson to self; do not buy large amounts of chocolate of a type you have never tasted before.

korfan - don't worry, I just gave it to the kids next door. Apparently the taste issues are a result of our tongues not being used to the result of American milk chocolate production methods (I got curious enough to look this up and found I was not alone in finding them foul).

I was particularly glad to get rid of the Hershey's Kisses. Someone online described them as looking like tiny individually wrapped dog poops, and I could not unsee that image. They didn't taste too good either.

But the rest of my chocolate stash is excellent! I'm chomping my way through a Frey milk chocolate bar with hazelnuts as we type, and it is delicious, very hazelnutty and creamy.

So true about there being variations in chocolate taste preference around the world.

Just last week there was an online news item about this where British and American citizens were asked about Hershey's and Cadbury chocolate. Their responses were interesting.

Great. ..... Now I want to have a piece of chocolate!

0

Sorry about the Hershey's! We shouldn't export it, or if we do, we should put a warning on it that it tastes nothing like actual chocolate. Even though I grew up on it (Hershey, Pennsylvania is only one state away), after I spent some time in Europe and tasted real chocolate, I couldn't bear Hershey's. I didn't realize Hershey's is made differently, but it definitely tastes like chalk.

Unfortunately, we're suddenly having a Cadbury's embargo here in the States. Hershey's has pulled some legal maneuvers to make it almost impossible to sell Cadbury's. I RAN to the grocery store as soon as I heard the news, but all the Cadbury's was already gone and I haven't had any since.

I'm envying you living somewhere with proper chocolate! Have the best of Easters!

It's not even a question of us seeing them working, it's more like....if your heroine works at a circus, at least make the circus-ing part of the drama not look completely lame. Or if she's doing a comedy routine, make sure it doesn't look a half-arsed waste of screen time.

This is never a problem with the usual professions - cops, lawyers, detectives, teachers etc usually get at least a believable bare-bones portrayal of their work. Or reporters, like in Pinocchio, that felt like a genuine setting and not just a throwaway. It's the 'fancier' professions, for lack of a better world, that suffer this problem.

This is the week that most of the shows I watched came to an end.

Out of Hyde Jekyll Me, Persevere Goo Hae-ra, Maids and Ho-gu's Love, I'm most satisfied with Ho-gu's! The show really consistently made me laugh and tear- all the way to the end, one that I enjoyed the most in a long time. Squid Ho-gu is gonna stay with me for long!

I'm quite disappointed with Maids though, I was expecting it to be better but the ending left me feeling a bit cold. I guess until the end the 2 main leads didn't really have chemistry together, I couldn't feel them.

Oh well, time to start new dramas!

Very disappointing ending for Maids. From a great start exposing the private domestic lives of Joseon women, both mistress and slave, it devolved into a dull spectacle of mostly men tromping back and forth doing What? Oh Ji-ho, despite his limitations as an actor, is one of my favourites and I am very excited that a second season of Ghost Seeing Detective is in the works. But he had no chemistry with the leading lady at all and was embarrassingly wooden throughout but as long as the focus was kept on women and their lives, it was forgivable. Great start miserable conclusion.

Please make Sensory Couple/ The girl who see smells.
I think Park Yoo Chun and Shin Se Kyung will make a great couple. I don't expect anything from the plot. I think it'll just be a romantic comedy drama but i still have hopes. It's unique and the super power thing. I remember Blade Man, Lee Dong Wook has the power now She has.
LOVING Angry Mom. It's my type of drama. Bad Ass girl who can fight. Korean Dramas this day is usually lead girl cries and cries. Love angry mom, Bad Ass Mom. Good Plot and i'm expecting something from it.

Angry Mom- I love it, still waiting on viki so I haven't seen this weeks episodes yet but still I love it.

Superdaddy Yeol- I may be the only one, but I love this too.

Ho-gu's Love- Why did you have to wait till the last half of your last episode to give us your best? Also maybe I just didn't get it but I don't think you ever really explained the significance of the dead girl, certainly not why Do-hee kept seeing her ghost in episode 15.

Unkind Women- I never got around to watching last weeks episodes and I still have no desire to continue, I guess I've dropped it.

Sensory Couple- Did anyone else enjoy the opening week as much as I did, I loved it. I'm never sure with Shin Se-kyung, as she's a weird kind of pretty where when I'm not looking at her I wouldn't put her in my top 10 most attractive actresses, but when she's on my screen my brain turns off and I just stare at her going look at the pretty, however I think this is another step forward for her after Blade Man. Of course we're only two episodes in so I guess it's too early to really tell for sure.
I'm not sure why they cast Kim So-hyun to play Moo-gak's sister they could have gone to the shoot and asked some random girl off the streets if she wanted to be on tv for a total of 10 seconds across the first 2 episodes.
Did they really tell us who in the killer is in the first episode, where's your sense of suspense, that may be the only knock against the show I have the first week.

If she was seeing a ghost, she should have seen much earlier – but this drama insisted on keeping everything secret until the last minute (hence the ghost first was presented as 'baby daddy', 'not baby daddy but male friend' and only then 'female friend from high school'!). I think the writers need to remember that you can create tension even when you let viewers in on things, just keep the characters in the dark.

I tried watching Reply 1994 but I couldn't. I don't know, the actors are really good but I decided to drop it because I didn't think it's interesting. Probably because I know who wins in the end. Some months ago I also dropped It's Okay, That's Love. With that, I noticed that mature dramas are not my thing too, like someone said in a previous comment.

I'm currently trying to find something short to watch (10-16 episodes), since I have a lot of college related things to do. Or maybe something longer (20 episodes) that is currently on going.

I hope anybody thinks that I dropped all the dramas I tried to watch. Definitely not! I started watching dramas a little more than a year ago and have seen a lot of things with quality, like School 2013, White Christmas, Gap Dong and my ultimate favorite, Misaeng.

Yes, maybe I don't like dramas in which romance is the main point in the story, which makes difficult to find something to watch, from what I have already seen.

If you don't mind a longer drama that isn't romance-centric, I strongly recommend Heard It Through The Grapevine. Its hilarity comes from the utter poker-faced self-awareness of its own absurdity, it's great.

Also not romance-centric, is Punch. I haven't finished it but it's doing a great job at suspense and making me want to drown all our villain/s while also regretting that they're so bad.

Shorter dramas with non-romance focus - I recommend Bad Guys, School 2013 (this one is bromance-centric though), Liar Game...all solid.

Bad Guys is awesome! I watched it some months ago. I loved School 2013 too.

I'm curious about Heard It Through The Grapevine, but it will have 32 episodes, right? I don't know if I will be able to watch in the original broadcast (probably not) but it's nice to see that people are liking a drama with Lee Joon. I just saw him in Gap Dong, but amazing acting.

Liar Game seems to be a favorite in here!

yeah, 32 episodes. It seems daunting, but it's worth it to me. And Lee Joon could not be more different from what he was in Gap-dong!

The Queen's Classroom & Evasive Inquiry Agency are two other excellent non-romance centered dramas.

oh, and have you seen Shut Up Flower Boy Band? 16 episodes, non-romance centric (friendship-centric if anything) and one of the best dramas ever.

Two Weeks - Lee Jun-ki in action hero mode, virtually no romance, but there is the most adorable little girl ever. Give it a try sometime.

Do you want to stick to kdramas or are you willing to try jdoramas? They are shorter. :) Around 10-12 eps.

If you want light, short kdramas, try:
- Sweden Laundry
- Let's Eat Season 1 (perfect bec Season 2 is just about to start)
- Nail Shop Paris --> because I just have to induct you into the Song Jae Rim Fanclub

And this one is old, but My Girl by the Hong Sisters is a laugh-fest with great chemistry + acting from the OTP.

I still think it's better at making you laugh AND cry than their new, more popular shows (Master's Sun, Gumiho, Best Love...) though I rarely find someone willing to try such an old show, so I don't usually talk about it. But it seems right up your alley so try it if you can still find where to watch. :D

Yes, maybe I don’t like dramas in which romance is the main point in the story, which makes difficult to find something to watch, from what I have already seen.

Two Weeks is fantastic - well-plotted & acted thriller about a guy falsely accused of murder. Main character is a wastrel, redeemed by the love of his daughter.

Bad Guys - More redemption, as murderers are given a second chance. Bad guys work w/the police to catch really bad guys.

Misaeng - an office drama about a kid and his first corporate job. SO AMAZING. No romance.

Marriage, not Dating: Ok, this one's a rom-com. But it is Hi-lariously funny.

Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Young - A detective who can see ghosts teams up w/the ghost of a murdered high schooler who is stuck inside the police station. Together, they solve crimes! (This one has 10 eps)

also, if you are not into the romance thing, try a few japanese dramas or films. What was the one about a male gymnast team? a bit too much pathos at spots but in general pretty ...different. and Otomen, and Nobuta... well there is a LITTLE romance but it is not dominant.
and even though there is romance in Kill Me Heal Me, i can´t NOT recommend it if you haven´t. Cause those alters are ones you HAVE to meet. you´ll get 7+ great friends.. AND THEN THEY´LL ALL LEAVE WAAAAAEEEE ok I am good. I´m all good phfff

ah, I would also add Unstoppable High Kick, it is not a short drama, but believe me, that won´t matter. mostly comedy, although there are love interests, but it also leads to comedic moments, so....

the same with Full House Take 2. Not actually a short drama but the episodes are short! only 30 minute episodes. and although with romance, silly, but with some surprising depth here and there. if you dont have an hour to spend, but want to watch one full ep of something, it is a good option

I was thinking hardly no romance... Its quite tough with kdramas. You can try,
1. Story of a Man (JB and GF are also great fans of this one)
3. Nine time travels... (This one is fantastic, romance is at a minimum, although its an important aspect)
4. The Chaser (I think the writer is same as Punch)
5. Empire of gold (is not everyone's cup of tea though)
Some of the others which were already suggested, I would suggest you to pick up Liar Game 12 episodes of awesomeness. There are some musical type shows which doesn't focus on romance, Dream High, Goo Hae Ra, What's up?(I didn't watch this personally though)

Hi DBers,
I missed the Open Thread the past few weeks. Even my drama viewing has taken a backseat to life. Guess I'm

Watching:
The Girl Who Sees Smells--Wow. More intense than I expected. In episode 2 I was actually scared, knowing what would be happening. As a cop show, it's reminds me of Grandpas Investigation Team. Already know who the bad guy is, but it's still interesting to see how the characters figure out how to catch him.

Superdaddy Yeul--Watching because I like the acting. Plot, not so much. All the sexual tension and imaginings are pretty racey. Do we have to wait until Episode 12 for them to get together? I want more happy and less fighting.

Secret Garden--For the ninth time. Not skipping anything either. I made myself wait more than a year to rewatch it. The cinematography is spectacular. And the OST is great too. I had forgotten about the songs. I always see Gi Li Rim as an alley cat who Jon Woo tames for himself. That makes me understand the scenes that make me uncomfortable--like when he body hugs her against her will.

When I watched it before, I watched it on Netflix, so no comments. Now on Viki, I'm just amazed at the comments. Viewers are not aware that Secret Garden came BEFORE I Hear Your Voice and Pinocchio. Oh, and that the actor are playing a character.

Finished subbing Grandpas Investigation Team. That took forever. It was filled with cop slang, so it was hard. Just started The Man Who Couldn't Get Married. I thought it was a cute drama.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!

Date I just wanted to say thanks to all the people that have talking about it for the last OTs, I hesitated because Japanese humor is sometimes a mystery to me, but I've seen the first 3 eps and I'm really liking this. The pace is fast and the OTP is very natural, good actors playing interesting characters. :)

Unkind Women I thought it was going to be a soapish story with a boring family of nice women pretending to be temperamental but I'm really liking this. It IS soapish but all four main women seem real to me, I love the grandma. It's so refreshing to find a good cast once again, I've been so disappointed by the main actresses of my latest dramas that this really is a good change. I know Ha-na is not as strong as the others but I find her so pretty, maybe I have a girl crush on her.:) I know this show has way too many coincidences but they are not insulting me yet. :)

Angry Mom I'm also surprised to be liking this. Bullying is a touchy subject for me but so far I'm intrigued and liking all the cast too. It also has too many coincidences but I'll try to forgive them.

HJM I'm so glad it's over, what a mess. Robin was a bore, the mystery was handled badly, the cast was pretty bad. I used to think Hang Ji Min was ok but she spent this whole show with the same expression. Huyn Bin did fine but he had only so much to work with, the guy deserved better!

Superdaddy YeolI don't know where this show is going, I'm still on ep 3 so I don't know if it's a keeper.

Hello fellow Dramabeans commenters!

Thanks for helpful advice from a few OT back I've recently started watching 2 new kdramas. One of these dramas being Empress Ki.

Now as a veteran drama viewer (lol), I know that some times (or all the time) dramas can be huge inaccurate and fictional. Some times dramas would mentions things I've never heard or seen before and I like to go and do my research to find out whether the mentioned is in fact true or not, I see it as an alternative way of educating myself. You can never stop learning.

Two questions have risen whilst I've been watching Empress Ki and I was wondering if anyone would be able to answer because I have had much luck so far, or maybe I'm not searching correct terms in Google. Granted I also haven't quite finished the drama yet so these questions may be answered later down the track, I'm not sure. (No spoilers please if this is the case!)

1. When Nyang gives herself to Ta Hwan, she has already previously given birth to another child. In a time where a women's virginity is as important as her life isn't it seen as a traitorous act as the emperor's consort to not be "pure" for just the emperor? How can Ta Hwan NOT know she wasn't a virgin. Now in modern times, there are surgeries in mend your hymen so you'll can appear to be a virgin, but what can they do back then in ancient times?

2. Jok Ho, the former emperor's eunuch has been hiding the whole time under a disguise consisting of a mustache and beard. It is stated in the drama that eunuchs cannot grow hair, I'm assuming due to lack of testosterone from being castrated. This was a fan conversation I had with my dad and he brings up a good point: women can get beards too.

I apologize if the questions are inappropriate.

On to other things now.
I'm currently enjoying a week long break from university so I decided to wind down and start on Kill Me, Heal Me and I have 6 words: OH.MY.GOD. SO.FREAKING.GOOD.

Took me a few episodes to really get into it, I was actually pretty close to dismissing the drama due to the first few eps due to what I like to dub as "awkward America stage" that we often find in kdramas. Seems like anything American related in kdramas involves awkward acting and awkward english dialog. And also Hwang Jung Eum's constant screaming.

I am now on ep 16 and getting onto the meatier end of things but I just love how the drama can so seamlessly go from piss-your-pant funny to dark and serious without it ever feeling unnatural or jarring. I cannot sing enough praises for Ji Sung and also Hwang Jung Eum's acting especially Ji Sung.

So far, 2015 has been fantastic to me in terms of dramas. Hope this keeps up!

Oh why, why, did you even start "Empress Qi"? I didn't even recommend that trash to my mom, since it was just a fashion show that glorified the traitors of Korea and made no sense at all.

In response to your questions...

1) I believe her name in the drama is Seung-nyang. In regards to this question the writer was just on Smile Dip. Plus, she's a tribute to Yuan, so it wouldn't even matter if she was still a virgin or not, her captors could've raped her on the way and say she's still a virgin...

2) It's obvious; the former emperor (I'm going to assume it's Rincinbal)'s eunuch had donned an elaborate disguise consisting fake facial hair. Like I said, the writers were on crack; even overlooking small details like that.

I suggest you drop the drama, since it would do you no good, and suggesting you watch "Jeong Do-jeon", "Jingbirok", & "Shin Don", which are proper sageuks than the trash you are watching.

Wow. Someone actually "hate" Empress Ki. Thanks. I thought I was the only one. It's kinda lonely being the minority. haha. Fans can ignore this rant. That drama was utterly ridiculous I just couldn't understand the hype. I kept going one more episode just to make sure I REALLY didn't miss out on anything good since everyone else seemed to highly recommended it. But eventually I just gave up. Enough was enough. *sigh*

You're wrong, I really really hate, hate "Empress Qi". (I'm calling the drama by how Ki is spelled in Mandarin, hate me here's my ㅗ ㅗ to you)
Nonwithstanding it even won a Daesang (but then again, "Brain" was so brain-dead it even bagged Shin Ha-gyun a Daesang...).

I love Ha Ji-won (d/t "Hwang Jin-i"), Ji Chang-wook (d/t "Smile Dong-hae" & Younha's "Broke Up Today" MV), & Joo Jin-mo (...I dunno?), and maybe even became Baek Jin-hee's 1st adult role, but seriously...
-traitors to Goryeo (minus Ki Cheol)
-fashion show
-supposed "Mongolians" speaking Korean and the setting of a suspiciously similar-looking Forbidden City in what should be Khanbaliq
-mindless writing & plot

I have had enough of that trash.

"Empress Qi" (and maybe even "The Heirs") just got in the hype due to ratings. But content-wise, as said in "Unkind Ladies" (and I quote Sohn Chang-min), "it's trash meant to be thrown in the bin".

From what I'm aware, the writers took immense liberties with the story...to the point of fictionalization. I actually watched it all only to see what would happen to the characters, but I always kept that in the back of my mind and couldn't really enjoy it as a "true" sageuk.

It's hard to find a good sageuk these days...especially one centered around a female, imo. Back in the day, I saw Empress Cheonchu (starring Chae Si-ra) but that too was fictionalized...which I realized after the fact.

But I do have to second the recommendation of Jeong Do-jeon because I heard that it was pretty good --no firsthand knowledge though because I didn't get around to catching it, with the pile of schoolwork. You are better off watching the real life-based sageuks from back in the day.

Beautiful weather here. Cherry trees are in bloom.

Heard It Through The Grapevine: What a delightful show. It gets juicer week by week.

Bom is quickly evolving from "Little Miss" to "Princess" . The house staff predict she'll become "Queen" and eclipse In Sang's mother.

Love the plot and cast. Ko Ah-Sung is fantastic as Bom.

Looking forward to the new dramas.

Oh! I forgot it was Friday! Hope you're all having a beautiful day. :) It's sunny and warm here, and as I'm off early, I'll be enjoying it.

What I'm Watching This Week:

Blood: I think it might be marginally improving, actually, though the ratio of stupid-slo-mo & sitting villains to actual story is still woefully out of balance. Kwon Hyun Sang had some lines & some fighty-fight this week, so maybe that's just the afterglow talking. ;)

The weird thing is that I loved the coloring book that was featured, but didn't catch the title...except the artist was on NPR this week! So now I have the title, and every bookstore everywhere is sold out. ::sigh::

Missing Noir M: As George Takei says: "Ohhh Myyyyyy." In spite of slow subs, I am completely taken with this police procedural. Well-plotted, great tension, well-written, well-acted. It looks right now like I'll have to wait a whole week for subs, but I'll live. Dang, OCN, you have made a network fangirl out of me.

What I Wish I Was Watching:

The Scholar Who Walks the Night: Lee Joon Ki as a smarty-pants vampire? Yes, please!

K-Drama Moment:

Last night, I dreamed that Lee Min Ho was staying with my family (along with two other actors whose names I couldn't remember after I woke.) They were all heading out for a Disney visit, and I spent a lot of time mothering them all. I fed them all, and made sure to remind them to wear their seatbelts, and mentioned that it was almost like having my oldest (21 yr old) daughter back visiting. ::throws up hands:: I guess dreaming of treating attractive actors like your kid is proof you're getting old.

I started "Girl Who Sees Smells" and I like it so far..... I think? I only watched thhe first episode but I'm confused by so many things... for instance, did killer doctor recognize her at the end? Because if he could recognize her >6 months later, why'd he (spoiler?) kill Yoochun's sister of the same name? They aren't easy to confuse or anything.. idk other than that there were just a lot of little things that made me stop and think "wait wat how/whhy" but that could easily be a translation thing. maybe its time for me to stop acting like i still speak korean and seek out subs. or maybe i should start studying again idk

Yeah I thought about that too and hoping it gets revealed later on.

What I think might have happened is when he went to kill the real Choi Eun Sul - he didn't look at her fact, maybe he went around the back and just slit the throat and walked off, not really looking to see if it was the right one? Which is why, when he sees the real one, he's surprised?

Also, what I didn't quite get was how fast Yoochun's sister died. I mean, from the flashback - seemed like he bumped into the killer, and then immediately found his sister bleeding out - was probably 2 minutes, she shouldn't have lost THAT much blood THAT fast and they could have done a blood transfusion pretty much immediately.

Le sigh.

I was thinking he might have only known it was the wrong girl later in the news. He would have known that it was the family's daughter so if there was an obituary for the one he did killed he would have realized he didn't get the right girl. On the other hand even if he's looking for the girl he isn't sure what happened to her and while he saw her, it was in the dark so he'd want to be 100% sure before he strikes again.

So I've not been watching enough dramas I guess seeing everyone's list. But then exams are coming up and I can't really afford to do too much watching.
Kill Me Heal Me: this one is almost complete, just have to watch the last epi. It was a great journey it just increased my love for Ji Sung and i hope he gets some good awards at the year ending.

Heard it through the grapevine: So I watched the first two episodes but decided to give it a break till my exams are over. But from what I've seen I like it.

Angry Mom: I actually didn't want to pick up another drama but then I thought lets just give it a try. And I was wowed. I have hardly seen Kim Hee Sun in much except for Faith, where she was good but that drama itself was a piece of art so. Here she is just rocking the role. I'm up-to episode 4 I think and this is the first time I felt that Kim Yoo Jung is a very good actress, before i just always found her a little one dimensional but this time around I see her acting chops shaping up finely for a bright future. About the plot yeah it is a little dark, but exams are coming up and I'm already in a dark mood.

Murphy's law of Love: I always find Taiwanese dramas a little nerve grating and screechy for my taste. But this one attracted me for its tittle, and I was pleasantly surprised. The leads are very good, have awesome chemistry. I find the guy's job hilarious and ridiculous but lets just go with it. The story seems cute and above all the guy is a total eye-candy, I never ever lust around guys on my screen, but while watching two episodes I at least said "but isn't he so handsome" to my sister 10 times.

Running Man: Come hell or high water I never miss this one. Even though sometimes I get disappointed week after week. But this week was a blast I loved it loved the theme, loved the guests, Kang Ha Neul why have you been away from Variety. About the ending I think he shared it off-camera.

I recently watched the movie Speedy Scandal and have to say it has become one of my all time favorite movies. The humor, the seriousness of the plot blend in so well.

Oh and I wanted to ask, my friend recently gave me a book named, 'Welcome to the Underworld' apparently it used to be a very famous soompi fanfiction which was later published, I've started it seems interesting if a little obvious, was wondering if any of you have read it!

Honestly, if I do take on UW, this would be my first (I was deciding if I should take on "King's Face", but then decided the drama was just too full of childishness that Seo In-guk deserved better, and someone was right that he was wasted in that drama...), and I fear that I wouldn't match with the awesomeness regarding the intro and ending paragraphs regarding the episodes, 'cause I'm chldish and immature as fuck regarding that and I tend to blab out unnecessary shit...

I think the way I advertised itself didn't seem that appealing. I'm not even sure why I started it since I didn't think it would be at all my kin of show....oh wait, yes I do, it's because of you. I wanted to finally see something your man is in so I'd know what the fuss is about (I just can't bring myself to watch WGM - I do not understand that show....tried once on an earlier season and could get to the ten minute mark). BUT I think it really surprised a lot of people who gave it a chance.

It must be so hard for reviewers to pick and choose in advance. (I myself am bummed that Missing Noir M won't continue to be recapped....I was hoping for it to be like the Bad Guy recaps and comments that I have fond memories of).

Oh are there any kpop fans here? I was never interested in pop songs so I always skipped that mania, and always just stuck with the OSTs. I had no idea whatsoever that YOon Mi Rae can rap, and not the 'idol rap'(am I being condescending? sure). I recently heard her rap in her new songs Bucku Bucku and Bang diggy bang bang. Personally I love the later one it mixes Indian music with rap, a refreshing idea. So I have decided not to turn up my nose on kpop anymore, but I'm not sure if she is even considered kpop?

Yoon Mi-rae is the "queen" of Korean hip-hop and she's as authentic as one can be, none of the wannabe "I'm so hood" faux hip-hop that kpop churns out these days.

I've been a fan of hers since back when she was in Tashannie, and there's just no comparison to any other Korean female rappers, imo. Even on Unpretty Rapstar, the ladies on there said that being compared to her as being the "standard" was an obstacle of them as female rappers.

She's married to Tiger JK, and their son Jordan is super adorable. My mom and I refer to them as the "hip-hop bubu (couple)" because they really are.

Sort of off topic from what you all are talking about but what makes me really uncomfortable about korean hip hop and even rapper idols is that they seem to very rarely acknowledge the roots of rap/hip hop which is african americans and their culture!

I can't really get into k-pop for various reasons but in particular because I see them rip off SO much of african american culture and music but i've read quite alot of anti-black, racist, ignorant comments from some of these individuals and then you couple that up with zero acknowledgement of what is a big influence on their music. The whole thing just turns me off and just gets to me. It's nothing new though, similar situations happens even with american and global artists and fans. Just my thoughts, I know people will jump up to defend like always but I just had to get it off my chest

I get what you mean, Lulu...which is why I'm not that big of a kpop/k-hiphop fan, precisely for your reasons. When I first got into kpop years ago, in the H.O.T. era (yeah, that shows my age, haha)...I remember going "wtf is this sh*t?!" when hearing k-hiphop. It's even worse now with the ignorant idol hip-hoppers who don't even know diddly squat & attempt to be all that cringe-worthy fauxness that really makes me irritated. Their stuff I don't listen to at all.

I don't think that blanket statement regarding idol hip-hop is fair to apply that towards Yoon Mi-rae though, because at least she's part African-American. She doesn't do that type of cringe-worthy fake ignorant hiphop, imo.

The funny thing is I know the beauty standards are pretty high in Korea, being fair, cute, 'induces protective instinct', should be blown away in air kind of weight, but when Idols who are idolized by teenagers, pass comments like these just irk me. The main problem stemms from that "What is your ideal type?" question. I have never in my life heard any idol reply with a simple 'her personality should match with me'
Even though I don't listen to kpop, I have watched many variety shows with idols.
Like I was recently watching a variety with an idol group(won't name them) one of the guys there has dark skin, not dark like indian or african, just korean dark, and the members incessantly teased him about it. He is so insecure he uses a million pills, skin-care whatnot.
And the dumbest thing after all this, when a commenter pointed out that how rude it was, their fans defended them with "its allowed in their society, racism is common there, so its okay"

Okay so I educated myself a little more on MFBTY, Yoon Mi Rae's group, and she is not Kpop, she is not underground either, a rare case of mainstream actual rapping. So they are called K-Hip-Hop, which is cool by me.
As for Yoon, her father is black and her mum korean, so atleast I think she acknowledges her roots, she is probably the only successful inter-racial artist in Korea, which goes on to prove your point, I'm not defending Kpop, I just think she and her husband are pretty cool people.

The thing is I now remember that awesome Running Man episode where they came, that touching kiss in the ending. I knew somewhat of TigerJK and his wife but never connected the dots with Yoon Mi Rae! Haha

Like Tara said, Yoon Mi Rae is the queen of K-Hiphop! She has been the almost the only recognised legit female rapper for years, until Unpretty Rapstar came out. So I don't think she's considered k-pop.
Do check out her other songs, especially Black Happiness. Since you heard Bucku Bucky and Bang Diggy Bang Bang by MFBTY, I also recommened other songs from MFBTY like their first title track Sweet Dream and Let It Go from the latest album, WondaLand.

First off, I loved Ho-Goo. Added it to my favorites list.

Kdramas I'm currently watching
* Heard It Through the Grapevine
* Unkind Women
* The Girl Who Sees Smells -- off to a good start.

Recent Kdramas I've given up on
* Angry Mom
* Super Daddy Yeol

Jdramas I'm currently watching
* Ryusei Wagon
* Dakara Koya

... and the usual assortment of variety shows. My regulars: Roommate, 1D2N, and The Human Condition, plus some others scattered in from time to time.

I have a few Qs -- maybe people here have As?

1) Now that Date, Marumaru Tsuma, Mondai no Aru Restaurant, Second Love, and Genkai Shuraku Kabushiki Kaisha have ended, does anyone know of new Jdramas starting up? Or where I can info on upcoming Jdramas? I just keep checking myasintv's 2015 list, but nothing new so far.

2) Any news on where to find Eng subs for:
* Three Meals a Day, Fishing Village
* Grandpas Over Flowers, Greece

Thanks for any help. :-)

A big THANK YOU to all who recommended Jdrama "Date"! I marathoned it last weekend and it was hilarious! Only a minute into it, I noticed that the main character reminded me of my sister, in the way she talked and her attitude. A couple minutes later we find out she's a mathematician, and I howled. OMG, my sister is a mathematician! And at first I thought the NEET hikimori (unemployed educated agoraphobic) male lead was nothing like my sister's husband however, until I realized that my sister married an underemployed musician/artist/writer who became a stay-at-home dad. So yeah, this really hit home with me! Loved it!

I am still watching IHITTG, and liking it. However I found the last 2 episodes a little flat for some reason. I know they filled in some necessary parts of the story, but I missed the laugh-out-loud elements we had in the first 10 episodes. I hope it doesn't start to drag.

Angry Mom is my new addiction. It makes me wish I was such a badass. I've only watched 2 episodes, so hope to catch up. It is time to do taxes though, so maybe not soon.

Hi everybody...happy OT!

Ducking in very quickly to post up my thoughts, albeit a bit later than usual. Working simulatenously on two papers hasn't left me with much time to watch dramas, but I am keeping up with only one.

Unkind Women: FINALLY some forward movement on the "is it Dad" course...although the ending of ep12 was a bit wtf-ery in regards to Soon-ok's reaction. My mom burst out laughing and I was just dumbfounded...until I re-watched it again and realized she was under the impression that it was Dad's ghost (thanks to Hyun-sook never iterating that he was alive). Hyun-jung was seemingly ice queen-ish since the beginning, until recent eps revealed the layer after layer of her nature...and for her to go to Moon-hak in her despair, shows volumes that she regards him as a shoulder to lean on (although pooey to him for him to go all "I won't work with you because you won't tell me what's going on" bit -- 'til she did reveal why she acted strangely at the family dinner). And who else thinks Hyun-sook's hubby still loves her?? When he "threatened" to tell on her with the secret (imitating the dance and all)...that's when I knew. It's still a bit weird to see him here compared to his Punch persona, though. And I didn't realize this until re-watching Sunny this past weekend...young Hyun-sook and young Jong-mi were both in that too! :P

I actually FFed the parts of Ma-ri with Ru-oh and Doo-jin because I was more intrigued with the Dad part of the story...and maybe I missed this, but Doo-jin and Ru-oh are half-bros?!? Goodness gracious. I know they're setting up the "but our mothers are sworn enemies" typical trope, but two siblings loving the same girl? As if there wasn't enough trope-worthy material already.

I read a headline where Jin Sae-yeon actually said she was worried that Hong Jong-hyun would be "stiff"...??? The irony in that made me burst out laughing...at least he's shown strides in improving his acting! -.- The thought of her being considered lead of Scholar Who Walks the Night is also alarmingly horrible, because I was looking very forward to Lee Jun-ki's return to fantasy sageuk a la Arang & the Magistrate...it is still very mind-boggling that MBC would have the nerve to retract offering Han Groo the lead -.-

Have a great weekend, yall! :)

Just finished episode one of Missing Noir M, but since that recap was posted a while ago (and I know they're not being continued), I figure I have a higher chance of someone sharing their thoughts on it here so I'm posting in both places:

"Oh Kang Ha Neul <3 So my bias for everything. He's the first kdrama actor I ever took note of and I'm so happy he's getting more attention. He's so super creepy.

I think it's pretty obvious who the dead woman is though (unless they are intentionally throwing off the audience) and I hate when they do that but have the 'super brilliant' detectives not even think of it as a possibility. It was the first thing that popped into my head when they asked about her background, and the psychopath is actually crying when they hand her to him. Pretty in your face there detectives.

No idea though how the sister will fit in."

Really? Awww, man. I was hoping they would be, especially since the subbing is so slow (I watched the first ep raw & then went to make sure I was getting the gist of it correctly by reading the recap.)

I wonder if anyplace else is recapping?

Oh good, is my assumption way wrong? That would be good. Although is till should have been something the polite considered.

In the opening note of the recap it says the recappet has too many shows or something like that and it seemed to me that it wouldn't be continued....it's also not one of the squares at the bottom of the homepage under 'shows being recapped'. So sadly it seems like it.

Happy weekend!

Just finished Ho-Gu's love this week. While I liked it overall, I was frustrated with the writing at some points which tempered my enjoyment somewhat.

I've been really light on my drama watching in general since KMHM ended and I'm not sure if it's because I've had a lot more work lately, because current dramas aren't drawing me in or because I've been spending too much of my free time chatting with people about EXO's comeback (oops). Girl Who Sees Smells looks promising, though, and all of the recommendations for Date make me interested in checking it out!

Hi fantasy. I watched ep 1 last night. I found it slow and fairly obvious where they were going with it. But... I was tired. I always try to give things the benefit of the doubt. Will give it fair chance.
