Kim Young-kwang courted for JTBC disaster drama D-Day
by girlfriday
Well, I was fully expecting an idol lineup for the cast of JTBC’s new drama D-Day, since it was announced as a new drama production from SM C&C. I still wouldn’t call Kim Young-kwang an actor with “a weighty presence,” but I like him, especially in his more recent dramas where he’s found a good comic side to his performances (see Pinocchio, Plus Nine Boys). He’s the first actor being courted for the show, but that doesn’t always mean he’ll be the headliner either, so we’ll have to wait to see how the rest of the cast shakes out.
The new disaster drama is being planned as a summer blockbuster on the small screen, depicting a natural disaster that hits Seoul and wreaks havoc on the lives of average citizens. The main characters in the drama will be rescue workers and doctors fighting to save lives on the scene, and Kim Young-kwang has been offered a leading role as a doctor.
His character will be a general surgeon with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. He also has a rebellious streak in him though, and tends to get treated as an outcast. If they can really pull off the CG effects (they don’t have to be perfect, just believably cataclysmic), this could be a really tense, emotional thriller and an uplifting human drama. It’s a big if though, and I feel like we’ll have some competition in the trauma-triage zone with Kim Eun-sook’s Descended From the Sun. Hopefully there’s an epic natural disaster in store to differentiate this one.
D-Day is looking at the late-summer weekend slot following Beloved Eun-dong, but so is Yoon Kye-sang’s Last. May the best drama win? D-Day plans to start shooting in June.

Can they repeat the first scene they had together in that drama too? (the first one with just the two of them, that is)

Why? You can always rewatch it if you care about it so much. I don't even understand what's so amazing about it, it is simply gratuitous in its meaningless violence towards innocent lamps ...

It was a joke, i.e. a thing that one says in jest. Not to be taken literally.

Yeah, mine too ... (I thought the gratuitous lamp violence would give it away)

If he is the lead, I wouldn't mind it at all - he has the screen presence and talent to anchor a show if given the chance.
(I still don't trust SM C&C to not sneak in some untested SM idol or other somewhere in this drama, they mostly seem to forget that they have legit actors on their rolls and just act as SM's idol-actor promotion wing when they're producing)

I only have seen in Pinocchio. I know he can act. He deserves to be a leading man.
I don't think that this drama will be a competition with KES drama. Different timing ,Right?

I think SM idols will cast in this drama along with him. He is good. I really dislike SM idols' acting.

Sorry guys, I am interested in this drama, but I don't know much about this guy. I saw him in pinocchio, but his role was small and that drama was all about leads. And I didn't finish it, I couldn't see his acting. Is he a good actor? Please recall me.

Watch Plus Nine Boys. He's a lead and it's an easy watch.

Well, I like him. I could try this drama if he is in. I just hope it would be a drama hit, because... he can act (that's not always the case with every actor, right everyone?!), and learn too. He can be a decent lead. But...
Hey, did they just screwed up Song Jae-rim?
Let's wait to see who will really become the lead of a disaster drama...!

Maybe Rim can be the antagonist. Like the Umbrella Corp guy who caused the end of the world. Because science!
I miss his creepy smile from Age of Feeling. :(

Yeah, right. Someone who doesn't speak too much, with everything in the creepy smile and the scary eyes! Good old times in Age of Feeling or in Two Weeks (or even in TMTETS!). But I'm just craving him getting the girl (I'm not watching Unkind Women yet, by the way).
Whatever, I'll pray for you mary! I smile a lot because of you, you know~

I think this drama has a lot of potential, if it's done right it could be a really great watch. I liked him him fine in Pinocchio but my view of him has been tainted ever since I watched White Christmas in which he plays a horrible person. But I think he has the talent to be the leading man and this drama it could end up being a great role for him. Just have to wait and see if he takes it.

Fascinating that they still won't tell us what the disaster will be. I'm opting for a meteor strike, an earthquake, or a century blizzard. Or, possibly an epidemic of giant killer mermaids, all played by Kpop idols.

I like Killer Mermaid idea!
The mermaids can travel along water. So the disaster is people dare not take a bath or use the toilet.

Can I swipe this? (It would be fun to draw cartoon mermaids popping out of toilets.)

Tbh I don't think he can carry a drama. He's not bad, but he's not main lead material to me (also he is a douche, but I don't like him much as an actor either).

Didn't liked him in any drama that i saw with him (Pin., PNB and WC). He is a bland and boring, with one type of acting, imo. I'm sorry. But, who knows. Maybe he could surprise me. I'm still positive, but he is not exciting me. I expected someone more interesting as an actor.

The thing is, he acted as a doctor before in Good Doctor so I'm wondering what he's going to offer this time. D-Day sounds like a drama which has the potential to be big so casting is crucial tbh.

Please don't kill me. But I can't get over one thing (or maybe 2 things) about him.
Do a search on Korean mouth corner surgery--permanent smile and see if he doesn't look like he's had that done?
I know he was a model first--and I have nothing against models--but, every time he had a serious scene in 9 Boys, his mouth smiling even while he said sad lines just bugged me.
I'll apologize if he's your one true love, but I guess I'm just too superficial, because every time I see him, I notice.

Ooh, I likey. Okay, I admit, they can stick in 2 SM idols max, as long as they are not playing the lead, I'm good. Unless, they really stick in an SM idol who can act...like, Sooyoung or D.O.

I have nothing against SM C&C, but I don't want a bunch of idols in this drama, I know there are some exception and idols who can actually act, but this worries me. The plot could bring something awesome to the screen, it will be too bad if it turned out bad because of bad acting. About Kim Young-kwang, I loved him in plus nine boys, and he was not bad in the web drama dr. Ian, the character description doesn't look like something too out of his league. SM C&C does have good actors under their management. I'm just crossing my finger for this to turn out good.
