Kim Woo-bin looks at killer role in new action thriller
by girlfriday
It looks like Kim Woo-bin will be sticking to the big screen for the time being. I was sad about him turning down the Hong sisters drama (that is, until Yoo Yeon-seok came along and made it right as rain), but it’s good to see that his movie career is taking off. His current coming-of-age comedy Twenty is enjoying first place at the box office, which means that he’s probably fending off new movie offers with a stick. He’s considering a new action thriller called Deception and Murder, where he’d play a killer.
The new project comes from director Kim Tae-kyun, of A Barefoot Dream and Temptation of Wolves. It’s a suspenseful story about a detective and a killer who face off while the clock is ticking on an open murder case. The investigation into the unsolved case is in such disarray that jurisdiction hasn’t even been decided. Meanwhile, one detective chases after the killer in a densely woven mystery.
Kim Woo-bin is being courted to play the killer, which is kind of perfect for him, really. He’s played rebels and gangsters and vampires and thieves — your general array of felonies and misdemeanors — and could stand to graduate to one good psychopath character. He certainly has the blood-curdling stare down, though if deception and trickery is the name of the game, I guess he’d have to be a little less obvious about the bad boy streak.
Once the cast is locked down, Deception and Murder plans to start shooting later this year.

If I were him, I'd stick to movies and establish myself slowly to become an A-lister. But since I'm me, I wish he'd do a drama once in a while because I'd rather see him for two hours in a week instead of two hours every six months! Come on Woo-bin, there must be something that interests you in Dramaland!

And just why are you trying to pigeonhole him into playing these sort of roles. He played them well so far, good for him...As a growing actor he should spread his wings beyond his comfort zone, that's how he'll achieve longevity and success.
I think, now that he's managed to play all these "negative" characters to a T, maybe he should play something totally the opposite...Let him show us his vulnerable side, we know he IS tough, I want to see him soft.
He tackled comedy well in Twenty, he was not bad as a criminal master mind in TTs...He should do something emotional and go against the grain. Let me believe he has the acting chops to go beyond being the next "action hero" ...Though, from the looks of it, he might be stuck in that genre for life!

I want Woo Bin as hapless romantic guy in a drama actually. Hong Sisters' drama role could be perfect for him.. *sigh*
Or Joseon king
Or Joseon warrior/soldier
Basically anything sageuk for him..
And basically not movie, I haven't even watched Technicians and Twenty yet because no subs available... *sobs

I don't think he is suitable for sageuk, not yet. He would need to change his speech and body language totally, somehow I don't see it. But his Vampire Idol co stars Lee Soo Hyuk and Lee Yoo Bi look very good in sageuks, LYB especially.

haha it was only a matter of time before he played a psychopath. I'd like to say I predicted this, but any casting director worth his salt would've had this guy on his/her roster for their next killer. Go forth! Go forth and kill them with your eyebrows Woo-bin!

That's not true. Films are more prestigious in South Korea, the most respected actors work exclusively in film instead of tv. Maybe young international fans might move on, but South Korea's public definitely won't. For Woobin to successfully break into film at such a young age is impressive.

Korean domestic market vs the broader international market. I wonder which one wins? There's a reason why so many celebrities are going to China, despite lower quality dramas/movies (plot wise).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Korea is still their main market for a long-term career.
There's a reason why domestic box office and television ratings matter, and frankly an actor who'd rather build a solid career than only chase easy Chinese money is to be respected.
Ivana
April 4, 2015 at 11:12 AM
@pogo I'll let numbers speak for themselves. You might have to extrapolate a little bit, but the only room for growth is to expand into the international market. Only a small amount of korean films get exported internationally (which are also limited in countries). The only reason why Hollywood actors are so respectable is because the movies are shown worldwide. I mean you definitely can't say it's because they got more skills or make better quality films than actors from other countries, who are known mostly to the domestic audience.
The article below compares the average income of korean singers, actors, and tv personalities. The singers experienced much higher growth because they focus their activities abroad. Even groups that are not as popular within korea (eg tvxq) do better because they promote abroad. However, if you want to go with the idealistic view that "money doesn't matter over the quality of the product" I suggest you wake up, because in the end it's business. Lastly, China is by no means "easy money" considering the competition.

One more thing (sorry to be long winded), but TV ratings mean absolutely nothing for the actors' exposure, even for the domestic audience at this day and age with internet. The concern is for the TV stations, who are trying to make up for it by selling the dramas abroad. I highly doubt Ji Chang Wook's popularity didn't increase in Korea from Healer, despite the dismal ratings.

@pogo
I think some people who go to China are just trying to solidify their international fanbase as insurance. If you have an international fanbase then things could go better for you in South Korea in the long run. Like if you kept failing at ratings in South Korea and have no hallyu power, South Korea would stop giving you lead roles. However, if your name can bring in big money due to international exports, then South Korea would still give you those roles even if ratings fail domestically. That's what I believe.

He is nowhere near Song Jong Ki and Ha Jung Wo in terms of acting... His acting is just bad in "the con artist".. t's sad when Im Hoo Hwan, the better actor had a lesser role in that movie instead of Kim Woo Bin. He won't be able the kind of actor who can carried a movie by his acting.
Then again, Han Hyo Jo and Shin Min Ah can keep doing movie and be popular despite their acting is not that stellar.. Maybe it will work

Ha Jung Woo is ten years older than him and has a lot more experience. So does Song Joong Ki. Compare him to his contemporaries if you want a fair comparison.
And Shin Min Ah is a better actress than most people think. She carries both comedy and melodrama well, dismissing her for her looks and cf queen status isn't right. If she was just a pretty face she could never have pulled off a role like the nagging wife in My Love My Bride or the role of the bitter sister in that movie she did with Gong Hyo Jin. Or Gumiho and Arang.

I agree with what you said about Shin Min Ah's acting ability, but am wondering why people thinks she gets by with a "pretty face". Tbh, she's one of the weirdest looking actresses imo (not ugly, but wierd).

It's good to know that Twenty is doing well in the box office. The trailers were very funny; I'm looking forward to watching it soon.
I really do want KWB to do a drama so I can see him more. At the same time, if movies are more prestigious, then I want him to fare well in them. Super happy that he is getting more offers!! About the movie, I somehow think he is not gonna be the real murderer but the accused person, and he will aid the detective to bring the real culprit to justice.
