Kim Nam-gil and Jeon Do-yeon get dangerously close in The Shameless

This might be a movie that I check out for the acting performances, though it’ll have to be a dark and gloomy kind of day to get me in the mood. Jeon Do-yeon (The Way Home, Countdown) and Kim Nam-gil (Pirates, Shark) pair up for the “hardboiled melo” The Shameless, about a detective who goes undercover to get close to a killer’s girlfriend and ends up falling for her.

The movie stars Jeon Do-yeon as a bar hostess and girlfriend to a murderer on the run (played by Park Sung-woong), and Kim Nam-gil as a resourceful rogue detective who does whatever it takes to get the job done. In his quest to nab the killer, Kim Nam-gil goes undercover as a criminal to get close to the girlfriend, but as they spend more and more time together, lines begin to blur.

The movie is about them filling each other’s loneliness and their desire to turn lies into truth. The taglines for the movie read, “The detective meets the killer’s woman,” “It began as a lie,” and “I want to believe, even if it’s a lie.” So, I’m sensing a theme here. Maybe you two lovebirds could go on the run together? Or is that solving a problem by creating another problem?

The Shameless is helmed by Oh Seung-wook, who wrote and directed Kilimanjaro and wrote Christmas in August. It premieres at Cannes in May.
