Hoya joins Mask as Su Ae’s brother
by javabeans
Another casting is confirmed for SBS’s melodrama Mask, with Infinite idol Hoya (also of Answer Me 1997) signing on to play Su Ae’s (Yawang) younger brother in the drama about a heroine who masks her real identity to marry into a chaebol family.
Joo Ji-hoon (Medical Top Team) is set to play the man who loves his woman unconditionally, while Yeon Jung-hoon (I Summon You, Gold) and Yoo In-young (Three Musketeers) will be taking on antagonist roles. Yoo In-young will play Joo Ji-hoon’s half-sister who’s described as a tragic character; born into wealth, she possesses everything in the world but for the heart of the man she loves (Yeon Jung-hoon), realizing that he loves another woman after she’s married him. Fifty bucks says that woman is Su Ae — or is that so obvious it’s not even worth betting on?
Hoya’s character is an immature twentysomething who gets into trouble everywhere he goes, often making things difficult for his family as a result. Still, he is quite loyal to his parents and sister, so perhaps more a source of stress and not an outright bad egg.
Well, I like Hoya for his warm portrayal of a lovely character in Answer Me, even though he was pretty terrible in the idol drama She’s So Lovable — but that drama was so bad on other levels that his individual badness doesn’t register much compared to its overall badness. I’d rather see him playing a likable kid brother with less screentime in a better show anyway, and with Secret’s writer onboard for Mask, I expect fast plot movement, dramatic rivalries, and lots of emotion-tugging.
Mask follows Girl Who Sees Smells and premieres in May as an SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama.

Writing is definitely a great factor. I mean, look at Hoya in 1997 and L in Shut Up Flower Boy Band. They did well on each respective shows despite being still "green" in acting.

Javabeans I completely agree with you....he was so good in 1997 but She's So Loveable was such a let down...but it was a letdown in so many way that I'm not sure I can say if Hoya was bad or not. I just hope he brings his 1997 game.

Joining you guys in hoping he's more like his Answer Me 1997 acting levels and not whatever he was doing in She's So blah.

I thought Hoya was decent in SSL, but that probably has a lot to do with everyone else sucking so hard that he seemed relatively better. I mean he had like 2 scenes in the drama most were with either Krystal or L. And those two are otherworldly level bad.
I still remember him so fondly from 1997, so I'm very happy he's pursuing acting again. Hope he does really well!

LOL
But I'm also glad he gets another chance to act. C'mon Hoya! More 97, less Loveable please. *cross fingers*

Hoya was so wasted in She's So Lovable! Ughhh...his character disappeared after a few episodes...LOL :)
I'm glad he joined this show...at least he'll get something worthy to do here...he was fantastic in AM1997!

Right, I felt he's miscast in She's So Boring. But then the whole drama is bad and the writing is the worst.
For this drama though, the writing should be better than SSL.

I hope he does well and not overact. I notice that the problem with INFINITE is that they overact. DO WELL HOWON!<3
