Girl Who Sees Smells: Episode 1

Well, this is gonna be just plain FUN. For a show that’s about two people whose lives were irrevocably changed by a serial murderer, Girl Who Sees Smells offers enough smart and (hilariously timed) unexpected humor to give it a nice balance. So far it manages to change tone from serious to funny and back again in a way that surprises the viewer, and enhances the two very different “feels” without making either seem out of place. I’m amused by the lead characters, and at the same time drawn in by their dramatic stories, and I can’t wait to see more.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

Four Years Ago.

On a foggy night, a teenage girl texts her mother that she’ll be home soon and to heat up some water for ramyun. This is our heroine, whose school uniform’s name tag tells us is CHOI EUN-SEOL (Shin Se-kyung).

Her mother’s phone lights up in her hand, but it quickly becomes obvious that her mother is no longer alive. A gloved hand takes the phone from her limp hand and opens it to read the text. The man is entirely dressed in black leather and his face is obscured by a hat and hoodie, and he goes to another room to drag a man’s body out next. ~shivers~

Unaware of what she’s walking into, Eun-seol bounces in the front door and announces that she’s home, but freezes in horror when she sees her mother lying dead on the floor. The murderer silently puts a finger to his lips to shush her, then steps very close to gently put a hand around Eun-seol’s throat, as she struggles to process what’s happening.

The clock lets out a sudden loud chime, and Eun-seol takes advantage of the murderer’s momentary distraction to slap his hand away and make a run for it. He gives chase, but Eun-seol manages to stay just out of his grasp as she runs for her life. She manages to make it to the main road, but she’s hit by a car, the impact so hard that it sends her flying into the air and over the car to land in the street.

Injured and stunned, Eun-seol lays in the road and sees her parents’ murderer standing in the shadows, unable to approach now that there are witnesses. He looks at something in his hand, and we see that in the brief struggle, the killer managed to rip Eun-seol’s name tag off her jacket — oh no, he knows her name. Killer and potential victim lock eyes, and it’s not until it begins to rain and Eun-seol passes out that the killer finally turns and walks away.

That same night, our hero CHOI MU-GAK (Park Yoochun), takes a call from his younger sister, whose name is also CHOI EUN-SEOL (Kim So-hyun). Her bus was in an accident but she only has mild injuries, and she asks him to pick her up at the hospital. Mu-gak seems like a very friendly person and a sweet oppa, and he even brings his sister some food to eat while she waits to be discharged.

He has a bit of difficulty finding his sister in the busy emergency room, and there’s a strange beat where he bumps into a man in a doctor’s coat (played by Song Jong-ho, though we don’t have a name for him yet), but he’s also wearing an eerily familiar pair of black sneakers and has blood on his hand. ~double shivers~ He and Mu-gak lock eyes for a moment, but neither says a word.

Mu-gak finds his sister but she appears to be sleeping, and doesn’t respond when he announces that the food is here. He gently touches her shoulder and Eun-seol flops over too easily, and Mu-gak sees that her throat has been slashed. Oh no, there’s blood everywhere. Mu-gak panics, and he screams for help and begs Eun-seol to wake up, but she’s already gone. He can do nothing but wail in grief.

Seven days later.

A police car pulls up to a beach, where a large area has been cordoned off around the bodies of a man and woman that have been propped sitting up against a rock. The policeman, DETECTIVE OH (Jung In-ki) asks for details, and is told that the victims are a married couple that have been missing for a week, since the same night their daughter Choi Eun-seol was in a car accident.

Detective Oh sees a pattern that looks like a barcode has been carved into the man’s left wrist, and from the look on his face, this isn’t the first time he’s seen this. He asks for clarification on the daughter, who’s still in a coma, and he cryptically mutters, “She’s the witness,” before running from the scene.

One hundred ninety-three days later.

In the hospital, Eun-seol finally wakes from her coma. When she opens her eyes, the nurse gasps — Eun-seol’s left eye is now a strange blue color. Eun-seol’s vision clears, but she’s assaulted by strange colors and shapes flying through the air all around her. They float from air vent and off of the flowers in the room, and Eun-seol begins to panic.

Detective Oh enters the room and she sees the same colors and shapes coming off of him. As he entreats her to calm down, Eun-seol screams and tries to wave the frightening visions away, and has to be physically restrained.

Later, in voice-over, Eun-seol tells us that three weird things happened when she finally opened her eyes. First, that she woke up at all when nobody thought she ever would. Her left eye had turned blue, though the doctors had no scientific explanation for it.

The second weird thing is that she has no idea how she came to be lying in that coma, or any memory of her life before waking up. We see Eun-seol going through physical therapy and wearing an eye-patch to avoid scaring people, and she’s now calling Detective Oh, “Dad.”

Apparently, he’s taken advantage of her lost memory to invent a new life for her, adopting her and giving her a new name (she’s now being called by the name I’ll use to refer to her from now on, OH CHO-RIM). He appears to genuinely care for Cho-rim and, knowing nothing else, she seems to be a cheerful girl.

Cho-rim admits in voice-over that he was a virtual stranger to her when she woke from her coma — but as far as she knows, this is her real father. He brings her a special contact lens to hide her blue eye, and she’s thrilled to see herself looking normal.

Six months later.

Cho-rim is a happy, well-adjusted girl again, though her “father” is a bit overprotective and constantly reminds her to watch for strangers. She and Detective Oh seem to have a very close and loving relationship, and she even cutely chides him for his hovering before running off to school.

She stops for ice cream, and it’s clear that she’s adjusted very well to her ability to see scents, as she can identify every flavor just based on the colors that float prettily off the containers. She narrates that the third weird thing that happened after her accident is that she can now see scents as visible colors and shapes.

A customer frantically asks the man behind the counter if he’s found her lost wallet, but he denies having seen anything. Cho-rim notices the scent of the lotion the customer has on her hands, and sees a baseball cap behind the counter with the same scent wafting out from under it, and knows that the shop employee actually does have the woman’s wallet. Cho-rim gives the employee the stink-eye and motions for him to give the wallet back now, and he’s forced to comply.

Mu-gak is on a stakeout in a convenience store, eating ramyun after ramyun as an excuse to be there for so long. Oh gurk, he’s had something like four of those huge bowls, and the clerk gives him an annoyed look as she brings him a fifth. Out in the cop car, DETECTIVE KI (Jo Hee-bong) and DETECTIVE YEH (Choi Tae-joon) marvel at how much Mu-gak eats and wonder why such a low-ranking officer volunteers for dangerous undercover work.

Detective Ki has Mu-gak figured out — he’s angling for a promotion. Offended that he’s doing this for self-serving reasons, Detective Yeh wants to give Mu-gak a piece of his mind, but Detective Ki stops him. They’re short-staffed, and they need the extra help.

The convenience store clerk brings Mu-gak two hot cups of coffee this time, and he apologizes for asking her to bring everything to him, since he can’t move from his position. No longer the smiling, happy man he used to be, Mu-gak now speaks in a monotone and barely shows any facial expressions.

He downs one of the cups of piping-hot coffee in a few quick gulps, making the clerk clutch her own throat. Mu-gak just picks up the second cup and drinks it just as quickly. Okay, ouch.

Cho-rim now works as a gopher for a small theater company called Frog Troupe, and she’s so enamored of the stage that she’s got the whole show memorized. But after the show, the director tells the cast and crew that the theater is losing money, and may have to close if they don’t do something to draw bigger audiences.

He gives them three months to prepare an audition, and the funniest three teams will be chosen to go onstage. There will be no special consideration for seniority, and even Cho-rim, the maknae (youngest) could be put onstage if she’s funny enough.

On Cloud Nine at this possibility, Cho-rim daydreams of fame as she mops the stage two months later. She imagines herself going on TV Entertainment Tonight, and describes her rise to fame. After winning the Frog Troupe auditions, she appears on Running Man (hey, it’s the whole Running Man gang!) where her dancing earns the adoration of the entire nation.

Lost in her daydream, Cho-rim doesn’t notice her Frog Troupe sunbae until he smacks her upside the head. He tells her that despite all their practicing, he won’t be auditioning with her after all. Cho-rim panics that she can’t find another partner with only ten days until the audition, but he’s not moved.

Mu-gak is still staking out that same convenience store, and tonight his target walks in. Mu-gak smoothly locks the door and traps the guy inside. He doesn’t even react when the man pulls a knife, and just calmly tells him to put that thing down.

Detectives Ki and Yeh are in the car, too busy talking about girls to notice Mu-gak being threatened by a knife-wielding criminal. Mu-gak still speaks in that monotone as he figures that the guy won’t drop the knife, so he should probably break his arm or leg or something. Deciding it’s time to act, Mu-gak raises his arm threateningly to knock the guy out like a badass… and drops unconscious. What?

Detectives Ki and Yeh finally notice something happening in the store and get out to stop the suspect before he can escape. Detective Ki gets in the way of a deliveryman and is knocked to the ground, while the flying box of food nails Detective Yeh right in the face. The suspect gets away while Mu-gak snores and drools peacefully in the convenience store.

The chief of the homicide division (Lee Won-jong) is stopped on his way into the station by an unidentified man, who seems to be in a position of some authority and has an obvious personal beef with the chief. He clearly gets a lot of pleasure out of the fact that his men let an important suspect get away. The chief gets in a counter-jab about the man’s teenage son having run away three days ago.

Detectives Ki and Yeh are slapping Mu-gak around for working so much that he fell asleep and let the suspect escape, which Mu-gak endures without a word. The chief enters and just punches Mu-gak square in the face, then takes him to the roof for a talk.

He asks Mu-gak why he became a police officer, not believing his stock answer that he wanted to help people — he knows Mu-gak has a more personal motivation. Mu-gak admits that he wants a promotion to the homicide unit, and his desire is intense, but the chief just tells him that if he ever gets in his men’s way again, he’ll break his legs.

Cho-rim delivers refreshments to the troupe who are all rehearsing for the auditions, and the girl who normally plays the lead female roles (and who stole Cho-rim’s audition partner) pulls some pretty snarky rank on her. Cho-rim takes it cheerfully, and the troupe director notices her positive attitude. The lead actress sends Cho-rim out for food, her treat for landing a television role.

Cho-rim picks up the food but has some trouble with the actress’s car, and she accidentally sideswipes a man on a scooter — it’s Mu-gak, chasing another suspect. Cho-rim helps him up and gasps at a bleeding gash on his forehead and his obviously dislocated arm, but the injuries seem to be news to Mu-gak.

Suddenly a van passes a bit too close, and Mu-gak uses his good arm to dramatically swing Cho-rim out of danger, holding her close for a long moment as they lock eyes. It’s quite a romantic moment… until he sees the suspect getting away and unceremoniously throws her to the ground, HAHA. Mu-gak whacks his injured arm against her car door as he gets in to chase his target (seriously, OUCH) and seems not to even feel it.

Cho-rim barely manages to jump into the car before Mu-gak peels out, and they chase the suspect down a sidewalk, knocking aside people and smashing through decorative planters. Cho-rim screams at him to stop immediately, but he shuts her up by flashing his badge and threatening (still in his monotone voice) to charge her with obstruction of justice if she doesn’t help him. Suddenly Cho-rim is encouraging Mu-gak to drive faster or he’ll lose the guy, pfft.

Mu-gak is focused on getting his man no matter what, so focused that when the suspect jumps off his motorcycle and runs into a mall, he tries to get out of the car without releasing his seat belt. OMG, the look he shoots to Cho-rim to check if she saw that, I’m DYING. And yes, she saw that.

As they head into the mall, Cho-rim makes a point to look at the handlebars of the motorcycle the man was driving, seeing his personal scent as a sharp green aura. Mu-gak loses the man in the crowd, but Cho-rim is confident which way he went, and Mu-gak observes her with interest as she follows a trail only she can see.

She asks if he robbed a beauty salon, and Mu-gak remembers that that’s exactly what happened. He’d confronted the man during the robbery, and didn’t flinch when the criminal broke not one, but two chairs over his back. He’d been distracted long enough for the man to escape, and appropriated a scooter to chase him, which was when he collided with Cho-rim.

Mu-gak stares at Cho-rim, astonished that she knew the suspect had robbed a salon. She sees in her mind’s eye that the man had entered a specific elevator, and pushes Mu-gak onto it. She also knows which floor the man is on because she can see the same green aura on the button, and the two find themselves in a fancy sauna.

Mu-gak complains that he never saw the guy’s face because he’d been wearing a helmet, and gives up since everyone here is wearing the same clothes. He says it’s game over once the guy steals someone’s clothing, but Cho-rim hilariously corrects that it’s game over if he washes his hands. She deduces that if he’d touched anything and left a trace it would be in the men’s locker room, and orders Mu-gak to get undressed (rawr?).

HAHA, the two of them enter the locker room with Mu-gak dressed in sauna clothing and Cho-rim wearing Mu-gak’s clothes, with her face and hair hidden under a hoodie and mask. So far Mu-gak has gone along with her out of curiosity, but he loses patience quickly as he watches her stare, not at the people, but the lockers.

But she knows what she’s doing, and quickly finds the suspect’s locker by the lingering green aura on the keypad. She tells Mu-gak she’ll wait outside the locker room while he catches the guy, and calls her director to tell him that she’s helping a policeman catch a criminal. She finds Mu-gak’s handcuffs in the pocket of the jacket he’s still wearing, realizing he’ll need them to apprehend the suspect.

When the suspect goes back to his locker, Mu-gak (wearing a towel on his head, OMG I can’t even) blandly asks if he just robbed a beauty salon. The guy makes a break for it but Mu-gak trips him and neatly snaps him in the face with his towel, giving himself time to throw the suspect to the ground.

Cho-rim runs in to help him cuff the guy, but one last flail from the criminal knocks Cho-rim to the floor, and her hair and sunglasses go flying. All the men react to a woman in the locker room by hiding their bits — all but one guy who drops his towel in shock. Cho-rim gets an eyeful and runs out shrieking, hee.

They turn the suspect over to Detective Yeh, and Mu-gak offers to help them interrogate the guy but Detective Ki tells him he needs a hospital. Cho-rim waves him over and tsks that the car and Mu-gak are in the same beat-up condition, offering him a ride. She overrides his protests and insists he see a doctor, who patches him up and asks to speak to Cho-rim privately.

The doctor tells Cho-rim that Mu-gak just endured fifteen stitches and relocation of his shoulder, but that he didn’t react to what must have been an enormous amount of pain. Cho-rim confirms that she hasn’t seen Mu-gak seeming to be in any pain, and the doctor figures he must have analgesia, or the inability to feel pain.

Cho-rim denies any responsibility for Mu-gak and quickly leaves, offering to pay the bill. On Mu-gak’s way out, he bumps shoulders with a doctor, and holy crap it’s the same guy from the hospital the night his sister was killed, the one with the bloody hands. He seems to possibly recognize Mu-gak, though the recognition doesn’t go both ways. As Mu-gak and Cho-rim leave the building, the doctor watches them out a window. Again with the ~shivers~

Cho-rim takes Mu-gak to a coffee shop where her friend (Park Jin-joo) works, and she tells her friend he was injured because of her. She offers to pay the hospital bill if Mu-gak’s injuries get worse, and hands over her contact information. He also gives her his information, offering to fix the car’s damages.

Mu-gak asks how she knew the perpetrator had robbed a salon, and she covers by fibbing that she’s read about some recent salon robberies online. Mu-gak is skeptical, wondering how she knew he got on that particular elevator and which floor he exited. Cho-rim just says she’s got pretty good intuition, but Mu-gak still isn’t buying it, because intuition wouldn’t tell her exactly which locker the man used.

She’s saved from explaining further by their coffee order, and when she sees Mu-gak take a large gulp of his coffee she does the same, burning her mouth badly. Mu-gak looks a bit embarrassed that he can’t feel the hot coffee, which is so cute. He gulps the rest of his cup while Cho-rim can only gape.

They say their goodbyes outside the shop and each turn to go, but Mu-gak stops when he hears a woman’s voice loudly call out, “Choi Eun-seol!” She recognizes Cho-rim from school, but having no memory from before her accident, Cho-rim says she must have the wrong person.

Mu-gak listens to all this in a state of shock, and when the woman leaves, he and Cho-rim turn to stare at each other, neither of them having any idea why a strange woman called Cho-rim by his sister’s name.

COMMENTS

I’ll be honest, based on the plot description and hard-to-get-a-bead-on trailers, I went into Girl Who Sees Smells with hope, but fully expecting it to be a hot mess. I have never been so glad to admit I was wrong. In fact I was so wrong, I will now do my Interpretive Dance of Wrongity-Wrongness. This show is zippy, clever, well-balanced and very well-cast, and I’m already hooked good.

As far as the casting goes, I think that so far (because we haven’t met all of our players yet) the casting is just one hundred percent spot-on. Park Yoochun plays Mu-gak with a skill and subtlety that shows how deadened he’s become to his emotions and his physical sensations, yet you can see he’s not completely unaffected by what happens around him. There are tiny moments where we see frustration, embarrassment, confusion, humor, and even grief in his eyes. I’m very much looking forward to watching those small moments of feeling become larger, and seeing him come back to the land of the emotionally living.

And I just have to say it: I can see now why Shin Se-kyung has gotten a bad rap about her acting in the past. I’ve seen her in some of her early work, and I’ve seen her more recently in Iron Man and now this, and it’s totally clear to me now… Shin Se-kyung was born for comedy. She has a fantastic instinct for timing and a way of using her face to hilarious effect, not to mention a complete disregard for whether she looks ridiculous or not and a willingness to just go for the physical joke when needed. I just find her wonderful, endearing, and completely engaging when she’s being funny. No wonder, when she was called on to tamp down her comedic side and be serious in early roles, she wasn’t seen as a good actor — she’s totally unsuited for serious characters. I’m just happy she’s getting a chance to exercise her comedic chops, because we would have missed out on some pretty hilarious stuff if she hadn’t.

As for the show itself, I’m really caught up in the story already. I appreciate how well Mu-gak and Cho-rim’s lives dovetailed to entwine them in the same tragic event, and unlike some drama premises, it doesn’t feel contrived or manipulated to make us believe they have a connection. Something as simple as sharing a name and a random bus accident, caused both of them to lose loved ones on the same night, and I find it entirely believable. It lends a feeling of helplessness to their situations, that if just one tiny thing had gone differently (or even if one of the girls had been given a slightly different name), maybe none of it would have happened. I ache for Mu-gak especially, because his sister had to die for such a useless reason, and because he’s the one carrying the scars and the memories of that night. Cho-rim, mercifully, has no idea of what she went through (yet). It will be interesting to see how Mu-gak slowly recovers his emotions, while Cho-rim will have to remember what happened to her and come to grips with it.

I’m also very impressed with the way the show manages to give us two very different tones, where some scenes are very serious and downright terrifying, yet I also found myself laughing so hard a few times that I had to pause the show to collect my wits. It’s not easy to make two such wildly opposed emotional reactions all in one hour feel completely natural, without any jarring transitions or feeling that something isn’t quite right. In fact, the show often uses an abrupt change of tone to give us big laughs, such as the super-serious car chase that ends in Mu-gak trying to exit the car with his seat belt still fastened. The very unexpectedness of that moment is what made it so freaking hilarious, and that sort of moment happened several times during this first episode. I really, really hope that kind of humor carries throughout the run of the show.

I’m giving Girl Who Sees Smells two thumbs up and an A-plus, for balance, compelling story and characters, and fantastic acting by our leads that leave me chomping at the bit to see more. I think, if the show can keep up this high level of excellence in all areas through to the end, we’ll have something really special on our hands.

They really do. I love the cute eye flirting that is going on between the two. The hidden smile, it just feels like we are spying in on a epic, soulmate romance.

I hope the PD keeps, the cute, fun elements going and doesn't go too melo.

ps. that doctor guy, plays serial killer roles so chillingly, he was like that in Suspicious Housekeeper as well.

Totally agree with you I was definitely against her casting as I've seen her in other pieces and it just didn't do it for me. I felt that she definitely improved in iron man, but here she is really good like, 0o ,really fitting in. Good Job SSK !!

I was surprised at how much I liked this show!! Never seen Shin Sekyung in anything besides Running Man (which I liked her in) but I knew people have complained that she has no acting talent and is just a pretty face. She's definitely pretty but I think she's fantastic in this role. I laughed out loud at her antics several times! My most looked forward to show right now.

I got bullied into checking this out by a friend and it's so adorable, omg! The characters are so likeable and it's totally refreshing to get characters that are so ordinary at what they do. They aren't 'geniuses' at being a gag artist or a police officer but they're decent enough which makes everything so realistic despite the odd premise.

I'm loving Yoochun here and I just want him to do romcoms forever instead of doing heavy melos like Miss Ripley and I Miss You. But the shocking one has to be Shin Se-kyung who is actually so likeable! I didn't beleive she could ever improve but maybe Iron Man really did click something in her. I think she fits Eun-sol to a T so I'm hoping she keeps it up and keep improving. So much YAY all round!

And, go go go Yoochun!

thank god i never SSK's dramas before and I found her lovable in this drama, so when people her acting was bad, I've to said her acting is great, even when yoochun said they're too awkward each other, but I can see the chemistry between them.

but I wonder something about "4 years ago" in the beginning of drama, we know that 200 days and 6 months has passed since choi eun seol's parent killed. but in episode 2..

[SPOILER ALERT]

in episode 2 it shows that 3 years has passed since incident, but the relationship between moo gak and cho rim didn't show that they've known each other for a long time. am I missing something? how can time can jump 3 years without any info? I'm so confused

Yoochun said they were awkward in the photoshoot taken right after the day of script reading. They are not awkward at all, they are super chummy and adorable in all BTS. Even their first shooting together they are already super close and cute.

i actually think she still overacts and the awkwardness is part of his character (his acting is not stiff)
some of her reactions are a bit over exaggerated
but she is still a million times better than she used to be and has a cute engaging air.

I personally find her much better and more endearing than Yoochun so far. She's hilarious and totally at ease in this role. Yoochun is meh so far (that whole scene with his baby sister was so cringey) though much better in episode 2.

0

She does overact that is why she is perfect for comedy since overacting can be a plus when doing slapstick and such. When she does serious roles her overacting really stands out as bad acting.

@Dot

Like really? But I love that scene, so much love, such a loving big brother, the cuteness, I want a big brother like Mugak!
Different strokes for different folks, I guess, haha

glad to know that, cause they look so adorable when they're together >.<

The time thing confused me in the first episode, as well. Is Cho Rim working for the comedy troupe while she's in school and is that the present or was the ice cream scene in the past and she's graduated and is working in the troupe in the present?

I think they just need to tighten the editing of this drama. They keep bouncing from scene to scene in non-chronological order so it gets confusing.

I think they miss to show the 3yrs time leap in episode 1. It is make sense if ChoRim back to high school as sophomore or senior student 6months after accident. Thus the ice cream scene. Then ChoRim work in the troupe after graduating high school or 3 years after accident. Because there's also no way that MooGak manage to become police officer in less than 1 years.

yes, maybe you're right. there's no way moo gak being police in less than 1 years, they miss to show us 3 years or 2 years later after the ice cream scene, that's why I'm so confused the scene jump to yoochun at the convenient store and chorim working in troupe and not wearing school uniform again

Thank you, thank you for the recap. When I watched it on Viki it was at 98% subbed and somehow I missed that Yoochun's sister was in a bus accident and the two were different people with the same name. I kept thinking they were the same person and that didn't quite make sense. (And was going to be really weird for a romcom.)

I'm really loving the show. The episodes fly by and I'm like, "What?! It's already over?!" Can't wait for next week.

Thanks so much for recapping this, LollyPip! I wish we could see your Interpretive Dance of Wrongity-Wrongness.

I, too, enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. And wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, I'm no longer allergic to SSK! This is the first time I've seen her doing comedy-- and you're right, it seems she was meant to do (only) comedic roles. She and YC are really cute together.

The premise of being able to see smells may not be quite as far-fetched as it seems: I've never heard of that particular ability, but there are plenty of weird cross-sensory phenomena that exist, known as "synesthesia". According to Wikipedia, "Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory
or cognitive pathway".

I used to be allergic of Shin Se Kyung but this drama changed my mind. I think she really meant to be in a romcom drama. When I read the drama synopsis a while back ago, I thought Yoochun will be stiff like a robot in this show but glad he didn't! He is able to convincingly playing as emotionless person while accidentally being funny as well. So far, the drama is refreshing like a spring breeze.
Can't wait for next Wed!

Just because Mu-gak doesn't feel pain doesn't mean he should be actively hurting himself with things like scalding coffee. I know it's a running gag, but I fully expect him to take a gulp of coffee at some point and start leaking from his neck.

I'm also pleasantly surprised by the show so far, but I do think it's a bit difficult to follow sometimes because it does *really* fast camera cuts to new scenes with no setup. I didn't realize there were two girls with the same name until like the third time I rewatched that scene, and the scuba diver that showed up briefly didn't click until I watched the next episode.

Thanks for the recap of Girl Who Sees Smells LollyPip. I hope you continue to recap it. Really enjoyed episodes 1 & 2. Laughed out loud a couple of times too. It's good to see Park Yoo-Chun back in kdramaland again.

Before you're recap of GWSS today, I was determined to post on Friday's OT that I will be the first to eat my words and give credit to Shin Se-Kyung for how good she's doing here and for how much she has improved. After her performance in When A Man Loves, it was hard to see this happening or being the case anytime soon. There were hints of her actually improving in her acting in Blade/Iron Man. (For the record, Blade/Iron Man grew on me...I liked it...and was disappointed that due to its episode reduction viewers were robbed of the whole story/plot playing out and the complete vision/version by writer Kim Kyu-Wan.)

It's good to see Song Jong-Ho too. Would love to see him paired again with Kang Byul - preferably romantically (**wink wink**Red Demon).

So far the only pet peeves I have with GWSS are:
(1) The workplace violence directed at Choi Moo-Gak from his Crime Squad Chief (played by Lee Won-Jong) and the other 2 Detectives. It needs to stop pronto!
(2) Please spare us...not another kdrama series with keystone cops.

On LollyPip's comment that Shin Se Kyung is more suited for comedy than serious roles, I watched her in Tree with Deep Roots and found her quite good. So maybe her panned performances in her later roles could be due to poor directing and writing, and she should consider the credentials of the director before accepting serious roles in future.

On Yoochun, this is the first time I watched him in anything, and he gives off an every man vibe - just average. But he does seem to have a talent for comedy or gag - just watch out for ep2!

Because both Moogak & Cho Rim in this show are indeed just an average person. They aren't wealthy & not particulary excel in anything, they just low rank cop officer & aspiring gag woman. Thank God for no chaebol-fall in love-with poor woman plot in this drama. I can't stand that recycle plot

I agree with you -- nothing could have made me finish watching When a Man Loves -- I hated the script after about episode 3 and felt sorry for SSK having to play a such a badly conceived character. I didn't like Blade Man either but I stuck it through about 10 episodes because she had real charm and warmth in that one, her character made sense dramatically and comedically, and she committed to it.

I'm glad she finally seems to have met with a script and a co-star that let her reveal more of her funny/charming side. She and Yoochun have a really nice vibe together.

Thanks for the recap. As someone who has seen some of SSK's early work, she's not bad at all. I personally think the main issue is bad writing & directing, it's no coincidence the dramas use as evidence of her terrible acting also happen to be 2 of the worst dramas I have seen. However, the PD said he doesn't know why anyone would cast someone like her in serious roles when she's more suited for comedies. The webtoon writer even praise her casting, saying she's perfect. I hope her agency picks rom coms from now on for her, she's really funny in this one.

Just dropping by to say I watched this series and so far liked it. I'm glad that I first knowing Shin Se Kyung in Tree with Deep Root, because I really like her there. And I didn't watch her in anything after that. So, my opinion about her still leaning to liking her. Good for me. :)

I'm not Yoochun's fan, but I found this couple so cute and suitable for each other. Their chemistry click. I'm happy because of that.

I love the chemistry between the leads and I hate to admit it but I love Shin Se Kyung here... This drama suits her! I'm glad I gave it a chance and I hope I'm here for the entire ride!! Fighting!

who else had a serious KMHM flashback with the car chase and her screaming? I did...

it kind of has a similar vibe in the sense that something bad happened in the past, but the show shifts to a quirky action.

I am interested... it prob needs some time to reach a smooth flow, but Yoochuns´ pain-indifferent character is really intriguing and something totally new. and the fact he eats like a bear and perhaps looks like a bear a little too...

the one thing I am worried about is that this father always dies everywhere. could they please not do anything to him here? Please?

Yes, please don't let good father ahjusshi die, for the love of all that's good. For once, can't he live happily?

Also, now you've put the idea of Bear-chun in my head and it can't be unput hahaha. Tbh, when I saw wolfing down all that food I actually felt like some motherly instinct to tell him to slow down and eat properly, which is something I haven't felt for a drama character in a long time. Like, seriously, the way he eats is so gross. I do appreciate how Yoochun doesn't care how unglam he looks though hahaha.

And I do love Shin Se-kyung in this, she's totally adorbs and normal and if she existed in real life I would love to be her friend haha. I do hope she won't lose her bubbly and positive personality when the memories of her past resurface, because although it's only two episodes in I'm already rooting for her happy ending.

Here's to hoping this drama sticks through! I'll just start praying really hard. . .

They have good chemistry and I've never thought Shin Se-kyung was the worst, largely thanks to Tree with Deep Roots. I actually feel the opposite from you, Lollypip - she's better in the more 'serious' scenes (like her first scene with the killer as he approaches her) than the comedic ones. She would do better to tone down the Han Ga-in-esque eye-widening and occasional overly bright line delivery, but she's fine for the most part. And his stoic-ness serves as a good foil to her without making him look wooden (there is a difference!)

I get that Moo-gak's sister got killed because of the coincidence of being a student with the same name brought into a hospital for a motor vehicle injury that night, but didn't the killer get a very close up look at Eun-seol/Cho-rim's face when he tried to, you know, kill her? Even if it was dark the room was partially illuminated. Unless he slit Moo-gak's sister's throat without looking at her face first.

PS: the smell visualisations are the prettiest.

I said most of what I want to say about week one in my open thread comment but something I forgot.

I'm not sure why the killer killed Mu-gak's sister. He was looking right at her face, they showed the entryway light on, so it wasn't just lit so we can see, he should know exactly what she looks like. Did he kill before he looked and not even confirm, am I being too analytical of a drama?

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, let's try to reconstruct his murder:

He has seen her face, sure, and he knows she will be brought to some hospital after the car crash, but he is not running around in all hospitals checking all patient's faces.

Instead, being a doctor, he might check the emergency logistics to find out where a patient with a certain name has been taken (and it is totally possible that neither he nor the operator notices that there are two patients with the same name that day).

He then goes to that hospital, tries to find out the bed of the patient discretely and goes there to kill her. The idea that TWO patients, both of same age and gender, with the same name are in the same hospital at the same time, does never occur to him. It's very unlikely in the first place.

He finds her bed, without any intent to actually confirm her identity, and kills her.
Now it might be a stretch to think that he never saw her face while killing her, but it's not entirely impossible. If she was conscious, he needed to avoid her to see him, thus he might not have seen her face either before/while he cut her (and he might have left as soon as possible afterwards). If she was unconscious, she might have slept in a position that didn't allow him to see her face.

0

Required fields are marked *

I also think he never saw the face when he killed Mu-gak's sister... Proof is his surprised face when he saw Choi Eun Seol again.. His face was like "WTF is this girl doing here? I killed her already or did I not?" and he was stalking her looking for signs if she remembered anything and maybe wondering if he committed a mistake.

0

She was on her side when Mu Gak found her, so maybe she was asleep in the same position when the killer came and he just checked the name on the chart and slit her throat while she was asleep.

I'm so glad that DB decide to recap this drama..im now head over hill about this drama. I have watch both episode a few times act..for me the 1st ep do not really grab me but the 2ep sold to me 100%.

About why the killer mistaken kill Moogak sister, I think cause there is 2 killer..the one who kill Chorim parents maybe somebodyelse.. the doctor was his partner..so the killer told the docter to kill witness name Choi EunSol. And cuincedently there is 2 EunSol at the hospital at the time. So inocent Moogak sister been kill cruelly.

And for those who dont like the head department and detective part..im really enjoy their part cause they are too funny. And this is romcom..I think we cant expect to be given really serious and intelegent police..

I noticed Yoochun is sort of awkward with Shin Se Kyung while she's doing her best to work off of him. I'm more impressed with her so far (although she opens her eyes widely a bit much). She was soooo cute in episode 2, she's definitely my favorite part of the drama right now.

I'm not really feeling the couple or any sort of chemistry but I love how breezy and cutesy the drama can be. That includes the CGI for the visual odors.

Well, it's much easier, especially for an actress known for her big acting, to play a comic-booky over-emoting character than to play a ("biochemically") stoic character who is still kind of interesting.

As far as couple chemistry goes, well, there hasn't been much substance in that department so far in the first place. Which is good. Setting up the show is much more important than that.

I don't mean romantic chemistry, more like how well they play off each other in scenes. I'm just the type that can't help looking closely at non verbal expressions/movements and Yoochun does seem genuinely awkward around her in some moments. It's just my perception that I can't unsee at this point but it's not that big of a deal right now since like you said the story is still being setup.

I can see them having plenty of romantic chemistry when the time comes though, I saw glimpses of it in the trailers.

Well, I'm still not completely happy with them. They have that kind of "genre-gap" with their very different acting styles. A little bit like Lee Jonk-suk and Park Shin-hye in Pinocchio. It bothers me a little less here insofar as it suits the characters a bit more.

[SPOILERS]
Never was really fan of both the actors esp. SSK but she did change my view after I watched Tazza 2 a week back and then I saw this drama because I had nothing much to do.

The drama is certainly very entertaining, I loved the first 2 episodes though I felt few of the scenes in Ep. 2 is too stretchy and unnecessary esp. when he is testing her gift.

SSK did a good job but her comedy is not good but I like her earnest character. Mickey is so funny and I didn't realize he could be so good in gag acting!
I can certainly see a bit of discomfort from Mickey's side when he is acting opposite her. esp. in the restaurant scenes, it seems as if he will break into a laugh...

The drama is cute but predictable... so far... I am now eagerly waiting for Ep. 3 (and the rest) and hope it is as fast paced as Ep.1 and not slow as Ep.2.

I saw Tazza 2 about 1 month ago for Honey Lee after i enjoyed watching her iin Modern Farmers but came away like T.O.P and SSK in it too. I first saw SSK in Fashion King and that was very unfortunate. I saw a few episodes of Iron/Blade Man and thought her character was quite funny but i dropped the show as i could NOT get into the plot. I was very leery of this drama when i first read about it as i thought that it was going down the same path as Iron/Blade Man but thank goodness i was proved wrong. The CGI special affects were effectively used to show her sensory abnormality and her naive but cherry attitude draws one in and the murder mystery chilling. That scene where Murderer was in her house reminded me so much of the similar scene in You're All Surrounded.

but i still dont understand how can he kill the wrong person he clearly knew the face of his target.

Is anyone else slightly bothered by the Detective lying to her and tricking her into thinking he's her father? It's one thing to involve some sort of witness protection, but that's really psychologically damaging. She basically is going to form a new family and if she gets her memories back that's a lie that can do some serious emotional damage. It's one thing if he said he was somehow related, distantly, but....no, it felt wrong to me. Plus it forces hugs and an intimacy level with a stranger that she probably never would have chosen for herself. :(

---
I'm just putting that first because I really am enjoying this show but my praises will blend in with everyone else here. I'm actually not at all familiar with the actress and had forgotten she was someone everyone had complained about. So far, so good for me although it will be interesting when she actually has to face something emotional or serious (which will inevitably happen). I think the two leads though are a lot of fun. I would never call Yoochun the best actor (good, just not the best), but he's super endearing and I've liked him in everything I've seen him in. This character especially seems to suit him.

It was a girl of the right age with the same who was there because of a vehicular accident (the sister was a bus and the main girl a car but it's probably listed the same way). He did recognise her in an instant three years later though. Which means he had a very precise notion of how she (esp. her face) looks like.

But I agree that it was not necessary for him to check/verify her face before he killed her in the hospital. What are the odds that there is another girl of the same age, with the same name in the same hospital after a traffic accident? Virtually zero.

0

Hmm.. "..why does the doctor know how she looks like?"
Instinct, maybe? :p
Idk! It's just my silly guess, judging by the silhouette of the murderer at Chorim's house, lol

Guess this is also what makes watching a series interesting, when everybody starts to come out with their own interpretation of what they've watched and we see who got it right come finale :)

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

I'm watching this for Chunnie and so glad SSK fits her role here. Really enjoyed the first ep. and I like the way the CG is done for the visual smells. Great interactions between the leads already and would be interesting to see how things play out as Mu Gak rediscovers his emotions & sensations and Cho Rim her memories. ^^

Different and refreshing, that's all I can say, two thumbs up!

The scene where Chorim knocks Mugak off his bike, I was like OUCH OUCH!! Mugak dude, stop using your hand will ya? Something is obviously dislocated somewhere, call an ambulance, someone! Some brilliant acting, right there.

So the killer seemed to recognise Cho-rim/Eun-Seol. But he didn't realise that when he killed Mu-gak's sister? Then did he really kill her because he thought she was the Choi Eun-seol that got into the accident? (I'm probably just over-thinking things, but I just thought it's interesting that the drama makes us assume that dongsaeng Eun-seol got killed because she had the same name, while it might not be the reason - but again, it probably is because of that reason anyway).

Anyway, I liked the first two episodes.

She wasn't killed just for the same name. She also was in the same hospital with a similar injury in the same night.

Hm true. But still, she looked different.

I am thinking that the killer probably mistook their identities because it was a darkened house, but there were street lights on the road so he must have seen her face right? Anyway I'll go with the mistaken identity theme and see here it leads.

Yes, but it wasn't necessary for him to verify her face at all. If he found out which bed she was supposed to be in and then killed the patient in that bed without any further checking, he would still be convinced that he killed the right person.

It's still a bit unlikely that he actually killed her without seeing her face at all, by chance, pre- or post-murder, but not impossible, especially considering that he had to act fast and avoid being seen by other people.

Quite honestly, there are so many things that are extremely unrealistic or nigh impossible in these shows, I'm giving this one a pass.
