Casting complete for undercover cop drama Hidden Identity
by javabeans
Casting is finalized on tvN’s upcoming undercover-cop drama, whose title is now Hidden: Hidden Identity (I swear it sounds less redundant in Korean — still a bit redundant, just not that bad), which comes from the director of OCN’s gritty Bad Guys. Park Sung-woong (Fatal Encounter, She Is Wow) and Kim Bum (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi) were already attached; now joining the team are Yoon So-yi (IRIS 2, Color of Woman) and Lee Won-jong (Secret Door, Empress Ki). So far, so good.
The show focuses around a secret investigative police team, and sounds like a cross between a small, nimble Scooby gang and a slick black ops unit. Their methods include wiretapping, communications monitoring, and deep-cover infiltration, and they’ll “cross the legal line” (what a nice euphemism for breaking the law) to get at their goals. Now that I like, since the bureaucracy of police organizations can be so frustrating (to the cops, naturally, but also to us viewers) and sometimes you just want the good guys to sneak in there and get ‘er done. Lots of room for gray areas and blurred lines, which on a dramatic front is a lot more interesting too.
Kim Bum’s character is described as a “human weapon” — that’s an image that corresponds with his background as both a SEAL and a SWAT member before joining this undercover team, and comes about after his girlfriend dies in a case related to something called Ghost. He embarks on a revenge mission and pursues his targets doggedly, picking up the nickname Mad Dog in the process. It’s a turnaround from Kim Bum’s usual gentler image, but one I’m looking forward to.
Park Sung-woong will be the team’s super-perceptive leader who is granted permission to form this investigation team in the first place, and he takes his responsibility seriously, believing that if something goes awry, he’ll bear the burden himself. It’s another image turnaround, since Park so often plays dark villains (and with such aplomb) that I’m happy to see him in the role of principled leader.
Yoon So-yi takes on a “multiplayer” character with particular skills in disguise and collecting information. She’s also deft at psychoanalysis and martial arts. Lee Won-jong, meanwhile, plays to his image to a tee as the well-informed guy with the shady back-alley connections. He’s “a better scammer than a real scammer” with a sly personality and a talent for disguises.
Hidden: Hidden Identity will air on tvN as a Monday-Tuesday drama premiering in June.

I loved Bad Guys, so I am really looking forward to this show, and the semester will be over so this will be a non-guilt watch.

One of my wishes this year was to see Kim Bum again in a kdrama, so wish granted, can't ask for anything more, maybe for the show to be good would be a bonus but hey, I watched Jekyll, Hide and me just for Hyun Bin so, it can't be that bad.

So it's the same as Bad Guys, only that instead of criminals we have cops who are willing to act like criminals to get the job done. They even have the "Mad Dog" nickname here too. Or am I thinking of Gap dong? Anyway, this can be either as impressive as Bad Guys or a total flop, but I'll give it a shot. Plus I can't miss seeing Kim Bum on my screen again.

I love the cast. People get their pretty boy, but he can also act and has done some interesting works, so he has more than looks to offer.
We also get a lady I really like. Miss Yoon knows her action and I hope her character is a cool, but not cold one. 'Bad Guys' did not really treat its ladies well, a few exceptions aside, so please deliver on your female lead this time, folks. And I need therapy over her after 'IRIS2' anyway.
And of course the awesome ajeossi duo. OCN is like an ajeossi safe haven, where you can be more than someone's dad, a villainous politician or "veteran".
Do want. I am very looking forward to this.

This really is an awesome cast.
YSY should be a bigger star than she is - prefer when she plays a gal w/ some "atttitude" rather than the "nice" girl.

The characters sound intriguing. Gotta give this show a shot. I like crime/cop shows.
I cannot remember Yoon So-yi in IRIS 2. Heck, I can barely remember IRIS 2 at all, except the fact that it wasn't good. Anyway, I hope the female characters in Hidden Identity have better, more impressive roles than the one in Bad Cop.

She was the North Korean sidekick to the split personality villain who could not decide between feeling sorry for killing someone's mother and nuking the South.
She barely spoke and was basically hired to look mean and hit people. So yep. Not the most memorable character and a shame, given its actress.
I hope she plays someone with an actual personality here. Her character sounds like a capable foxy lady.

*throws confetti* YAAASSSSS!!!!!!!! That squealing sound you hear is for Park Sung Woong but the non-fangirl in me is proud that the rest of the lineup is good too. Although the only thing I've seen Yoon So-yi in is Color of a Woman which I never finished. As Orion said, I do hope this drama does better for its ladies than Bad Guys, but given Kim Yumi's character from the writer's Heartless City, I'm hopeful. Nice to see Lee Wong-jung again since I haven't finished his last few projects. Same for Kim Bum (on a shallow note black ops means he won't have Jesus hair right?)

The writer is sadly not the 'Heartless City' one. That's for the OCN show courting Lee Si Yeong, 'My Beautiful Bride'.
This one is written by a Kang Hyeon Seong, according to Korean news and Daum/Naver. I think they co-wrote 'Chosun Police' season 3, if one piece I read was right and it's the same person.
