So Ji-sub makes surprise cameo in Sado as King Jeongjo
by javabeans
A cameo by So Ji-sub in the upcoming sageuk film Sado — starring Yoo Ah-in as the tragic crown prince and Song Kang-ho as the exacting father who ordered him to his death, King Yeongjo — was meant to be a surprise and had been accordingly kept hush-hush all through its planning and filming. But news was leaked in advance of the movie’s premiere telling of So Ji-sub’s involvement, and a source with the film production then confirmed that it was true.
So Ji-sub’s brief appearance comes as King Jeongjo, the son of Sado and grandson of Yeongjo, who went on to become one of Joseon’s greatest kings. (Ever-popular as a drama and film character, Jeongjo was portrayed recently by Hyun Bin in Fatal Encounter aka King’s Wrath, as well as by Jo Sung-ha in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Bae Soo-bin in Painter of the Wind, Hong Jong-hyun in Warrior Baek Dong-soo, and Lee Seo-jin in Yi San.) A rep with the film production expressed chagrin over the leak, because they’d wanted So Ji-sub’s cameo to be a fun surprise for moviegoers.
Part of me thinks it’s too bad to have the moment of discovery spoiled in advance for audiences, but the skeptical half thinks it’s awfully convenient to tease the info as a promotional move, since having So Ji-sub in your movie is a card that seems too valuable to waste. Even if the role is reportedly small and only comes toward the end of the film; it’s the reason why the producers and So Ji-sub had both agreed not to emphasize his casting. So’s rep said, “It would have been fun to surprise viewers who should have watched without knowing, so it’s a bit disappointing [to reveal it].”
Sado, which comes from acclaimed director Lee Jun-ik (The King and the Clown, Radio Star, The Unjust, Hope), will release later this year.

If his fans did not know he was in the movie and were not huges fans of the rest of the cast, then they might not go. At least they know he is in it for a short time and know it is probably in the beginning and the rest of the movie will air without him. No one should feel slighted or disappointed because they know what to expect from him.
In my youth, there were very specific stars, I would like to see in a movie. Those stars were always in romance movies. They did not act then I would go to the horror movies.

The other thing is, I hate to tell you the number of years that have past but I remember those all important stars by name and their movies. Sometime coming home from work now, I will run those movies through my mind. Some of those actors are deceased now or very old but am clueless, as to wether their acting was any good. All I remember, is seeing those movies over and over again because I felt in love with them. Now, I am older and miss the innocents of those days.

Well, it can only be a surprise for so long. I bet those watching the prescreening or the movie on opening day will probably reveal the secret anyways. It would be a nice surprise but maybe they can rope more people to watch it. SJS cameo is pretty awesome.
Come back with another drama soon please!! :)

I don't know if that is a spoiler to know he has a cameo.
It's kinduv more a spoiler than the character has screen time, since it lets us know a little where the story is going to end up. Sounds like a silver lining in an awfully horrible heavy dark and painful cloud of history.

I hope he takes a full-length role in something soon, I loved Master's Sun and would love to see him in another drama.
But yay to this! And isn't it his first sageuk role in over a decade?

Oh yeah he was in that time travelling saeguk before time travelling dramas were cool. Few years ago I watched every drama he was in, but that drama had way too many episodes I believe.
So yay for this news. xD

Reminds me of Kim Soo Hyun's cameo in Miss Granny, except that one was kept hush-hush, and even the early moviegoers managed to keep it mum, so much that it was a huge but pleasant surprise to the others who watched a bit late. :D

So Ji Sub is THE KING!!
Okay, I haven't watched So Ji Sub on movies lately so this one is the pleasant news for me.
The casts are really talented though, Song Kang Ho, Yoo Ah In and Moon Geun Young. Hope it does well in box office!!

I'm really looking forward to this film, if only for the director. The talented cast is a great bonus though.
