School 2015: Lee Yubi out, Kim So-hyun in?

Casting changes are afoot for KBS’s coming-of-age drama Who Are You–School 2015: Both Lee Yubi (Pinocchio) and Kang Min-hyuk (Heirs) declined the leading roles that they were offered, so the search continues for the next fresh-faced stars to headline the drama about high school students and their real-world problems. The news gets better though, because the offer has now gone out to Kim So-hyun (Reset) to star.

Okay, I thought I’d be sad if Lee Yubi ended up passing on School, but not if Kim So-hyun is being courted instead. I like that they’re aging down to younger leads, especially since the talent is there. Not only is Kim So-hyun a high-schooler in real life, but I actually like her more, and I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for her to get the big starring role that she deserves. I’ve seen Kim So-hyun be vulnerable, sassy, charming, AND badass, and she’s just getting started.

It’s been confirmed that School 2015 will be a mystery about a set of twins, and if she signs on, Kim So-hyun will play both characters. One twin is the It Girl at a Gangnam high school, and she goes missing. The other twin transfers there and her life changes completely. Now the Who Are You part of the title makes more sense — the drama will be about the twins’ swapped fates, and the mystery of what happened to the missing twin who returns with no memories.

Now that we know it’s a leading lady twofer, I’m doubly excited for Kim So-hyun to headline her first big primetime series with this drama. There must be a change in the tide, because she and her fellow child stars will all be populating the halls of Dramaland High in leading roles at the same time (though sadly all in different dramas): Kim Yoo-jung is currently being bullied in Angry Mom, and Yeo Jin-gu will be falling for a vampire in Orange Marmalade. Sniff, sniff… they all grow up so fast!

Who Are You–School 2015 follows Blood on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in late April.

Nooooo!!

I wanted Lee Yubi and Kang Min-hyuk to play in it so badly!!! Gosh. I'll get over it but I would over but it's too bad really.
On the other hand I'd be happy for Kim So-hyun if she confirms. Let's see who else they'll cast

i like Lee Yoo Bi, her acting is good but she always play a second lead. But I am not so sad that Kim So Hyun will replace her, love her too...

wish that Lee Yoo Bi get a main lead as an adult, she's good especially in Gumiho. that i stop watching at episode 13 because her screen reduce and the writer doesn't improve her character well :(

agree on rather see LYB playing in adult role.
but, KSH to play as the lead in School 2015 is rather disappointing to me. i don't dislike her, but i watched her in Suspicious Housekeeper and still couldn't see her yet as main lead material.
but then again, in Reset she seems garnering good review (i don't watch it), so again agree with you @aro, hopefully this drama is not a mess eventhough i inclined to skip it. (while i loove School 2013) snif.

Well the production team can't do anything if the actors decline the role... They must have casted actors based on who they thought would be best as well, at first. But sometimes you get even better people! (Such as in Kill Me Heal Me.)

Isn't it kinda weird that people are declining these roles when the past Schools are known for turning actors/actresses into big stars?
Oh well. Whatevs. I really like Kim So-Hyun so hope she accepts.

I think it's cause it's now an FNC produced drama so they probably don't have a much faith in it as they did before.. Look at SM To the beautiful you & Heading to the Ground they were all failures! Only JYPs Dream high did well but the sequel failed in the end.

I'm not surprised, idol agencies producing dramas rarely goes well in terms of quality unless they lucked into a really good scriptwriter.

And if push comes to shove, Kim So-hyun has less to lose from starring in one failed drama at this stage in her career than Lee Yubi - even if it does flop, she's popular enough that she'll remain a top contender for young lead roles for years to come. Lee Yubi, unfortunately, does not have that leeway.

Yeah and that's why when I saw the original screenwriter for 'Dream High' wasn't returning, I knew 'Dream High 2' would flop before it even aired. That writer and KSH were the saving grace of 'Dream High'. As soon it was announced she was working on IHYV I knew it would be good. Now she also has 'Pinocchio' under her belt. FNC better get a solid writer and cast if they want this drama to have any chance of succeeding. I really don't want this turning into 'Heirs' or 'Dream high 2'.

I cannot really follow you. Who are you talking about?

Kim So-hyun didn't appear in Dream High (and neither did Lee Yu-bi). So-hyun did appear in IHYV, but not in Pinocchio (but Lee Yu-bi did). I don't think that So-hyun's rather minor contribution to IHYV had much of an effect on the success (commercially or artistically) of the show.

I have no doubts in her acting talent . but I'm kind of worried about the script since both leads decided to decline it. It would be Bette for her to not take the role if the script is bad because if the drama quality is low it's going to put a huge burden on a 15 year old girl:(

With that being said if she accepts I hope they get Kwak Do YEong. He's from FNC and only two years older than KSH so it would make sense . and he's been naming KSH as his ideal type on different variety shows so it would be cute for them to be leads :)

I'd argue that at this stage in her career, Kim So-hyun is probably the one actress who is least likely to be affected by a not-such-a-hit drama.

She's made enough of a name that it will be more significant that she's finally moving into lead role territory on MBC/KBS/SBS level networks than what the drama actually is, and even if the drama does flop the blame can't be pinned on her because she's so young. It was the same with Kim Yoo-jung and Secret Door.

At this point, I think everyone can agree that Kim So Hyun and Kim Yoo Jung are the cream of the crop when it comes to teen actresses. Even with bad scripts, those two still put out great performances. I think they are hoping that Kim So Hyun will anchor that drama acting-wise like how Kim Soo Hyun anchored Dream High especially if they are gonna litter the drama with inexperienced FNC idol-actors.

The casting round-abouts are seriously interesting even if heartbreaks for some are unavoidable.

I like this change a lot personally, but I just hope FNC doesn't try to shove in one of their horrible idols actors instead of Kang Min-hyuk. I don't quite buy the excuse on why he declined and while I didn't like the first choice, itcame from unfamiliarity for the most part of what he's capable of. If instead, they pick someone like Jung Yong-hwa, I'd really feel upset for Kim So-hyun. If only Yeo Jin-gu was free...

FNC actually has one idol-actor that better in acting than minhyuk. Kwak Dongyeun actually singer trainee in FNC, but he has already debut as an actor. He won award as best young actor twice in 2012 and 2014.

He more fit to play high schooler than Minhyuk, he is 1997-er. There is possibility (and I'm hoping so) that Minhyuk maybe turn down the offer to give the opportunity to one of his mentee in FNC, Kwak Dongyeon.

I feel bad for saying it because KSH is really talented, seems to have a good head on her shoulders and has appeared in some of my favourite shows, but i'm kind of bored of seeing her (seemingly) appearing in everything. As great as she is i am sure there are other actresses her age that they could cast. But that's more my issue with casting directors. I think KSH will do great in this.

i'm strongly against an idols in the school series. i know there are some good idol actors out there, but i don't think they can portray the emotions as strongly as an actual actor. honestly, i'm glad minhyuk is out bc his past acting never stuck me as strong. He's great for the typical, best friend with no real background or plot, but for a deep character I can't see him doing it. I'm thinking about Jong Suk and Woo bin in the last series and using them as a standard and I honestly don't believe that Minhyuk could reach that level of acting. i really want them to a use a young actor from any of the Drama Specials bc a lot of superbly talented actors come from those. I'm 100% sure that they can find a young male actors, good enough to play the lead roles that ISN'T an idol

I think the real problem is that with some exceptions, the idol actors who get offered roles get them on the basis of popularity only, with talent coming a long way last as a requirement. So not only do they block actual actors from taking the role, they also block idol actors who are talented but don't belong to a popular group/powerful agency. Sometimes we're lucky and we get a Sooyoung/Lee Joon/Im Shi-wan/Uee/Yoon Doo-joon type of talent, but most of the time....no.

But I agree that the casting of the School series should not be focused on idols. It's hypocritical to hype this franchise as the breeding ground of all these A-listers in their rookie days and then fill it with some kids whose acting is passable at best, just because they are idols.

and I agree they should mine the Drama Specials for actors, they used to do that earlier and actually turned up some very good actors.

Lee Joon actually trained as an actor before becoming an idol, but his agency decided to stick him in a band b/c they thought he wasn't talented enough as an actor, which for me is funny since he's far more talented as an actor than as a singer.

yeah and now he's ditched his idol group and is doing really well in Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Almost all the idol actors named above as good ones didn't take the shortcuts to getting their roles - they did supporting roles, smaller roles, less high-profile projects to start out with. Just like actual actors. I can respect that approach way more than some idol whose agency buys an entire drama for them to star in without bothering to see whether they're capable of carrying the lead role.

Well, so you should be against model turned actors too? They use their looks to go into acting, and just like idols turned actors, most are bad. Real actors are still not getting their chances because of them.

In school 2013 they picked two model turned actors: LJS and KW. The female lead was an actress but she got pushed aside for bromance love line because their fans didn't want her there. I felt bad she got so little screen time for a lead.

0

Required fields are marked *

@liz - that logic against model-turned-actors doesn't hold, because not a single one of them got to leading man status in a drama without going through multiple supporting roles first. Unlike the usual breed of idol actors who just get their roles handed to them on a plate by their agencies (and note that the idols who have won acting acclaim are almost always the ones who've started out in supporting roles first.....like actual actors).

Even Ahn Jae-hyun, star of the much-mocked Blood, did a couple of smaller roles before getting that one.

This so much! I've even read a recent article where it said a Winner member already got a lead role. Granted, it's a web drama, but still, lead role with no acting training whatsoever is just too much. If rookie idols get the lead parts, then why train actors anymore?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't even know what Winner is, but I'm facepalming already. At least it's just a web drama, which is modest compared to what FNC is trying to do here.

Idol fans are very fond of coming here and saying "but idol careers are short, what are they supposed to do for a living?"

How about they try to hack it in music, for starters. I don't see why the acting industry has to support music industry wannabes who lack the talent to make it in that field and whose agencies think acting is just a matter of putting on some makeup and saying lines in front of a camera.

0

Idols are trained in acting, just as they're trained in everything else. A lot of idols actually join idol groups just so they can get into acting faster. However, idol companies aren't doing a very good job of getting the talented ones casted which is why we have idols like Suzy getting main roles over more talented rookie actors.

Winner's Taehyun got cast in a web drama, which is not a big 3 or cable drama, so I don't see a problem with it. I think a web drama is a perfect place to start off.

0

@girlatsea they are trained in acting? Doesn't seem like it based on the standard of their performances. And anyway this claim of training in acting is false, look at people like Suzy who get cast with none. Or Eunji (who at least auditioned for her role, her agency didn't buy it for her)

But then most idols are shit at singing too which is supposed to be their main job and a thing that they all go into training for. Anything goes as long as you have a pretty face, talent strictly optional.

0

but model turned actors aren't usually casted based on their popularity bc they're usually not that well known in the entertainment industry. models go on runways and photoshoots, but they don't become household names or appear on television. and in the past model actors have proven to be good actors, so i have no problem with model turned actors. i have a problem with some idols only being casted because they're trending and producers want to bring in more viewers by using a familiar face. some idols are good, but not all, majority are pretty 2D. For a show that deals with some pretty big social issues i'd want actual actors and not a flat idol who's only there bc they're popular or bc FNC wants to cast inside the company.

And about your comment on KWB and LJS, they both did a bunch of minor acting roles and stared in Drama Specials so there is proof that they can play serious roles with more emotional baggage unlike the typical girl/boy next door. i have no issue with Minhyuk and i'm a fan of CN Blue myself, but school is not a drama that should be distracted by using popular faces and focus on the acting.

The main focus of 2013, was the bromance, that's why the girl got pushed aside. i actually was glad she got pushed aside bc the writers chose to opt out of the typical, cliche school romance. they went for showing friends and honestly, the same thing is going to happen in this instalment. it's going to focus on the two girls and the male lead, whoever it might be, will be second fiddle.

At the end of the day, i don't care if they're casted for their looks, but they need to be GOOD actors. School 2013 had good actors and that's what i expect this time around. I don't believe that idol actors will be suited for this series.

I couldn't agree more. The actors they cast have to be good, as in legitimately good. This is not a drama where you can pick leads on the basis of 'idol status first, acting ability last' and expect it to work.

Required fields are marked *

It doesn't matter if it's an idol-actor or a model-actor or a comedian-actor, I think the resentment comes from anyone having nothing under their belt to getting lead roles as their very first or even second foray into acting. Even with pure actors, eyebrows get raised when someone out of nowhere suddenly headlines a drama. Unfortunately for idol-actors, they have done this too much and the results have been bad for the most part (Suzy, Sulli, Krystal, L etc.).

@Aigooo - yeah, lack of credentials combined with repeated poor performances, while their fans have the nerve to go "but he/she is learning! And improving! Give them a chance!", no matter how terrible the "improved" performance is.

Lead roles in dramas are not the place to be "learning" how to act. If someone can't act already, they shouldn't be offered those jobs. And if they still suck at acting even after multiple projects, then they probably shouldn't be acting at all.

Once in a blue moon, an unknown actor without any credentials is cast for a (somewhat) major role and rocks it quite well. See Han Groo or Tang Wei for example.

Required fields are marked *

Han Groo made her debut in a 3 episode miniseries on a minor cable channel, after extensive training and auditions. It's not nearly the same as scoring a lead role on the Big 3, which she is only starting to work her way up to now (assuming she takes the vampire scholar role offer).

0

Tang Wei started in many productions as well we studied at acting school before Lust, Caution. Yes, she was unknown actress before L,C but she was not without any credentials

0

@pogo

As far as I know, it was "K" was Han Groo's first acting role on television and it was the lead role. I'd say that's quite a way to debut.

@j2hr

No credentials is wrong, of course, and in most cases it is also wrong for idol actors (most of them have some - if obscure - acting experience before they are put into dramas). But the jump from smaller roles on local Chinese TV to an Ang Lee feature film lead role is seriously huge.

0

I am not saying that it's 100% bad. We do get gems here and there like Jung Eun Ji and Seo In Guk but the track record by idols doing horrible acting heavily outweighs the handful that do well. I just don't like sifting through all the bad ones just to find that one good idol-actor.

Getting a lead role in a Big 3 drama should be the pinnacle of of a good actress/actor's tv career and not some stage to improve one's acting or just increase one's popularity.

0

Han Groo is actually an idol-turned-actress though :P

They're running out of time, they need to lock down a full cast and start filming soon.

I love Kim So-hyun a lot and as an actual high school student and talented actress, she'd be perfect for a lead role in the School franchise. But the whole dead twins angle has me very worried - what's next, a birth secret?

I'd have loved to see Lee Yubi get her first lead role at last, god knows the girl has deserved it for a while, but I hope her agency finds her another good project instead and does not leave her for a year without another acting job like they did after Gu Family Book.

The other thing that has me worried is the agency. I'm not against idols in dramas as long as they can act. Hyoyoung in School 2013 is a good example of one who can, but the FNC idol actors are not exactly of the calibre of Lee Jong-seok or Kim Woo-bin. Except Lee Hong Ki, who was a child actor to begin with.

I would have loved Lee Yubi in this, but I'm loving Kim So Hyun possibly doing this even more. I've always liked it when solid child actors get to play High School roles since those roles often go to actors in their 20s. Kim So Hyun has been amazing in everything I've seen her in so if she tskes on this drama, I hope it's worth her while. I loved Yoo Seung Ho and Go Ah Sung in 'God of Study' and it would be nice to see a repeat of that with this next season of 'School' using talented child actors .

The only thing that concerns me is this makjang sounding plot the writer has come up with. I just really hope this drama doesn't wind up being ridiculous. They have the opportunity to tackle some serious issues pertaining to girls in High School with a female actress as lead and Kim So Hyun has already proven she can handle them. FNC better not make a mess of the 'School' franchise.

Why Everyone keep saying KWB and LJS as a barometer a good model turn actor...?? Thay are a bad example for that group.. Both are just not good enough.. KWB had a cringeworthy performances in Movie The con Artist and LJS is so stiff as an actor.. Lee Soo Hyuk and Sung Joon is a really good example a turned model turn actor who are doing well in terms of development into a real actor. They were pretty bad in their debut, but improve so much after that. KWB and LJS? not so much

While I disagree about Kim Woo-bin, I agree wholeheartedly about Lee Jong-seok. He's one of the reasons I couldn't finish I Hear Your Voice, the other being how incredibly bored I was. Every time he attempted to show anger I wanted to reach into my computer and smack him. He was a little better in what I saw of Pinocchio, which I also dropped because of being bored. Kim Woo-bin is a very good actor in my opinion though and even though I don't like Sung Joon, I have to admit he's very good too.

My fav of the bunch is kim woo bin (i adore his personality and acting wise he's good imo but could get better) followed by ljs but yeah i find lee soo hyuk's acting is sooo good. Exquisite looks too. I wonder why he didn't explode in popularity compared to the former 2. I wish to see him in a more smiley goofy or silly character that will def cement his acting chops. Can't comment on SjJ never seen him acting before.

But like people said in the Kang Minhyuk article, at least LJS and KWB had showed better acting before they were cast in School than Kang Minhyuk has ever shown.

i agree Sung Joon is better but the School 2013 boys still showed at least SOME ability to take on acting roles, they weren't just 'cute background boy'. And lol @the attempts of KMH fans in that post to pretend he's some great actor who they didn't even know was an idol. We are not dumb.

Well, for me both Kim Woo Bin and Lee Jon Suk were mediocre in school 2013... They were just really stiff. Having some good technique without knowing exactly how to potray your own character doesn't make you become a good actor. But bad directing pretty much contribute to that though.

I have watched LJS in Pinocchio, and his performances is pretty much the same... He is just have learn to develop his acting technique more.
