Running Man: Episode 236
by gummimochi
Time to let out the beast in this week’s Manly Man Race where our teams will duke it out to show off their brawn and loyalty. Mostly, I’m excited to see the original idols back in varietyland and ready to bring their A-game to the table.
Who will come out as today’s victors: the Running Man cast who have a formed a strong bond in the past four and a half years, the idols who have been together for over half a decade, or the six who have been through thick and thin for over seventeen years?

EPISODE 236. Broadcast on March 1, 2015.
We begin with an introduction of our three teams in this Manly Man Race: our resident Running Man guys versus Shinhwa (Eric, Min-woo, Jun Jin, Dong-wan, Hye-sung, and Andy) versus ZE:A (Lee Hoo (aka Moon Jun-young), Hwang Kwang-hee, Kim Tae-heon, Kim Dong-joon, Jung Hee-chul, Park Hyung-shik).
Even though the group has been in the biz for 17 years now, the Shinhwa boys can still bust a move. Jun Jin is as hilarious as ever, as evidenced by his suave moment in the sun turned awkward when he discovers that he’s the only one dancing. Hee.
Dong-wan outs himself as the black hole of the group, promising to deliver today anyway. And ha, the cast tries to pull Kwang-hee towards them saying that he belongs with them, the entertainers. When Kwang-soo brings up Hyung-shik’s recently ended drama What’s With This Family, Haha quips (to Kwang-soo), “You ended things with a woman too.”
Aha, so Tae-heon is also a mixed martial arts fighter (but also lost his debut match with a fractured nose, ow), and it takes a minute before the cast realizes that Jun-young is the same idol who took to Twitter to speak about unfair treatment from his agency. (In short, the series of tweets back in September quickly spiraled into a hot-button issue that has since been put to rest.)
Shinhwa’s cool “Sniper” outfits aren’t quite practical as Shinhwa members left and right get tangled up in their own buttons. Then it’s time to hear the rules: our teams will face off in a series of games and try to win the most amount of points by rolling different dice.
Depending on the outcome, it’s possible for the first and second place teams (as well as second and third) to roll the same number. So not only will our teams need to try their best, some of it is up to luck as well.
Today’s MC is none other than our beloved Miss Mung, who directs the teams to their cars before realizing she needs to hitch a ride, too. When the Running Man boys leave her high and dry, she runs to join the ZE:A boys, who are more than happy to have noona riding with them.
And then her former teammate Dong-joon tells the guys to listen up, “All of you be quiet because noona’s going to fall asleep [in the car] soon.” Ahahaha.
The ZE:A boys are the last to arrive at their first mission location and hurriedly get ready in front of their sunbaes. Kwang-hee gets called out for tossing in his shoe lift into his rubber boot before putting it on. Hehe.
Now shivering around the mud pit, our teams will split into three pairs based on ability level (high, mid, and low). Last pair standing wins a point for their team, and the first team to grab two points wins the first mission. The others get upset when Shinhwa places their strongest, Min-woo and Andy, as their “weakest” members, though if you think about it, it’s a pretty strategic choice.
The mid-level pairs are called out first, and Min-woo tells the ZE:A boys to go easy on their sunbaes. But with contenders like Gary, Jae-suk, and Hye-sung, I’m pretty sure the idols will have to be the ones to be careful.
Sure enough, the boys split and the other two teams jump on the opportunity. Jun-young gets pushed out of the pit, and so does Hyung-shik a few moments later. Jae-suk is left outnumbered 2:1 after Gary gets pushed out, and then scares off his pursuers by splashing his own face with muddy water.
As a result, Dong-wan jumps out of the pit, and Hye-sung runs before getting pushed out by a muddy Jae-suk. Kwang-soo jumping into the pit face first doesn’t quite result in the scary mudman effect, but this next battle ought to be good anyway.
I love how Eric oh-so-quietly steps away from the main brawl, then both Dong-joon and Tae-heon hoists Jong-kook up in the air together. Next thing we know, Jong-kook whirls back around to take the boys on, and Kwang-soo is the first one rolled out of the pit.
The remaining four all grab one of Jong-kook’s limbs, but Jong-kook manages to hold his ground. Min-woo steps in as a reporter covering this unbelievable event, and when they all take a quick timeout, Jae-suk says it’s faster to start eliminating each other than Jong-kook.
Jong-kook manages to convince his hoobaes to take the Shinhwa members out first, so while the boys take on Jun Jin, Jong-kook deals with Eric. And then Hye-sung calls out from the sidelines that Jong-kook and Eric should eliminate the young’uns instead. Exhausted, Jong-kook yells, “Are you guys going to keep using me [like this]?”
Desperate, Dong-joon yells, “Hyung, this is the first time [our members] have appeared on variety!” Aw, Eric forms a heart over his head. And Jong-kook decides to sit this one again. So does Eric. Hahaha.
We skip ahead to after Jun Jin is pushed out, and Jong-kook and the ZE:A boys take a breather, completely exhausted. Since this battle is going nowhere, Taek PD issues a two-minute time limit. If both Tae-heon and Dong-joon are left standing afterwards, the win will go to ZE:A.
Oh man, even the cheerleading squad from the sidelines (with chants of “Turbo! Turbo!” and lyrics from ZE:A’s single “Aftermath”) is funny-sad. Soon there’s only 30 seconds remaining and Jong-kook hoists Dong-joon up in the air. But it isn’t enough, and ZE:A picks up the hard-earned point.
After Shinhwa earns another point, the teams are tied at one point each. Eric asks what they gain by winning this game, and when he’s told that they get the best die, he asks again, “Is [winning] that die that great?”
They decide on one final match between two random members from each team: Min-woo and Dong-wan vs. Hyung-shik and Jun-young vs. Haha and Suk-jin. Jae-suk: “We’re done for!”
The Running Man and ZE:A teams form an alliance to take on Shinhwa, and it’s Hyung-shik who makes the first strike at Min-woo. The ZE:A boys work together to push Dong-wan out, then during their attempt to push Min-woo out of the pit, it’s Suk-jin who gets eliminated.
Hyung-shik gets worked up when Haha switches allies, then ultimately chooses to work alone. Watching Haha tackle Jun-young finally makes Hyung-shik yell at his former ally: “Hyung! You can’t be doing that right now!” Omg, the poor kid looks like he’s going to break down in tears at any moment.
Eventually only Haha, Min-woo, and Hyung-shik are left, and they’re so tired that they all grab each other’s faces to remind the other of the alliance they once made. But Hyung-shik gets pushed out anyway.
As Haha gets pushed up into the wall, he uses the momentum to kick off and twirl around to pin Min-woo down. That was cool. Haha then pushes Min-woo out of the pit, giving him and his team the win.
Each team throws their respective dice, and the current scores are as follows: Running Man (100), Shinhwa (70), and ZE:A (50).
Our three teams gather together again at Ewha Women’s University to face off in a test of manners. Each team’s black holes (Kwang-hee, Dong-wan, and Kwang-soo) engage in a round of rock-paper-scissors, and thanks to Kwang-soo, the Running Man Team advances automatically.
In this game of dodgeball, the men must protect their respective queens (a randomly chosen Ewha student) to the end. It’s cute how Shinhwa comes up with their own little cheer for their queen, and Dong-wan explains the rules of the game to her in English. Assuming that the members can take it from here, MC Mung moves on. Ha.
As Shinhwa and ZE:A get ready for their first match, Kwang-hee tells his teammates that they have to protect his face. Min-woo is eliminated in the first few seconds, but then gets hold of the ball from the other side of the court when Hye-sung’s attack falls short.
Distracted by Eric, who makes even the small things look cool, ZE:A’s queen gets hit by the ball, thus ending the match. And then Hee-chul gets scolded for trying to avoid the ball instead of protecting his team’s lady. Jae-suk: “You waited 6 years to be on variety, but you couldn’t last for one second?”
So we head straight for the finals with the Running Man Team vs. Shinhwa. Dong-wan grabs for the ball first, which gets passed around between the members before Andy throws… and it bounces over the line.
Haha grabs at the opportunity to attack Jun Jin, who catches the ball that gets thrown right back at the Running Man Team. But seeing as the Running Man members are doing a good job in protecting their lady, the Shinhwa boys pass around the ball in order to confuse their opponents.
It works, and Jae-suk is eliminated. Kwang-soo tries confusing the Shinhwa team on his own, but eventually the ball finds its way into Jun Jin’s hands. He shoots… and it flies past Suk-jin’s head, taking his hat off with it.
Moments later, the ball rolls out of the court and into Jae-suk’s hands. He eliminates Jun Jin, who immediately gets a chance to attack the Running Man team from the other side of the court. He misses, and a few more throws and eliminations later, Gary goes straight to attack Eric…
… who catches the ball. Nice. Only Gary and Kwang-soo are left to protect their team’s lady, and Jun Jin makes a throw that narrowly avoids the Running Man’s lady but sends a camera to the ground. Whoops.
Jong-kook eliminates Eric, then Andy is taken out not long afterwards. Min-woo and Dong-wan remain to protect their queen, and then a minute later, another one of Jun Jin’s shots hits yet another camera.
Eliminating Dong-wan leaves Min-woo as the lone bodyguard twirling around as the ball flies in different directions. But then Gary catches the ball, leaving his team’s lady in the line of fire. Min-woo extends a hand, but it’s too late.
The ladies throw the dice for their teams, and then it’s time for another score check-in: Running Man (190), Shinhwa (140), and ZE:A (100).
It’s nighttime by the time the teams pull up near the Han River in this last game that will test their loyalty. The rules are simple: the first team to climb up the incline will win, but they’ll need to climb over each other’s shoulders to reach the top.
The teams split and strategize, though it helps little in practice: Kwang-hee yelps in pain when Hyung-shik tries to climb over him, then crumbles before slipping down the slope. It turns out that even if one leans against the incline, the weight can sometimes be too much to bear. Like it is for Suk-jin, whom the team decides wouldn’t be fit for the second to lowest spot.
Then it’s time for the Human Ladder game to begin, and everyone has their game faces on. Each team get three men each on the board rather swiftly, but it isn’t until the fourth climbs up that the ones on the bottom can start to feel the weight.
While the fifth member is still climbing, Dong-joon runs up. But uh oh—the added pressure causes the ladder to crumble, and all the ZE:A boys slide off.
Jun Jin realizes that this gives his team a prime chance to win, so he runs up… but then a weak link in his team’s ladder causes him to slide back down. Unable to hold the weight any longer, the Running Man team slide off, too.
So it’s back to square one for everyone, and the teams work speedily to get four men each on the board. It really does look painful, and soon afterwards, it’s up to Jun Jin, Kwang-hee, and Haha to run up and ring that bell for their teams.
It’s Jun Jin who climbs up the ledge and rings that bell first, but Kwang-hee doesn’t give up, peeling off his gloves and socks to get a better grip. He rings the bell for the ZE:A team whereas the Running Man boys all slide back to the bottom.
Despite coming in last, the Running Man team has still got luck on their side in rolling a 60. ZE:A and Shinhwa both roll decent numbers of 70 and 90 respectively.
But this isn’t the end—our three teams climb onto platforms to await a fate left in Lady Luck’s hands: Ji-hyo’s. Aha, so the third game’s score will either be added or subtracted from the teams’ combined score from the first two games.
Nervous, Haha asks if they can press pause so he can face the possible water punishment in commando. Jun Jin: “Rocks won’t come falling out of this, right?”
Ji-hyo chooses a scroll for each team, and then it’s time to hear the results: ZE:A ends up with a total score of 170, giving them a chance to win if the other two teams are stuck with minus signs.
But the Shinhwa gets their scores added too with a plus sign, leaving them with a score of 230. And now the fate of the Running Man team can go either way.
Taek PD unravels the white scroll Haha didn’t have a good feeling about… which reveals a plus sign, bringing up the winning Running Man Team’s total to 250. Our other two teams receive their watery punishment as the victors revel in their gold.
And aww, everyone celebrates Suk-jin, Gary, and Eric’s birthdays in February, wrapping up this manly man race on a sweet note.

Omg, the show of my dreams. Episode after episode of Running Men vs Shinhwa... ugh I'd tune in every week. They could be crocheting mittens for 60 minutes and I'd watch the hell out of it like an idiot.

Hahahaha this ep sounds like so much fun!
Shinhwa are variety vets and know how to make things interesting, and they take care of their hoobaes too. ZE:A is lucky to be paired with these sunbaes in this ep.
Thanks for the recap, gummi :D

Waiting very patiently for the episode to get translated to English and then again to my native language(!), to set the TV ready for enjoying it with my two little brothers. This is how much they love Shinhwa in running man.
BUT I really hoped it will be just them VS running man casts.

Me too. When I knew not all the members went, I kind of assumed he wouldn't be there. I was so happy they made a fuss about him being the 'SNS guy'. I was worried bad things would happen to him since it's almost impossible in kpop to not come out unscathed from a confrontation with your company. He seemed pretty happy and healthy too.

I am just happy they bring junyoung' s twitter controversy. It is taeheon's match who made junyoung was so upset and went to twitter to tell about unfair treatment they got from their agency. Zea boys are well mannered. Junyoung and hyungshik bowed to shinhwa when one of them said that they are their sunbaes. Junyoungie, this year is the time for you to shine.

ERIC OPPAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I've never actually felt physical jealousy for someone on TV before, but I really really wanted to be in that Julie girl's place. Imagine, you go to study abroad in Seoul... you get to be Shinhwa's Queen. Life is really not fair.
I'm sure I had all sorts of intelligent things to say about this episode, but I may be slipping into a fangirl coma. Just... so good. I want Shinhwa Broadcast back.

I actually really liked this episode. I think it was a lot of fun. I've realize lately that I think a lot of these could be more fun if they went for two episodes. Things get cut as is and I think there was probably some fun banter that was cut as well. I think they mostly have to choose between slapstick and banter for more episodes but I like both. Anyway, I still really enjoyed his episode (although shame on ZE:A for doing such a poor job of protecting their queen!). I think everyone really put effort into this and it worked.

Eric is 4D but he's introvert, and shy around new people. I think he mentioned that he felt uncomfortable on variety shows. He only participated on variety shows when his members were there. I do feel that his variety skills improve a lot since Shinhwa Broadcast.

Eric is introvert and really shy to new people. He also doesn't like attention being put to him when he is not just with the members or people he is not close with. When he is with the members then his true 4D self. That is why he does not like to do variety shows with out them.

Eric has been on a no. of variety shows - including X-Man and Love Letter which were about a decade ago (and more recently shows, like Invincible Youth).
And before LL changed format - Shinwha was basically the perma-guests, along with entertainers/singers turned gagmen like Miss Shin/aka the Chicken, Kim Jong-min and Chun Myunghoon - who tried to the win the heart of the sole female guest.
Even at this fairly early stage, it was pretty evident that the Shinwha guys knew how to do variety.
But out of the Shinwha guys - Jun Jin, Dong-wan and Andy, in particular shone (Eric is one of the more quiet, less outgoing members).
When Eric spoke English to Shinwha's Queen, it seemed really awkward and disjointed, almost as if he is out of practice with his English.

About Eric's English, I have the same thoughts. I think he still has good comprehension of the language, but he has lost some speaking fluency after years of not much English conversation. The same thing happened to Hyesung... Quite a pity, tbh, but it happens to a lot of people. I'm more curious about Andy's English though, years ago when he spoke English he barely had any accent, I wonder about now.

I could understand since we know korean has their own mother language. Language capability will be lost where there is no practice. His english isn't perfect but I still could understand and still pretty good though. That's more than enough. In fact, he seems nervous because his voice sounds a bit trembling.

Oh yes, I don't think his English will ever deteriorate enough for him to be below conversational level. He's just a bit rusty with it because of lack of practice as you said. I'm not saying his English is bad, it is good, just not as good as it used to be. ^^

March 8, 2015 at 12:38 AM
Think a lot of that has to do w/ English not being a native language for Eric as he moved to the US right before starting middle school.
Shouldn't be an issue for those K-pop idols who were born/entirely raised in the US.

March 9, 2015 at 5:11 AM
I think Andy & Eric's English skill & fluency is about the same and are the best among Shinhwa members. But I think Andy has better or should I say clearer pronunciation.
This was Eric speaking to a Thai fan at Singapore airport about Que Sera Sera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kz7cwn4_xA
It has been some years since then. Not sure if it's a bit rusty due to the lack of chance for speaking in public or he was nervous during Running Man and his deep voice is harder to hear when they were out on the field :)

Let me say this. I originally Jung Yoo Mi's fans. She said that she mentioned Eric's name to drama production because she thought Eric is cool guy and not pretend to be cool which match with character in the drama. I was a bit disappointed when she didn't pair with Lee Jin Wook since I like them in I Need Romance. But yeah, I think Eric could get all the girls just by catching the ball. I'm not surprise reading comments that he's introvert. He seems so quite all the time in this episode but still could impressed many. That's what we call charm I think.

Discovery of Romance converted me to full Ericnism. and I have always loved Jung Yumi. I do think she has a cute crush on Eric (who doesnt?). I love Lee Jin Wook too but I cant imagine Kang Tae Ha if its not Eric.
On topic: This episode is funny though I'm a bit over the mud game. Haha's move was daebak and whats with switching allies every 5 seconds lol. Its always a treat to see RM working as a team. Love the dodgeball segment too, when Eric was cool w/o even trying and somehow distracted the game, and JunJin's competitive spirit and sportsmanship. Kwanghee should come again as well, he's pretty funny

Yumi is extrovert girl but she's clumsy and becoming shy and nervous around people. She usually very calm in interviews or press conferences but whenever Eric arounds, she seems so hyper. I do think she kinda fancy him. I hope they'll invite her in any variety shows. The girl is absolutely cute without even trying. Sorry out of topic.

i enjoyed this episode, esp. the first two games. it makes all the difference in the world when RM manages to strike the right blend of having great guests, fun games and sparkling repartee between the RM regulars, guests and audience.
Game 1. while it was hugely funny and entertaining, the first game was obviously exhausting for some players, particularly Jong-kook, who had to deal with 4 guys at the same time. there were also a couple of great moves, courtesy of KJK and Ha-ha.
another point -- never trust Ha-ha when he starts to negotiate LOL. he's basically the Capt. Jack Sparrow of Running Man. he'll strike a deal with anyone and betray them without a second thought to make sure he survives and wins in the end.
Game 2. I didn't really expect to enjoy the dodgeball game, because it has been featured so many times before, but what really set this game apart was how seriously it was fought (by the teams and their respective queens) and the way the audience reacted.
Game 3 wasn't as funny as the first 2 segments but i have no complaints because everyone was just so tired at this point. even the last part (where Ji-hyo luckily pulled out plus symbols for everyone) had its share of suspense, too. after the cooking episodes, ep. 236 seems like an unexpected treat :)

I so, so agree with your favorite moments. Oh, thanks Gummi for faithfully recapping for us RM over the yearsss. I also laughed out loud on Game 1 because of Hyung-Shik. Gummi is right, that kid looked like he was about to burst into tears.
And on game 3...Ji Hyo is seriously one of the LUCKIEST people I've ever seen. For long time RM watchers, I'm sure you guys have seen how she manages to choose the best of things. Ji Suk Jin is also a pretty lucky guy...now Kwang Soo, on the other hand...let's just say not to let your fate in his hand, hahaha.

Can Shinhwa be guests on the show again? And this time have only Shinhwa with the RM members?
No hating on ZE:A, but I like Shinhwa member interacting with the RM team like their first pirate episode. They're super fun and hilarious.

I like Hyungsik. He is so cute. He finally gets to be on Running Man. He wasn't able to appear in the show because he is on Real Men. Hope he will be able to appear on RM again.

This was a fun and entertaining ep, but not necessarily a funny ep (the games were too physical and/or had the teams too separated to allow for a lot of interaction and banter.
Shinwha always makes for a fun time; pretty amazing that they are still together when most boy-bands dissolve much earlier.
A bit shocking to see how much they have aged, tho.
And yes, Andy is surprisingly strong.

Well, I try to catch watching Running Man just because of I know Eric Mun will be there since I like his character in Discovery of Love and wanna see how he is outside the filming. I think his variety skill is the least among his members but I understand now why many said he's the best leader in kpop. From all the games, he always take the most difficult and most responsible one. Game one in sang namja category, game 2 as main bodyguard of the queen and game 3 as base of human ladder. It seems he's much better person than his character in dramas lol..
Running Man team also tried their best till the very end. So, I think they deserved to be the winner this time even though I doubt they could win at the second game if they didn't get 'free' lucky in the final round directly since Shinhwa teamwork is better.
ZE:A, I surprised I enjoy watching them. They seems quite funny as whole group. It's warm to see how their seniors, Running Man team and Shinhwa taking care of them.
Shinhwa. I'm speechless. They good in making people laugh, they're very competitive and still looking good and charismatic. Their juniors should learn from Shinhwa of how making better strategy, solid teamwork, trusting and sacrifice. I didn't see they blame one of the member for not winning 'free' ticket to the final at dodgeball game, and how everyone asking whether Eric is okay or not after ladder game finished since he was the base one.
Good show and very entertaining. I think I will watch next episodes...

You took the Running Man members too lightly. The Running Men are really good at playing dodge balls and really deserves the win. Their teamwork is as good as Shinhwa’s in this game. The members all have their default roles during the game, be it attacking or defending.
Yoo Jae Suk is the best attacker. He normally amongst the first to be ousted (as noted by Gary, “He’ll be ousted soon”), so he can attack from the side lines. He received primary support from Ji Suk Jin, whose attacks also served as passes to him. The combo plays between the two aren’t as fancy as Shinhwa’s, but still managed to oust their opponents.
Lee Kwang Soo is the best guard. The usual Running Man’s formation is for Kwang Soo to protect the Queen, and the rest (including Kim Jong Kook & Gary) to protect him. Shinhwa’s relentless barrage especially Jun Jin’s are sharp and precise, but as soon as the ball leave their hand, Kwang Soo already reacted by moving his queen out of the line of fire.

Good to see competitive people who do variety well. This episode is great. The mud game and the pyramid game were extremely physically taxing. The pyramid game was just awesome and the difficulty level is so high. Hope no one hurt themselves.
The last mission for the plus and minus sign is a travesty. Can you imagine working so hard then getting a minus sign? This is terrible and unfair. And you get punished more if you placed first in the last game? Especially after we see them all working so hard.
Luckily our Goddess of Luck Ms Mong pulled out all pluses and the deserving team won. What a huge let down. Can you imagine the extreme rage on the internet if the "wrong" team won? This is just total rubbish. This isn't 1N2D.

I don't think I would've been sad to see any of the three teams win. There is no "wrong" team to win because all three worked really hard. Even for last place ZE:A, it's not like they didn't give it their all. They were just less athletic as a whole than Shinhwa, and didn't have as much experience/know-how as RM. (Plus RM was super lucky this entire episode - rolling a 100, 90, and 60, which was the highest number of the low die, and also being automatically admitted to final game of dodgeball.)
So no, I can't imagine the extreme rage people will have if a team other than RM won, because they're all deserving.

AGAIN Running Man? First you bypass the opportunity to have the Misaeng cast on your Misaeng themed episode (though I understand that might have been difficult), and now you invite ZE:A but no Im SiWan? I was actually rooting for a Running Man all kill of their guests for once but I guess that last game was too physically demanding for them. I really loved how everyone was competitive during this episode, it makes it all the more exciting. I do feel that mud games need to be put on the shelf for a while though since its really starting to get boring at times

One of the best episode. All of them tried hard but still really fun to watch.
One think I notice. Don't you think whenever Eric show up in variety or talk shows, he always has more screen time than others eventhough the guy even rarely talk? I wonder whether those team productions love him so much. I admit he's kinda prince charming though.
I love how Running Man team showed their power and could balance Shinhwa. Love their interactions. They may compete but still full of friendship. I would say Lee Kwang Soo and Junjin is man of the match. Both are competitive and really funny.

That comment about Eric is so true! I think the reason is because Eric rarely joins variety shows (and only because of and for Shinhwa) just like KJK said. It's so rare they got to show him a lot. He also does make everythingso cool. That part when he passed Junjin the ball and immediately reached for their Queen to defend her was pretty hot! Haha!

Eric used to be on variety a lot.
Think the reason why it's rarer for him these days is that he has too many demands on his time.
Aside from being co-President of Shinwha and having his own talent agency, he's the only one w/ a leading man acting career - and doing dramas as a lead is exhausting.

I rewatched this morning. I was so surprised when Song Ji hyo got the name of Junyoung for the second match of wrestling match. She said sorry to Junyoung. Did she know that Junyoung got terrible leg injury back in 2012 before ZE:A's comeback with Phoenix? This song is good but Junyoung only sit in the MV because of his legs.
Thanks Mong Ji for taking care of Junyoungie. He needs more love.
