Happy OT Friday! This was a slow week for me dramawise. I've only seen the latest Hogu's Love and the first half of Monday's SOGC episode.

Im Seul-ong is KILLING it as the confused lawyer. All of his recent interactions with Ho-gu were comedy gold. I want more of them please.

I also started reading this delightfully funny webtoon/manhwa called Noblesse. It's got vampires, werewolves, humans, mutants and wonderfully sarcastic characters. Frankenstein's in this too. Hehe. Anyway, if like me, you enjoy reading about supernatural beings and sarcastic people who tease the easily annoyed, you may want to check this out. ^^

Hi there everyone. It's ALWAYS a slow drama WEEK for me since all my watching seems confined to weekend shows ha ha!

I did buck the trend slightly with I Heard it Through the Grapevine on Mondays and Tuesdays, and I am loving it ... AND Joonie. I suspect those creepy parents of his may have me throwing things at the screen sooner or later though.

Rosy Lovers and Heart to Heart are both drawing to their conclusions and whilst I enjoy both shows, I tend to find that neither bothers me much after Ive watched them.

The one thing that DOES bother me though is Persevere Goo Hae Ra. I am SO in love with that show. It has
gone from angst to sorrow and back to angst, with misdirection, meddling 2nd leads, and noble idiocy thrown in for good measure, but I am LOVING it. In particular the lovely actor Kwak Si Yang who plays my favourite character SeJong. Oh how that boy has me in knots .... tears too. I havent been so hung up on anything since, dare I say it, Reply1994. All my Chillbongi feels have come back. For the record I am totally #TeamHyung!! With 4 episodes to go I do hope the Writers manage to tie up all the loose ends AND give us the ending we want ... well the ending *I* want ... at least.

All the others shows I thought I might like have somehow not grabbed my attention, but I know I can always go back to them when they are finished and watch at my leisure. Oh I do like a nice drama marathon.

Happy Friday everyone!

I totally forgot about H2H. I dislike the latest plot twist. All the Ko family members, except for Sero, are numbskull overly emotional morons. (Yes, I'm THAT annoyed.)

Sero, on the other hand, is LOVE LOVE LOVE. She is an awesome woman, direct and open with her intentions, not insensitive nor tactless, and she genuinely cares for the people she loves. I'm glad she went to boarding school and grew up AWAY from the negative influences of her family. Seriously, that family is a downer. A joy-suck, buzzkill, depressing company of people.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. I really like the character Se Jong but because a lot of B1A4 fans are watching this show Kwak Si Yang is getting a lot of unnecessary hate which is sad because they all work so hard.
Personally at this point (ep 9) I want Se Jong to get the girl (unless his character changes and becomes unlikeable) but the drama poster suggests that Se Chan/ Ray and Hae Ra are the main characters so its quite uncertain. ?
Also the producers aren't stupid, they know Jin Young has a huge fan base so the must've cast him as Se Chan/Ray for a reason.
But yeah I'm just happy Se Jong finally confessed, all that misunderstanding was clawing at my belly.

It's hard to pinpoint. They were sageuk clothing and they are dealing with politics, but it's MOSTLY a love story and there's a lot of humor.

It's set in Goryeo, so that makes it different from most of the sageuks I've seen - which admittedly aren't many- but it's 'looser' somehow than Joseon.

I won't lie. You're going to cry, too. But it's so good. Soooooooooooooooooooooo good.

Hey beanies,

For those looking for a collapse/expand feature for long comments, I made a small Google Chrome plugin for Dramabeans called DBrief.
You can get DBrief from the official Chrome webstore here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dbrief/ocnjohieaglmmhgkebkblnjagmmkafgj

There's also a "mute" feature if you want to use that to avoid some people. Don't worry, it's not permanent, you can easily turn the features on/off with the checkbox. Instructions for how to use can be found here: http://dr-myri-blog.blogspot.ch/2015/03/how-to-hide-long-comments-in-dramabeans.html

BTW, this only works on Dramabeans web layout. And only on Chrome. Sorry to mobile, Firefox, etc users. :(

(To JB/GF and minions, if you don't like this post, feel free to delete. Thanks~)

I think the objection may be because the examples in the link provided on how to mute a username and how to truncate long posts are both redfox's comments.

That could very easily be interpreted as a personal dig at someone. Maybe that wasn't intended, but I can understand if redfox feels she's being singled out.

I agree with tee, what's with Live and let live? And not sure why people are finding scrolling bothersome? (Unless you're writing with a mouse, rather than a scrollpad?)

0
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

Uhh...the mute feature was on mary herself in the demonstration.

The truncating was on redfox but honestly, that one time when she had weird breaks in her comments was quite frustrating.

0

The example for muting was my username: mary

I just checked again and redfox's comment was in the background, but that's because she was first comment in that post and my sample comment was in reply to her.

The truncate example was hers because she had a long comment. I don't see why people find being truncated offensive. I don't delete the rest of the comment. There's an option to expand it. People on YouTube don't complain when their comments get replaced with a "Read more" option.

But now that you've raised these points I want to know if redfox prefers that I change the screenshots. Because those were NOT intentional at all and not a campaign to get her muted.

0

For people with less than optimal internet, scrolling for longer than a sec can cause the page to jump all over the place and load weirdly. I find that distracting and irritating and on days when things are slow net-wise for me, I have to either endure an uncomfortable experience or give up.

Despite the example, this really was written with the best of intentions and with no particular individual in mind. Redfox does write long posts regularly, so it makes sense that when a comment needed to be tested, one of hers came up easily. But it wasn't done with a mean spirit.

0

With the length of of many comments here, it really gets too much. A person can lose their train of thought completely.

0

I talked to alua on twitter, and I changed the sample image now to truncate my username instead.

I can't completely erase redfox's name on the pics though, because she comments a lot on DB and most of the time her name WILL be in the shot. But at least now she is just part of the background like that half-nekkid pic of Jang Hyuk.

Both examples now mute and truncate my username.

I hope this is the end of the issue. Those who want a streamlined beanut gallery can use the app. Those who don't, well... no changes necessary.

0

ok, if they were not intentional, I understand (I was at work hence a delay with the reply) and I am NOT offended at all - I am dealing with FAR WORSE matters here every day, my dear, with stalkers and now threats to cut off my hands (by a russian neo-nazi, because I spoke to him in english). so this does not worry me. But it can leave the impression I mentioned, even if you did not intend that at all.

I find that whether a comment is long or short, that does not make it either annoying or not annoying. if either of them is boring to you, don´t read it (TS or ...who was it). If you find MY particular comment offencive somehow, SPEAK UP. and I have ALWAYS apologized. Go check.

mary, I got nothing against truncating (did I spell that right?), and if using the screencaps with my comments was just a coincidence, then it is no big deal. take it easy.

0

I think I kind of agree. Your comments might be long but no-one is being forced to read them. This constant "singling out" by a set of db commenters leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
"Frustrating the frustrating" Really?

We are forced to scroll down past them and they get so long, it's tiresome.

It's not really just redfox. There are others too, when i get on a laptop, that I'll use this extension for. But since redfox jumped in, I hsve no problem telling her she's part of the problem for me.

0

Required fields are marked *

TS, is a short comment automatically not annoying to you then? for me, the annoyingness depends on the content more than length. I am more than willing to read long comments if they thoroughly explain something I have found confusing

0

@redfox Short, to the point comments are fine by me.

0

Where did I say frustrating the frustrating?

Did you install the plugin? Do you see how it works?

It truncates long comments and adds a "Read more" button. This is how comments work in huge sites nowadays. YouTube, allkpop, Facebook, any-site-that-uses-DISQUS, etc.

Some people skim through long comments anyways. I just made it possible for them to do so. They can always expand the comment if the start of it interests them...

The mute is a joke feature and is not required. If anything, I wish people would mute ME just so they'll see the joke feature and get a good laugh.

"...and all the people who ATE part of it."

I LOL'd so hard at that.

That aside...I'm one of those people who was a bit tired of seeing super long comments in recaps so this is interesting... even though it feels kinda mean (especially the mute feature). Is it weird to have mixed feelings about this? :/

Anyways, I added the extension....but I don't see any long comments collapsing...so not sure if I downloaded it correctly....

0

@DayDreamer, there will be a small icon that looks like this in the address bar: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EwHoWH92R1s/VPbJGALnpSI/AAAAAAAAEy4/7PH4bhoM388/s1600/dbrief_icon.png

Click on that icon and check the Enable DBrief box.

Long comments will now have that read more/read less feature.

Again, the mute feature is not required. Even I don't have it activated.

0

Oh my autocorrects are epic. I think the app is good for those who want it. I just don't think it's necessary for people to then go into what or who they're blocking. I know my posts are long and not to everyone's taste so if I'm skipped then I'm skipped.

I think it was nice for the app to be made since people expressed a desire for it. And now we can go back to eating each other...

0

Thanks, mary. I did that and it now shows up. Just another question....you said it doesn't work on mobiles...but I have Chrome on my phone so will it still not work?

0

@DayDreamer, quick answer is no, it won't work for Chrome mobile. :(((

Chrome says the Web Store is available on Windows, Linux, Mac, and Chrome OS. So no mobile support yet (that would be Android, WP, or iOS).

Though if they add support, I still have to update the code because it depends a lot on the actual layout of the dramabeans website.

(Meaning, if javabeans switches themes tomorrow, I'm screwed! Haha)

0

Tee - given recent discussions about what various people think are appropriate uses of OT space and awareness of the guidelines put in place by JB and GF, I can see why you think this might be targeted at an individual, but I don't believe that's true.

This is the very definition of live and let live, along the lines of that old folk wisdom: Good fences make good neighbors

People can now modify the experience a little bit (or a lot, or not at all) so that no matter how this space is used, everyone enjoys the experience they have here. How is that not a good thing?

You didn't say this, but I can't help but think that those who object to truncation or blocking feel that the rights of those being truncated or blocked are being violated, in some way. But that only makes sense if you feel that they are owed something for having written (ie, people reading what they wrote.) THAT goes directly against the common defense of 'Well, you can just scroll past. No one is saying you have to read it.'

You might say that DBrief was a solution suggested by that comment. In fact, I do say it. So how can anyone possibly object?

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

@JoAnne - I get what Mary was trying to do, but I won't deny I have mixed feelings about this.

NOT because of the fact of truncation (so many commenting systems have it as an automated feature these days) but because it's a change to the viewing experience that isn't directly put in place by JB and GF. To me, it's not really db without a wall of text somewhere in the comments!

But as long as we don't turn into one of those kpop sites with everyone fighting over why poor talentless oppa/unnie should have the right to act, I think we're ok.

0

@pogo I'm torn about the this-is-not-official-dramabeans part too. I did send them an email about the plugin. And I'd willingly make the plugin unlisted again on Chrome webstore if JB and Co. object to it.

(Unlisted means only those with the link can download. This was how I launched the plugin on its first few days.)

0

@pogo
DB is known for its extended conversations, which is definitely part of the experience. However, your comment rubs me a little because there is NO obligation to install mary's extension. It is completely OPTIONAL to use (and only in the desktop chrome browser mind you). So I feel it doesn't change DB at all unless the user CHOOSES to use it.

0

@myweithisway - honestly, I've seen one-off comments promoting the extension in more than one thread.

I realise this is not Mary's intention at all since she isn't even the one posting all those comments but it does feel like it's being pushed on me.

0

Those one-off comments NOTIFY us of this option. I don't see how they are PUSHING anything on us. It's not like they are insurance salesmen following you around to make you buy sthg on impulse.

Read the one-off comments; ignore them if you are not interested in the plug in. Easy.

If you love to read and/or write long comments, you can carry on as before. Those who download the plug-in wouldn't be reading those long comments even w/o it.

0

Tee,

Please don't quote me out of context. You don't know the reason behind that line. And no, I was not singling anybody out. It's an inside joke so obviously you weren't meant to understand it. Do let it go.

And to bring it back to Mary's original comment, I have installed DBrief and have been enjoying it immensely. The collapse function makes it easier to skim through all comments and the mute function is hilarious for reasons Rim-related. And in case you're wondering, no I haven't muted anyone (except for myself when I was testing the mute function).

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

You know I saw that line and shrugged cause I didn't get it and thought 'it must be an inside joke'. But maybe there is a lesson there about writing things that might be misconstrued.... it's an inside joke but on a public discussion platform so no surprises when people start thinking there is a hidden meaning behind it.

0

We are practicing "live and let live!" With the extension, there will never be a need to tell someone to write less because the post gets too long. They can write to their heart's content and it won't be frustrating to the reader to have to scroll through so much because the long posts will be COLLAPSED.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

exactly. What's the big deal?! Long comments are truncated everywhere. Facebook, Disqus, etc. It's NORMAL. If you want to read on, you click. If you think "muting" is mean (also done of Facebook and on Twitter), don't do it

0

THIS. EXACTLY this. Mary's VERY generous use of her time and skills has created a gift to the DB user community. Those who want to use it can. Those who don't want to use it, don't have to. People can still write posts which make War and Peace seem like a postcard if they want to. No one is stopping them, and all their words are still available to be read, even to those using the extension.

It's all about choice - if I see a truncated comment that looks interesting, I'll click on it. If not, then I won't. No one is being hurt or offended, unless they choose to be. So once again, THANK YOU, mary.

0

I'm sure there is more than one person who routinely write LONG comments on DB. No need to feel targeted.

I don't even come to OT, but there are LONG comments that I'd like to be able to skip. As far as I'm concerned, Mary is performing a public service, putting in time and effort to find and offer an option for those who want to use it. My fingers thank Mary for it.

If you are one of those few ppl who can only write LONG comments, no worry, there r ppl who want to read them, and they Won't be the ones to mute or hide. You'll still be read by those who enjoy your company.

I don't think that's it at all. The blocking feature would be useful for when some people are engaged in a conversation that might be spoiler-y.

If a comment is about a subject that isn't of interest, and is quite long (you can truncate beginning at 1000, but I'm testing it out at 3000) then it can be truncated so that it's faster to get to other, more pertinent to the particular individual interest comments.

I have been guilty of writing volumes on occasion. Or perhaps someone just doesn't want to hear what I have to say. Block me. I'm okay. Try the feature out on an older post, if you like. There are a LOT of comments that are pretty long, and a lot more people than you writing them.

I won't deny that there's been a lot of comment directed toward you, that would be silly. But there are also things like that person who would go into every post to drop news about Healer, even when it was completely off-topic.

There are a lot of people who very much enjoy the 'essay experience' vs the 'comment experience' - this extension allows everyone to coexist peacefully. I see it as a measure of love for this community, which has generally been a mature, respectful respite from the rest of the internet. (And I now probably qualify for truncation!)

You're not missing anything...I'm testing it at 500 words! It's so fun to collapse and expand comments!

0

"I didn’t want to crush JoAnne’s hopes… but her testing it at 3000 means she never sees any comments truncated. (Or does that mean she’s too nice and doesn’t want to truncate anything?)"

I laughed so hard at that! So cute! (BTW I've been reading the link I found here on open thread with the fake blood squeecaps- another place to lurk :) and you guys are great!)

I think the collapsible/expandable solution is great so everyone can have their cake and eat it too (Except I'm on mobile so I can't, but I never minded scrolling so it's okay with me). I'm just glad that it solves an issue for some people. Good job, mary! Thank you.

0

MissMary,

Neat extension! I like JoAnn's idea of hiding spoilers. Can the extension hide posts which have the word spoiler in it? Most people here are courteous enough to add the spoiler tag to their spoilery comments. It will be easier to hide by that word than to find out which users are posting spoilery comments.

when the KMHM spoilers became just too many tho and people were posting fast replies, they did not add spoiler tags anyu more (I try to but sometimes they just slip...)

0

There is an official spoiler tag discussed in the dramabeans comment policy page: http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/07/introducing-our-dramabeans-commenting-policy/

<spoiler>YOUR SPOILER HERE</spoiler>

I *can* add a spoiler-block feature when I have time. Because honestly, your idea was simple and brilliant! But since there's an official spoiler tag already, it might be better to promote that instead. And even better: the official spoiler tag should work on all browsers!

That comment policy page (and its comments) make for some good reading though. TO BEANIES reading this, go read the rules right now.

Thanks.

0

For me, when I see that a comment is going to talk about something I haven't seen and it's a show where I want to go in blind, I just stop reading immediately. Sometimes I actually avert my eyes and scroll a bit, but I'm an idiot like that, making hand gesture on conference calls, pointing at the computer screen... so now with this, I can mute the few people talking about that point and move on with no accidents, spoiler tag or not.

Hahahaha, that's a very mean yet very useful feature (quickly installs) I just skip over overly long ones though unless I know that contributor normally says stuff I value. Isn't OT for longer posts anyway though?

The mute is just an easter egg though.

I think most beanies would find the collapse/expand feature useful. It's similar to how DISQUS or YouTube comments work. Long comment is truncated with the button to "Show more" or something.

This extension could possibly reduce blood pressure.

I need to think about this. It seems some beanies want a spoiler tag.

Thing is, there's an official Dramabeans spoiler tag but newbies don't know about it. And even oldies in beanut gallery, when we're excited, we forget to use it.

0

It's not mean. It's no different than putting someone on limited on fb.

I was half joking, but that is matter of interpretation. You might not feel it's mean if you are the one doing it, or indeed if someone else does it to you (I for one couldn't give a damn), but some people on the receiving end might feel bad (case in point the discussion that has developed up there with Redfox...). So I do think its mean, but as I said I also think its very useful, especially the truncating feature. The mute one not so much, for me personally, as I think it might stifle flow of discussion (I welcome opinions I even disagree with). One feature I would love, is removing people who ride on the first comment. I take time to read their comment trying to figure out what based on the 1st post they are responding to, only for the penny to drop that they want their comment to be higher up Its soooo childish (example 1.1.3 above)

Please don't take it the wrong way. @Cassieap is replying to ME and my slow week and the other commenters who are close to her. I believe I can speak for her when I say she's not "riding" on the first comment. ^^

0

It really is not mean to choose how you spend your time.

0

Ah so it was to the slow week part, thanks for explaining, that had me scratching my head. I guess when I reply to people, its targeted to a question or a comment, I don't then go into sharing what I thought of the drama's I watched, I would put that part in a separate comment below. I guess that's why it looked like it was riding your comment.

0

@TS I think we are focusing on different things, I am focusing on the feelings of a person once they know they have been muted. No one gets hurt unless they find out, but if they do find out, or suspect that they are they can get hurt. You mean to harm, but they felt the harm. Ofcourse we can spend time like we like, I limit and even block people on FB. But I don't announce to them that I have done that. That would be mean. (And I am not saying Mary has done that at all by the way, the post has just got out of hand)

0

I still honestly do not understand why some might think this is mean? What exactly about it is mean? You can chose to not install it (no one is forcing you to use it), and that's the end of it. If some people don't want to read someone's posts, or find scrolling down tiresome or slowing down their browser, what's so mean about it? There's a mute function in most social platforms, and also truncation is available too. This extension could make readers' experiences better, and I'm happy about it.

If someone feels bad because their long texts will be truncated, then it's their problem. We, as users of this website, are not forced to read them or scroll down multiple consecutive long posts about things we might not be interested in. And that is completely fine. Different people, different interests.

It's a choice. Some people chose to write long comments (and I'm totally OK with it), but some people may prefer not to read them. Everyone wins.

Disclaimer: I don't use this extension, as I'm a FF user. But I've tested it, and it's quite useful.

0

@tweetpandora
Do you get hurt when facebook auto-truncates long posts? Dramabeans as a website needs to move to a more modern commenting system. I should get notifications when someone replies to my comments, or when new comments are posted. Refreshing to see new comments is so old school. Till they overhaul that, this extension bridges the gap in a small way. The muting is just to maintain peace. No-ones feelings are hurt. Do you think its better to rage at a person you don't agree with or mute that person? Maintains civility in the comments section. You honestly don't think that all 99.9% of commenters would mute the same person and thus isolate him/her, do you? Such things will only happen to spambots. You might say you like it just the way it is, just like some people still love their old flip-phones.

0

@ KDramaNewbie I wonder if you actually bothered to even read my posts (unless you truncated/muted them haha, that was a joke) First of all, my first comment was a half joke. I actually installed the plug in! Second my issue if more with the muting. But actually even for the truncating, it is nicer to have less space taken up by comments I guess, but I personally just scroll past long ones that I don't find interesting, its not that big of an issue to me.

I guess the problem becomes as one poster put it when it's not a feature of the website (i.e. instituted by DB) it feels 'targeted' at certain people and my point is that hurt can ensue (although Redfox has now said she isn't hurt, so maybe we all do well do move on from this issue). I am all for an improved platform, I agree I would like to be notified when responses come in and I would like to have like (and dislike) buttons. I moved away from old flip phones years ago....

0

I'm in the camp that think this is not at all mean.

Ppl will be hurt when they find out they've been muted? How do they find out?
And How about the feelings of ppl who are irritated by the long comments that never end?

0

@TS - I get what Mary was trying to do with this, but I fail to see how the long comments are in any way forcing you to read them or dictating how you spend your time. There are scroll buttons on most computers, after all.

this is an annoying comment, but it cannot be collapsed cause it is short.

0

This is how the collapse feature is awesome. If you have already read a long comment you don't have to scroll through it again everytime you come back to the thread.

It would be wonderful for mobile devices. I would almost be tempted to switch to Chrome. I'm not, but it is an amazing plugin.

0

I don't think long comments force reading. I do feel this extension allows better time management on my part, because scrolling through a large thread can get time consuming. It is a great tool to use, just as I use the spoiler tag, just as I employ the find feature on the browser menu to locate drama discussion I have interest in and to locate people that I want to read, at will, when I do not have time or interest to browse through comments.

0

Redfox wins the prize for most funny comment of the day, I think! You made me laugh really hard just now.

Genuine, pleased, laughing with you laughter. (In case anyone was thinking I was being mean. Because I wasn't. I honestly thought her comment was very snarky and hilarious and if you know me, I am a big fan of snark.)

0

thanks JoAnne.

0

And as someone with joint pain, I get really tired of scrolling past all of them.

0

After reading through all the comments and reactions to this new neato tool (Thank you, mary!) it makes me so happy to be a part of this community.

Mary was prompted to do something that will make the site easier and faster to navigate, and HIDE SPOILERS, Hurray!

And folks are worried that it'll hurt other people's feelings - I think that is awesome and reflects the type of reader and commenter DB attracts - kind, fun-loving, resourceful, practical and varied. The fact that there is this much caring for possible injuries touches me.

+10000 jomo :D

I was worried and sad how it started out but am glad how things settled down and feelings were resolved once we started talking.

Beanies are one of the nicest, self-regulating communities I've been a part of online. JB calls herself our dictator in the about page, but *whisper whisper* I heard our dictator locks herself up at home and likes to drink soju while watching and writing about this horrible thing called kdramas. So she doesn't really have time to curtail our freedoms like most dictators do.

That's good news for us XD

0

@ mary, don't be sad. You took an initiative to do something no one would bother doing and put it out there with an open mind. Both sides of the table discussed their views and even gave some more ideas. Rather than seeing endless bickering on multiple threads about long vs short posts, I much preferred this progressive discussion. So kudos to you. And thank you for answering my technical questions up there.

Don't listen to asshole purists who say javascript is not a real programming language. :(

Well, it's not, but still... no reason for them to hate on it and its fans.

It's beautiful. Easy to setup. You only need a browser to start playing with code. And the things you can do with it. ♥ ♥ ♥ verra useful, is javascript.

I don't get that though. Is that because it's a scripting language or are they saying that in the same sense as when people say real men don't eat quiche?

Btw, great job Mary! You are all kind of awesome! :)

I don't get it either! Maybe because Javascript doesn't compile?

(I went and Googled "why javascript not a programming language" and just became more confused at the conflicting results.)

Maybe it's like what you said. real-men-don't-eat-quiche kind of thing. Something like this xkcd comic: http://xkcd.com/378/

:D

0

Huh you guys just made me Google it as well and apparently JavaScript is a real programming language? It can do object-oriented and functional programming and everything. It's just not really used for anything except to control web browsers.

@latteholic Lol, I actually much prefer something like Python because the numerous libraries mean you can do pretty much anything, and the data structures are much better.

0

@whimsyful, aaah... so it's the object oriented stuff that made it an outcast? It handles objects so much better now! Been doing afaik since maybe 2008.

I do remember a time circa 2005 when everyone, including webdevs, were saying javascript is bad, don't use it. But it's changed now and I love it so much. There is server side js and non-relational database js stuff now. Even a js based game engine.

I'm just a hobbyist with poor internet connection so I always liked things that are easy to setup with minimal download and install. :) it's why I fell into webdev bec all you need is notepad, a browser, and the html/css/js docu.

All the new js libraries give me opportunities to play with code and build things for others use like DBrief and the Kdrama Bingo game. :D

BTW I've always been wanted to learn python because my real life crush keeps talking about it on Facebook... Hehe.

0

@mary Ha. I thought real programmer use notepad? :D I'm torn between emacs and vim really. Love the automated tabbing on emacs, but the keyboard shortcuts are painful. Vim is much easier to navigate but it doesn't have that fancy tabbing feature to help you look for that missing semi-colon or bracket..

@whimsyful hehe. don't get me wrong, I do like python. And I do agree with you about the libraries. I highly depend on them to do my analysis :D. But it mostly reminds me of work, which is fun (when you got it to work) but stressful (when it didn't). While javascript will now remind me of mary's rim's butt jokes, which is just fun :D

0

@mary yes learn Python if you want! The syntax is very easy to pick up, it's very powerful and you can do practically anything (from game development to statistical modelling to web applications) thanks to all the libraries available. And there are free interactive tutorials available online, too.

Requisite xkcd comic: http://xkcd.com/353/

0

@latteholic ahh the eternal emacs vs. vim debate. I'm not a professional developer, so I just use IDEs with all their lovely autocomplete and code tracking features. Or Notepad++.

See, I've had to use both Python and Javascript for work before, and I found debugging Javascript much more painful than debugging Python (among other things, matching up multiple brackets can be very tedious).

0

@latteholic You're a bigger nerd than I am! Haha (err that was a compliment)

I've only started using vim bec the boss in my new job scoffed at me using notepad++ :((((

I haven't tried emacs. *clueless* But my coworker who does the C/binaries part of our work uses a Chrome plugin that lets you work on terminals on Chrome. And I think she uses it because the terminals can be tabbed. Maybe you can hunt that plugin down so you can marry that emacs feature thingy with vim?

0

@mary omg. the lovechild of emacs and vim. I'd LOVE that! Oh, quick google showed that they exit already.. Evil and Vimacs! I need to check if the machine I'm working on has them installed :D
My advisor also scoffed at me for using notepad/gedit (for linux) at first, and she told me to start learning how to use emacs (mostly because of the tabbing feature). Then I rebel a little and started using vim :D But now I use them because I have to ssh into another machine to do my work and I can just run them in terminal mode for ease of use. I don't think I can do that with gedt...

@whimsyful javascript has C-like syntax right? then yeah I can see how that can be a nightmare to debug. I hate it when my code won't compile just because I missed a semi-colon or bracket.. But then I don't like it either when I have an extra white space on my python code and my code won't run because of that :D

How can someone program a plugin for chrome ? if I may ask you.
What language did you use to achieve it? I've tried programming something like that for an editor's app and it was the hardiest thing ever, so complicated and annoying! I hated programming after that experience and till now I can't bring my self to write codes or learning new programming languages.
I wish I can produce something useful out of my knowledge. I really appreciate your work it must have been a very tiring process :" )

Thanks! :D

Chrome uses the same languages you do for making a website: HTML, CSS, and Javacript.

If you're already familiar with those, you can make a Chrome plugin. :D I did get stuck a couple of times... :( Good thing Chrome has lots of sample codes you can download and copy and tinker with. (Open sourced codes are ♥)

There are lots of fun ways to study html/css/js nowadays. If you wanna give programming another shot, try Treehouse or Codecademy. They have those quiz style lessons and games for learning. A very far cry from the scary, dry programming lessons from the past! :D

Good luck!

Happy OT Beanies, glad it’s the weekend but sad cause I gotta work, very much looking forward to my holiday to Germany next week, though it will mean I will miss the final two episodes of my beloved Kill Me Heal Me.

*****SPOILERS****** (how I wish that KMHM was recapped quicker so we didn’t have to spend every OT being naughty beanies discussing spoilers…)

I loved this week’s episodes!! I am so glad they cut the noble idiocy element (that every freaking drama seems to need to have) quick. How brilliant was it that the personalities had a role in bringing CDH back to Ri Jin, I just LOVED that!! I loved the cute way Segi is compelled to do what Ri Jin tells him to do. What I didn’t like was the regression of Segi back to mindless violent personality, I would have liked to see him control his actions better as he merges with CDH  Nothing was sweeter then Yo Sub’s farewell tell to Ri Jin (though the moment was ruined by Oh Ri On). Was that the last we sall of Yo Na, and my goodness CDH trying to act like Yo Na was hilarious. I thought I wouln’t like Ri On in this series (he overly tries to control Ri Jin) but I have to say I love how he deals and helps CDH and his personalities like a the real ‘bad’ friend he promised to be. I have to uplaud the child actors they did such a great job, it was nice to have the full backstory play out instead of having the flashbacks this time, it actually would have been nice to have a longer backstory element actually! The twists in HMKM have just been brilliant. Its not a perfect show, but this will go down as one of my favourite this year along with Healer.

Ho Gu’s love: I am loving this show, I actually am starting to like BHC despite his douchebag behaviour in the past. Ho Gu is just gold. The only thing is I can’t warm to Do Hee, I really hope they do something with her character soon to make us warm to her, I can’t route for her. At this point the OTP is quickly becoming Ho Gu and the Baby for me 

Gonna start watching ‘In Time with You’ (always prefer to watch original before the remake). To people who have seen it, Is it really worth the hype?

KMHM: how is Ji Sung so perfect as all these characters - as Do Hyun, as Yo Na, and then as Do Huyn doing a bad impersonation of yo na? and Se Gi with his conflicted cuteness / badass obediant expression, omg! he was SO adorkable!

I have some issues with the writers in terms of some if the messages they're sending but I agree that they seem pretty skilled. The voice/tone is unique and they're clearly having a lot of fun with it. I really do enjoy so many of the characters, even the small ones that have little screen time.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

What would be those messages? I dropped the show after ep 2 but I keep reading people praise it so makes me curious. Also, I'm bored by the current shows. I guess I dropped HG because I couldn't feel any chemistry between the OTP, I didn't like the main guy much, or anyone else for that matter, and I don't even enjoy baby stories unless they are really unique.

0

The messages I don't like are mostly in the beginning. I am iffy about how they portray pregnancy/abortion/adoption/single moms although that's mostly taken a backseat. I'm also a bit concerned with what messages they might end up sending with the second lead, but I won't know that until the end. I don't really think couples are the strength if this show. What I like is the overall tone. I also like the individual characters and how they interact with each other (in non-romantic ways). It's not as bold as say Seonam Detectives in dealing with more modern issues but at least it's still willing to being them up. And mostly I just like a lot if the acting. They seem to be doing well with having a comedy that also has sentiment attached (but not in a wat that drags it down).

But I also understand that the tone is unique and quirky and may not be everyone's style.

0

I loved it. If you like the ‘best friends becoming a couple’ trope you’ll love it. The leads in the original had a great camaraderie and the script further strengthened their chemistry. Even otherwise, it is a good drama. Well, when this drama first aired, I was a single working woman, about the same age as the female protagonist and could identify myself with her to a certain extent. That might be why I liked I even more.

I checked how to make plugins for Firefox, and it was SCARY. O___O Like, I have to do stuff with the command prompt. And testing requires restarting the browser. (In Chrome, you just hit F5 to preview code changes. Very easy.)

But I'm reading the Firefox documentation again. Bit by bit. And it seems doable, just takes more time than Chrome. Maybe later. I would love to have this on Firefox since I'm a Firefox girl. Though I'm not sure if I should continue. Since there's so many issues about people using the plugin or not. :(

PS Hello Firefox-using chingu~~~~ I honestly thought everyone around me used Chrome and I'm the only one nuts about Firefox. Glad to see another FF user here.

0

All egos aside, it IS a helpful tool. The opportunity to collapse a long comment after reading it, so that you don't need to scroll down endless pages, would be wonderful. DB's platform is a little outmoded after all and it would be a step into the right direction.
E.g. I realized I tend to only read the comments on the first page, because it becomes too much to read or scroll down to keep the overview where which conversation took place etc.

I hope, I'm not building up pressure, mary.

0

About adapting the plugin for Firefox: have you considered using Greasemonkey? I think it also uses Javascript so you probably won't have to make much changes.

0

I'm a Firefox person too. You are not alone.

0

@whimsyful, Firefox uses javascript too! It's just that their framework/getting started part and debugging is a bit more complicated vs Chrome.

I did get excited googling Greasemonkey... but it seems like a half-abandoned project currently. :( And I need to access local storage to store the beanies' custom settings. It says in the wiki that FF restricts Greasemonkey with that. Then it goes on to say that Greasemonkey isn't supported as of xyz version.

I think I had better suck it up and just slog through the docu. It would be hard, but worth it later to have better understanding of how it works.

Thanks for the suggestion though. They say some devs put up legacy greasemonkey code on github. Maybe I can check that out too for reference.

In this instance I can understand Shin Se Gi's violent outburst. As she left the car, he vowed if Alex hurt her, Alex would die as a result. At the heart of it, Shin Se Gi was created to protect Oh Ri Jin's life. Knowing a man had laid a hand on her would be too much for him to hold back.

Ahn Yo Sub....The interactions with Oh Ri Jin and Ahn Yo Sub are always so touching.
She treats him with reverence mixed with a touch of fear. He seems to think she's a bit dim, but is confident she is only one that can help Cho Do Hyun and the other personalities.
His self-awareness and his farewell was bittersweet.

I adore Yo Sub. how many such young guys I have met? there are very few grown ups who even try to understand them everyone seems to write teenagers off as "just this faze you have to ignore". that is just like shutting someone in a basement though. his brief moments with Ri Jin are so loaded with meanings.

I feel you summed up Yo Sub's character perfectly. I wish he had just a moment more.

Also, I can totally side with Se Gi up to killing him. He knows what kid of trash Ales is. Also his 'birth' was to save Ri Jin, so completely understandable.

KMHM *spoilers* I agree, the twists have been handled exceptionally well in this drama so that when we come out on the other end, the story still makes sense. Gah - the car scene where Ri Jin gives her name as a present - so healing. The problem is she has to do it six more times ...

I've been a Ri On fan all along. He has stayed by his "sister's" side protecting her and now that he can't protect her any longer, it hurts him to watch her go through her pain of regaining her memories. It is hard to watch both Ri Jin and Do Hyun's physical pain along with mental anguish. And how very creepy is the father and the unspoken possibility of more than just hitting going on - creep. Hooray for the Mom who whisked Do Hyun (girl) away and told with grandmother not to look for her.

Yoo Na looks so good in pale pink :) They should sell the pjs and lipstick as a set ~

I'm not sure if In Time With You originally was the TW version...cause that's the only version I watched. That one, I really enjoyed. I never totally warmed up to the heroine, and still think that the hero of the OTP deserves someone who appreciates him more....but anyway, overall I enjoyed it. I love the ending...I was going to say what I love about it, but then perhaps it would count as a spoiler, and wouldn't want to spoil the fun for you :) I'd recommend watching it.

But so far so good, (am missing HD quality video's and good sub quality though, am so spoiled with ready availability of good video quality Korean dramas) Let me know if you know a a good site to watch it on! Thanks again.

Hi Beanies,
Happy weekend. Not many dramas on my list at present, so I’m whiling my time away with browsing for casting news. 2015 seems like a promising year for Korean dramas.
Gatbsy : definitely on board coz this is from the Hong sisters but if KWB and KS confirm, it’ll make my day.
Producer: I’ve loved GHJ in everything I saw her in (Master’s Sun, Biscuit Teacher, IOTL, Greatest Love), and it will definitely be interesting if she is cast opposite KSH in this one. I only hope that CTH gets a meaty role too.
Scholar who walks in the night: Vampires of the Joseon era with Han Groo cross-dressing as a man? Count me in. I’d not be half as interested if she doesn’t play the lead though.
In Time with you: I loved the original drama, so I can’t wait to watch the Korean version of it. HJW, please accept this. Someone suggested that KRW should be offered the lead opp her. That would be awesome.
Now, Jang Nara is in the news for another upcoming drama. Was any week as good as this?

Hi.
how are you doing? more a cinema than drama week for me.
this time I am glad to recommend another Estonian movie to you, so little that we make them, but this is sort of a very important historical subject.
It is called 1944 and it is set during the second Soviet occupation when the German army was retreating and the Red Army was coming. well in 1941 many estonians were forced to join the red army, then in 1943 the german army, believe me, they did not want to go borther against brother. and in 1944 the Red army sent pretty much the last of the men into that slaughterhouse called WWII we didnt give shit about. The movie shows the inhuman /human side of war, from both sides, how the land is so small you literally fight in your own back yard. LITERALLY. and how there are bad and worse joices, every meal can be your last, you never know when the bullet hits you.
It is not a romance, there is a hint of romance when a guy delivers a letter to the sister of a guy he killed (he can´t say it to her tho) and then another guy delivers HIS letter when he gets killed. to the same woman. But it is a romance in a sense that there is so few of us we all have to be in love with each other if we want to survive, men or women, regardless. love and save or hate and die.
the positive in the movie are seriously handsome fellas playing the young soldiers, lots of explosions and stuff if you like that.
the negative side is BOYS ONLY KNOW HOW TO BREAK THINGS BUT WHO IS GONNA CLEAN UP AFTER YOU AND REBUILD ALL THE SHIT? 450 year old stone fences covered in moss... well that was probably a replica dunno how they done it, I hope it was not a REAL stone fence that tank ran over cause damn. but it did happen during war. that they destroyed hundreds of years old objects

but I must say, the REAL fight in the MOVIE was between veteran actors vs the young "flower boys". Dunno who one but I have a feeling veterans had a slight leverage over the young guns. I mean, if you put a guy who has been in TEN movies together with guys who are in their FIRST...but you know, the leverage is not huge. Those flower boys held their own pretty well.

so this inspires my question this week: drama rookies who have best held their own against the veteran actors, male or female. recent or not so recent, but which of the young actors do you think have really stood their ground when put in the same drama with seasoned veterans? in the sense of skills, being convincing and running the whole show.

watching: Kill Me Heal Me. uh I think I nearly cried this week. and then I was twisted into a knot laughing, squealing, wiggling like a cat intoxicated by valerian root. how embarrassing, and just after we got the new house rules ...

and a song to this week post is Elina Born, Enough. somehow it says everything I feel - "coming home from the movies, wondering how real it is, that hopes and dreams drain of sorrow and happy end always follows" just as the lyrics say.
Song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uamNYNkRrq4
Lyrics here: http://sasslantis.ee/lyrics-elina_born-enough
"take it back rewind just a little bit" ... ah yes, rewind. how did all those characters become so dear? how will we say goodbye ( poor die-hard Se Gi fans btw, from Viki comments it seems their addiction is overwhelming. not surprised if we have people with split personality acting like Se Gi after the drama ends. and I might pretend I am Perry and steal a boat from our harbor, although I can´t sail...) cause "I don´t wanna give up on you...somehow thatś not enough" ! I could watch the "Girls´Night with your (ex/ future) boyfriend for like, indefinitely. I am going to miss you, Yo Na! This drama doesn´t heal me at all, It turns us all nuts.

That's exactly what I was talking about this week, what with civil wars and ISIL and stuff. IF/when they stop fighting, there'll be no-one left to rule over!

Wow, it’s March!! Spring is coming Beanies! But now on to the important stuff…

Ho-Gu: One of the many families I’m loving right now in kdramas. So adorable. And I’m super happy with Choi Woo-Shik and Im Seulong in this. Seriously. I know it’s not a dramatic show but they’re hitting all the right notes. I was so nervous for Choi Woo-Shik’s first lead role but he’s great. And I had no idea that Im Seulong could genuinely be funny. (Anyone know how this show is being received in Korea?)

Blood: I don’t if it’s actually improved or I’m just getting used to it but I found the show much easier to watch this week. Our lead is also *gasp* smiling and smirking up a storm. It’s at least letting some personality start to come through. But I’m still eh on the plot, not terribly into the acting, and not a fan of the vampire makeup. Things are advancing slightly faster than I thought though some I’m hoping for the plot to take some new twists soon.

Running Man: I really liked this week! I still have some issues with their editing this time but I liked both guest teams and it seemed fun…although honestly shame on ZE:A during their queen’s dodgeball. I was also glad to see their leader was on and seems to doing well.

Unkind Women: Only one episode in and I think I’ll try to watch more today. I’m a little concerned that it’s just going to be….depressing? (Although I love a lot of their soundtrack choices – they make me laugh). I mostly gave this show a chance because of Mary and her man (whom I haven’t seen in anything – don’t kill me). But he’s barely in episode one. So…I’m hoping there’s a bit more lightheartedness going forward but perhaps not. Anyone have non-spoiler thoughts on if I should continue?

KMHM: (I’ve seen through episode 17 so SPOILERS through 17) I knew the melodrama was coming but SO MUCH. Sigh. I want my fun back. I think they could be more succinct with the flashbacks. I’m also not at all bothered that a little boy lit a fire to end abuse. I mean, really, people do a lot of things against abusers. I hope there’s some time to enjoy the fun once again before the end of the show and not just thrown in for the last 30 minutes of the show or something.

---
Other thoughts:
- Producer is looking amazing! I cannot wait.
- The Technicians is up on DF so I’m definitely going to watch that this weekend
- How did I not get to SOGC this week?! Ack, must remedy!
- Choi Jin Hyuk sang Radiohead’s “Creep” at what is basically his goodbye fanmeet. I’ve seen other Korean celebrities sing this song too. It seems popular? I mean, I like the song but it seems like an odd one to take off right now in Korea.
- I’m pretty majorly behind in both Spy and Heart-to-Heart, any votes for which I try to catch up with first?
- My bestie had her baby girl! Everyone is healthy and doing well and I finally get to be an 'aunt'!

I read that she's always maintained a pale skin. I use the word "maintain" because much effort has to be put in to achieve it. Every summer I look like a dried up raisin by August when I don't even intentionally tan.

For her, there really isn't much can be done, unless some bronzer? But that doesn't seem to be popular in Korea.

0

Oh no, I just meant I think it's funny that she's paler!! I don't really think the makeup artists can (or should) do anything on that front. My issue is really just that I don't like their transformative makeup.

0

@4D

You are more perceptive than I about the transformation. I mostly just notice the growing claws and the red around the eyes. I do like Ji Sang's vamp emerald eye color.

Referencing the youtube link posted by @owl somewhere below. Other people thought she also played a vampire because she's so pale. I guess the good thing, within this drama universe, is that people are used to Ri Ta being so pale, just-as-pale Ji Sang doesn't get noticed for it.

0

So Blood. I've taken up the cause of recapping, or at least trying my hand at it. Only the first 2 eps are up on my site (click owl). Non spoiler-y for unkind women. Watched two episodes. It's still a bit slow for setup but moving we do have 4 leading ladies. They don't just mope about, there is some moping but for the plot a bit is expected especially for hyun sook but what happens after is Good. There's a reason it's called unkind women. Fairly certain they are not going to be pushovers or damsels in distress

Also so far it isn't really cliche. the plot may have familiar elements but they definitely bring more to the table. I'm sold after the end of episode 2. That ending is spectacular. I'd suggest the last few minutes to anyone just for a good laugh

(But it's good to want to continue watching no matter the reason...right?)

Your comments is super encouraging though so I'll have to continue :) I actually like the idea of having so many female leads but I hope they're ones that are fully realized (and I think they will be). They don't have to all be kind of sympathetic but they do need to be multi-dimensional.

Some little things bug me but mostly I hate the way it's edited for time management. I don't like when they cut our chunks of the games, or entire games themselves, and then you get like a one second clip and are told the change in score. I had actually been looking forward to seeing the weak teams fight each other...and then it just jumped and was like, oh everybody is tied, let's do another round!

Hello everyone!!!
Been busy to keep up with real life and virtual life.. haha

So many casting news these days, it's hard to keep up with who's who in what drama and what timeslot? :p
The problem for me, not even once about my fave actress, Moon Geun Young. Where is she hiding?? Never heard any news or project from her since her last project, movie "Sado" with YAI.

Dramas this week:
Heard It Through The Grapevine: Heads, if you read this, I've been patiently waiting your recaps. Sincerely, your fan.
I never watch black comedy in Korean movie/drama and it seems the drama manages just fine. I love everything about it, even the ridiculous haughty parents and the dim lightning! Now, I can't wait for ep 5 because the preview seems so freaking adorable!

Kill Me Heal Me: Still on ep 16 because I can't bring myself to watch ep 17-18.. Hopefully the writer don't ruin the ending

I also watched the last episode of What Happened In Bali. Finally, I know what's the fuss about the drama's ending. Heartbreaking indeed and I still can't accept it.. I need time to heal myself from my poor broken heart...

------------------------------------------
On upcoming dramas, Producer and Jejudo Gatsby looks fun! But then today comes the news of ITWY remake with HJW as lead and the male lead is yet to be casted... Let's hope this drama can save sinking ship SBS. Because KBS have Producer+School 2015+Descendants of Sun, while MBC have Hwajung+Jejudo Gatsby+Night Scholar.

Blood - Out of fairness, I gave it a chance. ...... Needless to say, we didn't click. Oh well. ..... Ji Jin-hee, though, lookin' great as always.

On a thread I commented on last week someone replied that people don't dump dramas after about 10 episodes (or something like that) and it got me thinking. So I went back and looked at my drama watching history and I realized I have dropped quite a few dramas after sticking with them for more than half their run. I dropped Trot Lovers, H.S. Love On, Hyde J & I, Birth of a Beauty, and Tomorrow's Cantabile, just to name some. All of these I tried to watch until the end. All of these shows I really liked at the beginning, but all of them (at some time) either lost momentum, or went stupid. (or maybe I just lost my desire to see what happened to the characters?)

Am I that disloyal? Am I that unique? At the moment I'm going through cancer (for the 3rd time) so if a show can't take my mind off of my real life garbage, then I don't have much patience. But even before this, for example, like in Trot Lovers, if a show all of a sudden makes a U-turn into murder and stupidity, where it had seemed to me to be a light comedy (with cool music) I can't sit though another episode.

I try not to go onto drama threads where everyone is raving about "their show" and post, "THIS SUCKS." But if I like a show, and a current episode seems disappointing, I will post, "I like this show, but this week was weak."

Maybe I just need to get a thicker skin.

So sorry to hear about the cancer, sending positive thoughts. I used to be the type that stuck with a series to the end no matter how bad. Then I realised that life is short, I actually don't start most shows unless I hear there is a buzz around them from say episode 4-6. The exception is if I really already like the premise (eg Miseang, Ho Gu's Love) that I watch them from the start. So I say watch what interests you, you can read recaps to drown out any guilt :-)

No, please don't change.

Saying you were disappointed by a certain episode is okay. Even dropping by a recap of a show you dropped to say goodbye to beanies you previously squeed with is okay.

But I hope you don't go back regularly to the comments of a show you drop only to say, "this show sucks, I've dropped it a long time ago". Because (1) that's kind of uselessly annoying, and (2) you need to MOVE ON from a show you decided to drop!

There are sooooooo many new shows coming out, esp now that the cable channels regularly churn out stuff. No need to dwell on a show you drop. You can just easily find one that suits you. They're like boyfriends. Once you realize they're bad, drop them and leave. Don't dwell. You deserve better! :D

I have dropped a fair few dramas after 10 episodes. My Spring Days for example, and Trot Lovers for me as well. That could have been soooo much better.

I understand your need for an absorbing, diverting drama experience at this point in your life. God bless you.

I have also, when a drama hits the mid-series doldrums, skipped 4 to 6 episodes to bypass the angsty bs and cherry-pick the happy ending.

I think that since we have huge number of dramas to choose from we might be a little spoiled. Not complaining!

I drop nearly everything. Either a series goes on too long or it takes a turn into things I dont like, and, as far as I'm concerned, this is a writing and directing problem, not a viewer problem. A well written show will have me watching it all. For instance, Sweden Laundry is genius.

So dont feel bad about it because it's not worth the energy.

Wag_a_Muffin, sorry to read about your illness.

About dropping dramas. If that is a reason to be guilty, I'm guilty too. I tried with many dramas for a long time, because so many loved it throughout the net and I just couldn't see it. Most recent example is Kill Me Heal Me. I don't get the appeal. At. All. Or Can You Hear My Heart. Or God's Gift. With all dramas I tried at least 8 painfully long episodes. Sometimes I'm wiser. Pinocchio didn't last longer than 26 minutes.
No need to worry about a bad series, there are enough good ones out there. It's your taste, your decision.

Sending lost of good vibes. Get better soon. Hwaiting!

It's not just you.

I find myself abandoning dramas even past 10 episodes. Mostly it seems that the drama will start out good like trot lovers but then it goes wonky and i find myself asking why they went with amnesia. I'm like hello i signed up for a romcom with singing not whatever this is.

Or a I'll end up ditching before the final episodes. usually the plot had been skewed or it just seems as if the payoff isn't possible. Where the otp is so far off track that i know i won't be sold on a forced happy ending.

Also i hope you're finding a good drama to raise your spirits. I'm recommending unkind women there's drama but the characters have depth. From your post i assume we may have similar taste

But if I don't care enough about what's happening this episode to even read a recap, I know that show is probably in my "it's toast" pile.

Spy is dangling in the do-I-dump-it? category for me right now. It's a toss up between the thought that I've invested so much time watching it that I should finish it up and I'm not sure if I will care either way about the ending so why bother.

Here's to good days ahead for you with improved health, Wag_a_Muffin.

I dump loads of shows even if I'm half way through or even near the end. Sometimes a show has just gone downhill so badly and I can't stand watching it anymore (like recently with Heart to Heart, which I stopped watching after episode 10). Sometimes you do just stop caring about the characters, in which case, give it up.

In the past I used to suffer through shows for certain favourite actors even if I hated the show, which honestly is a massive waste of time. Nowadays I dump whatever show I like, whenever I like. If you're not enjoying it, don't bother. I definitely watch less shows than I used to, but the shows I do watch to the end I enjoy alot and I have fond memories of watching them and discussing them with my best friend.

Also, I wish you the best :').

I'm sending you ninja cancer fighting vibes.

I'm the same with dramas, I drop them (or just drift away, never to return) if I have to force myself to watch them. I keep a chart, too, so I can tell you at which episode I gave up (sometimes even to the minute). I've made it to the second to last episode with a couple dramas, then couldn't bear to watch the final one.

I remember the first time I realized I could do that with books, too!

I drop dramas if they are not entertaining at any point in the series. There are several that I watched all the way up to the second last one, and never bothered to finish.

I never finished Gumiho or The Princess Man.

In some cases, I think I would have enjoyed the overall experience of dramas if I hadn't watched the last one - Big Love, for example. I shouldn't have watched the last two!!
Warrior Baek Dong Soo - DON"T watch the last one!!

There are sooooo many shows out there that ARE good, it isn't worth our precious time to keep your mind on a show that you don't enjoy. The exception is if everyone says, "Oh, it gets better. Don't drop it."

Sending positive thoughts for your health. As my friend Carole McDonnell, dbeaner and writer, has pointed out, the positive thoughts are weapons against what is trying to ail you.

Hi. I hope you get well.

I'm surprised you managed to get to 10 episodes for so many dramas and don't think there's anything wrong with having high expectations. Nowadays, I don't watch dramas if they don't hook me within the first 10 minutes unless I receive a good recommendation. Healer's first episode was disappointing for me, but I continued it because all of the attention it got. The show seemed to have stuck to what it's good at and ended up being a solid drama for me. Why watch decent dramas when you can watch great ones?

Get well soon. A third battle? Continuous battles are very tiring sometimes. Definitely don't do anything you don't want to do. Feeling compelled only adds to the spiritual fatigue. Everything should be freeing. I always hated making voluntary stuff mandatory and piling responsibilities and "musts" upon myself. When it comes to dramas, I've gotten good at letting some shows go if i feel like it. In that way i validate my feelings. Having lived in a world where people always want me to prove my feelings are valid, I'm always happy when i can stop doing something simply because I'm not happy with it. When it comes to harrowing shows, if i feel the drama is helping me deal with some personal issue, I try to muddle through in the hope that i will be healed or helped by watching the theme play out.

Right now I'm watching Unkind Women because I love it that it's dealing with woundedness, forgiveness, retraumatization, etc. So although it's dark, I feel as if it'll bring some light at the end. It feels more real than Twinkle which I'm enjoying just for the thriller fun of it.

I stopped watching healer because of the lost child issue and kinda stood outside of its adoring circle. I didn't mind all its adorers, though.

Thanks. And I feel the same way. Just because I've dropped a show I still respect people who haven't. I mean, you don't have to feel the same way I do about shows, actors, writers, etc.
And my battles haven't been continuous. I thought I beat it back in 02, and then again in 07. So I've had big stretches of remission times.

Wag_a_Muffin: so sorry to hear about your cancer. I hope they caught it early, and that the treatment works quickly. If it was a drama, I guess it would be the bad friend from your past whom you hoped you'd never ever see again, dropping into your life and blackmailing you with past secrets.

There's no rhyme or reason for why I finish watching a show or drop it - I finished watching Birth of a Beauty and Medical Top Team, despite the lukewarm reception and dismal ratings (and silly story - yes, I admit it freely)!

I think it simply comes down to whether you're in the mood to watch it, given what's going on in your RL.

I used to stick with shows right to the (bitter) end, but recently I devote myself to shows, only to run out of steam just before the finale (like Healer - even though I enjoyed it a lot; or Secret Hotel - 'cause it just went downhill and nothing could save it). Maybe it's just RL butting in with Murphy's Law timing.

I do find the recaps, OT and blogs useful as a radar - if people are raving about a particularly good episode, then I'll check back in.

Oh dear, I drop most of the things I watch. Sometimes, they're too annoying so I stop watching but other times, I just felt like meh, I don't wanna watch it anymore. I never think like I should finish it since I already watched x number of episodes. It's a waste of time if you don't like it and you force yourself to finish it. I actually watched Master Sun probably until episode 14 and just stopped there. HAHAHA. So yeah, you're not the only one. Dramas need to be more interesting, not your fault.

And I hope you'll be feeling better in the days to come. Praying for your health. Have a good day~~

Hello all:

So many good dramas on this season! I've had to really pick and choose or I'd be using up all my time on dramas.

Unkind Women: Wow! This drama is so good. It's a very painful watch though. All the layers of woundedness, trauma, retraumatization, growing self-knowledge, shame, redemption. It's been ages since I saw a story where someone sets out to work out her redemption. Last story i can think of off-hand was The Mission with Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons. The love story hasn't started yet. Although i was seriously happy when Mr hottie kendo master "recognized" heroine's voice. That rarely happens in dramas. The only troublesom part...which made me almost drop it is the possible return of a certain person. I felt very upset when that suddenly popped up.

Grapevine: Wow! This is one beautiful, realistic, classy drama! I love everything about it. Can't praise Lee Joon more. The subtle parental evil gets me so angry but am glad the marriage is final. (I Hope.)

My Heart, twinkle twinkle: Heroine is actually gonna discuss her suspicions with Baddie hubby? Seriously? I was kinda assuming she wouldn't face-off with him. But now that she has... it makes me so happy in a way. Because one never knows what this drama is going to do and the writers never seem to take the obvious steps. They often seem to push past the viewer's expectations. What'll happen if heroine actually tells hero ALL she suspects? I hope he doesn't convince her about trusting him. Question: Is the good chaebol heir who gave apt to middle sister now married? And who is he married to?

Shine or Go Crazy: Am glad all the secrets are out. Really love second lead prince. So tragic. He has a noble side in addition to his evil side.

Am reading recaps for Hogu's Love instead of watching. I had to drop something.

That's it, I think. Happy weekend, all!

I agree that there are so many good dramas right now! I'm a bit sad you dropped HoGu as I think it's the tone that really makes the show and you can only get glimpses if that through recaps alone.

I'm glad to hear you like Unkind Women. I've only seen the first episode but wasn't sure if I should continue. It does feel like it might be depressing but then again I skipped Misaeng because I was concerned about that...and it seems like I missed the show of the year.

So once some of the current ones end, I do hope to start it...I think it will also me nice to start it in better weather if that makes any sense.

Yes, better weather makes perfect sense. I don't know if this is what you meant for sure but sometimes I can't take anymore gray on a gray day and others I feel like crying anyway so I might as well, haha! I'm barely keeping current with my dramas so I understand. It is definitely worth watching (as I'm sure you've heard a billion times already :))

0

Yeah, it's pretty much like the no more grey on a grey day. Winter drives me a little batty. I don't get depressed like some people do, but there's still sort of a numbness in winter and I prefer to go for happier shows or escapism during the winter.

0

I miss Hogu. I might try to catch up. I'm about two or three episodes behind, i think.

I suspect Unkind Women will be a harrowing painful journey. It's not super-makjangey. It felt very real but then episode 4 brings back...aargh! Let's just say that the kdrama tradition of bringing back folks long thought of as dead.....may have reared its head. Kinda disappointed me. Am hoping I'm wrong.

Totally carthatic. In the Aristotlean way:Identification and fear. It's good seeing a character I can identify with or imitate. I heard Unkind is doing well in the rangs in Korea and I suspect it's because of the identification. Lots of healing when one can say, "I'm not the only person wounded in this way. I am not the ony one who is a loser or an idiot or who had a cruel teacher or who didn't marry a prince." It's a tough watch, def. Because the actresses show anger and hurt so well. The hurts are so palpable and so banal that it almost indites certain kinds of viewers. Because it's not cartoony. And it doesn't feel nihilistic.

These women are the anti-Cinderellas...they dedicated their lives to families, to being good wives, good mothers, good daughters. They lived for their daughters and made their daughters live for them.and their lost dreams.Didn't do them any good. They were all decent, kind, victimized but money, great school skillz, and handsome chaebols or rich rock stars were dreams and not healing at all. But you know they'll find a way to be bealed and triumphant in the end.

I know, I just love In-sang's hopeful determination. I almost cried when Ah-Sung apologized in a text to In-Sang for doubting his parents. It's not that their manipulation is unexpected, it's just that the high school naivete about how things will move forward is heart breaking in contrast to that. I hate the feeling that I get that no matter how long the young couple drag out their hopefulness, in the end his parents will prevail and they know that. I worry for the baby's fate. I am hoping I am wrong. I find it interesting that some stories take the same situation and in it the parents insist on marriage.

And am hoping all the other issues that have been simmering in this family will pull the parents' focus away from the kids. In this case, i WANT a Cinderella ending. Or whatever fairytale it is that talks about bringing a new wife/daughter into the family.

This week, we had the (level 1) Bhutanese refugees join our class. Wow! That was hard. But the Korean and Japanese ladies were really gracious.

I'd say teach the class. Folks love it that you love their culture. Take a harder class; mutual learning.

And eldest sister, I kinda feel sorry for her that she knows that hubby is crazy. She's been living with him, sleeping with him, she's having his baby... She did seem to care for him somewhat. But now? She's terrified and angry. Not sure what's gonna happen between them now. He shouldn't have held back on the info about Soon Jung, that's going to be her main issue. And what is it about him and his butt-slapping his wife? It could be a turn-on if it didn't feel so like he was slapping a call-girl. It bothers me. Also, he said he really likes it when he sees her angry side. That is a bit of a turn on for him. So not sure how he'll react to wifey's anger. will he get into a deeper twisted need to please her? The noble sainted figure? Or does he have it in him to abuse sainted wifey?

The butt slaps, I know! I have no idea. She's even confused by it, lol. He seems to think it's a display of affection, but she just feels really awkward about it. I'm not going to be surprised at all if he ends up abusing her in some way. If he thinks he's going to lose her, he'd probably either snap and attack her, or he'd threaten her to keep him by her side. He's not going to let her go, that's for sure. I hope she doesn't just forgive him, now that would be crazy.

I'm hoping that Lee Pil Mo becomes a defence for Soon Jung, when brother-in-law finally finds her and tries to get rid of her. Their friendship is growing slowly but surely.

Meanwhile, Soon Jung has the supermarket heir on her side as well! She's doing well, that girl! I love that guy, he's such a genuinely decent person.

Been super busy, yet somehow indulgent. Hope it won't ruin me. Been planning to watch other Asian dramas for ages, so I started a few in the midst of chaos since they're shorter.

Suteki na Sen Taxi: It was perfect for what I needed. Not too bizarre, funny and grounded by charming lead and relatable cameos, who were interesting if not all likeable. Also, with his looks I wasn't expecting our taxi driver to be so boyish and erm have such everyday human hangups. Cute, but no less attractive. I hope there is a second season.

Started Platonic, only on ep 3 but enjoying it. Hesitate from stating any firm opinions as to what's going on as it may change.

Suud sai Pan (sp?): Shuk, not sure if you'll see this but YOU DID THIS TO ME!!! Let's just say I'm glad I have a forgiving sense of humor (such that I find all this madness funny).

Kdramas: Only caught up on KMHM. Not really a spoiler but haha. Oh Rij-in, what will you do? He's your man, your brother's fangirl, and your dad's dongsaeng at the same time. Too funny. At least mom gets a (mostly) perfect son-in-law?

The episodic series obviously goes in much more depth than the Nadech movie. I thought it was on par with Gaskitsal in terms of the harsh scenes and violent behavior. But like the SK drama, it touches on a dark moment in history, but still manages to find the humanity in it all. It's very moving.

I don't stalk any celebrities, Korean or otherwise, on Instagram or other social media, because as long as they're not out there raping or murdering I couldn't care less about their personal lives. It's their life they can do whatever they want with it. However their are a few Korean celebrities whose Instagram accounts I glance at once every few months just to see them being pretty and not acting, it always annoys me when I see people in comments asking them to comment in English the ones that can frequently do. I find that almost as annoying as people who ask fansubbers to hurry. Fansubbers are people who by definition fans sharing their passion with other fans, they don't get pain they take time out of their own I'm assuming busy schedules to provide subs for free to ask them to hurry is akin to asking a person dying of thirst for water.

I have a question about abortion in Korea. In a lot of dramas I see women get or almost get abortions and they appear to be in perfectly legit clean sterile clinics/hospitals. However I've also seen in at least one drama abortion being referred to as illegal. So I guess my question is is abortion illegal in Korea or not? I could do my own research but I'm feeling lazy today.

Ho-gu's Love- I appear to be the only one but I actually like Do-hee it's Ho-gu I have a problem with. Someone needs to kick his stupid a** in the balls and wake him up.

Kill Ma, Heal Me- I'm starting to worry about the end, there's only one week left.

Absorption is illegal in Korea, however, it seems like it's also rather prevalent. I want to say it's kind of like prostitution....technically illegal but still happens.

KMHM: what do you mean, worry about the end? you make me nervous. Don´t tell me, you think.... kill...me....

maybe it means "Do Hyun" has to disappear along with the others and let Mr X take over?

I won´t accept the "death" of any of them :-(

well, yeah. I hope we can tie up loose ends and give everyone a happy ending. even the grandma deserves a GOOD ending, cause after all, no one should be mean to old people.

the only thing I am not satisfied with is that the second lead female had no real point at all. why did we even waste time on her? hope they are not going to come with some forced marriage plan. cause our leads promised AGAIN they will face whatever hardships TOGETHER, and I expect neither of them to back out from the promise this time. ohhhh beware, drama, I have a good memory for what has been promised. you also promised Perry a boat. well, he kinda IS a boat, but... I want him to totally jacksparrow it out of the harbor with a bottle of rum in his hand.

sidenote: how much did I love Yo Sub dissing Omegas novel haha brutal

Happy Friday, everyone!

It's been a great week for VIXX fans. ^.^

Persevere, Gu Hae Ra: you know, I'm so in love with how hopeful and uplifting this show is...and yet, it seems to enjoy mercilessly wringing the tears out of me. I think just about every character got in at least a pang of sympathy, most of all Se Jong. The whole time he and Ray were drunk and smiling together, I was just waiting for Se Jong to call Ray Se Chan, and then the prologue hit--and even though I expected it, it hit me hard. Like, hold-up, I-need-a-minute-(or an hour)-to-finish-sobbing hard.

Hyde, Jekyll, Me: I've only watched one episode this week so far, but I still really like it. Secretary Keon is my favorite.

Running Man: such an exciting episode! Both Shinhwa and ZE:A were great fun and formidable opponents, but the cast's teamwork (and luck!) are no joke.

Having a free afternoon, I decided to try one of the KBS Drama Specials, and decided on The Tale of the Bookworm. I definitely recommend it! Exciting, funny, and stirring, with some cool detective work, too.

My mom and I only have a couple of episodes left in You From Another Star, and she's really dreading having to let it go... Meanwhile I'm trying to decide what to show her next. (Or what to watch together that I haven't seen.) Hmm decisions.

Have a great weekend!

So this week's Kill Me Heal Me episodes haven't been recapped yet but can I please say how I got the chills in episode 16, realising just what they'd done to the two kids with the name Cha Do-hyun? So simple, but so evilly effective.

Heard It Through the Grapevine - I guess we can take it that Heads isn't going to continue recaps so spoilers are ok? Because I LOVE THIS DRAMA. I love how our resident rich parents are driven almost out of their minds by the consequences of their perfect son's lone messup. I love their creepy house which is a literal reconstructed old house in the shell of a modern house (obvious allegory) I love how In-sang is such a wimp (and an idealist.....such a nightmare for parents like his, who would prefer to say they raised him to have principles when they actually want him to put status etc first). I love how his parents are so businesslike and hers such dragons out to look out for their daughter even in the face of obvious and tempting bribes. I love how our two teenage lovebirds are so awkward sometimes, like actual teenagers (but they didn't skimp on the skinship!). And I love how it's all coming crashing down around the Han household and all they can do is smile and pretend that they were supportive of In-sang and Bom getting married all along. Can't wait for next Monday!

There's been a lot of very promising casting rumours coming through in the last couple of weeks....I still have my fingers crossed for Kang Sora and Kim Woo-bin in the Hong sisters drama, and for Han Groo finally getting a Big 3 lead role, and for Gong Hyo-jin in Producer and Jang Nara in Hello Monster. I'm so, so glad that networks are finally starting to realise that younger actresses who show talent are the ones they should cast in their drama leads!

on the jdrama front -

Ouroboros - caught up to episode 5, and I am genuinely surprised by Yuiko-sensei's status as a probable undercover cop. I think we're finally going to get more happening in the story, and I rather like the Public Safety loose cannons because at least they keep our heroes on their toes. (also, I smell a lowkey one-sided kind of love line between Ikuo and Hibino, didn't see that one coming either.

Date - I LOVE THIS ONE. xxxHolic made me a fangirl for Anne, and Date is just making me an even bigger one. And it's even better because the roles are so different - she's a champ at using her distinctive looks and height to emphasise just how different Yoriko is from the people around her.

on the movie front, I re-watched Ajusshi a.k.a. The Man From Nowhere this week, because I was having a fit of Won Bin nostalgia. It really made me wish he'd just pick another acting project already, because it's a shame to think his career as an actor has basically ended at the age of 32, when he was that good. And it also reminded me of just how adorable baby Kim Sae-ron was, I can't believe she's a teenager now!

Romantic jdramas.... I really liked Honey & Clover, but I saw it years and years ago so no idea how it holds up.

And of course there is the iconic Hana Yori Dango, which imo did its main romance a lot better than Boys Over Flowers. Though I don't know if everyone finds that romantic, lol.

Takuya Kimura: Pride & Long Vacation are the ones I would recommend.

Tatta Hitotsu no Koi is good too. A bit melo but surprisingly realistic. And love triangle free!

I also love Nagareboshi and Arifureta Kiseki, though both of these are serious dramas that are more than just about romance.

More fun ones would be Kimi wa Petto and Love Shuffle.

Spoiler Alert for Date

just finished Date Eps 5. It is hilarious. Anne is so blunt, she booked a restaurant for suppon(Pelodiscus sinensis). Suppon is considered a delicacy to boost up male stamina! She is so forthcoming towards her BF , she ended up intimidating him.
I like him for his genuine feeling where he just does not take kiss and sex lightly.
Last scene was like' wow', I did not expect that this twist was coming.
When it comes to the writing, this is really good. I like Date and I hear from grapevine(?) for their comedy tone( yet the core issues are serious and thought provoking in both dramas)

Required fields are marked *

I think my favourite part of her planning the kiss & sex to the smallest detail was when she calls the love hotel and tries to make a reservation, and then goes "Which hotel doesn't make reservations?" Bwahahahaha...

The twist at the end is great, because however this drama is going to develop, it's going to not follow the rules that often come engraved in dramas (I'm trying to say too much here). Well, not that I have any doubts about the end pairing, but that was a nice twist to spice things up.

I love how they are such a perfect fit – they both have so much that they can learn from each other. They might have other admirers that would essentially just accept them as they are, but Yoriko and Takumi's relationship is meaningful because they have to overcome hurdles and challenge themselves to leave the little bubble world they have each created for themselves.

Unfortunately I have little to add to OT today. RL totally won this week and I have watched zero dramas. So I’m behind on everything.

But I wanted to stop by and say hello and ask a question—Has anyone been getting denied access to the site when trying to post comments?

It happened to me a few times in the last two days. I get redirected to a screen about a spam plugin and saying I needed to contact the admin for full access. Then it has a box to enter my email address and send a message.
I’ve never spammed the site (or any site or email for that matter) so I wondered if it’s just a bug. One of my comments went through afterwards (and if you’re reading this, this one went through too.

That wasn't my intent, but it has crossed my mind a few times in such cases when a complex could be argued as a motivation for love. Otherwise it really ruins my feels when a girl's honey reminds her of daddy. Too Freudian.

Best example is MOH w/ the sister and Song Jong-ho. She was all "your hug is like the oceans and mountains" me: aww till she finishes "it felt like daddy's hug" me:...erm he: "I'll be your dad tonight" me: *gagging*

But no you didn't sound pervy but I can understand why we don't see it in dramaland (or anywhere else for that matrer) very often or if at all. It's a whole lot to take. I was surprised at the prevalence of fauxcest when I first started watching dramas--it just seemed weird and it's one of those things I've never been able to overlook as much as the other aspects of dramaland I don't necessarily like.

Spent the week in snowy Colorado. It was pretty to see the world so white. So glad to be back to the spring with all the grape hyacinths and daffodils, though.

Watched:
Kill Me, Heal Me--The best thing about this show is Ji Sung. Otherwise the plot has me completely confused. Is Ri Jin really going to end up with a multiple personality partner? Or will he be completely healed? Personally, I wouldn't take the chance on someone so messed up. Seems like pain for the rest of your life.

Hyde, Jekyl, & Me--This one has gotten a lot better as it has progressed. I love that the love triangle is with two sides of the same man. But how to resolve it? Please, please, please...don't make Robin go away. Still fascinated that with Yoon Tae-joo/Lee Soo-hyun, the drama has two Hyde/Jekylls. Oh, and I'm glad Dr. Kang was finally rescued so she can go to the bathroom.

What Happens to My Family--Making my way through the last episode. I'm dragging it out because I don't want it to end. Haha. I stopped tearing up about the father though. Am I cold hearted to want him to die already so the family can move on?

BTW--If you liked What Happens to My Family, you will probably like another family drama, A Little Love Never Hurts. It's funny and sad and heartfelt and healing all at once.

Heart to Heart--Still watching despite the noble idiocy.

Please take the snow on the East Coast. I want to see daffodils too!

Years ago, GF and JB talked about the "stickiness" of a drama; that is, the ability of it to stay in your mind long after the show is over, regardless of their initial popularity.

Of our two DID shows, I am finding myself rewatching and thinking about scenes from HJM than KMHM.

It's not that Ji Sung isn't amazing with the different personalities, it's just something about the coolness of Seo-jin, and the subtle changes in his demeanor that make me really love Hyun Bin's characterization.

KMHM gives me (by far) more emotional upheaval episode to episode, but once I watch it, I really don't feel the urge to revisit.

Which one do you think is more "sticky"?

And yes, the bathroom comment made me laugh, because I was thinking that the entire time. :-)

I find I look forward to HJM and watch it first. KMHM is more upsetting due to the child abuse.

I, too, prefer the subtle characterization by Hyun Bin, although Ji Sung's antics are hilarious. It's just the way the two characters are written.

I don't find I think about the two dramas in between weeks, but I could imagine myself watching HJM again--depending on how it ends.

As for the snow, I know you have a bit much, but imagine having no snow/rain for four years straight. It's scary.

Happy weekend, Beanies! This week was super-busy, since it was my youngest's 10th birthday, so I made a strawberry cake (an amazing recipe made w/cooked strawberry puree & six egg whites - it's luscious).

I only caught up on drama viewing last night:

Blood: I agree with 4D - either it's getting marginally better, or I'm just used to it. Either way, Kwon Hyun Sang is still not getting more than two lines an episode (delivered standing awkwardly next to the bad guy), so it's pissing me off. I'm glad Ahn Jae Hyun is leaving behind the 'pretend to be an arrogant bastard' portion of the series, because he always just looks like he can't remember if he left the oven on.

The writing staff continues to prove how little they know about surgery, hospitals, and women in general.

Hyde, Jekyll, and Me: Sung Joon is skeery. Both he and Hyun Bin are gorgeous. What more is there to say?

What I Want to be Watching:

The Technicians: That looks like an awesome heist movie! Saturday night viewing, here I come. :)

No kdrama moment this week, I'm afraid, though I did make a patron's week by showing them the free television available on all corners of the internet. :)

Here's the recipe:

Hello Beanies. Rather upset because my car went ahead and died on me. Poor baby....she was my pride and joy. Now I have to resort to public transportation like the commoners. *sigh*

Dramaland is upsetting me too. I started out having fun watching KMHM and Heart to Heart but halfway through, I started losing interest. The former because of the excessive flashbacks that felt like filler and the latter for going into makjang territory in its storyline. I still see the dramas as good stories and think a lot of their elements are good....just my heart is no longer into it. Too much detachment going on.

On the other hand, Date is awesome. I just love looking at the heroine's physique. She's so angular and super tall and skinny and almost flat-chested.....exactly like my imaginary math robot that I drew for elementary school as a kid. That blew my mind and made me giddy. Meanwhile, hero's loserness continues to slowly become endearing. Still wish he can break out of the shell that socially cripples him. I enjoy how both characters get together, bicker (in a refreshingly non-Kdrama way), and make up in a way that is so heartfelt. And the mothers are wonderful. They match their own kids really well.

Agree on the flashback thing, it's way over the top, I know kdramas love them and all but they should learn how to use them properly.

Apologies to beebeeshing and Daehoney and the others who worked very hard to keep me interested in *KMHM*.

I did watch episodes 3+4, but that's how far I can go with the show.
After 4 episodes, still nothing that remotely resembles a plot. The "story" is incoherent both artistically and by terms of storytelling, and I really struggle with the weird and unnecessary overacting by Ji Sung.

After dropping that, I'm finally k-drama-free. Feels nice.

I really like Ji Sung's acting but I understand what you mean about the lack of plot. When my enthusiasm for the story was gone I started looking for something to blame and one of the reasons was the story going around in circles with no direction. However I have to say good plot is not very commonly found in kdramas anyway so it is like complaining about the lack of excellent acting if you know what I mean. :)

yeah, I agree with you on the lack of plot in KMHM, there's supposed to be something going on with the company but literally no one cares about it - including the hero. But even so, I really like it and it's one of the better dramas of 2015 so far even if its execution is off in some ways (too many repeated flashbacks).

It took till episode 6 to get me hooked, but I don't blame anyone for giving up earlier, I nearly did.

And your comment about Lee Bo Young being a RL Lawyer JJang - dunno why, but that's my image of her too! She and Ji Sung would be an easygoing, fun-loving pair, I think.

Who wants LBY and JS in a drama???? :D LBY is my one of the favourite actresses since IHYV .... I am surprised that they had dated publically for many years still had not been casted opposite each other!!!!

Do Koreans actually like seeing real couples on screen? I'm generally curious. Because there's often such a strong negative reaction when the find out people are even dating. I'm sure it's a bit different with these two those since they're both so loved.

They were in Save the Last Dance together. LBY's acting was terrible (she was just starting her career) but she wore some great clothes in that show.

So I had a kdrama scene last week,
I came to my friend's birthday party and I texted my dad to pick me up outside of the house. My dad told me to outside then, I came out with my two friends (boys) because they just want me to be sure safe ( I know, they're gentleman :D) and my dad came with his coworkers(friends). The funny thing is my freinds walk back a little and when I got in to the car, my dad's friends talk to me if they are following me for a reason hahaha until we got home they didn't stop asking me who's that friends

This just remind me yeongshin in Healer when bong sook was scared to go to her house because of the ajusshis outside her house.

I find Ji Sung super cute so I decided to watch Secret, and it reminded me of Boys Over Flowers for some reason. Not the acting but more the abusiveness somehow turning to love, maybe? And I really wish I knew Korean for when he is swearing as Yo Na because just the way he is speaking makes me laugh.
Even though Blood is totally ridiculous with any fight scene or medical/hospital scene, the trip to Jeju Island made me really like the OTP! Maybe because the vamp has changed his facial expressions? I do have to say that when the girl broke the glass vials of blood and then started to pick up the glass WITHOUT GLOVES ON!!!!! BECAUSE IT WAS FROM HEALTHY PATIENTS!!! I did have a vision that everyone in this hospital will eventually have the vampire virus.
It also makes me so happy when dramas pay attention to the secondary characters with their own interesting storylines and not just as devices to keep the OTP apart. I really like that in Ho Goo's Love, Heart to Heart and Shine or Go Crazy.

I am watching HoGu and Hyde. Dabbled with others, but I lack time/patience to watch an entire series if I am not in love with it.

I am of those "long comment" people, but it did inspire me to blog, and it has been an entire year now. Glad long-comment-haters have a way to relieve their stress now. Never intend to stress others, but some of us are incapable of being succinct.

Forgot to mention that last week, Owl and I learned
日 sun, day 일
時 time 시

This week, we will learn
月 moon, month 월

Did you know in Korean, months are simply the month plus number? For example, January is month 1, February is month 2, March is month 3, etc. 1월, 2월, 3월, etc. So in Hanja, it is just 一月, 二月, 三月, etc.

@Quirkstine

Thanks. This past Halloween, I bought some bite-size candies. Of course no trick-or-treaters showed. I ended up eating the 40 or so Snickers in 2 days.

Snickers is also the name of one of my feral cats: Twinkie, Tootsie, Snickers, and Mars. We had to name them for trap-neuter-return.

Clearly you have a thing for sweets. You and I will get along just fine.... Or not, if there's a sudden chocolate shortage. I'm warning you I fight dirty for chocolate. Mwehehehe. >:)

@Quirkstine

A friend of mine had a chocolate craving so bad that she stabbed herself in the thigh when she tried to cut a frozen chocolate Santa Claus with a kitchen knife. Emergency room and stitches!

If there is a chocolate shortage, I'll wait until after you two annihilate each other. Hehehe.

So 'day' is pronounced 'Ear'/'eel'? But I don't understand how you'd pronounce what looks like a double 'M' for "sun".

Required fields are marked *

they have no idea how scary real amnesia is - like for people who had a stroke and suddenly disappear from home nowhere to be found, ending up at a strangers´door, convinced they are someone else. Or talking weird to people on the street, remembering things that have not happened etc. They forget that they need to wear socks and shoes, or just ALL clothes, they can´t tell the difference on winter or spring. they can forget their name, or say a name of a friend who is dead. they become involuntary kleptomaniacs,. taking stuff thinking it actually does belong to them. I have dealt with a few cases of this, one was temporary, my granny had some cyst but it went away and her brain functioned normal after that. but she did disappear for 2 days without her shoes. the other case... in a friends family, all I can say.

amnesia in kdramas? such an innocent thing.

Hi all! After (a year and half?!) of lurking around DB I thought I'd seize the day and introduce myself. (Also two glasses of wine helps one seize the day.) I particulary enjoy the OT gang, I think it's kind of fun to see little snippets of everyone's week.

Also, it's Year of the Goat and being a Double Goat (Aries, and, well...Goat) I decided I'll stop overthinking too much and do as I please this year. Also, discussing dramas has to be better for me than playing too much Clash of Clans right? (?)

Anyway, currently super-enjoying Ho-gu's Love and for some reason Legendary Witch, even though that doesn't seem like my typical thing at all. I want to add another show to the mix, but was waiting until I could marathon one of these multiple personality ones. Also, even though I think the show is changing a lot and possibly not for the better, I'm very fond of Roommate. Thank goodness they are finally giving Oi something to do! I think she's super bored, she's clearly a smart cookie!

See you around the comments now that I've broken the seal? Cheers to a happy weekend!

Welcome to the world of actually posting! (It's addictive) I too especially love the OT group - because everyone gets to join in, and sometimes you just never watch the same shows as people so it's a chance to still sort of check in with people that you haven't read anything by all week

I agree, RM is a strange show, and harder to explain than a lot of kdrama plots.

As for the wine, you're in good company! It sorta comes with the territory, after watching the crazy plot twists and nobly idiotic characters!

As always, late to the OT.

Welcome Rhubarb! I just celebrated my 2nd year anniversary of Kdrama watching. The OT has been a wonderful place to learn of more joys to be found in all things Kdrama. What I didn't expect to find here, but happily have, are tips such as those on programming, Korean language learning and strawberry cake. Its a treasure trove of wisdom every week. And the occasional spats and differences being ironed out are reminiscent of the dramas we love - life imitating art?

I'm still enjoying KMHM, though I feel as though the writer has a lot of loose ends left to tie up in only 2 episodes. I really appreciated the return to laughs this week.

And Punch, wow! Though I'm only on ep. 8, due to real life and the need for sleep.

Speaking of which, that's what I must do next so I can hit the gym early to burn off the weight I gained from the last Let's Eat! Let's Eat 2, you will NOT do that to me again!

Oh btw, I just heard of a book about MPD or DID, called "Set this House in Order". It was recommended highly to me. Might be an interesting read after KMHM.

Kia ora KDrama whanau (hello KDrama family in Maori),
Omo omo omo - I am in Cha SeungWon heaven this week. So far have watched Ghost House, re-read Best Love recaps, found a yummy Korean restaurant when visiting Auckland and talked (read 'fan-girled') to an adjumma about City Hall, then yesterday omo*1000 found out that the unni in the Asian Supermarket once worked a job where she got to meet him in person. And said he was really nice! I now know someone who's met him whoop whoop! Trust me, in lil ol rural New Zealand that's like mega!!! hehehe

So I watched The Technicians last night, and really enjoyed it. It's a light, fun heist movie - don't go expecting to see anything new, but this movie knows what it is, and joyfully embraces the genre. :)

Kim Woo Bin was great as the slick thief/conman, Ko Chang-Seok was perfect as the engineer (and voice of sanity) partner, and Lee Hyun Woo played his hacker-jerk with smooth sneers masking a nervous interior.

If you're a fan of the genre, you'll see the narrative twists a mile away, but they're still fun. :) My only objection is that there was too much 'damsel' for the female lead. I can't discuss her character arc w/o spoilers, but let's just say I kept expecting plot developments that didn't show in regards to her, which was a pity. It would have made the whole thing a lot more snarky if my assumptions were canon. Just sayin'.

The Powers That Be must have heard me complaining about the under-use of Kwon Hyun Sang in Blood, because he apparently has a new feature film coming up: Bitch ::heart:: Asshole.

Aside from being amused by the name, I'm thrilled to see that he's the lead male, playing a low-life, and featured on a very sexy poster. Yesssssss. He plays a counterfeiter who falls in love with a prostitute (they save each other). There's no supernatural shenanigans, but I can deal.

There's also an upcoming film that looks good called "The Chronicles of Evil", starring Park Seo Joon & Ma Dong Seok as detectives. It also stars Daniel Choi & Son Hyun Joo (the president in "Three Days").

Bitch ::heart:: Asshole --> ha! Awesome name! I'm not familiar with the lead girl. It just reminds me a bit of Mandate of Heaven. Him and Yoon Jin-yi were such a hoot. But I guess the film and that drama have totally opposite feels.

Why this guy can switch between cute puppy and scary villain? It's awesome.

And thanks for that Ma Dong Seok news. Haha~ he's another guy who can both be squishy AND terrifying if he wants too. Ajusshi ♥ for him.

Why this guy can switch between cute puppy and scary villain? It’s awesome.

I know. The interrogation room scenes in VP2 made the hair on the back of my neck stand up - he's so good at that. Especially because he has that 'casually violent' body language down pat. ::shivers happily::

I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a romantic lead (ok, in steamy kissing scenes; what? I can be shallow.)

he’s another guy who can both be squishy AND terrifying if he wants too

He is a bull of a man, seriously. The size of his biceps - lord have mercy, can he lift trucks? ::laugh:: I know what you mean, though - he's very good at sympathetic characters. The cast on that cop movie sounds awesome.

I found Bitch heart Asshole on youtube, but alas! No subtitles. I'm watching it anyway, because I'm fairly certain there will be bed scenes. Apparently it was filmed in 2013?

::sigh:: Wish I could find it subbed. Or magically increase my language comprehension.
