Odds and Ends: Internet detox

girlfriday: So, are you alive?

javabeans: Huh? Who are you? What am I? Where are we? How did I get here?

girlfriday: I’ll take that as a no. Uprooting your whole life can do that to you. How was the big move?

javabeans: You know, you’d think that the worst part about packing boxes and hiring movers and driving many many miles away to a new home would be the worst part about moving, but the most acute pain actually comes from the mandatory internet detox that the process necessitates. You unplug that modem, and I swear, something inside screams a little.

girlfriday: Thank the heavens for 4G.

javabeans: No kidding. It’s a good thing you were around to pick up the slack, because my last night in Seattle, I was sitting in my empty room, twiddling my thumbs. Literally. Kakao was our lifeline.

girlfriday: Javabeans and I spend most of our Kakao conversations sending each other weird-ass emoticons that we would never find uses for otherwise. It’s like a game.

javabeans: It’s the strangest thing to be unplugged for more than an hour at a time, and lemme tell you, even an hour of cable interruption is unacceptable. But a whole day or more? It’s enough to give you the shakes. But you know this.

girlfriday: Oh do I ever. I had a total meltdown today when the cable company decided to mistakenly shut off my internet, and then refused to send a technician out until tomorrow. TOMORROW. A WHOLE DAY.

javabeans: It’s like the universe is trying to force us to take a vacation from Dramabeans, but we keep ignoring it and going to coffee shops and trying to write posts on our smartphones instead.

girlfriday: It’s infuriatingly slow and stupid. Also, I feel like the price of a chai latte should get me more megabytes per second.

javabeans: Is this what net neutrality gets us? Equal and fair slowness? Inefficiency for one and all?

girlfriday: We tried to take the night off, but so far, that’s not working out.

javabeans: Because these recaps don’t write themselves, you know! At this point we just don’t know how to operate off our regularly scheduled programming. We just find ways to get to Point Z anyway, even if it kills us.

girlfriday: You know how in dramas, where the heroine decides to pack up and move, and all it takes is one phone call, a blue truck, and a jump cut? I want that life.

javabeans: Yes, and fancy officetels come perfectly furnished the day you sign the lease. Tthis is why dramas are fantasy. I laughed a fit in Sweet 18 when Lee Da-hae comes to Korea from the U.S., leases an office space, and I KID YOU NOT, a day later is running a full-service law firm. She had clients! And cases! And staff!

girlfriday: That’s just not real! And even all those Candys who can fit all of their worldly possessions in one duffel bag are a fantasy too.

javabeans: Especially when they never wear the same outfit twice.

girlfriday: Maybe they’re like those Mary Poppins endless carpet bags. At least a vagabond Candy doesn’t have to worry about her cable internet pooping out on her. Can someone die from internet withdrawal?

javabeans: That is a scenario I don’t want to test, not even for science. But you can do it, just half a day more! Take deep breaths and keep your 4G connection close.

girlfriday: If I’m not back online in a day, just assume I didn’t make it.

I get it. I really do. Am packing up my own life and moving cities in two weeks and I haven't even begun to think about all the important stuff because I'm so focussed on how best to unplug my network here so I suffer the least amount of withdrawal.

I'm moved and lived in so many different countries when I was younger (and up till ow too), that it doesn't really affect me as much anymore.

But, of course, that's because I can live off dramas I've already downloaded on my hard drive and forget completely about the internet. Once that drama stash runs out though... :(

Gaaah! Don't wanna even think about not being online -- but go to Death Valley and places like that and you are in a cell service ghost town.

And the thing I want to ask those Candy movers (male and female) is how they manage to pack 10 winter coats AND all their face care products in a wheelie suitcase barely larger than a carryon and still lift it with one finger!

*hugs heelreo* Dun worry, before you know it, PKW will be out and he will have a fun project with Joowon where all they do is have sleepovers and talk about girls and fight over who eats the egg in the ramyun. No killing and stuff.

Hey, as long as we're wishing, right?

I'm supposed to be packing (but I'm not) and I'm moving to storage for awhile before I move to Korea and a lot of the officetels and such online are actually furnished surprisingly.

Now the apartments I'm looking at to actually move in (Lotte Castle looks really appealing) are unfurnished.

Moving is one of my least favorite things to do. The only good thing is that it provides a chance to get rid of things that are no longer needed or wanted. Still, I hate, hate, hate it.

Hope that the moves goes smoothly and you settle in quickly. Moving aside, a new home can be exciting! :)

Safe travels!

Don't the surveys say that the 3 most stressful things in life are:
Death of a spouse, divorce and moving? In that order.
I think those surveys were done before internet became predominant. Nowadays, loss of it'd rank way up there as a biggie for sure.

next year I get to move out of my house to go to a small village for a year as a social service year to give back to society what they gave to me in the form of a medical education, but omg I've already broken out in hives since I heard that not all of the villages have internet connection... now I have to figure out which ones do... if not that'll certainly be the cause of my death.

Then there is the torture of unpacking. When it comes down to it in a battle of an episode of Healer or an hour of unpacking, Healer has won all weekend. I keep telling myself that once I'm done with Healer I'll start unpacking, but you know what? I've really been meaning to start Kill Me Heal Me...And the cycle will continue until my parents decide to visit at which point I'll at least move all the boxes into the second bedroom...to be unpacked...sometime...

Omg lol, you're in my head! I moved to another city months ago. Haven't finished unpacking, still have boxes scattered around while I watch and re-watch Healer. But two days ago my in-laws decided to come over and stay for the weekend. Now I have boxes hidden under my bed, under my kids beds, and under everything that has space underneath it lol I have a feeling that those boxes will never be un-packed!

I'm supposed to move countries and join my mum, but I've been dragging it out and postponing since December, so far only my books have been sorted, when I think about all the things I have to pack,my mind just blanks out and turns to dramas. I've been giving excuses and holding out because here the Internet is way cheaper, I can stream dramas as they air,a Dvd store that sells Kdramas, and there is an Asian store where I can get my ingredients for my learning Korean cooking which the country.if I leave I'll have to get my kdrama fix only from reading recaps. Stress.

Javabeans, I'm sorry Seattle can no longer call you it's own. My little fantasy - someday I'll meet JB on the street and she'll invite me over to drink homemade makgulli! Another dream dies, sigh! Seriously, best of luck in your new home! And try to get your unpacking done faster than I have; six years in my house and still not done. I blame you, Kdrama!

2 yrs. ago I decided to move to another country, major lifestyle change. Until now I haven't settled my stuff yet. One thing I regret is, I'm unable to bring all my books. It's a little expensive hauling it all in a courier. Btw one thing I love here in the US is even though I live in the boonies, we have a 4G LTE, unlike from where I came from, still on 3G.

Omg, good luck with the move Javabeans! I'm supposed to be moving to another country but am def postponing the process. I have so much crap to sort out and when i see all my stuff i just blank out. Too much stress, i'll just be in denial and read drama recaps.

I would have a difficult time if I had to choose to have either an operation or a move. I really hate moving. Moving is where you know something is going to get completely screwed up, might never be fully repairable, but there is not the faintest clue from what direction Dr. Doom could be coming for you. Glad it all worked out for you.

I totally get it.

When I was on rotations, I was moving every 3 months. YES, picking up and moving to a new state with one suitcase because anything else would be too much. Hoping to find a place with a bed and 3 month lease - drove me crazy not to mention we only got one weekend to move - even if it was west coast to east coast. I guess the best part is to try a new state for a little while - got to live in bush Alaska, board and food included for FREE! (and we had wifi too!)

Good luck with it all though and hope you settle in soon!

Don't even say about moving, I went to holiday for few days and when I can't get the signal or there's no Wi-Fi I'd stressed out. Literally.
I'm also a woman with super-connectivity (if there's such a thing). I live off my smartphone and my laptop and of course Kdramas. I can watch kdramas on laptop, but when there's no internet I'd go crazy!
I just hope my internet here won't get any problem and even better the 4G arrived soon.

I wish you well in your new place, Javabeans!

Just yesterday my friends invited me into their craziness of emoticon conversations on LINE. I was away from my phone for about 30 minutes and came back to 70+ notifications! Hilarious and confusing.

So that's why JB seemed a bit missing. Glad it's not something bad. (Well, bad for health, but moving and no internet is a bummer.)

We move around a lot, I feel my stuff is permanently in boxes. Or on the floor. You only ever need to unpack undies, a plate, spoon and fork, laptop, and your favorite PJs+book anyway. Everything else can stay in a dusty box!

My sis and I also send each other those butt/peach looking Kakao emoticons. They're hilarious! She's better at it than I am and sometimes manages to sneak in an EXO smiley. *shaking fist*

Where I live a woman has willingly allowed a TV station to lock her up in a glass house for 2 months in the middle of a shopping mall. No phones, internet, nothing. She only gets privacy in her bathroom. My mother and I decided that we could never handle it. We joked that even when the power goes out for an hour we don't know what to do with ourselves.

I have been seriously considering unplugging for a week. No laptop, no phone, no Korean studying, no DVD's, no TV, no blog, no news, no Kdramas or Kpop. I sort of have forgotten what it is like to do things that do not require electricity, to walk in the real world talking in person.

My plan is to start Tuesday at 10 AM. Let's see if I can make it a week ...

Try getting your Internet access on an old Kindle when the power is out (and you don't have a smart phone). Slower than mud, and a complete exercise in frustration. Forget about browsing, even to weather sites to find out when the blizzard will end. Just emailing is an extreme sport. :-)
