Lee Jun-ki courted to become vampire scholar of the night

Lee Jun-ki, for vampire-fantasy-period drama Scholar Who Walks the Night? Well now you’ve put the idea in my head and it can’t be un-put! I want this bad and I want it now, and you can’t backtrack because I won’t let you! Stamps feet.

(Also, Lee Jun-ki should always do sageuks, preferably of the fantasy variety. Stunts a given, brooding required, pretty pretty hanboks just icing on the cake. He utterly had my heart in Arang and the Magistrate with his subdued intensity… but of course, then he goes and is perfect in modern thrillers like Two Weeks, so I can’t insist too hard on my own rule.)

Scholar Who Walks the Night has flirted with a number of big-name leading men but hasn’t yet gotten one to stick past the “maybe considering possibly” stage — Kim Soo-hyun and Park Hae-jin were two earlier possibilities floated in the news. So there’s a pretty fair shot that Lee Jun-ki’s casting may not come to fruition either — his reps confirmed that he’s considering the offer, but that they’re still just in the talking-it-out stage — but I really do hope it’ll work out. Even if I’m already tired of all the vampire dramas, and could really do without the glut.

The series is based (of course) on a manhwa and has been in planning since last year. Set in the Joseon period, the heroine (the offer for which is currently out to Han Groo) comes from an aristocratic family that has fallen on hard times and disguises herself in men’s clothing to sell books, and falls in love with a vampire scholar. So yeah, okay, maybe it sounds a lot like Sungkyunkwan Scholar, although if Lee Jun-ki and Han Groo sign on, I won’t even care if it’s more like Scholar Who Walks the Twilight (…please don’t be Scholar Who Walks the Twilight!).

Scholar Who Walks the Night is planning for a July premiere on MBC.

Ever since I read about this project, I've been thinking about how great it is if we can have LJK. Yes he has done lots of sageuks and action stuff, but he's so good in it that I don't mind seeing him doing this all the time!!

It's a bonus that I like Han Groo too. Maybe they'll get to kick ass together?

I have no idea what kind of person the lead guy is though.

I feel like the vampire is just a state of being.

I'm more curious if he'll be aloof with a secret like Crazy Horse? Flirty with hidden steel like Gu Yong-ha? Eccentric and not well-adjusted to human life like Gu Miho? A smarty pants cool namja like Joseon Vampire Prosecutor?

Tell us, dramaland T_____________T

Or maybe a puppy dog full of energy like Enrique? That would be awesome to see, especially since I've yet to see LJK in something romcom-y. Or maybe even just smart and earnest and almost mr perfect, like Boongdo? Then it can be Queen's Scholar of Night or something.

Either way, I'm really liking everything about this drama so far, and I really hope both LJK and Han Groo will accept.

Doesn't the manhwa say the male lead isolates himself from society by pretending to have leoprasy? Hardly a puppy thing to do. Though it'd be hilarious if that's how they played it.

If they're considering casting Han Groo, the puppy role will probably be reserved for her. ?

Argh to think they were actually this close to starring together last year, when they were both Angel Eyes. Which, in retrospect, I'm glad they didn't take, it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be, and anyway, LJK had Joseon Gunman which, swoon.

Maybe they both could co-star and reward us with an amazeballs bromance and goofy hijinks or something because who knows the possibilities are endless. Required fields are marked *

Pinny you are NOT alone! :) We are out there but I think it is hard to say we don't like his acting when so many disagree. I used to like him in My Girl and Arang, after Two Weeks I wasn't sure anymore and Joseon Gunmen changed my idea about him for good. He doesn't have much subtlety, if you watch a lot of his scenes you can predict exactly the face and expression he will use because there are only a fixed number of them, it's schematic. In real life we spend most of our time hiding a bit what we feel, good actors understand that, the emotion is there but not in an obvious, childish way, we take back a little. Most kdramas actors miss this and can never find balance between over the top and bland.
He does have charisma and he is gorgeous but I hope he says no too. :)

Required fields are marked *

Lixie - even as a fan I admit he tends to overdo it sometimes and uses ALL the expression and expresses ALL the feelings while acting.

He actually shines most in roles like Arang where the PD actively prevents him from doing that and so the ALL THE FEELINGS kind of acting he favours instead came out as barely restrained intensity and a subtlety that he otherwise lacks. Despite that, I still like his regular acting style - I admit he's not the most naturally gifted actor but he pours 150 percent into every role, and has never just sat back and let his face do the work for him. And it works in roles like Two Weeks, where the whole series was pretty much about staying on the run and keeping things really intense.

Required fields are marked *

@pogo

Yes, I always think about him as dedicated, I'll give him that. You can clearly see him really trying to portray every single emotion on screen, it is that very struggle that made me like him less because when great actors perform it feels effortless. I agree about Arang too, maybe he needs a good director to guide him. I forgot to say he was great in King and the Clown. I love that movie.

0

Required fields are marked *

I LOVE Lee Jun Ki. He is talented - he can act, sing, and dance. He has a great personality. And like Pogo said, he gives 150 percent into every role! It's true that he overacts in crying scenes sometimes but (to me) that is a very minor fault when you consider how interesting/entertaining he makes his characters to be.

0

I like him because I do.

we do not have to explain ourseves. let them argue by theirselves pogo. let´s go to ninja class, we´ve been missing them the whole time KMHM aired. I gotta practice for that headstand...

@redfox I like plenty of people that others dislike and I find interesting to know their reasons. What is wrong with talking about it in a nice manner? Saying things like

>thank you, dont care tho
>let them argue by theirselves

are uncalled for and that kind of comment makes people afraid to say they dislike any popular person on the threads. Let's play nice. :)

0

redfox - honestly, I think there's nothing wrong with nicely explaining why I like his acting despite not being perfect - I don't want to be one of those crazy overdefensive fans who goes off on people for saying they dislike a popular actor who h.ppens to be my favourite,

It's not even as if it was an insult to his looks or anything personal, just an assessment of him as an actor.

0

The predictable face thing happens to every single actor. Seeing how you watched Arang, Two Weeks and Joseon Gunman, I think you've been seeing too much of Lee Junki, over a short period of time. It's like how I can't watch Jang Hyuk in SoGC now because the expressions are so similar. Plus Korean actors and subtlety don't belong to the same sentence anyway. Lee Junki is a superb eye-candy though, but I'll pass up on a saguek (again).

0
10
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm having the same trouble watching Jang Hyuk in SoGC. I'm marathoning it at the moment. Even his laugh is the same (I wish he would lose or tone down the laughter). I feel like I'm watching Fated To Love You Part 2. That's part of the problem of having two rom-coms back to back even though one's a modern one and the other's a saguek.

You do have a point that too much exposure can turn a person off even the most liked actors. However as much as I adored Jang Hyuk in FTLY, I also liked Choi Jin Hyuk and watched him in Pride and Prejudice. He was able to embody the character, Dong Chi, and I didn't even think about his role in Fated To Love You when I watched him in the P&P.

I guess it boils down to how chameleon like an actor can get in immersing themselves into a role. There are some actors who overshadow their role so when you see them in action, you are seeing the actor, and not the character. A good Hollywood example is someone like Julia Roberts. There are other actors who are so immersed in their roles, you forget they exist, like Edward Norton or Cate Blanchett or Ian Mckellen. The end result of the former is boredom after a while, and for the latter, you can watch them endlessly - they tend to give the best performances, too.

Personally, I never really took to Lee Jun Ki and don't know what the hype is about. I was never really a fan of Joo Won either, but I can see why others rave about him. He has a chameleon like intensity and he disappears into his roles making him a joy to watch. But we all have our preferences, I guess.

0

Required fields are marked *

Adal, very good examples. :)

0

Frankly speaking, Wang So is like Lee Gun to me. I think Jang Hyuk has always been sort of repetitive so I dropped SoGC. That and also because the male leads' hairstyles are ridiculous. Choi Jin-hyuk, on the other hand, had practically no screen time in FTLY, and his character didn't really have a strong personality so I feel it's natural that you don't see shadows of his FTLY character in P&P. It may also be that he's a great actor, well, it's hard to say.

Back to LJK. For me, Lee Junki is just gorgeous looking in sageuks. I like him in a superficial way. And even though Arang was so loved, I think it really wasn't a good drama. His acting isn't great, but I watch just enough of him (skipped Joseon Gunman) that I'm never bothered about the predictable face thing. I'll totally watch him in a rom-com though. Just curious to see how it'll be like. As for Joo Won, I won't watch a show for him, but it's not that I dislike him or anything.

0

@paroles

I disagree, the face is the same but the great or even good actors know how to change the expressions, there are actors capable of huge personality and mood changes without much effort.

I watched Arang, Two Weeks and Joseon exactly on the period they aired, it was very much a surprise for me to find my reaction to him change so much.

>Plus Korean actors and subtlety don’t belong to the same sentence anyway.

There are good apples, they are just hard to find among the sea of those doing too much or too little.:)

In the context of the Korean entertainment industry though, these actors are hard to come by. As you said, "most kdramas actors miss this and can never find balance between over the top and bland". Even the ones who are supposedly good too. I think they feel compelled to act well sometimes they overdo it. Most of them have the same expressions as well. I'm not a picky viewer, so I don't mind if I'm watching them again after a year or so. In general, I skip their next work if it happens too soon. And recently I've learnt to stick to this rule. I rarely finish a drama too; I guess that helps. And so I find overacting a bigger issue than predictability.

With respect to my opinion that "Korean actors and subtlety don’t belong to the same sentence"... Well, the first time I watched a K-drama I got a cultural shock ;)

0

Who do you think are the "good apples" in k-drama scene?

0

It's not overacting, It's different type of acting style, you brain-dead idiot. If you knew anything about Asian culture, you would understand how that developed.

0

Actually, once you get familiar with an actor/actress, you'll develop familiarity and notice their habits when acting.. I do this all the time.. I'm quite familiar with Ji Chang Wook, Moon Geun Young and some other actors.. It's not that hard.. It doesn't mean they're not good actors, but we just notice their brand of acting or their style of acting.. For example, there are people who are really good at subtleties and some are not, there are passionate actors and there are more restrained actors. Acting not only have 1 method and the method is diverse among many actors.. That's why if you find Lee Jun Ki's acting is predictable, it's just because you're familiar with him that you can predict his acting, his tone, movement, etc.

I just got the most hilarious image of that... sending a horde of aspiring Yo Nas flying left & right with supernatural punches. come to think Yo Naś attack style is sort of like a vampires`.... except she drinks kisses, not blood...

Every actor/actress will have their fair share of success or failure and ups and downs over time. No actor/actress can always be on the top forever. Anyway, one man's meat is another man's poison. So be nice, otherwise karma may bite you...

I think her comment was intended as a reply to #35.

0

you are right, since my laptop is doing weird things, it is very sensitive and once you hover over something the comment "hops"

0

Huh? If anyone will have to have ups and downs, then your so called karma doesn't make any sense to anyone. The thing is some persons have such a long history of downs at such a young age. Their fandoms should care for this rather than the silly karma happening to others. Not buddhist, anw.

0

@Queenbee She reminded you about your kharma/faith on particular actors' fates, according to what you said. But you just dragged out the fandoms, unlucky rookies and even the religions??.., to get what you want, tsk tsk

0

@Queenbee-- 2 sentences for you:
(1) You are so low-minded.
(2) Because you showed it by looking down to others saying something like this.

Lol, all rite. Two questions for you:

1. What makes you high-minded?
2. Why becoming low-minded when saying a true FACT?

Extra question: who looked down who in the first place?

The cmt no.35 didn't even say anything bad about her bias, and it mentioned two actors's names neutrally. And look at what she spitted out. Rudeness doesn't deserve respect here. So, just stop acting scholar, plz.

0

@Queenbee-- My answer has been given to you in #2.

Lol to that "TRUE fact" and your emphasis of it despite knowing how the k-ent industry runs. How can a failed actor be always wanted by PDs of well-planned projects on the primetime slots, gets good reviews by the media even when he didn't win in rating, and still wins awards for his every drama in which many actors in 30s can't?

Even that statement of @redfox may be negativity for you, it's just her opinion.. not to the point like your level of mind had shown flatly.
Seems too full of yourself, be careful please.

0

@Queenbee - Redfox's statement is just HER opinion of the actor's acting, with which we don't have to agree. There are also commenters "upstairs' who are negative about LJK's acting, whose opinion his fans don't have to agree either.

However, your statement that the actor is a failure is no less rude, and comes off as rather arrogant.

I agree with you that rudeness doesn't deserve respect here.

I think LKJ is great, but I think KSH and PHJ would have worked just as well too. Plot sounds interesting, but I can't help but wonder why the other two rejected the role. Is it the PD? Writer?

My first choice is Ji Chang-Wook but if they can't get him then Lee Ju-Ki would be my 2nd choice! So if LJK takes the role I wouldn't be disappointed.

I personally think the premise sounds really fun. I've always liked the cross-dressing cliche.

The synopsis of the manhwa if someone is intrested in the plot

Synopsis

A vampire scholar and a bookseller come together to fight against a conspiracy

An authority figure Gwee who controls the Joseon dynasty behind the scene is actually a vampire. Motivated by his avarice, Gwee conspires to obstruct the crown prince’s accession to the throne.

On the other hand, there’s a righteous vampire named Seongyeol who has been living as scholar for 150 years. He has locked himself in his studies for many years, and there are rumors amongst the villagers that he’s just an old man with leprosy.

In order to hide his true identity, Seongyeol never lets a bookseller revisit his place. But he makes an exception to the rule for a smart and decisive bookseller Yangsun. Yangsun knows the bad effects of corrupt political powers from the experience of losing her parents and three older brothers in a political trap. She believes that the world can become a better place if we broaden our knowledge through books. Because she lives in a society that forbids women from working in the business, she works and dresses as a boy. But Seongyeol instantly recognizes that she’s indeed a woman, and can’t help himself from being attracted to her.

Meanwhile, the villagers are becoming paranoid about a recent mystery murder. The authorities first believe that the death was caused by a tiger’s attack, and summon hunters for their expert advice. The hunters believe that the attacks were not made by a tiger. The first one to recognize it as a work of a vampire is the tiger hunter Hoyeon. As the vampire Gwee makes efforts to hide the crime, Hoyeon is falling into danger.

Seongyeol and Yangsun work together to fight against the vampire Gwee’s conspiracy.

So the trend this year is manhwa adaptation. It's like every other drama, not that I'm complaining..

Lee Jun-ki is a puzzle to me. I really like him and think he is a good actor but I haven't been able to finish any of his post army dramas. I dropped both Arang and Joseon Gunman about halfway through their run. Two Weeks is one of the two K-dramas I have actually dropped half way through the final episode. That Winter the Wind Blows was the other one. And yet I love his pre-army stuff. Time Between Dog & Wolf, The King and the Clown and Fly Daddy Fly remain favourites and he doesn't overact in them. I have a hard time figuring it out.

I think the problem is that he seems to choose roles that are just too young for him post army. He looks great (if way too thin for my particular tastes but that's just me) but he's in his 30's now with his national service behind him and he's a man, not a boy. Some actors give off a boyish vibe well into their 30's or later but LJK isn't one of them. I'd love to see him move into more mature roles like in a contemporary adult romantic comedy, as an anti-hero or even as an outright bad guy. At least the role in the vampire drama is a scholar and not the ubiquitous student so just maybe he's going to pay his age. I really am a fan so I will check it out regardless.

Wonder if you actually know LJK well and watched his dramas cuz you even didn't seem which ones are his movies or dramas. On top of that, TWTWB is not his drama.
How could we believe your perspectives for his acting? lol

I do know his dramas versus his movies. Both K&C and FDF are movies. And how is TBDaW not his drama? He and Nam Sang-mi are the stars and were paired together again in Joseon Gunman so I was excited to see it but then dropped it. I've also watched Hero which I liked and Ilijimae which I didn't like quite so much but watched all the way through. Like I said, I am a fan of LJK and think he is a good actor so there is really no call to get snarky. It's my opinion. You are entitled to your own without calling my appreciation of his earlier work and minor criticisms of his current choice in roles into question.

Also I said TWtWB was one of 2 dramas I dropped halfway through the last episode, not that LJK was in it. Read what I have written please before calling my personal opinion into question.

I didn't say TBDAW not his drama, it's TWTWB. The mention of that drama while talking about LJK's to be confused like his drama, sorry for that.
I understand the different opinions. But since his performances in post-army dramas are also well-received, the mention of TWTWB and his acting in previous dramas made me to question it. And LJK's characters in his dramas do fit to his age. He even did a father in Two Weeks that many actors at his age and older still considering to do.

0

It seems the majority of people do like his post army work. I respect that. I just happen to think that he needs to move into more mature roles now. And gain some weight but, again, personal opinion as I like men with some heft to them. Also I thought you were saying that I didn't know TBD&W was his drama. So much for actually reading what other people write! Sorry about that.

0

vampires are not exactly boyish either thye may appear young but they can be quite the grandpas. a little maturity is not bad and it might even do good to aqcuire some ahjussi manners

dang you dont even know his dramas why am I even replying?

I'm kinda on the same plane. I like LJK but can't seem to finish his dramas because my enthusiasm either falls (Arang, Two Weeks)/the drama doesn't interest me (Joseon Gunman). I'm always hoping for one that I can last through without dropping in the middle. Maybe this one will be the one, although I was hoping that he'd do a romcom.

For me, LJK is a certified actor for consistantly checking out his projects. His post-army drama I finished for him is just "Joseon Gunman".
Loved "Arang & the Magistrate", and "Two Weeks" was such a satisfying ride, Daebak!
Looking forward to another great one this year.
