IU courted to reunite with Kim Soo-hyun in Producer

Well, you had me at Cha Tae-hyun, but I won’t say no if you just keep casting people I like. KBS’s new drama about varietyland called Producer has an offer out to singer-actress IU (Pretty Man, You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin) to play the leading lady, opposite Kim Soo-hyun in a possible Dream High reunion. How cute would they be? I feel a Dream High marathon weekend coming on…

The showbiz drama comes from star variety PD Seo Soo-min (Superman Returns, 1 Night 2 Days Season 3) and You From Another Star writer Park Ji-eun. It stars Cha Tae-hyun as a 10-year veteran variety PD with a mile-long list of credits to his name, but none of them are noteworthy in any way. Kim Soo-hyun plays the rookie PD who ditches the path to becoming a prosecutor and heads to work at the variety department of a TV network. Why does he do this? Why, for love, of course.

Maybe IU is that reason, though if she is, it makes him a little bit of a crazy fanboy with a pipe dream. She’ll play a singer who began as a trainee at the tender age of 13, and has grown up to be a 10-year veteran top star. She’s an ice princess with a poker face, mostly because she doesn’t like to let anyone else in. She has good reason to be guarded though, because she’s had too much experience with people who act as if they’d carve out their own livers for her if she needed, only to stab her in the back. She now knows to keep everyone at a safe distance, and never lets herself feel deep affection for anyone.

I’m curious to know what kind of variety program the show-within-a-show will be, because the parody possibilities are endless. So far Cha Tae-hyun is confirmed, while Kim Soo-hyun and IU are still considering their offers. The role of a female PD has yet to be cast to complete the main… lovesquare? Sun/hoobae-square? IU has made the transition from singing to acting well, and has gotten considerably better since her acting debut in Dream High. I’d love to see them paired up here, though I’d like some assurances that her ice princess won’t be a bitchy diva without a heart. Coming from the writer who created Chun Song-yi, I guess I don’t really have anything to be worried about, do I?

Producer is tentatively aiming for a Friday-Saturday slot beginning April 17.

@be ON AIR drama is written by Kim Eun-sook. This is Park Ji-eun. If THAT rumor is true, I would prefer IU over Gong Hyo-jin or Moon Geun-young. :-)

So far I am loving the casting... IU, Cha Tae-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun. Should be fine!

Though I would fight for Cha Tae-hyun being the top-billed. Cha deserves it over Kim... Cha is greatly relevant with K-variety and has the longer lasting A-list status (since My Sassy Girl, I think)... though it's far from the possible outcome since Kim has gained worldwide fans from YFAS.

Now if there's a rumor about Jeon Ji-hyun regarding the role, WAHAHAHA, kidding...

Ah you're right. I mixed up with Joong Ki drama haha. So many casting news today. Yah JJH will be perfect but I doubt she'll doing this. Both male lead and the writer are connected to her though

Me too, I hope the writer will at least give a fair treatment for CTH and dont just let him become second male lead and overshine by KSH. ON AIR drama was pretty fair i guess but yeah they are different writer.

haha yeah it'll be awesome if ji hyun joins this cast! IU will really have to fight for attention then :P though i'd be thrilled if gong hyo jin completes the cast as well.

I quite like IU's character as it's made out to be, different from the usual sweet and nice kdrama leads, nothing less expected from the writer :D and yay cha tae hyun will make it funny! and kim soo hyun will make it pretty.

This sounds like such a win win drama for now :D

Or IU herself.......she did debut very young too. And also had a scandal which almost ruined her career too. It was such a dumb scandal too, what is so shocking about a 19 year old having a boyfriend?

Much better for talented people like her to take lead roles than some other people.

Some actors were or are previous/current singers-turned-actors (and vice versa--a few idols were actors before they entered the idol business). Seo In Guk is a great example of this. A lot of people forget that he was a singer before he became an actor. Same with Lee Seung Gi.

Oh man, is this drama going to cast my most favorite people on top of it being written by one of my current favorite writers? Can't get better than that!

IU and Kim Soo-hyun were adorable in whatever few scenes they had in DH together. Plus, his character sounds a tiny bit like Sam-dong with the dedicated-love angle. I'm just so excited for this; can't wait for the last cast member to get announced and for all to confirm. Don't disappoint drama, I'm counting on you!

TBH it is a little weird, cause IU and Kim Soo Hyun always looked like they could be bro & sis to me. but if they played opposite each other before...

But the part IU is offered seems juicy. The ruthless dynamics of the entertainment industry should be a good place to put all in and really not hold back.

If IU is cast, I don't think it's a 4 equal leads thing. She's a up and coming actress, not a movie star like CTH and KSH. It'll be more like a 2 male leads + supporting female leads, i.e. the two guys will get top billing.

I don't think GHJ would in any way be playing a supporting lead to the guys. And if she's cast, then IU and her would get just as big roles as KSH and CTH. It's not common in kdramas, but four equal leads with this writer is totally possible.

GHJ has been playing kind of supporting female leads. I say kind of here because you can consider her an equal lead and she shines in the dramas, but the plot mostly focuses on the male lead. And judging by the name of the drama currently, even if we get equal leads, I don't think IU will be in the equation. I actually like her, but I don't think she'll get as big a role. It'll definitely be fun to watch though, if we get a rookie PD + big-time star loveline.

I think that's the case for most kdramas but GHJ has always played an equally important character as the male. The only time a female lead gets the 'main' chatacter is in a female centric sageuk which is rare. Other than that, the likes of Ha Ji-won, Song Hye-kyo, Gong Hyo-jin etc plays equal leads. I don't consider K2H, IOIL or Secret Garden male centric but rather OTP centric. Which means it focuses on two people rather than just one. But that could simply be a difference in perception.

As for IU, if it's not going to be a love triangle, which I doubt it will - it's very obvious to me that she'll be playing a huge role in the drama. Unless they pair up KSH and GHJ. Then I can see her take a backseat with CTH making up the threesome.

Hmm... reading the female lead descriptions, it's feel like Chun Song-yi version 2. Not complaining though, since she's just a blast to watch. Heh.

But if they are aiming for - pardon me - 'bitch' vibe why not considering Jung So-min? I think she is great at that while showing her vulnerable side. Though I wont mind IU. She was likeable enough in Dream High.

How come the female PD role is offered to top actresses and the celebrity role is offered to IU? I though the celebrity girl was supposed to be the lead?

I wouldn't mind having two equally important couples, but I don't know if that can work out. Ultimately, one takes all, and it doesn't make sense to seek out top actors for a secondary OTP.

I'm confused, but definitely on board. Hoping it works out!

Soo Hyun and IU are really close in real life after Dream High.
Their friendship is adorable.
IU went to all his movie premieres while he took time from his super busy schedule to come to her concerts <3
Surely the chemistry looks promising~

IU is one of the candidates I have on mind.
Reading the brief description, I think it suits her a lot.
I am fan of her music and her personality in real life.
So I have read lots of her interviews and I found her recent ones in the past years sound really deep and mature for her age.
The lyrics she wrote for her album is an art.
Behind those smiling face, she is hiding lots of pain and sadness.
She has gone through a lot with scandals.
She debuts really young in this competitive k-entertainment.
To maintain her" national younger sister" , it must be so tough.
She has been working really hard in both music and acting.
Her acting is getting better through projects. Of course she still has to work harder but girl gets plenty of potential. Hoping for a meaty role for her <3
There is so much soul in her eye acting and her voice.
The soundtrack is going to be awesome!!!

I like IU. I mean i'm a fan of hers but i don't think there's going to be a chemistry between them (KHS).

I am actually pinning for Kim Soo Hyun and Park Shin Hye to be in a drama. I think this is going to be a good oppurtunity for them to team up. I mean there's something about them when they were together that makes me feel love all over the place.

The role is going to be a good experience for Park Shin Hye since it's somehow different but quite similar to the roles she's been playing for her past dramas.

Even if they can't be together in this drama I'm still hoping they will going to have a drama/movie soon or in real life. Hehehehe.

P.S. I miss Lee Jung Suk and Park Shin Hye.

That part sounds like Yoo Rachel with singing abilities lol. Anyway, IU does have the singing part covered, but can she act? I've never seen any of her dramas so it's a genuine question.
The theme doesn't appeal that much to me, but with the right cast I might give it a try. So far I'm not entirely convinced even though I'm sure that IU and KSH's fanbases alone will give this drama the ratings that no prime time drama has had in a very long time.

I doubt fanbases can help in ratings all that much or dramas like SSL or TTBY would've been big ratings hit. The current dramas doing well very like Punch and SOGC has some extremely established actors. Viewers taste has changed a lot but I do think the YFAS writer as well as the hype will give it a boost. Then it all depends on the quality.

You're right about change in taste. I never thought that a drama like Misaeng, which has no romance as far as I've been told, could be so popular, so maybe viewers' taste is indeed becoming more refined. Then they really need great actors to make this work. I was never convinced by KSH's abilities, but maybe the older guy is better...and the other actress has to be quite fantastic as well since I just can't trust IU's abilities either. Maybe she's great, like I said idk her, but whenever I hear about an idol being cast my immediate reaction is "why god why". My past experience with idols is not that good.
And if it starts good, let's hope it stays that way. The audience is not as forgiving as they used to be.

I personally love KSH in almost anything he's done but that's just an opinion. I also think IU is very decent and probably amongst the best idol actresses out there. She's no Jung Eun-ji, but she's quite convincing and her chemistry with KSH would probably be adorable. In the weird case where they might pair her up with Cha Tae-hyun, it might be okay too since she looked good with JJS and he's about 12 years older than her.

Not sure if you're familiar with Reply 1997, but that has 2 idols in it (A Pink's Eunji, nfinite's Hoya) and 2 former idols (Seo In Guk and Sechskies' Eun Ji-Won) and that's a highly popular and high-rated drama. JYJ's Park Yoochun and Jaejoong have also proven that they can act well.

IU's still a rookie when it comes to acting so it's natural that she won't be as good as the veterans. But the only way any rookie actor/actress can improve is to take on roles. She showed the most promise in You're the Best, Lee Soon Shin (which also starred Yoo In Na).

I don't know, I only watched that drama a year after it ended. I only made an assumption since KSH's last drama seemed to have great ratings even though the subject wasn't that groundbreaking imo. I just assumed it was mainly because of his popularity.
Was Secret a good drama?

AWWW it's like the casting team are reading online comments because a lot of people said iu and ghj would fit the female leads. And I love IU omfgdawftbtje
Buuuuuuut, the character's description still screams suzy at me. Because I can't imagine ice princess IU :(

I've seen some people say that the description fits one idol or the other, but it would be better if the idol has enough talent to sell the character while not being similar to the character at all. That means she's talented enough to deserve this role.

Exactly. It's one thing to convey the emotions of a 'relatable, down-to-earth' character in a natural way. That was a big step for her in YTBLSS. But this is a character that she'll have to think very deeply about on how she wants to bring her to life. I'm actually pretty excited to see her take this on.

I just want squish face KSH to do another cute role like his Sam Dong character because IMO, that's where he shines! It's good for him that he didn't want to do the same roles but i just miss it. Please let it happen!

After reading the synopsis, I agree it sounds more like Suzy but I think, ok more like hope, IU could pull it off if she takes the role.

Anyway, I hope it ends up being an actually good drama and not just disappointing ratings hype.

I think it kinda makes sense for them to cast IU because they probably need a real power vocalist to fit the part of a topstar singer and not just someone who sings 'decently'. IU is actually not bad. One of the better idol actresses you can find out there. Could probably categorize her in the same group with Uee and Eunji in terms of acting skills. But I understand that those who have not seen her in anything or those who have certain prejudism towards idol actors/actresses can't help but to think "oh dear...not another idol". Lol

i've never really liked IU—as a singer, an actress, as a personality. initially she came off a bit too sugary sweet and slightly artificial to me, and then i watched a few interviews of hers where she came off a bit ditzy/faux-mature at the same time... like pretending she was more experienced and wise than she really was. i can't really put my finger on it.

as an actress, i think she's relatively decent and one of the better singer-actors out there. but i've just never really been able to warm up to her... i can only hope that the role she's being offered is sort of a sideline/second lead and not the main female lead. i wouldn't be able to tolerate it otherwise:(

....but why does her offscreen personality matter when she is playing a role? As long as she didn't commit any crimes, she is a decentenough actress. And we should never be surprised that anyone in kpop is faking their image, even wooden Kim Hyun Joong made everyone believe he was some nice 4D boy until last year.

"real life" personality shouldn't matter, but then why do celebrities work so hard to maintain a specific image to their public? because perceived image/personality all matter very much, whether it should or shouldn't. it's just a fact of the business.

for example, suzy's acting skills arguably aren't on par with her level of popularity (yet), but she continues to get work because of her general likability and charm. likability does matter, because generally speaking if an actor isn't well liked or popular, viewers aren't going to tune in. likewise, if an actor happens to be both well liked AND popular (like kim soo-hyun), chances are lots of people are going to tune in because they like him and want to see him.

logically, of course, an actor's only requirement SHOULD be that he be a good actor. technically he could have committed a crime in the past and it shouldn't matter, so long as he'd paid his debt to the law. but good acting skills aren't everything, though it is extremely important. visuals, natural charisma, likability—all these things play a role in making up the whole package. one could be a technically sound actor with zero onscreen charisma or likability, and likely that actor wouldn't get very far.

sometimes an actor is so memorable that they're only seen as a specific character he/she once played. it works the other way around too, when an actor's personal life or personality becomes so big that it begins to eclipse the work.

i imagine that it's got to be a difficult line to walk, and i sympathize in that aspect, but i still think it's very valid to dislike an actor/celebrity for their past performance or their perceived image/personal life. for example, while i respect lee byung-hun's acting chops and his part in helping to pave the way for future asian actors who want to try their luck in hollywood, i have to say i'm pretty turned off by him due to his recent scandal. it's not likely that i'll be able to watch any of his works in the near future and NOT be reminded of it. it all goes hand in hand.

regarding IU, it's true that i don't particularly like her as a singer (i like a few of her songs, but generally her voice isn't for me) or as a personality, but i HAVE watched all of her dramas and given her a fair shot before forming my opinion of her as an actress. i'm willing to concede that she appears to be one of the better singer-actors, but so far i haven't warmed up to her as an actress.

yeahhh... i love IU so much!! she is so talented in many areas. Even her last co-star said that IU is like born with talent in acting. All of you can see her potential since dream high days. She shows her improvement in acting in dramas and mv. Please don't be skeptical to idol-actors. Sometimes, a lot of them are talented (eunji, uee, siwan,lee joon, park yoo chun). I hope IU gonna accept it. If Gong Hyo Jin accept too, IU can take this thing as learning for her from her senior. Hope this drama gonna be hit!

IU is too babyfaced. I didn't like how much of a child she looks like. It will mean, the plot will stay child-level with stone face pecks only.

Writers pleaser hire someone else for the role. I love IU, but as a singer ONLY.

I'm really freaking out I don't want Gong Hyo Jin in this if IU is in, I like her ,but her acting is not good enough for GYJ or KSH I would love the paring GHY and KSH but this drama sounds dull and idol to me I hope GHJ and KSH pass on this one because sounds really bad.

I don't know if IU can pull off that kind of character to be honest. Sure, she's a good singer but she lacks a lot of facial expressions when doing emotional scenes (from when I saw her in You're the Best Lee Soon Shin). I was pulling for Jung Eun Ji but she also played a singer in her last drama. I can't think of anyone else right now who is both a top caliber singer and actress.
